There are any number of ways to do that without even approaching the general vicinity of masterwork and all the crap it comes with.

No one forces you to embark where there's flux. Iron works just fine on its own.
>>
>>170243386
Yeah, like installing the individual mod that does that. Masterwork is shit because it slaps a truckload of mishmashing mods together while hogging all the glory, basically. Not because the mods themselves suck or make the game worse.

Here's the tileset I mentioned several threads ago. As promised, it was not worth waiting for. It's simply curses_640x300 adjusted to make it square with no other changes at all. I'm not sure if it's just that I'm not used to a square tileset or if the blank space is throwing me off or what, but it just looks kind of weird to me, which is disappointing. Oh well.
>>
>>170246491
Because none of us have a clue what is wrong in such a big grab bag of clusterfucks as that one, and have no interest in learning enough about it to be able to diagnose a problem or suggest a solution besides "play something besides masterwork" really.

There are people who think masterwork //is// dwarf fortress, and there are people who think meph did shit besides go around asking modders if he can use their shit.
>>
>>170246609
Ok then, was just curious.
>>170246689
Oh that actually makes a lot of since. I was just looking for a new DF experience, I wouldn't mind trying some crafting mods for adventure mod or something. Any suggestions? Or is Vanilla the best route?
>>
>>170246847
>Any suggestions?
Just go through the post listing and linking the mods on the bayforum and grab what gets your attention.
>>
>>170246847
For adventuring mods that are kept up to date and should be fun, adventurecraft is kinda carrying the torch from wanderer's friend and similar such mods that add more crafting/weapon/tool/etc reactions for adventurers. Plus it doesn't add in a shit ton of random crap so it's easy to diagnose!

Dont listen to these kids. Half of them only browse dfg in order to view dankmemes without actually playing DF.

Masterwork is a bold mod and with that comes a lot of bugs but thats not why people hate it. They literally hate it because Meph (the masterwork dev) started a patreon and uses the money to travel the world experiencing things that they never will.

Some say this violates some ethical code and that the money should go directly into the mod but the way I see it he has been doing the work and continues to do so so where the money goes is irrelevant.

In summary: Fuck off elves.
>>
>>170247120
>>170247228
Sweet I'll try out Adventurecraft and All Races Playable. I have DFhack, LAA, Dwarftherapist, and soundsense, did I miss anything? Just out of curiousity does anyone play with soundsense? I kind of like having interactions make sound but its quality it can be a bit lacking.
>>
>>170247406
It sounds like a pretty typical mod argument to me then. Assuming you've played it, have you tried out Hermit mode in 1.23 yet?
>>
>>170247406
>nobody could ever object to anyone else's actions except out of envy
God, I hate this way of thinking.

The reason people object to Meph's money shenanigans is because he's getting paid for something that is about 99.9% other people's work.

I'd give you a 5/10, except that I'm afraid you're serious.
>>
>>170247571
I haven't. I only use masterwork on occasion when I feel like exploring other playable races and new workshops/furnaces etc

Just dupe one of the actual civilised entities (like the gobbos or the humans), change the name and change the creature to drows.

For the drow creature, just make a creature that copies all tokens from elves, but then changes the colours used for the skin and hair.
>>
>>170248051
I'll bite.

Nexus actually hosts the content, which is more than can be said about Meph. He just leeches off the repository (which Toady pays for himself nowadays, IIRC).

Meph is actually so low that he takes donations for files that other people host for free for him.
>>
>>170247886
That picture is funnier than it should be.

Also don't respond to the masterb̶a̶i̶t̶workfag, I do agree that it is shitty for him to make an income off of it, because he presents it like he's doing shit, and it's money that could go towards the toad.

Mostly I just don't like having questions or requests for help in /dfg/ which I can't even offer the slightest assistance with beyond a standoffish "do something else" response, but I'm not about to delve into that shitpile to figure out which part of whatever pre-digested mod might be responsible for whichever problem.
>>
>>170248176
Is this what were doing tonight? Arguing the nuances of a mod launcher?

All im saying is the guy loved the game, did something to try to help other players, and found a way to make money doing so. I dont understand why he's being vilified.

