Yeah but slavery and the new factions are a pain in the ass I've found.

Just finished a 4 player mp game we used to learn the new shit(tripped up twice really hard on expansion, nothing optimized for the patch, final nail in the coffin was unbidden two sectors off my capital despite no jump tech anywhere).

Was materialist, authoritarian, militarist.
I eventually had to free slaves because they were revolting and pulling hunger strikes and shit to make them worthless. Thankfully there isn't a penalty for previously enslaved any more, because it's automatic rather than pop by pop selection.
The bad part is they end up egalitarian, and spread that. And then you have an egalitarian faction in an authoritarian nation.
And unlike all the other polarized factions, egalitarian was at 0% forever, and I could never stamp it out.

>>173335162
What's wrong with it?
I only took the flesh is weak part and didn't get to finish it, but that itself is a pretty solid buff to your leaders and pops.

And everyone being synths at the end sounds pretty crazy as well.

>>173335145
>>173335804

>>
>>173335162
>unique portraits depending on your species type holy shit not the default synth portrait
>better bonuses on par with the AI crisis bonus considering ascending is a practical war with an FE type + loss of all species traits
>option to use ai crisis ships/planets
>more quests/lore while you are ascending instead of radio silence with no pushback from factions who should oppose it
>allow player to have multiple options on organic relationships (e.g. crisis/cybrex war path, forced assimilation out of conquest/sympathy for lesser lifeforms, peaceful relations, etc.)
>allow diplomacy with ai crisis forces because it's fucking dumb that they call you organic and fight another fully-synth species in their goal to "eliminate all organics"
>>
>>173335472
Anything would be a good successor to ES.
Anything would have a hard time being a good successor to EL.

No idea on release date but I know the next update is the arbitrary "we're done now, 1.0." patch.

Stellaris and HoI4 are probably both their two completely fucked launches.

And yeah, the games aren't complicated, there are just a decent number to things to learn, and they do string together decently well.

I'd stay away from CK2 in its current state unless you can roleplay really well.

EU4 is decent though the DLC practices there are shocking.
Best policy is to just buy the basegame and pirate the DLC.

For older games HOI2, HOI3 and EU3 are probably their best games, along with Vicky2, but Vicky2 aint for everybody.
HOI3 is also quite different to anything either side of it with its complete OOB autism.

EU3 has their best soundtrack, I'd say by far but that's one of the unexpected boons of Stellaris, finally a competitor for the title.
Especially loving the vicky2-esq tracks of utopia, really nice change of pace.

>>173338706

Yeah on the Age of Imperial Age thing, I just played some AOE1, and it definitely works better. Got a lot of action even in tool and bronze. I think the higher unit count in 2 makes for a faster eco, so age tech is more affordable, and town centers melt early armies so effectively you can't really do much but in aoe1 some axe or swordsmen in an undefended base is murder. As soon as you get a reasonable ability to attack TC's castles start going up which you can't really attack well until you get trebuchets. So the best thing to do is just rush imp.

Dunno how much is down to the AI playstyle but I definitely noticed it watching some stream games too. No meaningful fights can really take place early.

The lead for AOE1 left to make EE, so maybe 2 was just not balanced as well because of that?
>>
>>173339031
I also noticed there's no silly no-food units. All human units cost food. Feels better somehow.
>>
>>173339031
You can win with early pressure if the map and the opponent allow it, but it'll take progressing further and capitalizing on an eco advantage as a result of the raiding, or the map control it offers.
>>
>>173339031
I still disagree.
>>
>>173339004
I've been playing Paradox games since HoI2, I just used to pirate them completely. Darkest Hour was the first I actually bought and remains the one I've played the most. Which probably makes it even worse because I know what jews Johan and co are and yet I've been giving them more money for less content.
>>
>>173339409
Yeah I'm the same. I feel particularly bad for the CK2 DLC though.

I've avoided HOI4 completely up until this point though, which is something.

And Utopia is straight up good. But I shouldn't have bought the base game.

Sure, they don't necessarily deserve to die. But, when a person willingly enters a lion's den and they get ripped apart, it is a good thing that they died so that hopefully others like him fucking learn and his stupid ideas that convinced him "hey it's find if I walk into this lion's den" is gone with his death.

