Trouble is, the timescales don't quite match. FEs are a few thousand years ahead of you, or researched all the tech then laid about and jerked off. The precursors predate you by hundreds of thousands, millions of years.

But then B5 made similar mistakes, and said the Sun would go nova in a million years.

Come to think of it, B5 migh have been in a Stellaris size galaxy, rather than one like a real one. Would explain how a handful of empires could talk of dividing it between one another.

Wormhole is by far the best and always has been.
A single tier one powerplant can power six wormhole generators. I think. Maybe even more.

Grab them on every system you have a planet for each of movement, beyond that it's up to you, whatever feels right is fine. The AI doesn't attack them often.

>>173512075

There is a handholding tutorial option in general.

Avoid egalitarian and authoritarian because factions and slaves are kinda fucky if you don't know what you're doing.

Probably materialist to prop up your research which most people fuck up on most games, as they don't keep their research up with their population.

Early game minerals are your reason to live.
Middle game onwards Energy is your reason to live.

In general just play. It isn't too complicated.
Should look into making good ship designs, but if you can't be bothered make sure you at least avoid missiles(the techs, as the AI gives your ship the "best" stuff you have) because they're complete trash.

Who else plays the X series? I have X3 reunion, X3 Terran conflict and I think its called X4 (on steam).
I've only played X3 Reunion and, once I finally figured out how to do anything, I had a great time playing non-stop for weeks.
The openness of the game is its triumph and downfall. Its great to build your own empire, trade routes, patrols, etc, but at the same time if you don't have your own initiative its easy to drown in its depth. Its the sandbox thing.

Playing as a pirate was fun, smashing haulers for loot and captures; but once you realise you can't actually sell most of it due to low cargo or reputation, it kinda became boring.

Thats probably my main problem with the game. Starting from anywhere but the hardest, least capital point feels like cheating, but saving the money for decent fittings, haulers and factory systems takes a long time during which you're mainly drifting through space looking for lost loot and an easy fight/capture.

There are tons of ways to get planetwide happiness, lots of cheap buildings for that, increasing most factions happiness isn't that hard either, supress/promote/embrace what you see fit. With utopia you can even increase species living standards which doesn't cost a lot and sometimes pays for itself even and gives huge happiness boost.

Only unlocked mega-engineering around unbidden invasion, kicked their asses, won the game, now looking at this screensaver till it finishes my structures, then looks like gonna turn this game off for another year or so. You gotta have more ways to interact with other empires and better map generation so that artificial habitats have any point, you also need to be able to get them a bit earlier than around the victory screen. As of now there is literally no point in aiming that high even if you can't expand for some reason, you better find a way to expand than wait centuries and pray to rng that you roll required techs. That is if a blobbing ai won't just roll you and your fancy playstyle. Because there is literally nothing stopping them from that.

I held off on playing this because /v/ said it was shit but I needed a modern sci-fi 4x that focused on colonizing a single alien planet and this seemed like the only thing that fit the bill.

But holy shit, even with the expansion it's just bad. Well worse than bad, it's BORING. Seriously, how do you make a game about competing to colonize an alien world BORING??

The aliens barely attack and are basically destructible terrain obstacles by the mid-game and the other factions don't even try to expand into your territory enough to get aggressive.

This is literally NOTHING HAPPENS: THE GAME. Seriously, who at Firaxis thought this was a good idea? It could've been such an awesome game IF THINGS ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Played a game with Xenophobe/Pacifist/Egalitarian race and tried going "tall" until the Unbidden spawned right next to me and the Awakened FE I'm allied with is too stupid to move its ships anywhere forcing me to do nothing but defend (Unbidden have 4x my fleet), so I've been in a stalemate for hours and probably planning to start a new game. Explored the entire universe, got all Traditions and beat the super monsters / researched pretty much everything already so it's not like there's anything new to do even if I did survive.

Up until that point however I had literally zero wars or any sort of external issues to sort through to the point I could ignore the rest of the galaxy altogether up until the Unbidden arrived, so I'm considering ramping up the difficulty. What are the optimal galaxy starting settings? How much does the AI cheat on higher difficulties?

Also, which one of these is the most fun to play if I want new unique content?

Ditch pacifist as they can't declare proper wars, unless you want to do nothing but twiddle your thumbs around forever after the initial expansion phase is over. Seriously, picking pacifist is nothing but watching numbers go up even with Utopia's "tall" additions that only unlock much later in the game.

I got the new quadcore cpu, it still grinds to a halt past 150-200 years (well not halt, but "fastest" speed becomes something around gamestart "fast" or even slower, and everything isn't smooth anymore, micropauses everywhere), you can finish the game around that date though, it's not worth it trust me, it's basically ck2 but without all the fun parts, you better get into it or eu or vic or something, stellaris will last you a couple days till you see everything it has to offer and it doesn't offer much, whole game boils down to navy spam past early. You have multiple years to get money for your pc before they have a chance to turn this game into something worthwhile with god knows how many dlcs.

