How's the 64 bits version?
It's the same game.
Performance improvements for specific bottlenecks that were limited by memory. Worldgen doesn't crash anymore. Other issues were obviously not touched.

>>171702416
Apparently you were limited by a specific bottleneck that was related to memory.
I would be cautious to compare performance on different embarks, by the way. Especially if it's in different worlds.
Now, a direct comparison of the same 16x16 embark spot in the same world would be more interesting. Even better, a 100 different embark spots each with 32bit 43.05 and 64bit 43.05, all of them at the beginning and after 5 to 10 years with a specific number of creatures and items.
>>
>>171702416
>>171702736
DF perfs actually mostly depends on the L1 memory cache (strong CPU cores = more FPS because generaly there is a corellation wih that and a strong L1 memory cache, especially with Intel cpus and that's the opposite with AMD)
>>
>>171697340
It's still theoretically possible for goblins to jump the ledges, but three tile gaps should be fine.
Jump distance depends on creature speed. I think you can jump something like four or five tiles at full sprint. Creatures in fort mode don't try to do that until they enter combat, though, and it takes a while to accelerate, so they'll never be trying to jump through your deathtrap at full sprint. At normal walking speed or less, they can only clear one-tile gaps, so anything more than that will work most of the time.
You should also smooth all the walls to stop creatures from climbing them. Climbing probably won't help them infiltrate your fort, because of how slow it is, but locating and shooting all the stragglers clinging to the walls sounds annoying.

I found the world-gen tests pretty informative, they start out with little difference, both quick, then 32 bit starts to fall behind more and more, and that just keeps going until you reach the point where 32 bit crashes due to memory but 64 bit can keep on trucking, slowly or not.

>>
>>171705690
That and RAM latency (there is a bottleneck if you really don't have enough RAM but you need FAST RAM)
I think benchmarks have some importance (and benchmarks are what matters instead of clock speed)
The game basically works by loading a whole save from the hard drive to the RAM (and from the RAM to the hard drive when you save) and the CPU is accessing it all the time in-game.
The reason why perfs sharpilly increase in a lot of people when the embark is below a certain size is because the L3 memory cache is able to load it instead of it being in the RAM, reducing problems with high RAM latency and latency between the RAM and the CPU because of the architecture of the CPU. (Intel has a good architecture for DF)

I think the gait system introduced in 0.40 fucked falling damage. I remember that two level drops were enough to hurt you in 0.34, but now you need to fall three levels or more, and the damage itself tends to be lesser.

still, I've gotten quite a few "blows apart" since 0.40. last one was a glass FB I pushed down the central rampcase of a worldgen fort.

I was using the rider version of launch (previously it let you grab someone and launch them, I think it's more fun to have it do the trick where you wind up riding them through the air like Zangief) in a very tall world aimed all the way up at the sky/the bottom edge of the screen, and the further the cursor is from you the faster you go, but the rider doesn't take the damage from this (normally I would be the one blowing apart/bouncing off the skybox) so it's just a matter of weeeeee, SPLOOSH, dead mount+safe rider.

How many people know df as "that furfag ponyfucker pieces of shit game" again?

People know they should be embarrassed of furryponyfuckerfaggotry, but being embarrassed of having a dick or pussy is fucked up.

Not wanting every story to focus on "OMG COCKS AND CUNTS" is understandable, when Toady puts ponyfuckerfaggotry into the game lemme know. Animal people as a trope were around long before every mention of them got permanently tainted with furfaggotry, but I haven't even thought twice about it since I genocided them right the fuck out of my mod completely.

If you want dicks and cunts in the game, learn how to mod and put them in, if you want a general "crotch" bodypart you can target for gelding/pain/etc, mod it in.

I can't tell you how much easier Relicwebs would've been to dig with something like that. Years after having finished shaving the front of the cliff down I'm still digging away the "scaffolds" I used to access it. Not to mention the fact that, when removing a construction or building (bridge or grate) that spans a gap, its component objects will randomly decide which side of the gap to land on. Or that dwarves will deconstruct a stair from below but not from above (they stand on it to deconstruct if they can't access it from below or horizontally).

Put one of these over on another monitor or something for the first little bit until you just start being able to correctly guess what something is, but always keep the wiki handy.

I know the structures of the game in and out, upside down, and backwards. I've written numerous scripts ranging from minor shit like setting stuff on fire to completely whipping up and inserting a fake artifact with proper historical event/figure/etc links.

