I guess hellband is a Zang variant? I've seen every single one of these classes except druid/warlock in PCB

it even has the whole "realm choice" thing with normal mages getting 2 and high-mages getting 1 etc
>>
Hi, does anyone here knows a bit about damage calculations in DCSS?

I am playing MiBe and have the choice between 2 weapons:
1. Broad Axe +8 of Speed (Mithril) and Magic Resist. It's base dmg is 13, but minimum cooldown is 0.4.
2. Executioners axe +5 of Antimagic. Base dmg is 18 and minimum cooldown is 0.6.

My question is, are the 0.2 seconds worth it? I could even level up shields and use it with the Broad Axe too? I don't know if I got super lucky with this weapon or if it is meh.
>>
>>172246281
Arga is pretty good but that Exec axe is great
>>
>>172246281
hand axe bec. it attacks faster
>>
>>172246281
speed is one of the best brands in the game. Arga is always a good choice and it allows you to use a shield for increased defenses

The exe axe is also a great option though, and antimagic brand will make it much safer to fight dangerous magic-users like archliches and oofs
>>
>>172245852

It certainly looks like it.

My only beef right now is that the fonts are sort of fucked up if you want to use something special.
>>
>>172247105
and the subwindows are really fucked up
they seem impossible to resize, the "monster recall" window doesn't seem to work at all, but the "monster list" window chances to "monster recall" whenever you attack something. which is annoying

Ok I think I will leave my Axe skill on 20 and take the Speed axe ("arga"), but keep the exec axe in inventory if I fight magic users, like when I go into Elven Halls.
Thanks for advise
>>
>>172250730

>>
>>172250628
demon veil tank
instead of tab you press wait command while everything kills itself on you
>>
>>172251071
the big axe is better than Arga
enchant that fucker to +9 because it's not an artifact
You'll thank me later.
>>
>>172251071
That doesn't work too well since you'll also need to remove your shield to use the exe axe.
Shields count as armor and take ~5 turns to put on or take off.

It's probably best to choose one of them and EITHER get 26 axe skill for exe axe or 15+ shield skill for 1h axe + shield.

the 2h axe is still going to be better damage. speedbrand is amazing but it just means that Arga is nearly as good damage while only using one hand, not that it's better damage
the advantage of Arga is the extra defense from a shield
>>
>>172251076
There should be a pasta in one of the OP links.
Other than that, be a hypergamous slut and discard your friends as soon as you see something better. Make sure to keep a lot of weak elemental attacks on your stuff to exploit weaknesses.

You need to get a feel of the game, though. Memorize the levels at which mons spawn and their stats. You will need to die a few times for that.
>>
>>172251401
>discard your friends as soon as you see something better.
The existence of recycle makes keeping them longer actually viable now.

As a general rule, support > fighter for your summoner. But going full nodamage makes some demons hard to capture because a damage-focused summoner will always deal more damage than any demon of the same level. A summoner will never deal as much damage as Bigfoot though.
>>

Recycle is an upgrade that, if you're a bad enough dude to sacrifice 1-2 of your slots for a rotating buffet of low-level demons and are gud enough to reliably get multiple recruits from corpse encounters, will give you more money than you'll ever spend

But if you're at the gud level where you're struggling to not die, Recycle doesn't help much and you should just get SEPI

Orb is pretty fun to play imo, but it's not really otabby. In Demon even though there is auto explore, you should still manually fight all your encounters either to clear them quickly for a link or because the encounter is roughly about as powerful as your own (summoner +3 demons vs anywhere from 4-6 demons + uniques)

"Trunk" means the most bleeding-edge version of Crawl:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trunk_(software)

Crawl's trunk is available on Github at https://github.com/crawl/crawl. If you've played online, then servers will have this listed as the "git" option: they compile the most recent commits after each day.

Since 0.19 has been officially released, the current trunk is intended for 0.20, so (right now) "trunk" refers to all alpha versions of 0.20. When 0.20 gets released, "trunk" will refer to versions intended for 0.21, and so on.

