I'm playing babbies first roguelike, hoping it would be a good cut-your-teeth kind of deal. Am I correct in assuming that I need to be able to Levitate or some shit to get those cock-tease loots over there? I've checked the commands and asked google about some sort of jump function but no dice.

>how do you proof that
>where is the science and mathematics in magic and casting
I'm not a wizard yet (4 years more), but:
That depends on the school.
For more pure ones, you can prove by formula that a magic missile will move at specific speed, not hit any unintended target (unless the target moves faster than the missile) and not lose more than a specific % of power.

For soft magic such as transmutation, you need to statistically record each casting and analyze that. It doesn't yield certainty, only "evidence", so transmuters are (understandably) lower in hierarchy than say, conjurers.

Hexes do not really classify as magic. It's more like pseudomagic for failed wizards. Here the "theories" are barely supported and are more like ideologies that "make sense" (only to speaker and his minions).
Also, there is evidence that a non-virgin can learn to cast hexes, which would prove that it is not true magic.

>>
>>171974307

also how the fuck do i get a perpetual source of batteries for a welder?
>>
>>171979726
get a vehicle welding kit, which is a welder in the form of a vehicle part. you attach it to a car and run it off of the car's batteries (which you can charge with solar panels)
>>
WHO THE FUCK MAKES A RL WITHOUT A RANDOM NAME OPTION
>>
>>171979726
Either
>craft vehicle welding rig, which mounts to your car and runs on solar
>install a ups mod on your welder and a recharger in your car
>install integrated toolset bionic and use any of the ways to recharge bionic power
>I guess you could make a vinegar farm and craft batteries if you're going full autism

First one needs a recipe book, you can pull the recharger out of a humvee (but the ups mod is rare or needs a recipe).
>>
>>171978204
You don't really need a guide. Have high cooking and you can make the first blob frame, and from there it's blobfeed+mutagen+time.

Here's a couple of tips: don't bother with making more than the first 250 units of blob feed you made for the first frame. You can make it from slime pits/corpse pits (found in fema camps) much more quickly and easily.

Make your car with the really durable gray stuff, because while blob parts don't really "break" conventionally, it's annoying to replace all the damaged pieces: you can only replace, not repair.

The blob-tech engine is currently broken, you'll have to fix the code if you want to use it.

Most of your blob-tech only needs to be made once, then it can be cloned infinitely. This does not include many of the guns.

Gel Generators are amazing and you should add as many of them to your car as you can. They're more reliable than solar panels, but slower.

Many of the blob-tech guns shoot explosions. This is undesirable. Gel Razors are incredibly useful and you should make lots of them: they shoot homing, bouncing, piercing, high-damage projectiles that hit several zombies at once and can kill around corners. They also use a plentiful, light, low-volume ammo (blob feed) and can be mounted to your car for funsies. The only drawback is their inability to be fired without bracing.

I have cleared coffeebreak 3 times so far.
Perhaps the game is too easy, after all.

But still, dunno about the deathsword changes. It is still unbalanced. You flounder around first half of game and are death incarnate last half. The amulet, while giving some freedom, feels kinda overdoing it. They are fine in later game.

... Also, on the name of the amulet, I added it to the list of shitty artifact names, but it cropped up on that good amulet. Now if feels really shitty.

depends on who your playing, but in general it's better to pump your melee and evasion at lower depths and to get abilities later on. Personally I like flanking and dodging since they syngergize and lets' you keep moving to avoid getting surrounded in open rooms
>>
Isn't the problem with statsthroughskills that you can get incredibly high stats with no limit?
>>
>>172035380
Another way you could get stats that high legit is the prime muts + bionics, think you'd end up with 18 in every stat at a max.
>>
>>172032803
It's pretty good damage, plus they are still good at devices etc.
I have thought about restructuring essences, though.
Like merging VORPAL1 and VORPAL2, and making so VORPAL2 2nd rank. VORPAL2 from weapons could give +4 essences. So it would be 16 essences for VORPAL1 as deathscythe, 64/96 or something for VORPAL2.
Earthquake-essences could give an ability to cause earthquakes...
And generally adjust values. Dark and Chaos resists are bloody easy to get, so might increase the amount of essences needed.

