You can't do that anymore.
>>
>>170002620
You need to become swole

The best way is to start with high attributes and grind skills to legendary until you reach the attribute cap, for strength specially.

If that's not enough you need to alter your attributes with dfhack

>>
>>170003276
Well, you need really high stats, best way would be to start as a demigod and put all your points into combat skills, especially strength.

Then you need to train your skills to reach the attribute cap, this can take a long time, the best skills to train, are fighting skills (wrestling, fighting, weapon skills), especially wrestling

If you reach max attributes and you still can't punch people's head off, then you have to use dfhack to modify your attributes.

Your heavily modded game and superadventurers aren't exactly a benchmark for discussion of normal gameplay. Not that there's anything wrong with it, of course, but you're barely playing the same game as "how do I punch a head off"anon, and your gameplay experience doesn't translate well into advice for people playing anywhere in the neighborhood of vanilla.

Huh, this is strange.

So apparently, this coin was minted by a civ called "Mon Uzin", supposedly during a period of "no rule".

Satrangely enough, it has the symbol of a performer band on it.

Then, I looked it up in the legends, and guess what: Mon Uzin is actually the untranslated name of the performer band whose symbol was on the coin. The performer band actually minted the coin themselves.

That's fucking weird. It might require some more digging into.

Well played.
>>
>>170010492
That's actually exactly what I was going for.

I wanted to write a story that was as immersive as possible without resorting to roleplaying. I wanted to show all the complexity in the features that the game has, without spreading possible misinfo by making up things that doesn't actually happen.

The starting point was of course as generic as can be (since adventurers don't have backstorys, and I didn't want to roleplay one). From there, however, it developed as I encountered new actors (i.e. the first night troll, the dead child, my companion and his wife, etc), each with their own stories which were given a place in the log.

The most important thing was to play the game with the naive eyes of a first time player. After learning the game, we autistically learn to see the game mechanics, rather than the exciting events which actually take place in the world. Describing the naive impression of what appears to take place in the world, but with a firm understanding of the mechanics, was pretty central.

Like I said, though, I might pick it up again soon. I might have to practice my drawing a bit beforehand though, since I may have grown too used to drawing those silly frowning characters.
>>
k haven't touched the game since late 2015/early 2016, I know there haven't been any major updates outside of 64 bit support (yay, hopefully fps death comes much slower to my forts), but can someone give me a quick rundown on the unreleased stuff he's worked on since then?
>>
>>170012796
Yeah, those had a similar sort of appeal as honestanon did in that sense.

I've gotten better at seeing what is going on without even thinking about the mechanics since I started scripting though, since I started to internalize my knowledge of what is going on without needing to really think of it unless asked or trying to do a specific thing with scripts/raws.

DF offers cutomizable tilesets, you can make it as comfy as rimjob pretty easily.

DF offers a lot more depth and interesting encounters than Rimworld, plus Rimworld costs $30, so I personally never really got into it.
>>
>>170028682
Ill try it with a tileset until I at least know how to play I guess. late game rimworld is broken but I still have a base creating crave.

LNP really isn't all that useful for tilesets honestly. Changing a tileset is as simple as copying it into the right directory and changing a line in a .txt file. LNP might be causing your bug too.

I like CLA, but I think of it more as a graphics set for people who already know ASCII than as a tool for learning ASCII for graphics players. For most of the sprites they don't look much more like the creature they represent than a letter does at normal gameplay resolution. If you already know you're looking at a wombat then you'll recognize a brown w with a little face on it as a wombat, but if you don't then you just get the vague impression that you're looking at an animal of some sort, which is the same place you'd be with a standard ASCII tileset.

Density is an important factor for stopping blunt damage. Any metal source of edge damage will go right through it, though. Your dwarf would also need to be strong as shit or a high level armor user to get around in it at a reasonable speed. It's kind of moot point, though, as you can't make platinum armor normally without a strange mood or modding.

Except you know that you're looking at an animal that begins with "w" and is small and brown, no wings and it looks friendly, hmmm, must be a wombat, while the C hunched over there with an angry look and clenched fist in a kinda brownish yellow or bronze color, well, must be a bronze colossus huh?

Some of them are hard to figure out, but most of them contain much more information than "a vaguely four legged shaped blob of grey and white with eyes and uh, a tail?" tile does.

I agree that the default size is more difficult though, it's why I did the super upscale effort a while back, 18x18 vs 36x54 is a huge difference.

