I spent too much time on my walls to give them up, and like my shaded ground tiles and whatnot so I use this but I replaced my old vorpal cornerclipped upscale of the curses_640x300.png tileset with the non-wall tiles from dePlatino's.

DF is to graphics what assembly is to visual coding. Shit like Scratch or LEGO programming might be nice to look at and intuitive, but it quickly becomes inefficient, slow and irritating. I'm an ASCII tileset player myself, but not because I think it's inherently superior, but because I prefer the aesthetic. That said, there's a good argument for graphics, and it goes directly contrary to your claim.
With a single tileset you're more greatly limited in the amount of information you can convey to the player. The more possible unique tiles, the more potential to present information. By default, graphical tilesets give MORE detail than ASCII, not less. The mere fact that graphical tiles attempt to be visually isomorphic to the thing they're representing reinforces this feature. ASCII tilesets, on the other hand, give very little detail, and make little or no attempt at resemblance to thing they represent, relying on the players' imaginations to furnish the details. It's disingenuous at the very least to claim that ASCII tilesets paint a more detailed landscape. You and I are doing that, at the expense of a greater degree of information being visually apparent.

With every graphical tileset I've ever used, I have always seen more repeats than I have with ASCII. ASCII has just tons of symbols to use by default: capitals and lower case, special symbols and even diacritic, as well as coloring them a whole 256 colors each, with the letter itself having a different possible color than the background, which could indicate something in of itself.
And then there is the elephant in the room. The ASCII tileset is a prominent part of DF not because it's useful, not because it's particularly beautiful, but because it's traditional. The ASCII tileset allows for numerous injokes and little gaffes that aren't readily apparent to the usual person exactly because of the lack of visual cues. It's a basic elitist filter, but an effective one. It doesn't inherently benefit gameplay itself, but it benefits the culture surrounding it and all its content.
You wouldn't be able to do pic related with Phoebus.

Can you give an example? I've used quite a few of them myself and I can't think of any. I also can't think of any reason; graphical tilesets use a tileset with the same properties and number of tiles as any ASCII tileset, with an additional arbitrary number of unique tiles for creatures. Many graphical tilesets change the default tile for some walls, but I can't think of any that change anything else other than that and unique creature sprites.

I agree with the second part of your post, in principle at least. I don't know that a pleb filter is a very helpful thing for a game that runs on donations.

It was more to a point I forgot to make cause I got caught up doodling an adventurer with their guts trailing as they run from some soldiers and a couple beak dogs while dodging bolts.

Ideally people would at least get a basic familiarity with ascii and how it works, rather than only learning how to see things through the frame of a single graphics set.

If more of them tried to share some sort of consistency it would be nice, but most of that which you find is just "Phoebus/Ironhand/Mayday did it this way, so that's how I'm going to do it" and then you end up with two extremes, GemSet which had the goal of using a graphic or override for every single tile displayed at any time, and CLA which tries to make graphics as ASCII like as possible.

When I tried to make some creature graphics I went with the latter approach, which is the only bit of my older graphics fucking around that I remain proud of.

I should redo those with the cleaner vector tiles as a basis actually.

I get your point. I agree that it's good for new players to learn ASCII, but a lot of them simply won't. It's easy for us to say "good, fuck those guys they can't join my club" but I don't think it's good for DF or its community. There are people picking up DF for the first time who have never played a 16bit game, much less a fully abstracted autism simulator. That's only going to be the case more and more as time goes on. I grew up playing roguelikes, text adventures, MUDs, etc, so jumping into an ASCII game is second nature to me. Post-millenials by and large won't have that going for them, and DF will wither on the vine if its niche becomes restricted to 40-and-50-somethings.
As for consistency, I don't think that's desirable at all. Aesthetics and art are all about preference and creativity. I say the more the merrier. It really goes against the imagination argument to say that every artist who makes a crundle tile ought to interpret it the same way. I hope more and more divergent sets are released in the coming years. I may not use them or know what I'm looking at when screenshots are posted, but it can't be a bad thing for there to be more creative interpretation of the content of a procedural story generator.

I just picked up Dwarf Fortress a couple of days ago. I've tried it before and the ASCII hell was completely daunting and I couldn't make heads or tails of anything and just gave up (This isn't my usual means of doing things but the ASCII was just too much and I had no idea what was happening). Recently I learned that the game could be played with tilesets and programs that aid in game management, so I grabbed a starter kit and tried once more to play Dwarf Fortress. This time around, I could actually tell what everything was much more clearly (before I gave up on ASCII I did manage to pick up on what a few things were but I was still really clueless). After a few hours of fiddling with the interface (shits not easy when you're used to much more simple menus) I constructed a decent base with workshops, a mine, and even individual bedrooms (though some migrants just arrived and I'll need to make some more beds).

What i'm getting at, is that I don't think I ever would have managed to get into DF if it weren't for a tileset. I DO intend to, after I learn the game a little more and after I finally loose this game (I come from Dark Souls and am quite aware that loosing is fun), try the newest version in it's full ASCII glory to try and learn it. Because I feel like a lot of the underlying DF culture lays in the ASCII wastes and I intend to learn to read this elder script.