If anything you should be mad at the people donating.

I'm sorry. I'm just so tired of many of the MW users.

They always assume that the features in MW are actually vanilla users.

For example, (special raw-defined variants, I assume) werebeasts and demons have civs in MW, so many players who are used to them assume that that's the way those work in vanilla, as well.

One time a few weeks ago, someone mentioned that they had found a werebeast in human form in a lair (this behaviour among werebeasts is well known). Then some fucking MW user came in and said that it can't be a werebeast, because they only form civs, and don't live in lairs.

I know I'm rambling. I'm just so tired of people spreading misinfo because of this stupid """official""" modpack. It's just a matter of time before MW-fags tart rewriting the main wiki.

Forgoing most defenses and just making the first layer of my fort a bunch of barracks+squads, the idea is that instead of bothering with long ass sieges and the attackers just walk straight into 40+ military dwarfs and get instantly rekt. Good idea or bad idea?
>>
>>170249413
No problem. And I did learn a few other things during my adventures.

>You can recruit underground tribe people to follow you if they aren't hostile, and sleeping in their camp will protect you from most common dangers.

>Climbing skill is essential, of course. Especially for pits that extend from one layer to another.

>As of the current update, cavern monsters like blind cave ogres and trolls won't attack you unless you attack them. I think its a bug though

>Remember to bring an axe with you before you go down into the cave, as you can't find those small rocks you need to make one.

>If you have an axe, you can construct an underground log cabin.

>You can make a lot of money collecting undeground vermin such as purring maggots, as you can sell them to vendors in adventure mode, if they're in a cage.

Dwarf fortress is more fun than rimworld in its current state. Rimworld has alot of potential but it still isn't as good as dorfs atm. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. Fucking pederast. You rotten, disgusting slug, bucephalus leech. I hate you and your entire body smells like feces. Do you have any idea of how long you have been there, sitting on this same chair that because of some unknown miracle managed to withstand your massive weight? You have been there for weeks, months, locked up in your room that smells like Doritos and Wawa milk, jacking off to your Haruhi wallpaper and posting 填MAD.jpg・on this fucking imageboard. I don稚 even know how you manage to type with your thick, greasy fingers, or how you still manage to find your tiny penis among all the fat flaps on your belly and groin area. FUTAMOD WHEN

With:
-male & female reproductive organs (womb & balls}, both applicable on the same pawn
-male & female sexual organs (dick & pussy}, both applicable on the same pawn
-necrophilia & nymphomaniac traits, necrophiliacs getting mood boost from harvested organs from zombies / dead pawns
-pawn thoughts from dick sizes in relationship, masochists getting mood boost from it
-craftable reproductive organs, from balls of steel, wooden and iron dildos to bionic vacuum pussies and golden pleasuresticks
-pawns with ascetic and prostophobe trait prefer and enjoy the low-grade solutions while greedy, prostophile and others the high-grade ones
-sculptable nudes, dildos and wooden horses
-new disease called "futa fever" needing regular treatment in every few days - if futa fever is not treated a new minor break called "stalking" will happen - after multiple minor breaks a major break will make the colonist leave to look for futas elsewhere - futa fever may disappear on its own or after being in a relationship with a futa
-futa dick juice with medicinal properties and as a luxury food ingredient (think of incest jelly but hotter) - may cause "futa fever" if taken regularly - may cause minor non-harmful addiction raising consciousness a little when taking in moderation and decreasing it when overdosed (range is from +10% to -10%)
-unarmed melee attack called "futacockslap" which incapacitates the opponent with a very high chance
-growable dickshroom / cockshroom plant which can be refined into aphrodisiac (effects yet to be determined)
-OPTIONAL: dick graphics for pawns when nude

>>
>>170274029
Goblins being ruled by demons is pretty heavily implied, anon. Dark Forts and other gobbo sites sometimes, at least once per worldgen iirc, have connections to underworld spires, so at the very least one would assume goblins and demons have some form of contact.

