So I'm getting back after a long hiatus, doing the usual raw modding. The purpose here is to make fighting elves more fun and increase the number and threat of goblins all around.

Doubled goblin max civ population, gave them and elves some natural skills (some to kobolds and trolls too) and doubled the population of trolls and ogres so I get more fun.

Anything I'm missing? How do I make creatures stop with the whole gender/gay fuckery and make them just normal again? I forgot what I need to change to what.

Pic related is the elf shit, still considering going through the effort of making some magic wood comparable to iron.
>>
>>171518616
I'm fiddling with an idea to use reactions to make gear out of the superior wood and removing the wood armor/weapons tokens actually, reminded me I need to figure that out since I've mostly got the improved creature types/interactions figured out.

Though, what exactly is required for a secret to produce towers, I could swear there was a way without making zombies but can't figure out what exactly was needed.

You can make everyone straight marrying types again through the ORIENTATION tag, but you'd have to check the wiki for the arguments. They'll still get married and have kids less often though, because of the way socialization has been changed over the years dwarves don't interact with each other as much as they used to even given the same amount of down time. You've practically got to lock them in a room together 80% of the time. It's a wonder they don't go extinct.

I know this too well. In 2 or so years in a given fort after setting up a 'communal dormitory' of assigned bedrooms I had at least one observed incidence of two star-crossed denizens catching up with a new romance. Undoubtedly despite the discrepancy of the chance of loving and being loved back vs leading up to marriage according to the orientation percentages, just making it to lover guarantees Marriage later on. This result is only for a shotgun method of accumulating enough encounters between all the members to facilitate an artificial relationship. Perhaps this is rather counter-intuitive since two bed quarters are a better shot since it's more focused on two dwarfs at the same time, but I digress and it beats maintaining the many socializing meeting areas (temple/inn/library) which are far less encounter inducing. Ironic given the reason for the socialize reaction's debut.
>>
>>171526468
I've tried the two dwarves per bedroom method, but it's not really all that excellent. You have to very carefully select both candidates and then leave them in there for a year or more. Even careful vetting doesn't always produce results, or I'm just bad at matching. It seems more effective to just let dwarves mingle naturally, and I feel less like Big Brother, but the rates still aren't good.

Still hoping I can get it working better, basically started off with the ksbd stuff then got stumped on some things that'll really need the artifacts if not myth release, started fiddling with a dfaboo idea that morphed into a weird eurasia type thing, figured out some neat tricks and went back to my old conglomerate mod with the new stuff I learned like using creature variations instead of having a fuckton of caste definitions and outlandish methods to control when they show up.

Atm I'm fucking with viking/valkyrie superdwarves, knight/crusader superhumans, and I got stumped on the elves but already had them as ninja/kunoichi in the dfaboo idea so I am working with that assuming I don't get a better way to represent like, assassins/spies or something.

Still not sure where to go with gobs, but I do have the superdwarves hurling around (bright red clouds of) berserker powder that makes other dwarves flip their shit and get stronger/faster/etc, and superhumans emanating an aura of (candy cyan) holy fire that makes other humans tougher/stronger/braver, while the superelves have the smokebomb > haha you can't move and I'm at spd 10.0 shit going on.

That's the ticket isn't it? Trying to select the people for their personality that is, and making guesses as to what makes a good match of lovers. Pondering this question I believe requires a thorough look into the soul and schema segment, since personality is definitely relevant to relationships and foolish to dismiss as a nonfactor. Having said that, I'll admit that I would give Toady the benefit of the doubt when assuming that two maxims arise: opposites attract while simultaneously birds of a feather flock together.
In the picture depicts the relationship of an established couple and of two lovers; the Leftmost exhibits two facets of their traits being shared while the rightside share one trait and exhibit two polar opposites of a trait. I haven't factored in any other traits that complement or destructively interfere each other, and this conjecture and my analysis may end up being nonexistent mechanics altogether, yet I can't help but notice it. I'll give credit where it's due and that means despite my digression, the relationship system we have now is safely benign enough not to interfere with the current state of affairs too much yet still leave room for further improvement as intended by his comment on the addition of the soul.