Done mods which wound up being more or less complete overhauls, and gotten where I can glance through an errorlog and know exactly what I fucked up or missed, in which file, down to the lines I need to fix.

I still keep the wiki handy, in particular the modding > tokens pages because there are still lots of tokens I just haven't actually had a reason or chance to fuck with yet and never know when I might need one or come up with something after seeing one.

That would be the difference between just tossing money at a problem, and actually working to solve it. If you just have a huge pile of money, and no idea how to use it, all you're going to accomplish is losing a huge pile of money.
You can of course hire skilled project managers, but if you aren't one yourself, you might have difficulty finding one. That's one of the things you need a skilled project manager for. And to some people, it never seems to occur that they need one until it's too late. It's really apparent with some dead crowdfunding projects that the reason they failed is that the guy receiving all the money just had no clue what he was supposed to do with it.

In this case specifically, Toady One has zero experience wrangling a team of coders, and is probably the worst possible person to head a commercial project to remake Dwarf Fortress. It's been, what, ten years since he last even had a formal job. You'd have better luck giving money to the Rimworld guys.

>>171774950
Brook tiles, the ones underground, are basically solid walls that let water through. It'll be fine.
If you ever find yourself needing to secure a proper river or something similar, you should use fortifications. Unlike grates and bars, they're terrain rather than furniture, meaning that building destroyers can't smash them and they won't break if the water freezes. If the water doesn't freeze, it'll also be tricky to get them built in the first place. You'll likely need to do something huge like dig a huge drain leading to the caverns under the river, and pierce the river floor from below. Either that or pump magma all the way to the surface.

>Money is a proxy for time and resources
That assumes that you're the investor.

Toady isn't the investor. He's the guy getting the job done. From the perspective of an investor, you can't really tell Toady exactly what he can and cannot do.

It's also worth mentioning that Toady doesn't run Bay12 as a business. He simply makes a game he thinks is cool, and gladly accept any donations other choose to give him while doing so.

I don't really have any good way to put it, but basically, I think you should stop trying to sneak that neo-liberal yuppie attitude into a project that essentially is one man's vision. Toady's goal isn't to generate wealth, and as much of a sin that must be in a neo-liberal's eyes, that's probably best for the development of DF.

It doesn't. That is literally the sole function of any currency. Until it's exchanged for a product or service it's just a piece of paper or disk of metal or a few bits on a server with no intrinsic value. Every unit of any currency is representative of real value, whether through a piece of property or through an individual's labor.

I'm not arguing that Toady can or should outsource DF, I was simply disagreeing with the sentiment of the post I replied to.
Although is hard to argue against the proposition that with an arbitrarily large amount of money DF 1.0 could be achieved in an arbitrarily small amount of time. Countering that it wouldn't work because Toady isn't a project manager is just arguing the premise rather than rebutting the conclusion.

Toady is trying to do something which doesn't just fit "grab the unity engine, slap these art resources in there, pull some code out of the bin, pick some profitable series to call it a sequel for and shit it out onto steam" type of game development.

Throwing arbitrary amounts of cash will get you lots of DF!Clone 1.0 iterations, but much as you can't just tell your mooding weaponsmith with a thing for axes to put down that adamantine wafer and start making giant axe blades for a quick result and profit, trying to throw money at Toady is just going to make him go insane AND prevent you from getting the artifact!

Could be even somewhat educational with well researched mining techniques, engineering and shit.

There was a post a few threads ago about a plot for a df series. It went with the mining colony idea, with each season/episode having different problems, scaling in difficulty with fort progression. For example, dangerous animals and werebeasts for the first few episodes, and the subsequent infections, followed by goblin and kobold raids, followed by the dangers of the underground caverns, followed by a full on war with goblins, until finally the fort is completely eradicated once the dwarves dig to hell and unleash the evil within.

You could create some cool characters (many who die along the way) and have some neat political and economics strife, along with cool information about geology and colony management. Even throw in the classic twist of a vampire monarch claiming the place, only to be rebelled against and eventually destroyed, along with his loyalist thralls.

I'd watch that shit to death.
>>
>>171783528
That's arguing against the premise again. I mean, you're not wrong about what Toady IS doing, but the point is about what Toady could do given both the ideal circumstances and the inclination to use them.
Or, put more simply, if my argument is "If A then B", countering with "But A is impossible" doesn't address the argument.
It's a moot point anyway, as Toady doesn't have access to an arbitrarily large amount of money, and probably wouldn't use a team develop DF if he did.