And like I said, not all demons are wiped out in worldgen, and they're not impossible to kill. Titans and FBs also can get killed in worldgen too, but it's less frequent as there are A LOT more demons spawned in worldgen. The only reason people have trouble with demons at all is that they usually swarm, especially when popping a vein.

It's not implied. It's explicit. Every goblin civ is initially ruled by a demon. That demon ruler is often murdered by a literally who goblin, after which point the goblin civ is ruled by a goblin and behaves exactly as it did before in every sense.
There aren't a lot of demons spawned in worldgen. There are exactly as many demons spawned as there are goblin civs, and they will often be wiped out in small or old worlds. No other demons interact with the world in any way or exist in any sense at all except as a procgenned raw in world.dat until a player goes and finds them after worldgen. They're spawned from thin air as needed when a player either goes to hell in adv mode or pops the adamantine tube in fort mode. They don't even have a defined abstract pop, they're just "unnumbered", like vermin.
>>
>>170272379
>do not age
>require neither food nor water to live
>ruled by a demon from hell
It's not really reflected in the game right now, but it's a common feature of orcs that they actually DON'T get anything done, except when united under a non-goblin leader who can inspire enough fear to organize them into an army. Left to their own devices, they quickly descend into tribal warfare.
>>
>>170276790
>ruled by a goblin and behaves exactly as it did before in every sense
You can argue that's either inherited behavior from being under a demon's rule, or toady being lazy and not making gobbo civs complete anarchy as per their morals after their demon overlord dies.
>>

A bit ridiculous, yeah, I mean, most of the dibujor tiles are just pulled off the demo images dibujor posted in his own thread it looks like.

Do I resize/rescale tilesets and share them? Yes. I've done a lot of this shit.

Do I tell people "I didn't make these, but I totally intend to I swear, but until then I made these" like that?
Fuck no! I love my goddamn tile/graphic artists, I love my drawfags, without them all of us fuckers would be sitting around using pixelated mushed up tiny tiles or trying to make our own and fucking up totally.

The difference between the sets I upscaled and snipped and fussed over for a dickyear in GIMP vs the fucking tech demo dePlatino set up to show how vector art can be used with tilesets is painful but fuck if I'm not gonna use the better looking set!

The last big thing, I think, was the addition of temples, taverns and libraries, and reworking dwarven needs. Instead of going on breaks, the dwarves will now go party/pray/read in whatever recreational quarters you provide. They'll also attract offsite visitors if you let them, and you occasionally get bards, mercenaries or scholars asking to stay at your fort for longer.
Also we have 64-bit support now.

The next update will have worldgen artifacts, item display cases, and the ability to send dwarves from your fortress to attack other sites.
>>
>>170289250
If you've got dfhack (the current beta for 43.05 is stable as fuck, to crash it I have to do really stupid shit while trying to see what exactly can crash in a script I'm writing, just in case, for people who aren't trying to crash it and aren't using TWBT in adventurer mode it's fine) then you can just open the units screen and go into the manipulator to do it.

Yeah, but nothing they do, or anyone else for that matter, is considered treasonous, and there are no historical events for treason or the execution therefore. It's just a line in a text file with no effect in game.

>>170291016
Murders don't involve combat or duels or anything like that. The entire historical event is "X murdered Y on date Z". If there's any such thing as a failed murder attempt, there's no evidence of it. So my impression is more or less that i'm playing this wrong because for a very long time, I had my dwarves focused on a pretty wide variety of jobs. Watching other people play and seeing the way they laid out their fortresses it seems like a smarter thing to do is to make the vast majority of your dwarves miners, with a few smiths, furnace operators, farmers, and maybe a carpenter or two + military to keep the rest of them occupied. But a solid 80% of the fortress should be miners. This is also came out because I noticed that mining doesn't really seem to have any "traits" attached to it - more or less every dwarf seems like they are "fit to mine."

So I guess I'd like some kind of confirmation on this. I realize management styles differ, but as far as textbook, someone who's working on their first fortress advice.