I got "chosen one" from the shroud for my governor, but I think event chance is pretty low, and you won't get to shroud for a while anyway. If you still want to be a "good guy" or diplomatic akin to pacifists then Xenophile makes your people like aliens and them like you in turn. This means giving citizenship to aliens you happen to conquer, while independent alien empires also like you more provided they aren't the opposite Xenophobes. If not that then Materialist is a great general ethic as improved research speed never hurts.

So there is a built-in trait modifier that gives a specific leader immortality? Good to know, now I just need to figure out the proper coding so I can add it via console commands.
So can I just type into the command console something like "add_trait_leader 1 leader_trait_chosen_one"? Or is there not a way to do that and I have to trigger the event instead?

(I tried "add_trait_leader 1 leader_trait_chosen_one", I also tried "trait_chosen_one" "ruler_trait_chosen_one", and so on, it doesn't work, but maybe the code has a different name for the "Chosen One" trait, so I'll keep looking)

This only applies to other nations and races. Which makes sense; unless you're a progressive hipster people actually don't care for people wanting to enslave or eradicate others.

Your own population not only puts up with it but is happy about it. Even hard authoritarian empires has slaves that are generally content with being slaves, knowing they're serving a greater good.

Most definitely yes, Utopia didn't really add so much that if you disliked the game before that you're going to like it now.

Mid- and endgame still suffer from complete lack of events and base gameplay still boils down to same shit: if you're expansionist then it's business as usual with deathstacks / blobbing and if you're pacifist then you still don't have anything to do but wait forever for the numbers to slowly go up. Utopia only changes that you aren't "completely" useless without massive expansions through the addition of megastructures, but they're unlocked rather late and after you've built them it's not like there's suddenly anything new to do, they just ensure that you aren't completely eclipsed by militarist races as fast as before.

Tradition mechanic is also kind of silly. Instead of being something like picking a specialization you instead unlock all of them eventually, especially true if you picked modifiers that give bonuses to Unity generation.

And most people who actually play other paradox title (ie: not you) realize that it does take some time for these games to mature and become great. Stellaris is still fun, but like CK2, EU4, etc. it's going to take a year or two of development and expansions to be the game we want it to be.

Comparing it to CK2/EU4 as it is right now isn't fair. Compare Stellaris to CK2 at the release of Swords of Islam, or EU4 and Wealth of Nations. Well, I mean, you can't, since you're lying. :^)

>>173530474
I don't think the idea is fundamentally bad either, it's just that the AI has pretty bad problems with resource allocation and building priorities, You'll notice this if you look at the the little thought bubble in the sectors screen. I think a big part of the problem is that the AI has a hard time handling the priorities for multiple undeveloped planets at once, it looks like it cycles through each planet, does a priority check, builds a building according to it's priority definitions, then moves on to the next, it does this irregardless to the total output of sector resources it seems, so large sectors run at an almost perpetual mineral deficit due to the addition consumer goods, it also looks like the AI is having trouble with global food since most of the sectors I've made have problems with food deficits as well. Add on top of all that the AI still makes boneheaded decisions regarding building placement, and it makes sectors just bad over all. If you make small sectors, with only one or two inhabited planets and lots of orbital mining bases, they don't do to bad, but the utility engine managing sector behavior still need some overhauling.

The only reason why companies don't strap nuclear waste to a rocket and fire it into the sun is twofold: one, it's really expensive to do that right now, and two, MUH TERRORISM.

When the government establishes security and the cost of launching is streamlined then you'll see them do that. But for right now, it's safe to bury it in the empty, uninhabited, undeveloped desert down the road for 20+ years and come back to it once it's no longer active.

It's hideously expensive to launch even the lightest payloads possible in to space. So launching tons of heavy ass radioactive minerals into space is pretty economically unfeasible right now, there's also the fact that space craft routinely fail and explode on their launch pads or in the atmosphere, so tipping them with fuck loads of radioactive material is just asking for a fuckhuge nuclear disaster.

Solar and wind are interconnected and are both finite. How do you utilize solar energy when there are no more stars
>>
>>173534169

Wind is mostly tapped and not a very good energy source because of how intermittent it is.

Solar is also not a good energy source because solar panels are very capital and labor intensive and take a lot of energy to make per square meter, and there is just not that much energy in a square meter of sunlight, even if you weren't limited by energy conversion losses.

However, since it presents itself as a solution to a problem, it is extremely profitable if you can sucker the government into giving you subsidies to cover your inevitable losses.
>>
>>173534169
>he thinks solar is infinite

Solar has a terrible cost-return ratio. The most advanced solar panels make back their cost WITH government subsidies after 100 years or so. However, most solar panels at best will need to be replaced in half that time. It's a net loss and will cripple economies if governments go full funding for it.

Wind takes up too much space for the amount of energy it produces. "Wind farms" produce so little power there is a reason why you aren't seeing a massive expansion of wind.
>>
>>173533635
>send the waste off into FUCKING SPACE

Nuclear fuel tends to be extremely dense, which means it'd cost an unbelievable amount to get it out of LEO. Keep in mind, most modern rockets aren't capable of transporting heavy payload outside of LEO.