I don't know who keeps wanting to make the OP say that the Starter Pack and DT are in some kind of half-beta, but the reason that it isn't changed on the pasta is because they're buggy as shit. DT in particular is really only worth being used to test for bugs right now. In my experience, anyways.

There's nothing more boring than sealing yourself off and "winning" every siege by hiding behind a drawbridge.

well, in any way I wouldn't be too sad in losing this fortress, seeing that it has some design flaws, and I don't know shit about the game yet

>We were thinking of having, say you have a more standard world with a regular old afterlife, and you were playing adventure mode, and then when you died it doesn't just say quit and start again. You're actually sitting in the Elysian fields all of a sudden, and you can move around, and you're like, what just happened?

>'Ohhh, damnit.' It wouldn't be a long game, because it would probably be boring, but you could chat with some godlike figures and decide if you wanted to go into the pool and reincarnate or go do something, or if you just want to retire and hang out and be dead. And when your other characters die they can talk with you about how you both died stupidly.

>>
>>171549887
If you don't know, you probably need to.

Also, check the inventories of your guys. If they're uneuipped, then you definitely need more weapons and armour. Weapons and shields go first. If you have to choose between ashield and another piece of armour, always go for the shield. Since joint damage was introduced, blocking damage with a shield (or parrying with a weapon) is the only safe way to null all incoming hits.

Following this kind of chart when starting a new game seems like a perfect way to turn DF into a chore, where you need to check off boxes instead of actually playing.

It's the same as with tutorials on youtube. They force you to do things in the same order as they do.

Everyone has different playstyles, and most of these playstyles are fully functional for playing DF.

Archer+weapon skill are the two most important skills.

For I'm not sure. Spatial and kinesthetic sense sound like they should be important, but the experiments that other anon made showed that they only made a marginal difference.

I recommend that all combat-based characters put their points into agility and intuition. The latter of these proved to have a big impact on combat efficiency.

I'm thinking of adding orcs as human-sized but stronger foes, but I want them on the same civ as gobbos. Any modders have any tips to do that?

Probably old age. The "dying of old age" checks seem take place during season changes.

I know this because I once modded antmen to be a playable civ, and they have really low life expectancy. After a few years, I got a page of deaths each time the season changed.

Yeah that's what I've been doing
Starting carpenter gets woodcutting enabled, chops down a handful of trees for 7 beds, table and a chair, miners go ham on the stone, and before 1st wave is here I have enough shit to accomodate 60 dorfs minimum, along with workshop rooms and storage places for everything I'll ever need.

Restriction is the mother of creativity, and nature it's most proficient artist

Dig to the caverns and dig inside the rocky columns, rooms tightly hugging the border between the dry civilization of your fort and the humid darkness of the underground.
Use any veins and patches you find and mine out as the basis for corridors and rooms.
Throw caution and efficiency to the wind, do not impose your alien molds to the ancient stone, just go with the ebb and flow that forged it.

Also, drugs. If you feel like using fancy words, then it's working

4 tiles away from the shop? Because dwarves don't determine a path from the shop's location, they determine a path from their own location which is usually not close to the shop when they pick up the task.
Try setting the stockpile to give to the shop, that way the dwarves will only take from that stockpile when using that shop.

There's even more bugs with other stockpiles like ammo and shit.

With minecarts it's nice and clean the only thing I have to deal with are the stones getting stuck in wheelbarrows.
Another upside is that there's little wasted space and that means fewer tiles to use for pathfinding so more FPS!
Though the only downside is that the fucking dwarfs won't ever stop hauling as long as the items that want to be in the stockpile exist outside of it.

Oh what fun it was getting dwarfs killed by bad channeling, digging into the caverns only for a GCS to kill all the dwarfs. Dwarfs dying from there being no food. Flooding the fort, freezing dwarfs to death. Digging that blue metal ore way too greedily only to be overrun by clowns. Fighting clowns only for dwarfs to drop their armor to try and pick up the better armor that their dead friends dropped.

I've got a piece of shit acer aspire netbook. It's pretty weak but it does what I want and the battery lasts like 6 hours.