I do have a second question, which is how many masons / stone detailers do you guys have? I feel like that's also paramount to having a good fortress, obviously you eventually want the stone fortress to be smooth and valuable so everyone gets happy thoughts and what not, but again, as a percentage of population, what do you recommend? Is it low, to keep the stone detailing skills high, despite the slowness of the progress? Is it high? Somewhere in between?
>>
>>170315778
That 80% should be haulers or the largest %.
>>
>>170315778
I usually only ever have two or three miners.
Mining isn't a terribly crucial job that needs to be done super fast, and a legendary miner or two will mine through stone fast enough unless you're trying to totally hollow out the earth or something.
I tend to have more masons when I'm doing an aboveground fort and more stone detailers when doing a below ground fort. Typically for stone detailing, I enable it on everyone who isn't a farmer, because I care about having a smoothed out fortress more than high quality engravings.

In general though I don't pay too close attention to what labors dwarves have enabled, I just enable the master labor for whatever a dwarf's highest skill is, so proficient clothiers get all crafting labors, competent farmers get all farming labors, novice soapmakers get drafted into the military, etc. and if I find I need more of a certain labor I just add it to a couple of random dwarves.
>>
>>170315778
For me a handful of miners carve out shit faster than the rest can clean up after them. So I have a shitload of useless bastards set to haul/engrave. Sometimes a wave of 20 immigrants ends up on their knees, smoothing floors until they die or the fortress is finished.
>>
>>170315778
80% is ridiculously excessive.
I have an enormous fort, and still growing. I run a population of 125 with ~40 miners. The fort is just shy of 18 years old, and many of my miners have been mining for less than half the fort's life. Most forts could get away with a lot fewer miners, and most do.
As for stone detailers, I have a few dedicated detailers but many of my miners do double (or triple) duty. It's useful to have them able to finish mining a level and smooth the walls right away so I don't have to wait for other dwarves to get there and do their work before I can start the next leg of mining. Unless you have a shitton of smoothing to do you probably don't need to do that, a4nd can get away with only a handful of detailers. Consider having a few dwarves with no other moodable skills do your detailing, because one fey or secretive mood will get you a low-effort legendary detailer. You need even fewer masons. Once you get a couple up to a high level they can shit out more exceptional and masterwork furniture in one year than you're likely to ever need. A block farm is a good way to achieve that if you have enough projects to use the blocks on.

I will remove all the hills and mountains on my embark. Then I will dig out the whole map into a huge crater. And then I will raise a spire of metal, gems and magma in the middle, on top of which there will be a lavish room for only one dwarf. The rest will live in shacks at the feet of this magnificent palace.

Once upon a time, there was a specist tree. Seriously, you are going to be terryfied by this tree. High on a hill overlooking the entrance to the dwarven fortress, the specist tree grew where the grass was half rope reed. Children would visit during the sunlit hours and ask for -<<+mango wood bracelets+>>-, and the specist tree would shake its branches and drop the useless junk that menaced with spikes of microcline and was encrusted with goblin bone without being polished. The children sold many of the specist tree's wodden wares to filthy elves just to piss them off and bartered the rest to the annual dwarven caravan beneath the shade of its specist branches. One day the children brought Ñilun, a boy who had just immigrated to the fortress, to play around the specist tree.

"Let Ñilun have a -<<+Giant Panda leather amulet+>>-," asked a little girl muffled through her moustache.

"I don't think so. He's a human," said the tree. "It is terrifying." said the children and they spoke to the tree angrily: "I have defeated many fearsome foes!", but it would not shake its branches to give Ñilun an amulet, and it said: "It was inevitable".

"I can't believe the specist tree is such a specist," said one child. The children momentarily reflected that perhaps this kind of behavior was how the specist tree got its legendary nickname.

It was decided that if the tree was going to deny craftsdwarfship to Ñilun then nobody would take its craftsdwarfship. The children stopped visiting the specist tree.

>posting in spermwhaleman engraving repository

How do you do it
>>
>>170335967

The specist tree grew quite lonely. After many solitary weeks it saw a child flying a <<cat nail kite>> across the rope reed field.

"Can I offer you some *<<*Rhesus macaque bone crown*>>*?" asked the tree eagerly. "All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality and the object menaces with spikes of masterfully crafted elf bone."