You'd be surprised how fucking stupid Swedes actually are. Hopefully shit like this happens more, only that the people who die are the genuinely retarded ones.

influence is super important, width only really refers to colony count, not literal width.
You want to claim a lot with border outposts.
the last techs for the science lab upgrades are very important to get.

I haven't actively tried a tall nation but you can take them decently far. It's pretty similar to Civ though.
Few cities, make the absolute most out of your tiles and population.

>>173339940
Yeah I know, that's what I'm saying.
drush or feudal aggression(typically archers) can win you the game, although drush only rarely.
Depends on the map if the enemy has a safe gold or a forward gold, how easily they can wall and so on.
you don't kill them in feudal but you can make sure you win in castle.

Castle is 50% of the game and Dark Age is 30% of it.

It's a weird game with a weird meta
Imperial doesn't always come into play, and it's just Castle+

Did Utopia actually manage to get a single thing right? No, music isn't a valid answer since that has no impact on the overall game.
Like holy shit, here's how you fucking fix it:
1. Make a fucking private sector.
It makes no sense to have an authoritarian and egalitarian ethic when both are authoritarian with varying degrees of public liberty.
2. Create a fucking political system.
This isn't even a pathetic case of "expand on X", because the current political system is "time for elections lol" or "you're leader is kill". The factions could've been handle SO MUCH better.
3. Make more civics that actually matter.
If you pick mechanics you're literally cucking yourself.

if you're at plasma already you should be able to out DPS a spaceport with whatever you have.
Point defense is very important and works really well, to the point that it makes all missile builds completely unviable. But against a bigger target that does large damage against one unit at a time you don't play defensive, you get in close and dog him down quick.
Point defense is wasted DPS there.

So apparently the AI don't know that you can't just destroy the Unbidden's portal now. Yeah, much more satisfying.
Also the hardpoints system was a good thing. And well, EaW's battles work like an RTS or RT tactics game. In Stellaris, your fleets are just pretty graphics, you don't get to order this and that ship to focus fire on this enemy. And there isn't much variance, if you save before a battle, you've good odds to get the same results over and and over again.

Though honestly I never played EaW without mods, probably increased my enjoyment a buttload.

So I just watched the full Starfish lets play with Wiz and Nobunaga. And Wiz explained that they take all the feed back from player and put into seperate 'boxes' then work exclusively on one of those boxes based on what they think is most important. In the case of Utopia, that 'box' was empire customization

So my question is this: was anyone actually complaining about empire customization?

Been playing since day 1 and the major complains I've seen have always been

>Fucking War score
>Fucking fleet combat
>Fucking Diplomacy

Or am I mistaken?

>increase speed

Make it high damage, low range weapon.
With low range and high speed things like over kill will decrease - less missiles in air - less lost dps when target is destroyed as they not redirect
>increase damage vs shields and armor penetration
>make PD systems take a attachment slot and be short range - personal defense

>>173360391
Upkeep cost is % of production cost
So costly corvette(capitalist one) with all this fancy gadgets and shields cost 2x to produce and upkeep than Soviet ones with no shields.
Soviet one have the same HP and firepower so you can produce two times more for the same price and gain 2x firepower and the the same durability(2x Hp but no shields).
SyS Def Corvette have all cheapest stuff inside but cost 4 times less and you still have the same HP and similar(little less) firepower.
You can easily build 2x SyS Def over fancy Capitalist corvettes for half the price and pay the same upkeep at 200% of navy limit

Speed or re-targetting(probably hard to implement) would fix the overkill issue yeah.
damage is okay, maybe a little more, better immunity to PD so that PD is a partial reduction rather than total protection
lower range is stupid, goes against the theme of missiles and their current strength(along with "countering" evasion tanking)

100 years in. Colonized one of the arms of the galaxy. I think I'm doing alright, though I need to invest more heavily into the military. Found Sol and the UN humans, they've had a hard time with an advanced alien empire who built around them.

I'm friendly with that advanced empire, "Mandate of Pelisi" and I don't feel the need to declare war on them just to link up the two human empires. Beyond that I don't like how my empire is long and thin - going halfway around the galaxy, with alien empires blocking my way inside the galactic core and leaving me with the stars on the periphery of the galaxy.