>>170081948
Not disagreeing with you, but just so it's been said: you're still required to actually know all the animals and their _english_ name.
That doesn't apply to everyone.
So for some people, "a vaguely quadruped shaped thing" might contain more information than "a grey 'm' that looks like nothing I know"
>>
>>170081948
>most of them contain much more information than...
They really don't. The first letter of the animal is the only information you get over a graphical tileset, and any ASCII tileset will give you that as well. You would have to already have a decent amount of knowledge about the games wildlife to be able to correctly guess an animal based only on its CLA sprite (I've played for years and used CLA a lot and I don't know what half the animals in that pic are), and you'll probably still be loo(k)ing at them or checking the units list to make sure anyway, and all that applies to any other graphics set.
I picked wombats deliberately, because wolverines also use a brown w as their tile, spawn in the same biomes, and both spawn singly. I don't believe that you believe many players regardless of experience or whether they're going graphics->ASCII or vice versa are going to tell them apart on sight in an ASCII set or CLA. Most players will have to check, at least while their fort is young, to confirm the identity of most creatures in most tilesets.
As I said, I like CLA. It's dishonest to pretend it's an ASCII training tool, though, at least not anymore than any straight ASCII tileset.

First, dropping woodcutter and appraiser entirely is a good plan. You get appraiser for free just by looking in the trade depot, and woodcutter hardly benefits from extra skill at all, and can't even be enabled at the same time as mining. I would recommend taking smiths for a chance at good early moods, architect because it trains slow as fuck, maybe herbalist( to give you more time to establish farming industry) or cooking (because it adds a ton of early value/low effort trade goods) over brewing, which doesn't depend on skill for quality. Ideally you would do all of that and just drop some miners; it trains quickly and you'll have plenty of useless migrants to enlist in you miner corp. I like taking two military dwarves to jumpstart my militia and give my smiths a reason to exist.
>>
I hope Toady reenables the economy soon, it was always incredible how fast forts go to shit after it takes effect. The first time it happened to me I had every dwarf in a 3x3 masterwork engraved bedroom with masterwork furniture and personal dining areas. Suddenly everyone is homeless and miserable so I build cheap tenements in clay near the surface that are filled with violence and crime. Has there been any other game where they had to disable features because they were so realistic it made the game unfun?

It was disabled because it was literally broken. For example, Legendary dwarves were exempt from the economy so they didn't need to get any money but their kids (who use their parents wealth) ended up deeply in debt and miserable. In order to make money all dwarves need to work but in actual play you'll only need a small number of dwarves doing work means you'll have dozens of unhappy unemployed dwarves.

I enjoyed them both for different reasons, dungeon meshi is the first manga to properly scratch the dwarf itch I have, and berserk is great for it's super intriguing story.

Goblin slayer was cool, but I'm not sold on whether it's actually great yet. The rape scenes were overdone and just made me feel like the author was trying too hard to make stuff gritty and dark.

Now to stay on topic, What are the odds that we one day get adaptations of Dwarf Fortress stories into mainstream media, either through books, films, tv series, or whatever. I feel like there is serious bank to be made with the source material, for example a miniseries following a band of dwarves setting up a colony, with various arcs for werebeast attacks and epidemic, industry and war with the goblins, digging the depths and taming the caverns, political intrigue and titan/necromancer attacks, and finally finishing with digging to hell and the whole fort being destroyed in a horrific orgy of death

the game has no goal, so you need to create your own. it can be a comfy game about building and management, there is also a lot of projects of various levels of difficulty you can achieve
you can't play this game with the mindset that you just want to "win", since there is no win condition and survival is generally quite easy. be creative, make something nice. the game's complexity allows for a lot of variation and thus replayability.
each fortress will be different, a lot of them will make for compelling stories

Yeah it's currently a fairly classic dungeon crawl party thing going on right now. It's still pretty dark in parts, but the author probably didn't feel the need to go as ham with the edgy stuff. Nowhere near ebin funny xD adventure tier, but just a little less fucked up.

I'm gonna keep reading more because I like the premise and can see theres a lot of potential, than because what I read so far is really good. Also a pet peeve of mine is that all the women look like typical anime grills, and stick out like a sore thumb compared to the monsters and goblin slayer's design. It's probably on purpose but still.

Everything I hear about this mango make it sound worse every time somehow. Like the author roasting common RPG tropes by having side characters murderraped to make GS seem smarter, then simultaneously applying a different bullshit protag logic to him practically warping the established rules just to make him right. That's just edgy wank material in every way imaginable.