And it runs DF. I make sure to generate small or pocket worlds, with short histories and then embark on a 2x1 or if I'm feeling really daring a 2x2 area.

Aesthetics have to go out the window, unless you consider a super symmetrical tightly packed fort spread over like 20 z-levels aesthetic.

I guess it lets you compartmentalize the different industries in your head since they're all on different floors. Comfy netbook DF is pretty good, but you have to be patient.

There's Modest Mod Accelerated for a previous version of DF. Can't remember how far back you have to go though.

Basically gets rid of a shitload of things in the game to increase fps. An example would be that wood is now just wood. No tower caps, no ash logs, just wood.

I don't know, but your dwarves will need to get to them to harvest that Goblinite, and dwarves can't go in water deeper than 4/7 without Swimming. So if there's going to be water, make it so that you can pump it out.
>>

If you want the ballistas to have constant uptime, yeah. You can make it smaller if you don't mind the ballistas going cold as the gobs approach them.

Huge noob to fortress mode, only ever played adventure before. I started a new game today, and realized that things were too complicated so I wanted to just see what it would take for all my dwarfs to die so I could start over. They've survived for about 2 years of ingame time so far literally just standing in a field with no food or water. The only ones that died were the ones I went out of my way to lock in the fort by making double thick walls in front of the entrance with no other way out. Is this just a problem with the world I created? I'm going out of my way to kill them and more migrants just keep showing up even though they're just standing in one spot not doing anything

That explains things, all I've heard is how easy it is to die in Fortress mode and then when I'm actively trying to kill them to see what not to do on my next one they live forever. I just locked them all in a log cabin so I'll see how long it takes for them to die. Oddly enough the animals that were left in the fortress are still fine despite being in there over a year while the 3 dwarfs are just corpses.

>>
>>171647587

>>
>>171647668

>>
>>171641356
What you got there is your typical fantasy sword that can cut anything and never dulls.
You just need some enemies to fight.
>>
>>171643628
Things like sieging armies are partially based on how much wealth your site has produced, so letting your dwarves live outside with zero industry can often make you last longer. They're drinking nasty pond water and eating rats, but that's not going to kill them.

Just abandon the fort. If your next fort is from the same civ, you can get some of your old dwarves as migrants.
>>
>>171647941
>sieging armies are partially based on how much wealth your site has produced
I'm gonna need proof for this.

In the vanilla raws, the population trigger is the only thing that triggers goblin sieges (80 by default).
>>
>>171648598
They scale of the goblin civs themselves.
>>
>>171647709
Allowed jobs are declared at entity level, not creature level, so you can't separate them by caste. Ant men have a warrior caste, but it's applied as a biological difference, not a cultural one. It works since ant men don't have civilizations and don't use professions anyway.

The best you can do is apply creature tokens (such as NATURAL_SKILL) to make castes better at their designated tasks. You'll still get warrior caste soapmakers and worker caste warriors, but they'll be rubbish at their jobs. You could only give the civ large weapons, and make it so only the warrior caste is large enough to wield them, but there's a chance sieging armies just flat out ignore weapon size restrictions. Goblins used to do it, and I'm not sure if it was ever fixed.
>>
>>171648598
I was thinking of the worldgen parameter, but it looks like it's just megabeasts and not regular sieges. TITAN_ATTACK_TRIGGER lets you specify exported and created wealth in addition to population.

Because minecart tracks and trees were done later. Still, you can't actually assign them to other tilesets like creature graphics, just decide which tile from the 256 tile character set it uses.
Why doesn't he rewrite all the other hardcoded tiles yet? Why doesn't he support separate tilesets for all items? Because it's tedious work, it's not that important (compared to stuff like reimplementing the economy, activating the world, etc), and TWBT is good enough for most people that less people complain anymore.

I'm curious, what would a world be like if you went to year 10,000?
>>
>>171651578
Have you considered googling to find out if someone did that already?
>>
>>171651692
Not him, but c'mon. We don't need that snarky attitude here. Your answer could be applied to 99% of all questions asked here, which would totally kill all discussion, and in the long run also the entire general.