Also found out that you need Zero-Point Power and Fortress tech to unlock Megastructures, would have been nice to know.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to terraform to Gaia worlds? The option is there but the tooltip seems incomplete and I didn't see a tech that allowed me to terraform a planet again into a gaia world in several hours.

Can't speak for after latest update but it only effects it if you dont have enough, so whether you have a surplus of 1 or 100 food on the planet, growth rate will remain the same. if you have a deficiency then it'll go down.
I would imagine the same applies post update aswell

Alright from the files themselves.

GROWTH_BASE = 25 # Required growth for a pop to become fully grown.
GROWTH_INCREASE_PER_POP = 1.65 # Increased growth cost per pop planet [+ POP_INCREASE_PER_POP*(num_pop - 1)]
GROWTH_INCREASE_FACTOR = 1.12 # Increased growth factor [+ (num_pop - 1)^POP_INCREASE_FACTOR]

FOOD_SUSTAINED = 1 # Amount of food each pop require
FOOD_SURPLUS_BASE_GROWTH = 1 # Amount to grow if there is a surplus
FOOD_SURPLUS_EXTRA_GROWTH = 0.5 # Extra growth from food surplus (scales to Pops)
FOOD_SURPLUS_EXTRA_GROWTH_MAX = 2 # Max extra growth from food surplus

So probably somewhere around a max of twice the speed if I'm reading this right?

I really don't get the point of having 5 different purge types that all accomplish almost exactly the same thing.

For that matter I don't get the point of having fine-grained consumer goods and species rights settings for EVERY SPECIES.

Considering how shallow Stellaris is, and how 99% of the effect of theae policies is going to be felt on sector worlds where you have no feedback, I just can't imagine a situation where you would have to actually put any care and consideration into managing the interplay of species rights / material prosperity effectively.

Do these settings actually meaningfully interact with any other mechanics, or is this a meme feature?

OK, they don't all do the /exact/ same thing, but I think the point to make is that the feature is very front-loaded.
It's like (pre-1.5) armies. You could fuck about for years fine-tuning which species your armies come from and what modules the individual divisions have, but when orbital drop time rolls around it won't in prractice make any difference whether or not you swap out a Grognarkian Psy Army with Clone Commandos for an Okivedian Xenomorph Army with Neo-Concrete. 'Cos all distinctions just kinda get covered up by the fact that you can and will build 400 divisions and just zerg rush.

I feel all these settings are pretty much the same. You apparently have a lot of control, but the amount of time you could spend carefully optimising for every species vastly exceeds the possible rewards of this optimisation.

Well if someone's turning off sectors because they're too bad at the game to handle a 25% flat tax or too autistic to be able to tolerate tile/pop inefficiency, then I agree with your ad hominem.

But if someone's turning off sectors because "Muh delegation muh inefficiency" is obviously a bad-faith, after-the-fact excuse for Paradox AI being pants-on-head retarded at resource management, or the fact that sectors take a hundred interesting planet-specific demographic/ethos problems and just fucking throw them into a blender then don't let you interact with the bloody smoothie, vastly decreasing the complexity and interactivity of (an already not-enough-stuff-to-do-domesticly) game for no good reason... well, in that case, go fuck yourself Paradrone.

does this mean you can't increase the map size beyond this point and can only play with super-dense modded galaxies?
>>
>>173383765

It's more realistic to have space refugees now that there are big by race empire slavery laws and stuff. So they'd flee their cruel masters and you can accept them or turn them away.

Truth is Unity is a great update for those who want more complex multi-species societies, but sort of went a step back on the whole political purging faction stuff from before.

That's not true. This game isn't hard to win, ai is stupid and the game is unbalanced, all you have to do is not get fucked by map generation and empire placements. Also you need allies to protect from wide militaristic fags. I mean it would be cool if you could win the game without leaving your home system, but broken. Don't go too tall or you'll crumble.

Gwesibor Crusaders, an awakened empire just declared war on some 3 world nobody called Mutyx Administration which is half way across the map from them. The awakened are fanatic crusaders but they're not touching the two technologist empires right next to them. No idea why. It's also "only" 2312 so it's relatively early for them to wake up.
>>
>>173357704
You can. It's just not direct assault. You'll need to slowly build up your fleet, draw his out and destroy it when he sends it against you.