Fair enough, it'll always be there if it starts picking up and getting great.

I'm personally very hyped about the upcoming Boatmurdered manga, and the subsequent 12 season anime adaptation, which will lead to a 3-part game series with actual cut scenes from the anime.

Time slows, all the distraction and chaos of battle fades. There is only your foes, their weapons, you, and your weapons. Their attacks become obvious before they even swing and are effortless to avoid. And you can see where they are vulnerable to your attacks and simply place your weapon there as a matter of course. Anonymity and lack of interest I guess. Succession forts are organized affairs, and they usually recruit players from a subforum where people go specifically looking for that sort of thing. It's hard to organize anonymous people anonymously, and most of us are here because we're already playing DF and have our own things going on.
There are succession forts available to play all the time on bay12 anyway. Not to say we couldn't have one actually happen, but this isn't the ideal place for it.

I never bring miners on embark. It seems to me that they train up fast enough from scratch. Woodcutter and appraiser are even more pointless. You don't quite necessarily get free appraiser just for looking at the trade screen the first time, but the only time I've seen it not happen is with the first elven caravan when I was using a new broker who hadn't seen anything else. Unless you're on a very small or inhospitable embark bringing an herbalist is mostly or entirely unnecessary. Also, if you're trying to max out your embark point value, remember to switch out finished goods for the raw materials instead, for example bringing four logs instead of a stepladder and three buckets, or nine thread instead of three bags, three ropes, and three cloth, or nine bronze bars, nine charcoal, an anvil and a fire-safe stone(optional) instead of seven bronze picks and two bronze axes. So long as you have the time and ability to build the appropriate workshop you'll get the same result, plus a little extra chance to train skills and a chance for better than base quality goods for less embark cost. The anvil is the only part where there's much question of whether it's worth it or not, but if you're thinking of having all your dwarves as miners it'd probably be worthwhile. It's easy enough to calculate anyway.

The amount of appraiser xp you get is proportional to the number of items being traded in the depot. Even you if you don't bring anything at all to trade yourself, just looking at the dwarven caravan's first haul is enough to get adequate or better, and nothing above novice makes any difference at all. Since dwarves are the first caravan you see most of the time it applies as a general rule. If you're not embarking in spring or summer you might see elves first, which could have the effect you describe since they hardly bring anything at all on their first trip. Just sending abunch of your own junk to the depot can make up for it, though.

15th of Granite, 100

My name is Mete Lasodukor.

I was born and raised in the town of Medianba. Despite its township status, it holds only a peripheral role in the great nation of The Silken Empire. It has a humble population of 114, making it the 6th smallest town in the civilized world. Some squatters are also believed to have taken refuge in the catacombs beneath the old cathedral.

As of today, the 15th of Granite, I was accepted as a hearthsperon under lady Hode Pestratthel. From this day on, it is my duty to protect the town from any threat, be it beasts or bandits.

I also received my first task, namely to seek out and kill Ayanu Abysstomb the night freak. I am to travel to the creature's lair, "Umbratunnel", approximately half a day north of the town.

After a rather uneventful journey through the mire that bordered to the town, I finally reached the lair of the night freak. Bones layed scattered on the floor, supposedly belonging to the ill-fated Nithim Buquizemel, a girl of merely six years who was snatched away from her parents' village back in 85.

I didn't get to explore the lair for too long before the night freak pounced me. By swiftly stabbing one of his kneecaps, I managed to incapacitate him, revealing his neck and allowing me to quickly end the fight.

Examining his corpse, I've managed to make a schematic sketch for future studies (see the attached illustration). I've also collected his skull and some of his fur as samples. Before leaving the site, I decided to also collect the bones of the unfortunate child. Hopefully, I can get back to the town before sunset.

Last night, I failed to make it back to the town before sunset. Instead, I was forced to seek refuge in a nearby hamlet. The lady of the local mead hall granted me permission to stay there for the night.

Before I went to sleep, I examined a copper coin which I had found just before I left the lair.

The coin had been issued under our great law-giver Bemta Ostriatek, who have ruled our nation since 80. This means that the coin may very well have belonged to the unfortunate child, whose bones I found in the lair. I've attached a sketch of the coin in question.

I will now return to my bonnie town Medianba, and report back to lady Hode. After that, I intend to bury the bones of the child in the catacombs there.