Gotta think about the stuff. I probably will reverse my disenchantment changes mostly, though. It's bit too frustrating to lose rare essences ( while this does happen in old game and is sorta rare, there might be probably more elegant way to do it )

I think that conception was from an old iteration, where you got +1 stat per 3 levels of a skill.

Nowadays it's much less than that, though I suppose that you could grind infinitely for infinite stats still.

>>172038071
Well, it makes sense that you get stronger if you do exercise, but there should be a limit, humans can't just keep getting stronger and stronger, they will reach a peak eventually. There should be a limit, like, for example, the max stat you can reach would be your starting strength stat+5, so if you start with 10 strength your max would be 15, without counting CBM and mutations.

It would also make sense that you lose stats if you don't do any activities that use those stats.

You become invincible by the second day, ascend to godhood by third, by the end of the week you murder jewish/christian/muslim "capital G God", then you complain that things are too easy when you picked easiest of modes.

You never need to make any sort of tradeoffs like strength (bashing damage) vs. dexterity (dodge, hulk smash resistance) vs. perception (ranged).

Depends.

Ultimately, you want high defenses, and that may not mean "AC ~= EV".

Looking at the gameplay of a speedrunner (4thArraOfDagon), he'd put on a large shield (on a Formicid, mind you) if he had early access to it simply because it'd be a huge boost in SH for no Shield skill. Of course, it'd mess with his EV even with high strength, but it'd ultimately be worth the penalty.

I'm not an expert at Crawl's defense system, but what I've seen suggests:
1) SH potentially blocks attacks, especially weak ones, based on how much damage the attack does vs your SH value (more or less)
2) Then EV potentially lets you evade attacks entirely, based on the attack's accuracy vs your EV
3) And finally AC shaves damage off the attack if SH/EV failed to avoid damage. This might reduce the damage to 0 (commonly the case when fighting high AC enemies while you use low base damage weapons, where you can't seem to do any damage to them). More importantly, many types of armour have guaranteed damage reduction, so that even if SH, EV, and your AC roll manage to let a fully-powered attack through, you'll still reduce the damage taken by a stable percent.

A turncount speedrunner will usually prefer SH and EV since they can avoid damage entirely -- as many people know, healing is probably the single most time-consuming part of playing Crawl (and most other roguelikes). A regular player will usually want relatively equal amounts of each, although AC might be more desirable due to its guaranteed nature of defense.

wrong
SH is effectively just a second EV roll except slightly shittier in many situations and better in some others (OoD)

also "guaranteed damage reduction" only applies to enemy melee attacks, not spells, and is nowhere near important or relevant to your decision about which armor to wear

if you're playing split pool mode and you have some points that absolutely can't be spent on anything other than skills, just get things that will help you in the first few days rather than thinking about the long term, since in the long term you will get books etc to train those skills anyways
>>

Depends on how you intend to start.
If you can hope to get chemset early on, you want enough survival and cooking to make pheromones.
If not, enough combat skills to survive and rest to whatever you want unlocks from.

Depends on the start, if you're in the locked lab you could put points to get 3 cooking so you can make dynamite if you find the book, you could also put points into trapping and try to disarm those teleporter traps to get a teleporter, I think with 5 is enough if you're lucky but more would be better.

The Berlin Interpretation is literally something thought up by Ido Yehieli, Radomir Dopieralski, Jeff Lait, Mario Donick, David Ploog, and Christopher Brandt.

Only one of them has worked on a roguelike of consequence (dpeg), and he is, afaik, only a designer, and hasn't written any code of consequence.

Seriously, if the group who dreamed up that bullshit neologism had actually included people who worked on ADOM, ToME, nethack, or Angband, maybe it would have the dim shimmer of legitimacy.

As it is, it's pretentious, overwrought, and generally useless, which is why I think dpeg wrote it and then told the others.