"Fuck off, you goddamn Masterwork player," said the child.

The specist tree was upset, because while it was very specist, it did not personally subscribe to Meph's cancerous ideology. The specist tree decided that it would have to give merchandise to human children, not because it was tolerant, but because otherwise it would face ostracism from dwarven children.

And so, social progress would have been made if it weren't for that lobotomized miner whose toe-dipping in the endless magma sea caused a tantrum spiral which destroyed the fortress soon afterwards.

About that book Toady keeps talking about.

Is it some kind of introductory book that he and Tanya writes themselves, or is it just an anthology that they are the editors for?

the "possible" skin colours picked for the abstract gene pool for each civ have the same range as IRL.

the selection itself (at the beginning of worldgen) is probably entirely RNG'd.

the numerous nuances of brown are more plentiful than the colours you'd consider white, so obviously they're gonna get selected more often.

Cave moss counts as cave flora, and will only grow after you breached the caverns. Like all other plants, it will only grow on soil.

Ordinary moss doesn't actually count as flora. Instead, it's a hard-coded mechanic that affects stone floors if they're left undisturbed long enough. These floors turn green, and are referred to as "mossy floor".

Ordinary moss is completely unrelated to caverns. It will grow regardless of whether you cracked them open or not.

Cooks are hugely underappreciated in DF

Just imagine a dwarf who spent his whole life cooking the most bizarre and thickest shit in some pot and then hacking up thousands of animals to feed the growing population

the dwarf would be built like Hercules and probably able to snap a titans neck at some point.

not to mention the amount of rage that he would build up during all the years of unappreciated labor and insults from the spoiled nobility.

Now imagine some dumb Kobold or cat running into the kitchen and knocking the 200liter pot over with the entire stew for the day. that he toiled the entire night before to make.

The forces of heaven don't stand much of a chance so far. They do pretty well against some demon types, but are helpless against the fire breathers.

Heaven has suffered 43 casualties so far. Hell has suffered 11.

The fire breather, a "scorching demon" called "Ortatlosh", is just about to meet the archangel, a "Doom of Idekikud".

The fire breather is described as a "gigantic, eightlegged ankylosaurid composed of flame". The archangel is described as "an enormous, hairy saurupod".

It's possible that Toady, will, eventually, spend a few years implementing multi-threading and multi-core capability into the game.
>>
>>170370880
I'll note that there seems to be some mysterious conditions that will allow creatures to attack a hot creature, but just being adjacent isn't all there is to it. I had an iron man in my last .40.24 fort "fight" a fire FB for over 8 months before it managed to get an attack in. Most of that time it just stood there tanking hits and occasionally dodging. But it did eventually kill it, and earned the name Ginzithus for its trouble. I don't remember what it translated to.
In any case, if one of our thread's dfhack wizards were to investigate, finding out what conditions allow attacking hot creatures could be pretty revealing about the nature of the bug.

I think it'd be cool if goblin ethics were decided by the demon that rules them, like if they have a depravity demon then they're super anarchist but a war or fortress demon makes them super rigid and militant. >>170373659

Yes, buy be aware that if the world is going to become fucked up and buggy volcanoes are where they'll do it. A good comparison I read was that they're like moles; they might not be cancer, but if anything is going to go wrong that's where it'll probably happen.

It may not be a bug that dwarves won't path to them, although an argument could be made that (at least some dutiful) dwarves should be willing to sacrifice life and limb for the fort, and they have no compunctions about running into clouds of poisonous vapors or deadly dust or climbing to their doom, etc.
What definitely is a bug is that creatures (even when they would not be harmed by fire) will not attack an adjacent creature made of fire under most circumstances, won't attempt to leave a hot tile to save themselves in that situation, won't path through or out of smoke.
This appears to be something introduced in .40 with the combat/move speed split. Prior to that, FBs made of fire would routinely maim or kill the dwarf or squad that took them down by exploding on death. They still explode but it's really rare to lose melee dwarves this way now because they would rather slowly melt to death while blocking and dodging the FB than attack it. Incidentally, that's my theory on how Ginzithus got the kill; it dodged into a square that wasn't fire-hot, and attacked as soon the FB got adjacent before the tile could heat up.