After reporting the killing of the night freak to Hode, I immediatly went to bury the bones of the child.

In order to reach the local catacombs, I had to go through the ruins of the old chathedral, "The Sanctum of Focus". The ruins measure about 13x30 urists, and holds an impressive water basin on the bottom floor.

In the catacombs themselves, there are numerous vast corridors, lines with niches holding bones on the deceased. Some larger rooms house coffins for the more affluent elements of Medianba.

I happened upon several of the aforementioned squatters when I visited the catacombs. Contrary to what I've heard about similar bands in other cities, these squatters were not organised under any leader. Some of them even begged me to bring them along on my journeys.

After looking around for a while, I found a room suitable for burying poor Nithim. In front of her remains, I placed the copper coin which had supposedly once belonged to her.

After disposing of such a fearsome beast, one'd think I was entitled some rest. My next step will probably be to take a well earned vacation in one of the lerger cities of the realm.

Since my last journal entry, I've begun travelling towards the larger cities of the realm. My first stop was The Sweetness of Honey, the tavern in Medianba.

There I met an adventurer under the name Citu Roniksenre. He had come from the neighbouring realm of The Empire of Tunnels. He agreed to accompany me on my journey, and we then set off toward Nacuquemer together.

So far, we've reached the beaches of The Water of Miring. Normally, we'd have a great view of the surrounding bay, but sadly, the ocean is currently filled with the thickest mist. We recently passed through a small village, but it was mostly abandoned, and had no administrative center.

Our curent plan for the journey is to first proceed to Nacuquemer, and then take the road toward Cerumizbo from there. According to rumours, Cerumizbo is the seventh largest settlement in the known world, and has a huge library containing a vast collection of writings.

The journey to Nacuquemer was rather uneventful, and by the sunset of the 18th of Granite, I entered the town.

Despite being relatively young, being founded in 88, the town had a pretty lively centre. It did, however, lack some important facilities. It didn't have any tavern, and when I arrived at the keep, I was suprised to see it uninhabited. After asking around, it became clear that the town didn't have any organised government. It was supposedly run by The Glacial Coalition, a subsidiary of The Silken Empire, but nowhere in the town was I able to find any representative of this group.

The local temple was richly engraved with pictures depicting historical events and diverse creatures. I chose to sketch two of them down and attach them in the journal.

Since there isn't too much to do in this town, I and Citu will soon depart for Cerumizbo.

Yesterday, by the late afternoon, we reached Cerumizbo, the largest townin the realm and the seventh largest town in the known world. We were surprised to find most of it abandoned as we arrived. Of the once vast population, only about 200 inhabitants remain. Some of the abandoned buildings are already getting reclaimed by nature.

As empty as it is, the cityscape is still pretty vast, and it took a while for me to sketch up a map of the city (see the attachment).

We also found the rumoured library. Unlike the rest of the town, it's very lively, as it's being frequented by scholars from all over the world. The building is three floors high, and measures at least 30 urists in length. Strangely enough, it's only two walkable urists wide inside, meaning that one has to be good at elbowing one's way forth when exploring it.

I haven't explored their rich archive yet, but that's my next step. The books might have something to teach me about the history of the realm.

The books yielded no new information on the history of my realm, although there were some interesting manuals and essays. After skimming through the most important works, Citu and I decided to travel westward and pay a visit to his home in the hamlet Idemjirdo.

On the journey, we were ambushed by a troll, which Citu managed to kill with a halberd slash through its head. We identified the corpse as Amro Begundreamed, a dangerous beast known to have perpetrated several raids on the nearby hamlets.

After two days of travelling, we arrived at Idemjirdo at sunset. We immediately sought out the cabin where Citu's loving wife, Epo Dalicmori, stayed. Epo shared the cabin with several other villagers, and they all agreed to let Citu and I stay for the night.

When I passed the time in Epo's cabin, I noticed an engraving on my breastplate. I picked up the breastplate in the night freak lair at the beginning of my adventure, but didn't pay much attention to it until now. The engraving depicted the coronation of Obi Tubbuttered, the founding mother of our nation, back in year 2. When I get the time, I must remember to pay my respects to her grave.

Citu and Epo's hamlet is really beautiful, but I can't stay for too long. My vacation is nearing its end, and it's about time for me to return into the service of lady Hode back home. Citu and I have decided to part ways, so before I return back home, it'd be wise to look for a new travelling companion at the nearby town.