Death #3, the father and blacksmith of the village went to look after his missing wife and child. He had an unpleasant confrontation with kobolds that took advantage of their superior range and kited him for a bit before he eventually tricked and killed them. Dragging himself through three floors, the injured Smith came upon the secret of the caves, a Necromancer armed with a loyal group of skeletons, kobolds, zombies, and rats. Before he knew it, Kor Smith was slain. With the entire Baker family now missing, the village Elder Krall must put an end to whatever is plaguing his village.

I'm shit at the game so I won't be able to enjoy the next version unless I git gud now. Unless the next version introduces a broken new starting build and I can use it as a crutch to get through the whole game.

The only new starting elements I recall being mentioned were dark dragon, which he has already told us is cursed slash + consume life, and a fire primary for faithful heart. What two abilities could heart have for a fire start?

It can't be both, one of the abilities has to apply ignite so the other can be used. And it can't be Combust because they already have that as a secondary ability.

Bask is kind of useless as a support ability, but isn't Pyre Rite way too strong to be a starting skill? It's the only support fire heal though(as opposed to a greedy fire heal like warmth/bask).

They're mostly there to flesh out the id-game. It can be useful to hang onto !slowing to test for free action boots, !confusion for clarity helms and !blindness for true sight lights/helms. Of course you can just bypass all that by getting Lore Master so whatever.

How disenchantment is handled, wearing amulets on hilt...
Instead of slay/kill being separated, kill_whatever is simply 2nd tier of slay, which requires 4 times the regular amount of essence. This applies to vorpal as well. Might tune the values though.

I am allowing some more exotic slays, such as OF_STUN ( very rare ).
I was thinking of OF_IMPACT counting towards a permanent mutation that grants you ability to cause earthquakes.

Of course, I need to balance quite a bit. Probably will nerf device-skill a bit in exchange of the amulets.

It's a shame really. Might make it give +1 to extra_dice-essences.

Anyway, I am also gonna touch game's economy again, a bit.
Last coffeebreak plays kinda showed me something:
Merchant's Friend is fucking amazing.

Even the watered down version is amazing when combined with the black market changes ( way to acquire healing potions etc. ). I was always swimming in consumeables etc. one I engaged the serpent.
I can't imagine the scumming you could do with rogue.

But maybe it isn't as big of a problem I would imagine. You could do same with just by farming healing potions the old fashioned way, and that's worse experience overall. Staves conserve them a lot, too.
Or maybe it is just native to the coffeebreak mode.

I guess I'll have to figure something out.
Although after that I'll try to move onto the new version.

Yeah.

Anyway,
the disenchantment code will be more akin to the old one, with exception that the disenchantment can still eat away those to_hits and to_dams from the weapon, but you can fix yourself at the enchanting-service.
Costs money though ( less than regularly though, since at endgame you don't want to sink 1 mil AU for +1 to hit that Oberon ate)

Anyway, builds updated. Oh yeah, and this breaks previous saves for deathswords, unfortunately.

>invisible screaming ghosts that drain experience, move quickly and erratically, and can phase through walls (making them impossible to hit)
>stat potions don't increase your stat if it was drained, so you have to restore it first, then quaff
>oh, too bad restore pots cost EVERYTHING and require recall scrolls (which never fucking drop) to go back to town
>even a half-troll warrior with high strength and decent dex only got two blows with a dagger and one with everything else, so have fun with your micropenis knife
>everything is cursed, identify scrolls are impossible to find, remove curse scrolls are even more unpossible, so fuck you, eat shit, enjoy damnation
>everything breathes acid, everything drains strength, and every level is filled with more invisible ghosts that drain wisdom (because fuck priests)
>your arrows are mostly destroyed upon use, so ranged fighting won't save you
>a ridiculous number of enemies that steal your gold and items, teleport away, and don't drop what they stole after being killed :^)
>the levels are gigantic and boring with usually only one up and down stairs per level
>even vaults are filled with nothing but garbage

on the whole it was a 7/10, not bad for literally the second roguelike ever made

the only unforgivable mark against it that makes it unplayable is the gigantic levels: if you shrunk the entire game down to tiny, populated floors and more frequent vaults, it would actually be fun to play instead of a tedious and frustrating grind

moria as it stands is like wandering through a long, gay maze only to maybe get punched in the balls at some point

>>
>>172146776
no because it misses out on the most important part of turnbasedness
the game stops being about taking your time and carefully considering the best option and starts being about rushing to the first "good enough" decision because you only have 1 second until you have to take the next turn
>>
>>172146776
Turn time limits can work as conducts, absolutely.