Might of been on a whole 'nother rig altogether.
Here are the colors I would of used in paint.net while I slapped them together.
I used the late war German (Saxon) uniforms so the color would be 4th row 4th from the left
The medic (Brandenburg early war) was first row 1st from the left.
English (from the southern half of the island) men 1st row 5th from the left
French Medic 2nd row 1st on the left

If I cant find them, I am almost willing to make new ones. (also make them more accurate if I can)

The easiest way to do it by accident is probably to breach through an aquifer, then forget about the aquifer, and dig upwards into it when you get the brilliant idea to build a second entrance to your fort.
Also, players are sometimes surprised by the fact that water flows upward through a U-bend, but that's a mistake you usually only make once.

>>
>>170404281
No, teleporting water is kind of a shorthand description of how water pressure works. It's technically accurate, but not really the whole picture. It's an intended mechanic.
The bug I'm referring to is a rare terrain generation bug where change in elevation causes a river to flow out of it's path. This can happen at river intersections where the water's exit tiles aren't sufficient to handle the flow from the higher river, which can lead to your fort flooding if you have ground in the lower portion of the map and choose to have a fort entrance there.

I usually take a dedicated miner, a carpenter+woodcrafter who'll chop wood until I can make someone else do it but doesn't start with any skill in it, a mason+architect, either a mechanic or a weaponsmith+armorsmith, two farmer+threshers, or just one of those and an animal handler with milking+spinning+shearing+cheesemaking, and a brewer+cook who'll tan+butcher as well until someone else comes along.

I take sheep or goats, pigs, a cat, a pick, an anvil, and an axe. You don't really need anything else.

You know generally you don't need a metal crafter/armorer/weaponsmith, animal caretaker, milker, spinner, shearer, cheesemaker, or a brewer or cook on initial embark. Usually the first migrant wave shows up beofe you can even dig out the basis of a half-decent fort, and then you can just reassign people accordingly since you don't NEED to have any skill to start doing a job. Not to mention currently Animal Caretaking is bugged and does NOTHING.

What does embark now actually give you in terms of dwarves? I actually don't think I've ever used it.
>>
>>170416519

>>
>>170416601
Boy that sure was hard to find.

Play Now!

You can forgo the process of assigning skills and supplies and instead select Play Now! This option will give you a selection of Dwarves with the following profiles:

Miner: Adequate Miner
Woodworker: Novice Carpenter, Bowyer
Woodcutter: Novice Wood Cutter, Furnace Operator, Wood Burner, Grower, Herbalist, Brewer, Cook, Lye Maker, and Potash Maker
Stoneworker: Novice Mason, Engraver, Building Designer, and Mechanic
Jeweler: Novice Stone Crafter, Wood Crafter, Bone Carver, Gem Cutter, and Gem Setter
Fisherdwarf: Novice Fisherdwarf
Fish Cleaner: Novice Weaver, Clothier, Butcher, Tanner, Leatherworker, and Fish Cleaner

One of these will be randomly flagged as Expedition Leader at the start. The default embark value for a custom embark is 1274: 974 in pre-chosen goods and 300 unassigned. The Play Now! embark only uses 1038 points. While a Play Now! embark is no more doomed than any other embark, it is always better to Prepare Carefully once you know what you're doing with the set up of an early fort.

I hope the formatting is nice and fucked up.

Funnily enough, most roguelikes bore me to death because they're all just big ol' static dungeons and you can't even amass a merry band of companions in a dynamic world. CDDA came close but shat the bed in regards to NPCs and factions, so DF is all I have that scratches that itch. Mount and Blade and Skyrim with the right mods come close though. Maybe Kenshi if it ever gets finished.