There is a few people from Bay12forum saying that Perfect World generates map with much less z-levels than normal df maps.
Is it true? from what I understand the number of z-levels is not changed by Perfect World and is still the same as the basic advanced profil you have based the map on. (unless you modify it)
So, have they selected INSERTSIZE_ISLAND instead of REGION or there is really a quirk about that with Perfect World?

why wouldn't it? It's just toady with 10 bodies and increased multitasking and brain power, he could work on 5 features at the same time with god tier synchronicity, 24h per day, since he could have 5 working while 5 are sleeping

>I was simply disagreeing with the sentiment of the post I replied to.
I guess I read that post differently. I took "tossing money at [problems]" to mean a particular style of problem solving, the kind where you just allocate resources to the problem and assume it'll go away. Which misses the whole point of what problems are. If you're faced with a problem, then you're also dealing with limited resources, almost by definition. If you have an arbitrary amount of money to spend, then you've ALREADY WON and have no need to worry about such petty things as pushing Dwarf Fortress to version one. If you want it to happen, it'll happen.

But, yeah. Depends on whether you take "solving problems by tossing money at them" as a literal statement that you need resources to do things, or as a figure of speech implying that the person spending the money is an idiot.

The way those columns shimmy is strangely erotic.
>>
>>171785732

I don't have the math behind it, but a bunch of anons decreed that the cost/benefit wasn't very effective, seeing as each toady would require their own food, clothes, hygiene, and medical bills in order to remain healthy and thus capable of working on df at a steady pace. As of now, Toady is living a comfortable life, but with the added strain of 9 extra mouths, not to mention the added requirements of 9 extra cats (as surrogate Scamps in order to keep each Toady sane), would render the Toad unable to continue to afford his current lifestyle.

.+.+

where . is open space and + is floor and X is up/down stairs. if I place a screw pump over the first + and second ., and turn the stack on at the bottom, where will the magma go? How can I make it go up into the chamber without fucking everything up?

So the season just changed, and with it military shifts changed as well. I was idly scanning through some dwarves, to see if any important work had been abandoned by dwarves going on duty, when I find this guy sitting in the library pondering reproductive behavior. Not an incredibly uncommon thing in my fort, especially for my militia who do some light scholaring on the side. They like to think about fucking. But this guy has some spatters of contaminant in his inventory. And their name is too long for me to see what they are.
So I think I just caught one of my axelords jerking it. Or at least that's how I'm headcanoning it.

So I started an adventure for the 1st time in years and I was sleeping in some lords house when a maceman walks in and slams his head in. After fighting the dude i got him to tell me he works for some "boss" called Racon Allysides in some town. Naturally i followed up to the town and everyone here is telling me about this dude terrorizing there town and when I ask for directions they tell me he is in the town itself. I found 2 more bandits that i murdered just standing around in the streets but i still cant find this fucking guy.

does anyone have any experience in this kind of quest? is he hiding amount the villagers? does he have a safe house some place? is he just not in the town?
>>

I don't know if they're already represented and I just didn't catch it. Max and Frown/Comfy. Mountainanon and Myne if you want to add some megaforters. Not sure how you could draw any of them in this format, though.
>>
>>171801563
Possibly in the tunnels/sewers/catacombs under town. Next time you see a bandit try asking about the one you're looking for. They might give you a general direction to search.
>>
>>171802229
Frown was in the first one, would have to check and see if there was an @ tucked in somewhere in one that would be Max.

Mountainanon: have a computer sitting there with a dwarf falling past it.

Myne: everything has to be super duper fucking symmetrical and geometrical as shit.

Is this a hamlet or a city? If the latter, then they're probably hiding beneath the city keep, a temple or in the sewers. If it's a hamlet I hope you enjoy talking to literally everybody there!
>>
>>171801563
Usually they hide out in the sewers, or the dungeons under the castle, or the catacombs under temples. It can be had to find them because the underground areas are huge and it can very laggy due to there being a whole city of people loaded above you.

There's almost the opposite going on. Children born in the fort are the laziest, weakest sacks of shit on the planet, regardless of whether their parents were these rippling slabs of muscle and lard.