To reiterate and add on to things, trunk has the most bleeding-edge changes to the code BUT anything committed can be reverted or tweaked, too. For instance, a new race called Barachi (who initially were named Barachians) were pretty weak, but after a few months of being in trunk, the devs changed them to be quite a bit stronger overall.

ah fuck
apparently EVERY SINGLE 'A' ENEMY can bloodcurse you in hellband, instead of in zangband where it's just a small list of uniques

and i just killed like 5 of them at once with a beam spell
>>
>>172290125
Bull rush's range makes her unable to attack you as long as she remains adjacent to your character, which she will be if you have no demons out.
>>
>>172288829
If Zaji is supposed to teach you 'swap out your demons to win fights you scrub,' Madevra is supposed to teach you more advanced stuff about summoning positioning and unsummoning for more reasons than 'oh no 1HP left'

The right positioning lets you kill her with a Faerie, an Ukobach or any other elemental/dark ranged attacker, and pretty much any Light-resistant demon.

If you think she's 2stronk because dogpiling doesn't work, you're playing demon like a MiBe

>>172289789
Isn't that basically every other roguelike
>>
The only non-fetch way of reliably getting through Madevra's defenses is using high shock chance, cannot miss spells. Cannot miss also means something can't be blocked.
>>
>>172290490
Zaji doesn't teach you shit. You can literally "dogpile" him without even thinking and kill him dead.

Madevra on the other hand is tedious as shit to kill without max HP drains or "MiBe" builds. If you have two ranged magic demons and a tanky light resistant early game demon (?) all with low profile good for you my man. What Madevra teaches you is that you can kill everything in demon with any setup if you like watching paint dry or just walk away if you don't.
>>
>>172292213
I find that simply blasting her with strong electricity attacks to be the fastest way to defeat her, even much more so than max HP draining. Even then, you would have to have your PC up to it or an early nabbed kitsune or raiju.
>>
>>172292213
Don't need low profile, you need to pay attention to the range of bullrush and position accordingly.

How do you feel about the Artemis/Actaeon link? Do you hate that too because it's hard to do without Flesh/Souleaters or AoE?

Whatabout Archangel links, since they're similar to Madevra? Do you think they're too hard?

I dunno dude. I just think Madevra is a good change of pace and she made me better at demon by trying to figure out how to kill her without maxHP cheese or electricity.
>>
>>172292803
Actaeon/Artemis link is super easy if you're in hallway. No soul/flesh eater needed.
Archangel links are easy too because by that time you have access to a wide variety of powerful demons and consumables/buffers to prebuff your dudes. Not to mention they don't have bullrush or leap attack or whatever.
Madevra on the other hand, as I said before, is not hard, just tedious if you don't have max HP drains or electricity.

Orb isn't braindead easy, but it can be fun with minimal effort put into your build since copying abilities is extremely cheap allowing you to copy/delete abilities as you want. Ice Ring is a god-tier ability and makes the Actaeon link near trivial due to it's large AoE. What I like about Orb is the variety of magic damage options, allowing you to deal a combination of fire/ice/electric/light/dark damage by tower 5 meaning that all your demons have to do is not die while you blast away at enemy weaknesses with your 125 sp.

hellband Sorcery realm seems really good
ID spell at level 10, and *ID* at 33 in a game where *ID* matters
(actually it matters even more than PCB because you can also *ID* every potion to find out its alchemy recipe. in my game !boldness+!restorestrength = !strength, woo!)
and book 3 has a level 12, 12sp cost dimension door which is just amazing
Especially in hellband which seems to be chock full of melee-only shit just begging to get kited to death. I'm at dlvl 45 and most monsters and uniques I see are still melee-only.
ethereal dragons seem to only cast blind and not have any of the terrifying 350light/dark/confusion breath attacks they have in Zang/PCB
death knights have lost their nether bolt and cause mortal wounds and now only cast summon monster

like 99% of the enemies you can kill just by spamming magic missile (which is still my most sp-efficient damage spell) with the occasional blink/ddoor thrown in
and actually on top of that the game seems to have some kind of PCB yellow-mage system where low-level spells take less than a full turn to cast which just makes magic missile spam even more effective

You can't play it offline unless you mean cutting your internet connection entirely, and who knows if it queues up reports for when you go back online or some shit. The "analytics" is coded into the Unity engine and can't be disabled even by the DEVELOPER. It's not even opt-out, it's automatically forced opt-in forever.

>You can't play it offline unless you mean cutting your internet connection entirely
Do you mean it won't run unless you give it an internet connection? Because blocking individual programs from accessing the internet is entirely possible, especially if the attacker is expecting a certain degree of cooperation from the target machine.
If you suspect that the program is masking its outbound traffic (for instance, by hijacking some other program to send its data), you can catch them at it by just monitoring your outbound traffic.