Let people ask dumb questions.
>>
>>171651812
>Let people ask dumb questions.
I might have been a bit too snarky. Really, I just wanted to say "I have no idea, but apparently some people did that already, check google and report back with results"
>>
>>171651812
>which would totally kill all discussion
And I forgot, this also applies to asking stupid questions, not only to giving snarky answers.

The guy asking the question should have done his own research, come back with results and start a discussion with the information he found.
>>
>>171651986
IIRC, there was some anon who did it here in the general a month or two ago.

I think he uploaded the world somewhere.

Or maybe, it was just a 1000 yo world.

Yes, solely thanks to this guy
>>171652139
But certainly not thanks to the guy that asked the original question, me who only gave a snarky reply, nor you and me who only discussed the benefits of each option instead of actively improving the thread.
Anyway, that's all I'll contribute to this meta-discussion. If I don't actively improve the thread, I can at least shut up.

Well the answer isn't quite clear because of the way the generator works and nearly all online mentions are from older versions of the game so where the point of googling it?

I've seen elves take over the entire land and humans become nearly extinct, I've seen vampires spread like wildfire and claim every throne, I've seen massive cites become completely abandoned aside from one ruling monarch.

Which, by the way, weren't 64bit yet.

I'm really curious what effect population bottlenecks have. Obviously there is no population-genetic "health" or incest that could be affected by small populations, but I'm wondering how war plays out. Maybe there is some sort of "threshold" below which a population is certain to die out.
Oh man, I really would love for DF to have ecology/evolution dynamics.

>>171654276
Well, we already have genetics, and it is possible to cull the weakest livestock to make the offspring of the rest bigger and stronger.

There are a lot of unknowns surrounding the genetics, though. For example regarding exactly which traits are genetic. Some say that only appearance and size are affected, while others say that attributes are affected, too.

I'm embarking in an area with a nearby tower and elves my civ is at war with.Any tips to survive the undead?I want to throw elfs in pits full of undead.
>>
>>171654680
Sadly, the only way to stop the siege is to kill all siegers, so a pit full of undead will make the siege last forever, preventing any merchants from reaching you.

As for how to survive them, you just have to hope that they appear without the necromancers. if the necros do appear, you have to hope that they run straight to the fort while leaving their army behind, in which case you can kill them safely.

As for the zombies themselves, they are basically ordinary warriors, except they can't feel fear or pain, and they won't die of blood loss or suffocation.

Zombies are a bit tricky since they now have access to full steel armours, but apart from that, just treat them as any other army.
>>
>>171654552
There are a lot of elements missing for something like bottleneck effects to occur and make sense; most importantly:
>There is no natural selection (animals practically don't "live" in history & play in any meaningful way - they just exist, i.e. there is no struggle to survive, they don't reproduce, they don't even interact with other species, nor intraspecific)
>there is no mutation & genetic drift and only appearance/size and maybe attributes, but not general function are inherited, so you can inbreed your offspring from 1 pair of parents as long as you want, there will be no negative consequences

Of course even for DF, expecting the entire genome to be modeled is a bit too much, but at least predator/prey relationships, food webs, and so on would be amazing to have.

I imagine you could achieve a lot with reusing AI code from various sapient actors - i.e. hunters hunting isn't different from predators hunting, and grazers finding pastures on their own can't be all that hard to do either with army movement code already in place.

With that, however you probably reach a point where there might be too many actors active in world history
>>
>>171654276
Well you could consider vampirism, werebeasts, and necromancers a form of evolution since the longer the world generates the more their influence spreads...

Actually will necromancers ever unleash zombies through the world?

Here's my interpretations of the character of Timbukdrew and Ninedots:

For Timbukdrew, we already know that he's a rural American. My interpretation is that he's a stereotypical redneck with a deep fascination for guns and historical battles. he most likely lives in a detached house on a big farm.

For Ninedots, we already know that he's a slav named "Andrei". My interpretation that he's is a Russian gopnik who enjoys listening to ultra Eurobeat while making art in ms paint. He probably lives in a commieblock.

These interpretations should probably be taken into account in order to make successful caricatures of them.

I'd guess the modest mod type stuff? You can straight up do a 1x1 embark without dfhack now, just gotta downsize it, a shorter history 17x17 world shouldn't be bad.