It works for cosmetic traits, but all fortborn dwarfs are universally weak. So if you want to breed a race of pure, blonde-haired blue-eyed aryan dorfs it's possible. But if you want them to not be nancies then you're shit out of luck.

I think Toady might have fixed it, I know there was an old binary patch that helped.
But it used to be that anything born in the fortress could only reach 10% of it's expected mass.

Anything.
So imagine little mini-cows and little mini-dwarfs running around. Mini-cats and mini-rocs. Again, not sure how fixed it is. That might still be the way things work.

Now you brag about it. You can inform people about things you've done via "bring up incident or rumor".
Or, if you want to be more dramatic about it, you can tell a story, with k - begin performance. People will gather around you, and comment on how shit you are at telling stories. It's difficult to actually find anything in the storytelling topics, but if you can figure out the name of the region where the camp was (it might be on the Q map), you can list all the possible events you know in that region, including killing that guy.
This will improve your reputation among your audience. For certain values of "improve", anyway. You can check their opinion on you with "ask about a specific person".

All of this ultimately accomplishes nothing. There's no actual goal in adventure mode, and it's even more apparent than in fort mode.

There's really no point. You're better off just sniffing out a vampire, getting bit/drinking his blood, then biting all your party members when you turn.

Adventure Mode has no balance at this point, so attempting to treat it like a traditional RPG is pretty unrewarding.

I've played it extensively and the difficulty curve basically goes from "death by squirrels" to "godmode" with almost no in between.

The real fun comes from generating worlds with extensive history, getting Legends Viewer, fucking with shit, progressing time and seeing what happens.

On that note, is there any way to modify the time that passes between plays? It's like two weeks or something. Would be cool to change it to a couple years and seeing the impact your adventurer makes.

The whole part about marble being there for you is because marble, being a stone that comprises metamorphic layers, can be found in nearly any embark if you dig enough. It's the most dependable flux, and is therefore totally the raddest of dawgs.

Any D&D players here? Because i've been reading Toady's interview about newest update (http://www.pcgamer.com/dwarf-fortress-creator-tarn-adams-talks-about-simulating-the-most-complex-magic-system-ever/), and he said:
>There's a whole class of Dwarf Fortress players who don't play either of the traditional game modes. They just do archaeology on the worlds they've generated. And there's a small cluster who do cartography or set up their D&D game universes based on worlds as inspiration. So having these items, now, that jumps the inspiration level by connecting with everything, you get this level of complexity you didn't have before.
So, my question is, has anybody here ever adapted world from Dwarf Fortress into their scenario? How was it? Was adapting creatures into the D&D mechanics hard? Whats your opinion on this?

i disagree some what about the balance. i just wish there was better ways to train your skills, i would really like it if i could get into a fist fight in a tavern without everyone going ape shit. the night creature arc was my favorite, like 6 normal dudes around every hamlet you can find in their holes during the day to fist fight

Dude the world generator alone is potentially an extremely valuable tool for any kind of fantasy writer. The ability to simulate a fairly realistic geography including stuff like biomes and rain shadows and volcanism is top fuckin' notch. Instead of having to do hours and hours of research and guesswork you can just generate a few worlds in PW and modify the result till you get what you want.

You can never know, sediment and iron ores are exceedingly rare in these new versions. And adding insult to injury, most times you won't find iron ore in flux stone.

I usually try to find a tile with shallow metals, deep metals and flux stone by the side of a mountain. There's about a 1 on 3 chance of getting iron ore and flux.

Just started playing vanilla 0.43.05 after a long absence from DF and I also had goblin sieges at a population of 40 dwarves, plus a few extra babies and handful of mercs. (The wiki says goblin ambushes were removed in v0.42.04 and that 80 dorfs should be the minimum). No more than 50 permanent residents total. There are about dozen bards and the like visiting the fort at any time if than can affect the siege condition, but even with those added in there aren't anywhere near 80 people around.

The first siege was in year 2, next one in year 3. The normal "A vile force of darkness has arrived!" message appears pausing the game, there's the SIEGE text in the window, and the besieging forces have consisted of around 10 goblins with ranged weapons, plus a single goblin snatcher both times.

Liberal used to mean more rights and freedoms to private capital owners and citizens instead of the nobles/monarchs/theocrats, etc.Today this meaning has given way to a new meaning, although this definition of liberalism is still used in the context of Marxism and libertarianism. Marxists often refer to "bourgeois liberalism" as the ideology/outlook of the capitalist class and the Enlightenment philosophers and revolutionaries of the 18th century. Libertarians are basically what "liberals" used to mean. Libertarians often refer to themselves as "classical liberals".