Scrwed around in adventure mode for a few months, meaning when I started the fort it was already in the middle of autumn. This means you gotta wait for spring to restart the cycle before your fort can get migrants. I started expanding in that time, leading to some accidents involving a GCS and some crundles, resulting in a couple of deaths after the first migrant wave, which meant my fort didn't attract any migrants at all next time (I thought the first 2 waves were always hardcoded to have a few? I guess that goes out the window if you fuck up the cycle like I did).

The only thing that's a pain in the ass is managing labors in vanilla with a large fort, especially once you start making dedicated military squads. I have no idea how you'd keep track of everything unless you were taking notes or something. Or, y'know, just use manipulator. I really have no idea why Toady hasn't made a labor management screen for vanilla. It could even be an addendum to the existing work order management screen where you say, "keep 3 dwarves assigned to stonecrafting" or whatever, and the manager takes care of it for you.

There's a way to play the latest version in 32-bit with DT, though, so if you don't give a shit about 64-bit then you can still use it.

The UI isn't hard it's just initially intimidating.

People say the game is hard to get into because your first few fortresses will get wrecked pretty soon...as if this is some kind of negative.

The best part of the game is the spontaneous misery lurking around every corner. Even your first fort that starves to death after a sober tantrum spiral is a way more fun experience than most games can offer.

You can do weapons in silver, and for a few it's the optimum vanilla choice. Regardless, it also appears that he put a whole bunch of dwarves to work on the forges making furniture and crafts, maybe even all of them considering that blacksmith and metalcrafter artifacts are all he has. Assigning a breastplate and chainmail shirt should work so long as you have enough of them. If they equipped their breastplates first that may be the issue, try removing them from the uniform and then adding them back once everyone is wearing a chain shirt.

Sometimes you get an NPC with a cool backstory like this.

In this case, it's a vampire named Ekul Patternwoman, born in the year of 95 (current year is 250).

She got married to some literally-who when she was as young as 13, and during the very same year, she also became lady of her hometown, with the full support of the people.

In the year of 127, Ekul, now at the age of 32, participated in a military campaign against one of the neighbouring goblin civs. In a battle, she found herself in a duel against Ngoso Knotfiends, an elf raised by the goblins. While Ekul lost the duel, she got away with some wounds in her arm and leg.

Four years later, Ekul profaned the temple in her hometown, for unknown reasons. Consequenty, she was cursed by the gods and ended up as a vampire.

Since then, she's led a nomadic life. Moving from town to town, leaving hundreds of dead townspeople in her path.

She was last seen in the town of Quillperplexed, which is where I'll start my search.

Toady One has said that the worldgen battles work that way. Basically both armies forming a line and fighting one-on-one until one is eradicated. I don't know if the duels run on the same combat sim as the rest of the game, but I suppose it's plausible. Without the moving around and line of sight and all that stuff, it's just a long series of attack, dodge and parry rolls. That's not too computationally expensive.

Depends.

I'd recommend doing at least 150 years minimum so there's time for new generations to grow and the first dwarves to die, but even that is up to personal preference. The longer you wait, the farther civilized people spread, and more megabeasts they kill. And with larger words, running the worldgen for longer than a few hundred years is unreasonably slow.

Grass doesn't disappear in the winter, you don't have to bring your animals in. It's pretty rare for an embark to get cold enough to start damaging tissues unless you deliberately created your world generate environments like that.

They pretty frequently do actually. When I check I find dwarves are black or brown more often than not since there's only one or two shades of white among dozens of possible choices.

It's cool though that members of the same civ will tend to have similar physical characteristics. You can tell where someone is from, broadly, based on what they look like and can even identify mixed race people by watching for the common markers from different civs. It just has no effect on their actual statlines and so has no effect on the game at all besides whatever the player imagines it to.

When you make an adventurer, you'll notice that you get the option to randomize (respecting local population variation) or fully randomize and get pretty different results.

they are the one reason that I hesitate to replay Morrowind, even though I really want to.

they appear literally everywhere, even in the settlements, and trigger the battle music. the battle music is good, but I eventually grew to hate it, simply because of the cliff racers. they also made these really annoying sounds.

unless you had good projectile based magic or a bow, you also had to wait for them to slowly descend on you before you could actually killed them. this, along with the frustrating combat system of Morrowind (everything is hard as fuck to hit), made the battles with them extremely tiresome. sometimes, you'd kill one, only to have another of the fuckers appear at random, and thus having to start all over again.

My human civ isn't doing too great.

The mead hall in my home village had a law-giver in it, suggesting that we don't have any real capital anymore.

Additionally, all other hamlets I've visited so far have had bandit leaders in charge of them. They are polite when you talk to them in the meadhalls, but if you run into them on patrols, they'll attack you on sight.

Katanas are pretty rare, and most of them you find are cheap replicas. Besides, you find tons of european historical weapons/replicas as well.
Trenchcoats are common IRL, and have nothing to do with anime.
Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal recreational drug in the US, and if you live in an urban area you've always got literal pounds of it within a mile radius either being carried on the person or in the homes of thousands of people.