I did an hour long 9999 year worldgen with a 10k pop cap/culled unimportant histfigs/17x17 world/250 site cap on a 3.1 Ghz i3-3220 with 8 GB of ram, but df itself only went up to about 780 MB used at the end there.

>1.35 cpu
That's not how clock speed works.

But to answer your actual question, it depends on how much shit you want to get done, and how fast. I usually played with a pop cap of 30 on my old computer, and would say it's enough to run every industry while fielding a small militia. You can make do with a lot less, if you don't want every industry. In fact, the biggest problem with running a fort with just one dwarf is getting rid of all the other dwarves so you can begin. On the other hand, if you want to experience huge sieges and battles, you'll want to be able to field a LARGE militia, which means expanded support industries in addition to the soldiers themselves. Food, weapons and armor. Warfare is probably the biggest strain on fort population.

To find the population level right for you, I'd suggest starting with a low pop cap and increasing it when you feel like getting more dwarves, until framerate starts dipping under what you find acceptable.

The clock speed is the same across the processor. A 2.7GHz dual-core processor has two 2.7GHz processor cores. At least it should, if the marketing isn't flat out lying.
Clock speed doesn't directly measure how fast the processor is at calculating stuff, just how frequently it does its basic operation. A higher clock speed obviously does correspond to better performance, but there's other stuff going on too. Today's CPUs don't just have higher clock speeds than those from five years ago, they also get more stuff done per clock pulse.
Its a fairly good measure for comparing two CPUs that are very similar, but if you're comparing CPUs from two different manufacturers, (or from two different decades,) clock speed tells you fuck all.

Lum, by the way, studied poetry under the goblin Aslot Monstroushunger. Born in the year 18 and still alive, Aslot is another member of the Dusts of Uttering, as well as the informal Chestnutbuttoned Immortal Poetry Club.
Alsot's mother was one Bosa Spiderbait, a name we've actually seen before. Also a poet, Bosa preferred working alone. Many aspiring poets of those early times sought her tutelage in vain, including Vinena Moistenedpear and Smunstu Archseduced. Bosa even refused to teach her own son, Aslot. She did teach one person, the dwarf Rigòth Chantedearths, who later taught Vinena and Smunstu. Bosa was murdered in the year 41 by a human by the name of Zomuth Curlcloistered.

Zomuth had been abducted from the town of Chestnutbuttoned when he was only one year old, but managed to escape and find his way back somehow, only to be abducted a second time, by the same goblin! Some might argue that Zomuth's second "abduction" may not have been entirely nonconsensual - Zomuth was clearly a very resourceful child, and he had come under not one but two attacks by creatures of the night the preceding year, perhaps fouling his perception of his hometown somewhat.
Whatever the case, Zomuth became accustomed to the goblin life, became a legal citizen of the Reclusive Malice at the age of eleven, married the thirteen-year-old Upek Mellowwish the following year, and had his first child the year after that. Zomuth lived fast and died young, siring four more children before the goblin politics claimed his life at the age of 24.

It's surprisingly difficult to quit legends diving once you get started.

>>
>>171674475
Man I don't know. I've only heard of fps death being like 10 fps. I never heard of an average fps other than the max at 150
>>
>>171668824
He outlived all of his apprentices, wow
>>
>>171674810
The default cap is 100. Even that is unrealistic for an average fort after the first year or so. Advising someone to try to stay around 150 is absurd. Like, self defense against fruits absurd.
>>
>>171671473
No way to say, really. Besides the dwarf count, it depends heavily on the size of your embark area, and what FPS you consider playable. The latter, especially, can be a major chokepoint.
Some people are happy to let the game plod on at 2 FPS, designating projects and then alt-tabbing to something else for an hour while the dwarves get it underway. Others insist on triple digits, like this lunatic >>171672171.