But outside of those circles/contexts the word "liberals" has a different meaning. To most people who describe themselves as liberals, it means people who are supposedly tolerant and believe in social welfare, protecting the environment, etc. It's kind of vacuous but then most of mainstream politics is.

Neoliberalism on the other hand is a word that describes the policies undertaken by the festering abominations we call (ie. the mainstream media calls) "democratic governments". In other words, going to war and killing millions of people because of "human rights" (eg. Syria, Libya, etc.), and suppressing the rights of citizens because of "safety". It's basically imperialism with a moralistic veneer.

Nothing has changed about the geological aspect of DF's mapgen since the z-axis was added. Iron and sedimentary layers are as common as they've ever been. If you are, as you suggest, usually embarking on or near mountains then that's why you're not finding them. Sedimentary layers are overwhelmingly more prevalent at lower elevations.

meph just took all existing mods, connected them within his own DF booting UI, slapped his name on it and now takes donation money from it.

due to the popularity of mastershit, almost all modding activities outside of it have died out.

to make things worse, meph has now also combined the tilesets of three other forumites into his own "Meph tileset". as usual, he claims all credit for other peoples' work.

>Is it impossible for people to just answer a fucking question anymore?
It's a difficult enough question that most people will rather just call you a faggot than make the effort. Hatred is rarely the result of a rational thought process. People hate things for reasons, of course, but they're not the kind of reasons you're consciously aware of until you really make an effort to dig them out. And when you do, half the time it's something really petty that you don't necessarily want to admit to a stranger on the internet. Like, maybe one of the earlier versions of the mod, from 2008 or something, used to have a metal alloy that didn't fit the theme of the metal alloys in vanilla Dwarf Fortress, and you have associated the whole modding scene with nonsensical bullshit ever since. Maybe it's just peer pressure. Maybe you really do hate a mod because its author travelled to Lebanon and got mugged.

Except you already know that, of course. It's why you asked. You're not really curious about why people hate Masterwork, you just want people to examine their reasons, in hopes they'll stop hating it, because you can't emotionally deal with liking something other people don't. You don't have the strength to just accept that there are people on 4chan who like different things than you. Which wouldn't be a problem, if you could come to terms with your desire to have your opinions validated by others, but you can't do that either. You want to fit in, but don't want to TRY to fit in, because you're already committed to the idea that your own tastes are superior and everyone else is wrong. You don't want to be like other people, you want everyone else to be like you.

Either that or you are Meph, and the people who use your mod literally give you money.

>>
Guise, I need an assessment of how hard I fucked up.
I am at the end of the first autumn and apart from a group of untrained dogs at my fortress entrance I've got no defense mechanisms to speak of. I've got 3 somewhat capable melee fighters and 3 archers, none of them wearing their gear at this moment. Most of the gear is quite far away from my soldiers and it is absolutely not enough to equip them all fully with metal.
>Weremoose shows up
Am I fucked? (As in: Is it impossible to kill it without getting bitten?)
Also: All my archers are currently hunting: I read somewhere on the wiki, that this means they can't use their bows. If disable the hunting labor and tell them to attack the weremoose, will they be able to use their (cross)bows?
One of my axe dwarfs is pretty much right next to the moose. If I put him out of the squad and raise a civilian alert, will he be able to outrun that canadian?

>>
>>171864395
you're best off actually attacking the moose.

keep track of the combat logs, though. if you see someone get bitten by a bite that breaks the skin, give them a special profession nickname that you can remember. after the battle is over, you quarantine anyone who got bitten and wait for a month.
>>
>>171864395
Only bites that pierce the skin are a problem, and weremoose sounds like something that would mostly use it's horns.

You might lose a couple dorfs, but you'll be fine in the long run.
>>
>>171864395

But try and stop him before he leaves so you can keep him as a pet or something.

>>171865197
My first werecreature was a weretortoise and it just hid in its shell after my dwarves started whacking it. He got away before I could actually get him.