You could bring a farmer/herbalist, but you're bottlenecking yourself if you do. I don't get /dfg/'s fetish with concentrating same-industry labors on dwarves, it's inefficient and slows production and skill gain. Using the herbalist as an example, if he's planting fields then he's not gather plants and vice versa, which is a significant bottleneck for seasonal plants, and slows down skill gain for both jobs leading to lower yields for a longer time. It makes more sense to combine them with valuable moodable skills (a smithing skill or gem setting is a good choice) that won't have much uptime early in your fort while you're more focused on building up the larder.
That wasn't the point, though. Having an herbalist on hand at the beginning of the fort gives you breathing room to design and plan instead of feeling compelled to plop down a farm plot on the first patch of subterranean dirt you dig into. You see so many screenshots of forts with farms right by the front door. On top of that, herbalism skills up a lot faster than farming in biomes that support it, so you not only get early drink security, but faster value gain. And it's a lot easier to phase out an herbalism industry as your fort design fills out than it is to move a mature farming industry. Herbalists are a really flexible tool for early forts, and can even replace farming entirely in some cases.

You're the elephant? You'll want quantity, not quality, then. Not many things that are still going to be standing after an elephant man kicks them. You might try finding a flock of ravens or something. Sneak up, grapple one, and kick it in the neck. There used to be an exploitable bug that hitting a very small body part with something that has a very large contact area would always glance away. If it's not fixed you might be able to train up kicking that way.

>>

Bitches.
Seriously, what you got there is some kind of superdog, and you need to breed it until all the dogs in the world are descended from that dog.
>>
>>170434767
a statue of this dog must be erected in its honor

engravings all over your fortress of the dogs actions

And an anvil, if there's a chance the merchants will have trouble getting one to you. And possibly some wood if there are no trees, and possibly some seeds and food/drinks if you're embarking in a particularly inhospitable place.

Where's the update

Here is the chamber of Èrithstagshil, the great war dog, slayer of giants!

I'm going to put the engraving later and maybe change the columns for gold or something when I can

>bringing a broker, a doctor, a woodcutter
>carpenter and woodcutter are the same dwarf
>cook and brewer are the same dwarf
>putting 1 or 2 points in any skill at all

You shouldn't be chiding anyone for inefficiency.

cringe
epic fail

>>170441115
Those are to cover the basic for everything you really need with the few dwarf you have in the early game, you need to get shit done early on, you don't really need to specialize your dwarfs until your second or third wave depending on how many you get

Just signed up for the basic course of DF at my University.
They hold a advanced class after the basic with test and all and summary,

it cost me 300 bucks, was i ripped off?

heard other have gotten it for cheaper.
>>
>>170443021
Oh wow that's actually a great price.
I paid 400 for my basic course and even that was a lowered price because I sucked the lecturer off.
What uni are you going to for such a low price?

University of Florida

We are already 20 people on.
Had to move to a larger classroom because it was such a large interest for it

You get appraiser for free just by opening the trade screen for the first time each season. 1 point in doctor skills will have a negligible effect on their work, if they even get to use those skills before they rust. If they do, then something has gone really bad really early and you would've been better off spending those points on a soldier to stop the problem. Woodcutter can be put on any dwarf after embark without wasting points on it. It doesn't benefit from skill beyond the time it takes to do the job. All of those are literally wasted points.
Putting 1 or 2 levels of a skill on a dwarf is almost as bad, though. Each skill level in DF takes more exp than the previous one to advance. The value in skills bought at embark is in the higher skill levels you purchase, as they each save you more time and gain you more value than the prior one. Buying one level in a skill barely helps any at all over just enabling the labor on an unskilled dwarf at embark; you'll get that level with nearly no effort on your part or your dwarf's anyway. This is doubly true for skills like woodcutter or medical skills which gain only a marginal benefit over a dabbler even at high skill levels. It's a really inefficient use of points.

Mechanics are nice if you're like me and embark on areas where traps, pumps, and wells are pretty essential.

Other than that, I don't see how that setup is more efficient outside of giving the miners engraving. Med skills aren't that important, and if your early dorfs get hurt you can just enable the skills on a skilless dorf. Giving carpenters and masons extra skills is worthless, since you should be having at lease masons running nonstop and carpenters running whenever there's wood. Trade skills are useless, you'll get a migrant wave before the first caravan, and I have never ever ran out of food and booze before the first migrant wave either, so cook+brewer is non-essential.