I recommend keeping a few undefended planets to do so.

Eventually you'll get enough warscore to annex his planets.

Its fun. The internal factions are cool, sort of like a continuous series of miniquests you have to maintain.

Some stuff isnt quite balanced right. Nearly everything released seems to benefit tall over wide which is fine but pisses off /civ4xg/ who only plays wide

Dont play hive minds first, it actually removes more features than it adds, its sort of like a pre patch version of the races.

Combat is still the same

I've never really done anything with robits. Do I just plop them down in all my mineral producing tiles?
Also I'm researching droids right now, which are better. Do I have to delete all my robits and rebuild them as droids or is there an upgrade to droid button?
Finally, I have resettlement off and one of my planets was kind of small and some of my people have grown into spots that have minerals and I can't get them to leave since to put a robit there for the mineral bonus.

I dunno, I regularly see people in this thread say those traits aren't as useful as other ones, and in a way I kind of agree at least about Enduring, what with all the lifespan increasing shit you can get.
Most times my first leader dies just short of all the lifespan techs and my second one becomes practically immortal.
I guess with Quick Learners there are better uses for trait slots over leader leveling?

Are the chinchillas on the inward edge of the spiral arm? If so you might want to get rid of them quickly just so you have a little bit of breathing room for when you can upgrade warp and explore past the arm.
If not, turtling isn't going to do shit against an FE but apparently Habitats are pretty strong so you might be able to play catch up with your neighbour while dangling monthly minerals in their faces to hold them off from beating the shit out of you.

There are lifeforms even on Earth that are genderless or hermaphroditic, though. I don't know about more than 2 sexes on Earth, but it seems completely feasible that an alien race could evolve as such. Even just a simple selection during empire creation like Genderless/Hermaphrodite/Bigender/Trigender would go a long way for variety. I'm designing alien races, I want them to be alien rather than just a funny looking human. Sure it doesn't have a gameplay function but neither do race appearance, flag, ship sets, etc. I just want more options.

>>173397268
It's minor but it just kind of irks me when I get leader events that refer to my alien race as he or she, especially when they're Plantoids/Fungoids as you said. I'm sure the same thing will happen when they're all robots because of mechanist acension too. Or when Paradox releases Silicon races or something.

It's kinda dumb how much hivemind pigeonholes you into a specific playstyle. Just propagates the evil horde hivemind archetype even further. I'd like to be able to play a peaceful or isolationist hivemind without being forced into being fanatical purifiers on crack. Hopefully a future patch will flesh them out more, it feels to me like they were just rushed out without any thought put into it.

I guess the idea is that they're forced into such a limiting playstyle to compensate for their massive bonuses, but there must be a better way I'm sure. Make some hivemind civics that give you back diplomacy options or allow you to integrate new races into the hive at the cost of the military bonuses or something.

>I don't know about more than 2 sexes on Earth
Plants are often tri-sexed, a few invertebrates are too. It's not a big leap from m+f to m+h+f since it's basically using material you already have, but hermaphroditism isn't really cost beneficial for long-lived, mobile organisms because it encourages genetic stagnancy which makes you vulnerable to diseases and genetic defects. That's why in invertebrates it's often an alternating generation thing, some generations are h and some are m+f, or in response to environmental pressure (h in good times for faster breeding, m+f in bad times for fitter breeding). Obviously longer-lived species can't adapt like this, so they generally go with the fitter approach, since that's more cost effective for their long lifespans.

There are also species with more than three sexes on earth. They're almost entirely fungi, which often evolve very strange and complex breeding cycles and sexes that are really not very different in function. Some fungi have thousands of sexes.

Of course, the key thing here is that overly-complex mating arrangements aren't beneficial. They actually make it difficult for a species to breed and susceptible to die off, since you'll need more individuals to produce working offspring. It also provides no real benefit you won't get from two or even one sex(es). Having a fourth gender won't do anything special you can't accomplish with f+m, as I said above even tri-sexed species operate on the same mechanism.

