I'm in the process of making a music mod, I'm leaning towards having it contain music from all the games though primarily having the Peace Walker/V motif for the main themes (loadout etc)

Trouble I'm having is finding combat music that works well for XCOM though, some of it is 10/10 already but others I feel don't really fit the urgency of X2, any suggestions?

Listening to Shagohod or Rex's Lair on stealth missions is perfect

One thing I always enjoyed about UFO landings and crashes was fighting inside the ship. Large landeds were always one of my favorite mission types for this reason.

I really wish there were more indoor combat environments in XCOM 2. One of the map mods introduces a huge and beautiful house but I've never actually fought in it.

My strategy for early LW1 is to go in with shotgun scouts and assaults, replace their armor with the light version for more mobility. I give the assaults and scouts motion trackers so they can safely move further without activating contact when possible. I also give them smoke grenades so they can give themselves better cover if shit ever hits the fan.

For my rookies I also give them the light armor and SMGs and just go for super aggressive flanks with needle grenades as items to ensure they get the kills required to promote in one, if it comes to that.

You basically want to play super aggressively while you're still fighting sectoids. The instant thin mints and floaters show up you stop giving your scouts and assaults light armor and play more defensively while also bringing less rookies. I don't play with commander's choice so I basically have no infantries and no snipers early on; they're all turning into assaults and scouts. This works out since I chop up a lot of scouts into pathfinders later and assaults die/get wounded really often so you need a large number of them anyway. Your mileage may vary.

I'm bringing PFCs every mission in March even though it's kinda late (22nd of March) so I can make them into SPECs and then the SPECS into LCPLS or w/e next month, etc.

I grenade to guarantee kills and survival over loot. I don't have commander's choice either, and I have like 6 infantry and 3 of everything else.

The enemy will almost always run away if you flank them and they can't kill/hit the unit that is flanking them. You can exploit this by setting people up on overwatch/and or suppressing them. If a unit runs a suppression then the suppressor gets an opportunist overwatch shot on them.

Blasting cover up with engineers helps too, give them sapper at rank up and it makes them more reliable in the damage role.

Another thing I like is using my scout and assault in tandem as a front-liner duo, giving them both shotguns so they can get in close to deal with threats the rest of the squad can't.

Sectoids, Drones and Outsiders are all you face in the first month, of which outsiders are the only real threat. And Outsiders can be severely weakened by flashbangs, since they initially lack any abilities other than moving and shooting.

Long war affords a lot of flexibility that you didn't have in vanilla, so ultimately you will have to experiment and find what works best for you.

Once you get a fair chunk of your roster to specs you should take some specs on a mission or two. Having even a few LCPLs is a big help on the terror mission, especially since assaults can get CCS at LCPL (YUGE vs. lids).

I play the opposite of the other guy, I make sure all my guys have 7 or 8 health by using heavy armor and plates so a sectoid can't oneshot them, use a motion tracker to find the meld before I get bogged down, then settle down comfortably into the trench warfare with a couple medkits and. Not to say that I don't flank, but once enemy shots aren't deadly you lose the incentive to rush rush rush.

Frag grenades don't usually kill sectoids if you aim at their cover, so you're only losing the 0.2 meld that disappears when an alien takes any explosive damage.

ok, shinobi-specialist combo earns you bonuses off stealth missions but every other class is fucking unnecessary.

why even flank when i have guaranteed hit on my autocannons(boy this game really is bizzaro-ufo) and my snipers are so fucking jacked up on their bonuses they have guaranteed hit by default. i just find elevation in the corner and turtle there.

Alright, I've fucking had it.

Each time I play LW2 with some mods I installed today after EACH mission I get a bug when my screen is stuck at the bottom of Avenger and the only way to fix this is to check the integrity of game's files.

How do I fix this whole issue? Do I have to turn off all my mods for LW2?

Really though I love anything that's not a Roadway. I like the more dynamic flanking/cover destruction action, and less of the static gunlines. Absolute favorite goes to Urban Close Quarters maps.

Small and medium ufos will always be my favorite. In a really long campaign they can get tedious, but that's just the mission frequency, not the mission itself. It's got that nice sweep and clear fire-fights going on the outside of the ship, and then you breach and clear. As a bonus, this mission/map actually plays out nearly exactly the same in both X-COM and XCOM for that extra comfy bonus.

I really think the psi system of the future should be like the MECs of LW1. As in, you class and psi-class will be related and unique. no, it's because soldiers just get put off by the ayys. this is why will is the fastest growing stat. also there wasn't much combat on earth before xcom so even special forces soldiers haven't got much experience of actual combat against aliens. that's why their stats grow so quickly- they're not getting better at soldering, they're just getting used to the ayys.