Keep in mind there are three quality levels of a lot of the medieval weapons: cheap replica, budget steel (worth as much as the real deal, but the stats and description is different) and steel.
The budget steel and steel versions can easily be mixed. Maybe the recipe calls for the high quality one?
>>
>>172337410
Some genius thought having replicas named the same as proper weapons is a good idea - even though you can trivially check the description to tell them apart.

As it often happens in DDA development, voices of reason got overruled by "but muh realism, you don't SEE it from afar" (you do, with V keybind), so now there are multiple items sharing names, but not stats or recipes.

Thanks for the run-down. I hope he can stay level-headed and humble, since the game has fantastic potential, really.

>>
>>172370610
Take one of the offensive powers at level 1 unless you hate yourself. You can always repick with new life later.

The really bad ones are mostly obvious like the stealth one. Also you should probably take crafting for a bit if you are making a melee psion.
>>
>>172370610
you get to re-choose your powers when you drink potion of new life, so don't get too hung up on getting the perfect set early on

off the top of my head:
-psionic speed is really good, up to a +20 bonus from the highest level version
-the detection power is a no-brainer, never skip this
-same for psionic transportation. eventual 0% fail dimension door is ridiculously OP
-clarity is good late but kinda useless early, i wouldn't take it until you're level 40-50 and you're using a !newlife to replace your level 1 damage spell because you have psistorm now
-if you ARE gonna !newlife at level 40, take crafting before you reroll and enchant all your shit for free

Demon whips are strong base weapons but I'm pretty sure if you trained 20 axes t means you already have a decent axe

A demon whip of freezing is decently strong, yeah, although you'll want a weapon with higher than 12(iirc?) base damage for enemies with high AC -- any enemy listed with AC+++ or higher, even AC++ in many cases.

Trog's wrath can be pretty dangerous since he will keep summoning berseked enemies that pretty much surround you, and will do for some time.
If you have any source of invisibility from an item or lots of potions it's pretty easy to avoid.
Same with blinking/teleport scrolls or wand
Or just having enough defense and stats to massacred the enemies he summons.
Still if you aren't sure of it don't do it.
It's futile anyways, if this is one of your first times you will die eventually to a new monster with a gimmick you do'nt know about

Mordecai is a hero, a heroic enemy with 8 abilities. You have 8 turns to kill him while every other link that involves fighting a heroic enemy gives you 10 turns, and none of those links are what I'd call easy.

>awesome now I can die even more efficiently
Yeah those -MORE- prompts when fighting really break the flow. I recommend playing offline first because the interface is just easier to use, same for the game speed being faster/smoother to me at least.

>I'll try. I'm kinda surprised I broke my personal record with the Human and beat Dungeon 15.
I like going Gozag first.
Gozag is amazing really, defeated enemies are turned into gold, and the gold piles have a chance of dazing enemies still alive thus causing them to miss their turns while becoming eligible to higher damage from your attacks.
Also by using your gold you can spawn item shops and it's pretty easy to get very good gear from them.
Later, I abandon Gozag and go Makhleb for dat comfy heal on kills.
If you are still learning about the game then I actually recommend worshipping Makhleb first, because HP on kills is a giant crutch and has amazing synergy with axes, cleaving and tabbing. Mak also lets you summon high tier powerful demons that make cakewalk of Lair and uniques, the chance of them not being hostile is based on the Invocations skill which Hill Orcs are very good at with +3 apt or so, just need to raise it to 10 or so, this means summoned demons will rarely be hostile.

>Is this your name? Isn't it wierd to see yourself die 200 times in a row in a quest where you don't even know why you get the orb?
It's a long line of Daniels.

>>172384930
I fully believe elliptic, but *band freshies always find a way to choke away victory - if it's not wilderness dragons, it's Dragon's Lair dragons. If it's not those, it's a bad summon turn. If it's not that, it's death curses. If it's not that, it's Nodens. To say that there's a class that's truly worry free like a mibe misrepresents how easy PCB would be for crawlpoopers.
>>
>>172386780
Well, part of that is also due to the fact that, with most combos, it's virtually impossible to zero out the chance of getting oneshot in a single turn due to PCB's mechanics, and minimizing the same requires play more excruciating than vanilla.
>>
>>172386780
note that most crawl players are Very Bad At Games, to the point where "you can actually walk away from bad fights instead of just holding tab until your hp hits 0" is actually news to most of them

qw is a bot that literally just otabs but also positions decently, notices tough enemies and uses consumables or runs away, etc

I'd recommend gnome warrior or elf/dwarf warrior; gnomes get intrinsic free action and have +4 AC -2 HD compared to the other two, and all get semicontrolled blinks as they level up.