There's also something called sequential hermaphroditism, but it's completely different. It basically just means the individual can (not necessarily will) change its sex at least once in its lifetime; they're never both sexes at once so it doesn't have the same benefits or costs, it's pretty much just a tool to maintain sex ratios in the population. This one actually does occur in longer-lived, more complex animals, including vertebrates, but nothing with external genitals.

Also, since I ran out of space:

>Genderless
This is a really bad idea. It has one benefit hermaphroditism has (fit individuals will pass on their genes virtually unchanged), a beefed up version of the same's (really, really fast replication), and all its disadvantages multiplied a thousand fold. It's really going to cripple a species in the face of any environmental upset.

Unless, of course, the species has a rapid mutation rate. Leads to even budding often resulting in significantly altered DNA, which creates genetic variability. This relies on them being able to absorb massive die-off and equally quick recovery whenever a problem does arise, and also that the offspring be expendable in case its mutation is actively harmful. This isn't tenable for a complex species, let alone one that needs to learn and grow to join a society like a sapient one, they'd breed slower than a bacteria and so can't bounce back so quick and can't afford so much offspring loss. There's a reason it's unicelluar and only the most simple animals that do nonsexual reproduction.

Hyperlanes only, and pirates on all known paths out to the south and east. There is only one path north and that's going around the galactic core.

This is shaping out to be a nice start, since those pirates can block others from approaching my fanatic pacifist nation.

How hard would it be to make a Natural Psychics trait? I just like the idea of a science minded civilization hijacking the psion way because they are naturally psionics even if it's normally impossible.

Full orbital bombardment will eventually genocide all pops on a planet, right? I'm killing my inferior neighbors, but I don't really want their crappy planets, I just wanted to kill them. Worst case I'll just annex everything then resettle them all to my non-shitty planets.

Any slaver society obviously would have had slaves of their own species before becoming spacefarers. If it bothers you that much, take the thing that gives you a subservient species on your home planet.

This mod adds a trait that increases the chance of getting Psionic Theory as a tech (and gives your armies a 10% damage boost) though I'm unsure if it means that Materialists can grab it post-Banks.

My favorite thing in early stellaris was going ultra thinwide with 1 robot pop planets and having mining stations for all my resource/research generation. Also genociding everything (including my original biological race) as Collectivist.

Did they ever make this playstyle feasable again after patching it out early on?

Anon, all the "Nova" came much later because of Spanish and Portuguese explorers and settlers. Romans very rarely named anything "nova", nearly everytime they merely added a roman-sounding prefix to the names the locals used and sometimes they translated the name into Latin properly.

It doesn't stop there. They will ask you to colonize another planet. Then they ask you to investigate why their colony went dark. Turns out the colony is taken over by revolutionary communists, and they ask you to transport their soldiers back to the homeworld where they take it over and keep updating you on their commie developments.
Shit is fucking hilarious.
>>
>>173405353
Shit I'm not there yet.
On the other hand I got that one of them on the second colony really misses her family and she's annoying everyone, so I have to carry her back to the old.

How is building tall and megastructures?
>>
>>173405457
only the initial evacuation has limited time, you can just keep the gas bag waiting.
>>
>>173405473
it feels like the opportunity to build shit comes pretty late and costs are so high that you're compelled to go wide for minerals anyway.
>>
>>173405473
Shit.

The amount of minerals/energy you need to build a viable tall empire can only get got quickly by owning a huge number of systems/worlds. Otherwise you just get curbstomped by a neighbouring empire while you're saving up slowly over the course of hundreds of years.

You can go wide, then abandon worlds (if you're authoritarian, which is also shit now) once you've built a tall centre, essentially like a Fallen Empire. But why would you?

Did you miss the "Xenophobe" part? You can slaughter them all without anyone batting an eyelid, but a bit of forced labor or other types of slavery to show your species' superiority against what they'd consider sub-humans and everyone supposedly throws a fit?

There is no conflict with a species considering *themselves* better than the rest and thus affording their brothers individual freedoms while seeing outsiders as trash who have no rights.

The "Hive minded" trait needs to become available much, much earlier.
It's OK that it's not something you can get until after the first war or two, but being required to play a shit version of Fanatical Purifiers until you get endgame tech and perks is ludicrous.