Second one was a wererhino and it fucked shit up pretty hardcore, so it's real hit and miss when they're actually dangerous.
>>
>>171865561
well, just be careful, seeing that moose is a big animal it could be very dangerous
>>
>>171865197
don't exaggarate things.

assuming your squad has decent gear and skills, even one of them might be enough to bring it down.

also, if it could reach 6 dwarves before your squad even got there, then I wonder how the fuck you planned your fort.

why would you have six or more dwarves, working above ground near the embark border, WITHOUT having your squad train in an area where they could reach them quickly?

>>171865410
>Just wait a little while and he'll turn back into a human and run away.
Well, as I said: I've got almost no defenses. Will the moose stop to try and fight those doggos?
>>171865821
>just be careful, seeing that moose is a big animal it could be very dangerous
I'll try my best...

Does someone know if my archers will be able to use the crossbows they've got equipped?
>>
>>171864395
Nothing you do will get your archers to attack the weremoose with the crossbows and ammo they're currently holding. The only way it will happen is if the weremoose wanders into their LoS while they're still hunters and not on duty. Best just leave them alone, and in the future don't enlist hunters, or don't use hunters at all.
Your axedwarf will probably attack the weremoose no matter what you do. So will any nearby civilians. Since a mid-.40 morale tweak, all dwarves, even the cowardly ones, are foolhardily brave and will attack any hostile creatures they can reach, even if it would be certain suicide. This has made werebeasts a lot more dangerous than they would be otherwise. You could set a civ alert burrow and remove him from the squad, but if the weremoose can see him he's likely to run him down anyway. So you should probably let the dwarf keep his axe.

See above.
>>
>>171867282
you really should call all your dwarves back inside if you can, and tell someone to wall off the room they're inside and wait
>>
>>171867282
If you've enlisted him and you had an axe laying around he would've picked it up, assuming you assigned your squad one of the default uniforms. You can check with v i. This also applies to any available armor pieces that don't conflict with civilian clothes.
>>
>>171867750
Oh shit didn't think of that! You are right, he actually has a full iron equip (cap, chain mail and leggins) but only a copper battle axe.
>>171867640
Well that's an option too. The wiki page on doors suggest that forbidding passage will already bee enough to lock the moose out.

I guess what I'll do is rallying my melee dworfs with the dogs while I get all the other ones in the main hall and shut the doors. If there is enough time left I'll get the axedwarfs and dogs in there too.
But first I'm gonna read up on some combat mechanics.
Thanks everyone.
>>
>>171869080
the axedwarf should have a decent chance against the beast, but it may still bite him in the hands or feet. it definitely won't kill him though

Ok a quick intermediate report:
The fisher axe dwarf got absolutely BTFOd by the moose. Before my militia commander and the second axe dwarf even came close to the scene the fisher was already proclaimed dead by the game. This was probably because 1. She was only a "competent" axe dwarf and 2. I made her move away from the moose because I thought she might outrun it. She got a few good hits on it though.
Now the militia commander (mace dwarf with mostly steel equip) seems to be a natural talent at dancing with moose. Whenever the moose attacks he just doges it and lands another hit with the steel mace. The other axe dwarf however gets beaten up quite badly and already lost a hand. But she aswell slices the moose up quite good.
But some civs think it's a good Idea to help so I'll activate the civilian alert after all. I don't understand the menu tho to be honest. Do the squads marked with the A run into the burrow aswell or do they stay in the fight?

Okay.

So I carved out a 10z drop and left a pillar in the center with a support on top. If I recall correctly during collapses it doesnt fall as one Item but rather the materials that make it up.

On the left I had 1x1 staircase and 1x1 open. For this test I dug a 1x1 every 2z levels.

After dropping the "water block" It did actually seems to properly use fluid dynamics.

A 10z drop of 4z worth of 6x6 fluid gave me muddy loam 12 z levels up from where the cistern fell.

11 of my dwarfs are dead, but the moose aswell. I'm gonna scrap that fort obviously. I don't even want to start looking at who was bitten and who wasn't. Constructed walls drop the materials unless connection is severed in one chunk, natural stone walls (or ice walls as I used for my no-dfhack sub-magma constructions) fall as a solid block and end up sitting where they land (unless they melt) with the liquids displaced on top of them.

Dropping one through a gap which it is tall enough to fill:

[] < \
[] <-- solid block
[] < /
.. <- gap
~ < \
~ <-- magma or water

Should give:

~ <-- magma or water
~ < /
.. <-- open space
[]
[]
[]

Though I can't recall exactly if it worked as well as I hoped because I don't remember how tall I made the block/gap.