Just try it out. Start a default size site with the default population cap, and scale down if the game feels too slow.
Alternatively, start a 2x2 site with popcap set to 10 or something, and increase it if you think your system can handle more dwarves.
There are ways to get more speed, from using DFHack to delete all your clothes to modding dwarves to walk faster, but first you need to get a feel for how the game runs on your machine.
>>
>>171671473
Also it depends on how long you intend to stay alive, how efficient you make your pathways, and how you handle things like liquids.
>>
>>171675370
Sorry ;;
I might just be incredibly slow. What do you guys accomplish in the first half year?
>Like, self defense against fruits absurd.

>>
>>171670553

uncanny
>>
>>171675840
Depends on the fort, but usually a good deal. How much you get done isn't really the issue, though. Unless you're megaforting or sealing up you're not likely to ever have more pathing in your fort than on the surface. Just getting more dwarves/animals/objects is going to start grinding at your fps right away. I guess if you play a tiny embark and don't attract/allow many migrants you can keep up those numbers for a little longer.
>>
>>171677103
There should be some sort of benchmark

Seems to make history in worldgen worse because DF don't respond half of the time while that don't happens with normal priority but I don't know abput in-game.

I use advanced parameters because I want a single continent with a north and south pole cause I like to pretend the map is the world in itself instead of a region.

If you are talking about the dwarves, is a bit of luck mixed with raw changes. Only 3 dwarven civs spawned and 2 quickly. The kobolds spawned but they are dead either by hunger or monster rampages.
I should really add the [NO_EAT] tag for the kobolds.

Can someone tell me why this shit is considered to be a game in 2017?
It reminds me of that soup with the letter shaped pastta, what a fuckin joke. I have no problem with shitty graphics as long as i can vaguely see whats happening, in df, you can get swarmed by an entire army without any warning because they were not on the same height as you, how fuckin dumb is that?
You cunts are playing one of the shittiest simulations of all time. Its like a house made out of lego, sure it took a long time to make and certainly has a lot of work in it but it still lets the air through and collapses the second you touch it. Its just shit.

If you're digging, for example, a 5z hole, you dig the entire top level away first, then the entire new top level, then the entire new top level, etc until you reach z-5. If you start digging the z below another one before it's been dug away, your miners will cause cave ins.

>The best you can do is apply creature tokens (such as NATURAL_SKILL) to make castes better at their designated tasks. You'll still get warrior caste soapmakers and worker caste warriors, but they'll be rubbish at their jobs.
Easy to fix this with actual biology. In the vast majority of cases, myrmecologists refer to ants by name like major/media/minor/minima based n morphology instead of "worker" or "soldier"; because in reality very few species actually even have a cast that does nothing but fight.

They can jump through fortifications, but won't ever do so on purpose. They can also dodge through walls under the right conditions, but again won't ever do so on purpose. The latter is definitely a bug, it's unclear if the former is.

Chess is a crappy tactical turn based RPG developed by a bunch of monkeys.

Right away you'll notice Chess has no storyline. Instead, all you notice is the the White army and the Black army are fighting each other over a battlefield. Note the "a battlefield," because Chess only has one story map.

As for the actual combat, it's extremely dull. Each unit can kill another with only one hit. This means units with a real good movement ability dominate the field (more on that bellow). There aren't even any combat animations or anything that happens in combat. One unit moves on it's space and "captures" it, and the piece is removed from the game with no form of action or special effects.

Yawn.

Chess has shitty class balance. The Queen is flat out overpowered while your actual front line units, the Pawns. can't do shit. I think the developers were afraid that no one would use the female character so they buffed up her abilities really high but now theres no point in using any other unit.

The rest of the units suck. Rooks can only move in 4 directions, same with Bishops. Boring. Also, whats up with the Knight? It has the most bizzare combat abilities of all the units. They're retardly hard to use cause they jump around like retards to move and attack. The devs should have named this unit Ninja, since Knights didn't jump around like that in real life.

Worst part, is the king. You see, the devs decided that if your king gets captured, you instantly lose the game. W-T-F? This wouldn't be a problem, except that he can't move for crap. Seriously, the most important unit in the game can only move 1 space a turn? Good luck keeping him alive while every other unit in the game dances around him.

Unbalanced classes, lackluster gameplay, and not to mention repetitive 1 hour+ games. Chess is not worth the time or your money. Buy Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea instead.

3 out of 10.