Secondly, rockets are not 100% reliable. If one detonated prior to exiting Earth's gravity well, you'd end up with radioactive waste being scattered over a huge area.

Carbon nanotubes or graphene ribbons could theoretically do the job, the problem is that we don't currently have the ability to manufacture them to the desired lengths without imperfection the molecular structure. I do actually. It consumes a lot of energy. We're not going to try nuclear until it's our last resort because most people fear it like they did witchcraft. So by the time we're mining for it frantically, we won't have the energy reserves to mine things with modern methods and be cost-effective.

If it costs 20 grand to run a mining machine for an hour and it only recovers 10 grand worth of uranium you're fucked. Slave labor is effective because of how low cost the work is. That's why EVERYONE used slaves before machines were invented.

>>173537813

to be honest I actually think the opposite. I think forcing people to actually use gene modding and getting advantages to having a multi-species empire, at least early on, would be a great way to incentivize early war or attracting migrants.

I don't think the Stellaris devs should neuter or remove the 'purge everything' playstyle, but you should at least be stuck on your home planet type (dry, wet, cold) for a while.
>>
>>173538752
Missiles are just garbage all game.

They're bad early because your fleet will launch every missile at the same few targets. Works fine against battleships but early on when you're just fighting corvettes it means you're wasting most of each volley because the corvettes will get killed in a few rockets anyways. This is a problem with kinetics and lasers too, but since they fire and travel faster it's less pronounced.

Late game missiles are near useless because point defense completely counters them, and the ai loves to stack it.

The one niche you get out of starting with missiles is the chance to get torpedos early, which are very good for taking down the initial spaceports of enemy civs, but even with them you'll still struggle in fleet to fleet combat against lasers and kinetics.
>>
Why do people say playing tall isn't possible?
I get that you can get blitzed by players/AI playing wide way before you can get really tall, but people act like it isn't feasible.
With Habitats you can destroy mining/research stations orbiting planets and replace them with a habitat. You can have a shit-load of them in your home system if it's Sol.
Not to mention all the wonders.

I know people will counter by saying players playing wide will achieve them first and just snowball even more, which I understand. It just seems like people think playing tall isn't at all possible.

>Xenophobia means hate.
No, it doesn't. It is a dislike or fear (phobia) of things that are outside one's culture.

>They don't hate strangers
No, they just dislike the culture and technology that is ingrained in strangers. Since it is virtually impossible to separate the two in the modern era, for all intents and purposes, they don't like strangers.

>they're just not interested in them
Not interested to the point of literally shunning people from their society if they choose to become involved in that world.

>Amishes aren't KKK.
Now this is probably true. But then again, how many black Amish have you seen? :^)

I havent played many Paradox games but coming from traditional 4X games like Age of Wonders The first one was the best I adore Stellaris.

Are any other Paradox games worth playing?

CK2 is fun if you like dynasty-building roleplay stuff with incestuous murder shenanigans

EU4 is fun if you like map-painting micromanaging Risk gameplay
>>
>>173545474

I like Crusader Kings 2 a lot but most of their other games are vastly different. This is pretty entry level. EU4 would be the closest in difficulty and complexity. Pirate it and the DLC.
>>
>>173545474
Stellaris is still pretty mediocre.

I wouldn't advise paying for all the shit necessary to properly play EU4 or CK2
but both are good.

Vicky2, EU3 HoI3 and HoI2 are their best.

EU3's music is just superb. Nothing catches the age of exploration as well.

A lot, but I don't know if you'll like them.

Take a look at this thread, most people here hate Stellaris for being lite.
Now, consider the following : if Stellaris is disliked for being lite, what does that mean about Paradox's OTHER games?
And then, with that answer in hand, consider whether or not you can handle, financially and mentally, a "full" Paradox game, given that they like to make half-finished game, and then release DLCs.

Yes oil sucks for the planet but if we didn't have oil wed have to go back to slave labor. Either we suffer or the environment does, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Small maps are harder because fewer resources overall means smaller fleets, so dealing with awakened empires and crises is going to be more difficult. Larger maps make for longer games but are generally much easier especially if you lower the number of AI empires.

>we helped these guys go on a massive raping spree across europe (not even just germany, mind)
>but they're just enemies of our enemies so it doesn't count

>we completely revoked the rights of our own citizens and imprisoned them in camps without warrants
>but it doesn't count because we weren't gassing them

>we went to war with someone on the other side of the world under the same guy who literally signed an executive order to confiscate gold across the country
>but we were definitely good guys acting on entirely pure intentions

>meanwhile CIA documented performing human experiments even after the war was over

FDR was the most power-hungry president in US history, and yet somehow (enormous amounts of propaganda being the most likely reason) he's also historically referred to as one of the best. The idea that anything the US did in his era could be considered morally justified is laughable.

It's just a random scientist.
I don't know if anything bad happens, I took him in a bunch of time with different empires of different ethics, and I never had anything bad.
If you don't take him, you just get some physics research and he disappears, IIRC.