As for the kablasters, their game revolves around staying alive until they get mana ray (book 3 I think), then killing everything with that spell's deceptively high damage.

Well, considering the game's inherent complexity I'd say it isn't too bad. Although to be fair, most of the UI is kind of a utilitarian placeholder interface, so aesthetics isn't that important.

Generally sell potions of boldness/resist cold. Resist Fire are occasionally useful.
Don't bother with Cure Light Wounds, get serious, critical if possible. Curing can cure hallucination/pretty much anything.

Speed's important. Always have them handy. Berserks are good too if you are melee. Stone Skin is bit overpriced. Giant's Strength is good, if elusive.

Healings and *Healings are important. Early on you should stash them so they don't break.

Potions of Strength/Dexterity/Constitution/Wisdom/Intelligence/Charisma are stat-increasing items, as are Potions of Augmentation and *Enlightenment.

Enlightenment are good to keep around.

Self-Knowledges are good to keep. First one you get, quaff away. If you life rating is 100, start gathering them and New Lifes. New Lifes can reroll your life rating / stat caps, but you should recheck after every time you quaff one.

Don't drink Death, Detonations or Ruination. Or any Tsuyoshi potions. Neo-Tsuyoshis can land some cash, though if sold though.
>>
>>172421845

Probably lead. No joke. That said, 10 liters of volume is a lot: get a meter-stick and set it flat on the ground. Keep that length in mind while you pick up one end of the stick and, keeping the other end where it is, stand the stick straight up. Then set it back on the ground, perpendicular to the original position.

That is a cubic meter: 10 volumetric liters.

Is that dude who wanted to know why is Kevin disliked still here?

Soon there will be a good example of why:
Kevin just reopened a PR that will make it impossible to pick up items under vehicles. He announced he will merge it soon.
And one easy way to get items under vehicles is to just overload a cargo container and have them fall to the floor.

And he is unlikely to fix the cases where it is painful, such as the overflowing cargo (which can happen without warning), so expect to have to move the entire vehicle just to pick up shit that fell out.

This is a very Kevin thing to do: muh realism against all reason and before fixing giant problems that it creates.
And it's not like he doesn't know about those problems. He just doesn't care, because failed attempts at realism are more important.

Thankfully he doesn't actually play the game often enough to realize that there is an exploit that will make the whole thing pointless (the PR only prevents one menu from working properly).

This is an incredibly Kevin thing to do.
>>
>>172438624
Well, "killed with martial arts" implies that it was the martial arts and not his skills that let him pull it off, so the best way to test that would be with a zero in everything that counts.
More likely, though, it was the Black Belt start, which gives you 8 points in dodge, melee and unarmed, and is intended for people who want to play Cataclysm as a beat-em-up arcade game.

Just get a fan of gale to blow dangerous enemies away if they get close, a lamp of fire for some ranged fire damage and Disc of Storms for ultimate aoe damage when surrounded, though you also need rElec and Makleb not to kill yourself while using it

hell no. At least, not in 0.19 or later.

Honestly, a MiBe isn't going to need range (before Extended, anyway). You can Brothers-in-Arms things like orb spiders and entropy weavers to deal with annoying range enemies, and for everything else, you just tab them to death.

Shit, Berserking allows you to close the distance between most enemies, so that's an option, too.

>>172454981
I don't bother checking how much xp something gives on kill; if it benefits me more to kill it than to leave it be I kill it, otherwise I leave it be and hope it doesn't fuck with me later. Generally that means I make an earnest effort to kill the uniques that drop exceptional, make a decent attempt to kill drop good if they don't outclass me, kill drop normal if I can do so without using consumables, and kill the rest if they're trivial or they won't leave me the fuck alone (hounds that aren't lethal e.g. gravity).

For mage and mystic, I'll restate: Go floor by floor and take it easy, just focus on staying alive until you learn Mana Ray, and don't be afraid to skip floors if it helps you avoid a dangerous encounter.

Well there aren't that many boot egos. Might as well keep them unless you find boots of running or a good artifact.