But making it part of a standard game? Eh...

I think the shorter the timer is, the more it moves away from being a roguelike. If it's a long timer (e.g. similar to official chess matches), then that'd be acceptable and an interesting twist; even to the degree that it's kind of "blitz-y" would be fun from time to time. Still, a music-based or faster roguelike would miss the point of turns.
>>
>>172148018
>then that'd be acceptable
Nope

It's like saying that permadeath being cut to item loss is acceptable. Or that grid based overmap but continuous battle map is acceptable.

Timed turns are equivalent to frames.
>>

>>172149272
Tactics games turns could be equivalent to roguelikeness.
After all, if spending resources to move x squares is fine, spending resources to attack x times is fine, charge attacks are fine, then spending "time points" to do both in one move in a generic way should be fine too.

This would be a bit of a stretch of a definition, but it's definitely closer to roguelike version of turn-based than time limits on turns.

I can't really agree, unless you mean it gives you no reason to play fifty bad day tweakers until you finally survive for max points. You still want to do the early game fab/tailoring/survival grind and spend your skills on better things.
>>
>>172150714
You want to start with some cooking and survival for muh pheromoans, possibly some fabrication for unlocks and some combat skills for survivability (faster looting means faster grinding).

And lack of incentive to startscum then lmaogodmode for the rest of the game is also good.

It doesn't really help with tailoring and usually doesn't do much for fabrication (unless you want to craft early chemset), but it still improves early game by a fair bit.
>>
>>172149941
I feel that the difference between a Tactics game and a Roguelike game is in the normal flow of the game. In a Roguelike, those special moves are a break from the normal flow of gameplay and frequently a limited resource, where in a Tactics game moving and attacking at once with your whole party is the norm.
I wish I could properly quantify it, but it's all feelings right now.

Yes I was pretending to be butthurt because I thought it would be funny.

It's only really worth casting the tier 4 and 5 version of it. Maaaybe tier 3 if you have very high spell stat.

The chance to shrug it off is based on the monster's level versus a combination of your level, your spell stat, and the tier of egowhip you cast. Going up one "tier" of egowhip is the same saving throw increase as gaining 14 levels or 14 points of casting stat.

Anyway, I decided to remove amulets from deathswords.
While they patched up spotty early game nicely, they made them bit too powerful later on, plus it bit clashed with the theme of the race.
Instead I gave them early AC boost ( in addition that earlier base-hp boost ). Hopefully it's easier to get disenchantment/shard resistance too since they require bit less essence - although I guess I could drop them to 2 essences for one pip.

Oh well.
Hopefully the essence-changes are good. Still gotta playtest them good bit.

How does the time limit work in Sil? Is it turn based, or on how many times I use stairs? If the former, what's stopping me from going up and down the same stairs repeatedly and just getting whatever spawns in the first room?
>>
>>172178707
>If the former, what's stopping me from going up and down the same stairs repeatedly and just getting whatever spawns in the first room?
When you go up/down stairs, there is a chance that you fall downstairs instead. This spawns you away from stairs and I think makes you take damage.
This can happen even if you don't scum, but affects stairscummers more.
>>
>>172178930
So it's turn based? Does anything happen if I stay way too long on a floor and the limit is up?
>>
>>172178707
It's turn based.
As the "min depth" gets lower you will be forced into lower levels. If you are at 100' and you take the up staircase, but your min depth is at 100' instead of 50' now, you will end up at 100' again.
If you are at 100' and your min depth is 150', taking the up staircase will actually bring you DOWN instead.

Note that spending forever in the early levels is not exactly a great idea. If you have plenty of spare time when you reach 950' you can hang out there for a while to get better items and xp before entering the bottom level.