There is a lot of reasons for why stats could grow, but the idea that there is no where to fight is just ridiculous. All the low-level conflicts that are always burning throughout the Middle East and Africa mean if you are looking for a fight you are going to get one, and I don't think I need to mention that most of peoples' skill in the field comes down to training and practice.
One of my more favorite concepts, is that x-com doesn't answer to any one world government, and is authorized to do anything to boost combat strength. This means insane training, but also heavy use of performance enhancing drugs. Legal, illegal, experimental, everybody gets stuck on a drug cocktail regimines the second they join. Because after all with the high casualty rates, you are much more likely to die in combat than whatever you are being pumped.

i openly admit that i shat on technicals really hard at first

then i realised you need to make high aim soldiers into rocketeers due to scatter, that range increases scatter, that having used a blue move (even to reload) increases scatter

after learning that rockets are pretty damn reliable

also actually learning how to take advantage of the cover system for concealment ambushes was really useful, just don't get flanked and predict the patrol path and the enemies can end up really close

Drop the psi-amp (the hand part, stick it on their back), implement a system where vets can become psi troops, and imo, already better than X1 psi. I wanted to like new-XCOM2. I really did. But here's how it is.

New- XCOM 2 is sufficiently buggy that I can't tolerate playing it any more.

New-XCOM1 was a worthy successor - in terms of gameplay - and reboot - in terms of story - of the original Enemy Unknown. It reintroduced everyone to the story, provided a feel that was similar without being identical, and put its own, slightly new twist on things.

New-XCOM2 was just new-XCOM1 in a new skin. Except it was supposed to take place 20 years after new-XCOM1... only, in those 20 years, apparently all technology, information, and equipment from the first game was... lost. Disappeared. Who knows? The story line doesn't make any sense, and the writing isn't a whole lot better. The difficulties levels are ridiculous (Toddler, Unforgiving, and Don't Even Bother) and the actual game mechanics and interactions are woefully unexplained which can lead someone down an in-game-month-long rabbit hole, only to realize you screwed up something up all that time ago and now can't fix it.

Today was the last straw, though. Just wrapped up a mission to destroy an alien base, and it fatally crashes /every/ time I exfil my troops. Reload the game, crashes again. Reboot the computer, crashes again. So basically I can't progress in the game any more. I hate to say it, but it appears as though Firaxis Games and 2K are trading on the name they inherited and the good will of folks who played the original, and both are only going to last so long.

Of all the problems with optimization Xcom2 has i very rarely see people complain about crashing, it has never crashed on me either and that's with hundreds of mods installed. As for the difficulty thing, git gud.

And as for the story, while i personally don't care about the story your complaint is because you don't know what the story is, this doesn't take place 20 years after the end of EU/EW, this takes place in a world where Xcom lost the war in EU/EW and in which Xcom didn't even get out of laser tech.

This a hundred times. I won my Rookie game, and wanted to turn up the difficult and start again. I'm on Veteran now, and I'd forgotten how much the early game is awful. The aspects that the difficult change brings are manageable - I'm losing more soldiers, but I can git gud and get through it. But it's just not much fun having to repeatedly shortman timer missions.

Yes and no. I actually enjoyed it for the most part except for the fact that every month you need to go do the cruise line terror missions which is the same mission every-time, and it's a two parter. Absolutely grueling.
I honestly gave up on it, because I was getting little to none ufo missions (which I was enjoying) and just had to keep trudging through cruise liner missions. They are cool like the first two times (max) but then they really start taking it's toll.
It's funny, because the game is at it's peak when you are actually underwater, but it keeps sending me to shitty ships.

Snap shot can be fun but it turns your sniper into a high aim rookie with +1 damage. Snipers have poor health progression and are very vulnerable if they come under fire. It's better to keep them at range.

What's the overall strategy for staring vanilla xcom 2? I know the first one is rush lasers and get satellites up, but I just had to gave up on a play through because I spent so much time on mag weapons and then had to wait a month to get one engineer. Can you clarify this? Honestly don't know what you mean. Do you mean sectoids? Carry flashbangs. A flashbang used on the sectoid removes the mindcontrol, and will kill the psi zombie if they don't have one. If they aren't flanking one of their guys, or one of their psi abilites can be used, they don't shoot, so use this too your advantage.
Usually it is wise to focus other enemies that will shoot you, and the kill the sectoid.

Yep, but like I said, flashbangs mean you can safely negate them for the most part. Shotguns and swords will make quick work of them, if you aren't risking too much getting close.

Are you asking about Long War? Yes it adds cool stuff. A campaign that should last 2-3 years (good and bad, mostly good). 2 new weapon tiers, 40 man roster, new classes, new mec classes, psi work differently, the officer speciality, more ship tech, more projects, it changes up the maps (it can't change maps, but they can change where your squad spawns, which changes how maps play significanlty), adds more soldier nationaility voices, more armor, more equipment, etc. etc.

Complete overhaul. The rough aliens are memed alot, not so much the easier early game, and the fact that your squad becomes an impressive killing machine to match the aliens.

Thanks that clears some stuff up and does sound fun. Im glad about the early game part since the I feel the problem with EW and even going back to the original xcom was the early game was balls to the wall hard with a lot of luck then once you got rolling with a major sniper with laser weapons and the like the game was cake. And can modders really not add maps? Thats weird.

The most important changes from vanilla are that you get way more options in the early game [instead of frag grenades being your only option for two months], and that you're forced to train a whole roster instead of relying on the same 4 guys and nearly automatically losing if they squadwipe. Also everything gets more survivable so you can actually rely on cover instead of having ayys oneshot you randomly.

The ayys get a lot of bonuses but they're partially to offset all the options xcom receives, and to make fights harder without bringing back the oneshot kills from vanilla.