Flying isn't super important, but it lets you ignore water/lava so it's nice in Swamp and especially in Shoals. Flying also reduces the damage you take from Shatter (does anyone cast this other than Jorgrun and random panlords?), but it makes you take 3x damage from Airstrike (so activate the boots to land if you see any titans, spriggan air mages, or Gastronok).
>>
>>172466690
> I think the punishment of Gozag is neglible.
Gozag's punishment can be one of the most dangerous ones because he will berserk/haste enemies at will for some time
I usually worship Gozag then do D10, Lair, D15, Orc, then either Naga/Spider, then switch to Mak and do Elf 1-3 but not the branch end, then Vault 1-4
If you have good enough gear Gozag's wrath is pretty managable through axe cleaving and Mak hp on kills

Edge of the hills SE of Outpost, especially the NE one of the two marked tiles. If you move SW into that tile, you start right near the edge of the higest level hills and can just run back and forth two tiles away from the border (so you have a better chance to flee if a D or such shows up).

Once you get levitate and have a decent chance to kill ancients, you want to move into the hills proper.

I mean, you can do that. I find two south of Zul actually works better for the ancient stage. The tiles I posted seem to lean more heavily towards young and mature d's (surrounding hills aren't quite level 50), plus they're closer to a town so less chance of annoying ambushes on the way there and back, so I like them for early stuff. You're pretty safe unless something older breathes as soon as it shows up.

Yeah that's still fucked up.

Most uniques I see have 7000+ hp
With 433 max sp and my second most mana-efficient spell I can't kill them on one mana bar.
magic missile could do it eventually, since it does 30ish damage for only 1sp

Luckily this game has other brokenly retarded shit
like 12sp 0%fail dimension door
and sp regenerating faster than monster hp

i just ctele across the level, find an empty spot to rest to refill my mana, then ctele back to the unique and resume the fight

I've fought uniques that were supposed to cast "1 time in 1" that only used 1-2 spells the entire fight even though I was killing them in the slowest way possible: magic missile spam.

The biggest danger was back when my best/only offense was magic missile and I was just holding the m1a macro down for 5 minutes to fight every unique, because there was a danger that they'd cast mark of cain or summon something and I'd keep holding the button for a few dozen turns.

Thanks for the recap. Didn't know. I must admit though, I like his approach to realism, even though it sometimes detracts from the game experience.
Ultimately, I think that he doesn't want to make just another roguelike. He wants to make his own thing, which isn't necessarily that bad.
Though granted, some decisions might very well lead to a lot of tedium.
>items falling through vehicles
Ugh. If he can't realize that this will crap things up, though.. If he truly didn't care enough to bugfix it quickly afterwards, I'd be kind of pissed yeah.

However, speaking of realism again: IMO, I'd love for it to aim for realism. This will lead to very unorthodox-feeling changed in one's gameplay style, but ultimately it'll feel immersive and gritty, which I love.
That being said, the more realistic a game like this is, the more firearms (and other high-tech weapons) will kick ass compared to other things). ..and furthermore: Robotic enemies will end up more dangerous and overpowered than anything else. (Which would be kind of exhilarating---the "enemy you [almost] can't beat" kind of thing.)

good spells they should still have access to:
-ddoor, recall, and telelevel in trump 2
-destruction and teleother in chaos 2
-healing and glyph in life 2

plus solid utility like
-nature awareness and stonetomud in nature 2
-telepathy, teleport, teleport other, and phase door in trump 1
-haste, mapping, detection, and teleother in sorc 2 (although sorcery detection spell is pretty overpriced compared to nature IIRC)

there's a lot of books that are potentially worth keeping around, although of course there's a lot of overlap and you wouldn't want all at once

I used a lot of different books when I was playing sorc, but red mage's gigantic penalties to fail rates and min levels probably makes all this shit a lot less useful in earlygame and only decent much later on

Too bad that we don't have an above floor yet.
Still, that only makes a cathedral even better in terms of permanent base: these little squares are completely impregnable to anything even from PK's mod, except for jabberwocks but they can smash through solid rock because of their retard strength.

>Robotic enemies will end up more dangerous and overpowered than anything else.
You know, the vehicle system wouldn't be too bad a basis for multitile robots. The only major problem is enemy AI. Making a car move around sensibly is hard enough in floating-point coordinates, and we're talking a tile environment with one-wide pathways and a player actively trying to exploit even the tiniest flaw. You wouldn't need the robot to have robust problem-solving skills to recreate the Ghost in the Shell tank fight, but they would at least need to be able to move around on open ground, and apparently multitile pathfinding is a massive issue.