There's a new unique demon called Leto that shows up with a group of modified death worms. The death worm default abilities are eat alive, numbing veil, emit sparks, mobility, and storm front. Leto's abilities are mind reader, eternal glory, reprogram, gland slam, rhino charge, chain lightning, resolute, and planet smash. His modifier is "emperor". It shifts stats towards the averages, grants light/dark/mind resistance, and grants reactive abilities of the none/mind/physical/electricity flavors.

HAHA yeah this was pretty much how it was: Suddenly pretty undulating patterns of struggling 2D roguelike physics. Concentrical clusterfuck mandalas of grenadehacks and shit blowing up everywhere.
There were three or four elite grenadiers I think. I didn't realize what was going on before I'd headshot nearly all of them
Everything was just blown up.

I don't think I've been so thoroughly rekt ever
It was hilarious though

>>
>>172214582
>not the huge explosion that explodes the whole city
If I had it I'd post it
>>
>>172213464
>>172214582

To briefly summarize, grenade hacks are explicitly coded to give you time to escape. If one starts beeping, and you immediately start running, you'll just barely get out of range before it blows up. This is tied to your current speed; if you've been slowed down, the grenade will actually take longer to detonate, specifically to give you time to escape!

So, you can outrange the grenadier, or use LoS tricks (all praise the OP Night Vision!). You can outrun his hacks, and wait for him to run out of ammo. You can be really tricky and blow him up with his own explosives; trigger the detonation while he's in range, then run away as fast as your legs can carry you!

If you really, positively cannot deal with them, there should be a blacklist mod for them that you can enable. But I really encourage you to experiment with them. The original author has attested to killing 3 grenadiers at once, with nothing but melee skill 3 and a crowbar. It's really just a matter of the game not being very explicit with how you're supposed to avoid them (run away from the hacks when they start to blow up!), and players getting seriously confused as a result.

Not the other guy, but being an outcast usually does coincide with depression.

If it's truly self-imposed isolation, it might not mean anything, but frequently enough, it's due to feeling like you've been rejected by society:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_rejection

Plus, it's really not a stretch of the imagination: humans are fairly social. Is it really surprising that outcasts would tend to be more depressed if they have literally no one to be social with?

You keep expanding my list of things you know about and consider furry
I wouldn't have considered Wakfu/Dofus to be furry but here you are shitposting with it

With a MiMo of Yred (or even Be), what are my ranged options? I haven't played in around two years. Magic is out the window.
I thought they nerfed ammo drastically so is my option to just rely on evocables?
>>
>>172233749
No, you're obviously the furry /co/ shitposter. I refuse to believe anything else.
>>172235951
No they nerfed evocables
Ranged is still broken strong, but personally I like to use my feet as a ranged option.
>>
Do you guys listen to music while playing? What are some good playlists you listen to?
>>
>>172236258
it asked Pandora for Super Eurobeat
I have a separate playlist for cowboy music

I like anime & game soundtracks.
The Metroid Prime series, for example, has some great ambience suitable for roguelikes.

Shoo. Go hang out with Molag. Nobody liked sludge elves.

Oops, accidentally the random quests badly.
Seriously, how did this slip in.

Oh well, it's fixed now.
And on other note, I also made rather major adjustment to coffeebreak mode. Stairs are always generated as shafts ( move 2 floors ) whenever possible.
It's gonna be good bit tougher.

Atmospheric prog metal, or some really hype faux 80's synth stuff. Or take me on, on repeat.
>>
>>172237140
Nah, it's just ||, the cursor was left in the image.
Basically that is part where game is deciding random quest uniques, and drops out some particular ones ( ex. Jack of Shadows and Robin Hood ).
I added Almagest-pentuples since they can resurrect clones of eachother, which probably wouldn't work well with code.

So I ended up writing it wrong and excluding all of the unique monsters, which ended up in silly generation like Kobold Lord Mughash being level 50 quest target.

Hehe don't worry, in that case. More people than most think have furry tendencies these days, because of all o' that artwork and character design turning prettier and prettier by the day.
I don't mind furries, really, and /rlg/ is a nice place.
At the end of the day we're all just people anyway.
New thread any second now, probably..
Best wishes, be it in Angband, beyond the chaos gate, the infinite dungeon, or on Cataclysm's highway!