Leaving Citu and his wife in the hamlet of Idemjirdo, I promptly travelled to the closest town, Devsemidla. In the tongue of humans, the name roughly translates to "Confuseangel".

As I closed in on the town, the view quickly became dominated by a massive temple, measuring at least 20x30 urists, and covered in exquisite engravings. The size of the temple led me to expect an equally impressive town, but as I arrived, I was surprised to find it deserted and in ruins.

As I entered the remains of the old keep, I encountered a small group of squatters who called themselves "The Sunny Incidents", and were led by the captain Das Anlarthina. From the four squatters, I learned about the fate of the town. Originally built in year 3, it had been brought to ruin after a series of attacks by the plains titan "Corud" in year 18. Many years later, Das, who was then a war veteran of The Helpful Kingdoms, defected from his nation and claimed the ruined town as his own. The other squatters had joined up with him later.

One of the squatters, the swordswoman Aditha Ecivafice, longed for adventures and agreed to follow me back to Medianba.

And so, the time has finally come for me to return to my realm, The Silken Empires.

It's actually very hard if not impossible to drown in magma, since it's much more dense than humans are

If you wanna go the realistic route. You'd probably die of asphyxiation and poisoning from inhaling lethal fumes or die from spontaneously combusting into flames and having your flesh broil just by being close enough to it before ever having the chance to come in direct contact with the magma itself.

Not sure its even physically possible unless you were to throw yourself down an active volcano from a helicopter.

Lead won't work. The melting point is too low, you can't secure it to your body. Iron actually works reasonably well. It has a lower density than lead, but it's magma-safe, and still heavier than stone.

Ideally, you'd have tungsten (aka. wolfram). With density of 19.25 g/cm^3 and melting point of whopping 3695 K, it's your absolute best option for volcano diving weights. It's somewhat expensive, but its trade isn't controlled like with uranium. You can get it from Amazon.

some millions, you'd have to build a supercomputer and pay a lot of money for experienced computer programmers and scientists to make the game run on it, even then the game would run like trash, because supercomputers are shit for real time coordinated computing, because speed of light is too slow
>>
>>170159370
it wouldn't be the same since graphics would heavily reduce the game's modability
it will also never happen since there just would be too much stuff to animate, the game is far too complex for 3d animated graphics that don't look like absolute garbage

>>
>>170159370
Around the same ballpark as generic AAA games costs, I'd wager. It's a complex game, but any game engine is a complex piece of software. There are some fairly fundamental design problems - like dealing with all the random generation, and determining just what kind of three-dimensional space things are supposed to occupy - but it shouldn't be impossible for a team of engineers to duplicate the gameplay.

Your real problems start when Toady One updates his version. There are upsides to working with ASCII graphics, and one of those is that you don't need to give any thought to graphical assets when adding things like procedurally generated demons and multitile trees.

Multithreading is kind of irrelevant for the graphics since graphics cards are already massively parallel. Anyway the graphics of DF probably wouldn't be too cutting edge with crazy shaders and whatever (see Slaves to Armok 1). So it wouldn't be too taxing. It's just a matter of coding all the models or procedural modeling code.
>>
>>170160260
that's assuming those graphics would run on the gpu, not the cpu (gpu programming is fucking hard, even more for DF) and even then you can't offload all the graphics processing to the gpu, even the last 1% would make the game run sower

Stuff like cults and all that would also add fun to the game imo.

What I was doing was metairony, using words for other than their literal intent by using them for other than their literal intent is either nonsense or literal in the vast majority of cases.

Shouting "Purple sack of cocks" and claiming I meant "Your mother is a wonderful woman" by being metaironic only works retroactively, and is generally absurd at best, so if you shouted "purple sack of cocks" and tried to be ironic when you weren't actually talking about a purple sack of cocks //OR// implying something is one, then you're making a non sequitur as it no longer has any connection to the original statement or an ironic interpretation thereof.

WHAT ARE SOME COOL MODS? WHERE ARE ALL THE MODS? This game would be perfect to mod. What are the mod limitations? Can I make an underwater world, civilization, fort, adventurer? Can you make machine mods, 'tech' mods, rogue-like mods, war mods.... you know, anything that a depth of code access allows?
Toady should probably work with a team to transform the game as-is into a transparent beautiful majestic moddifiable masterpiece.

That way you have two parallel builds, the mod community of developers ((an ecology, network)) and the official development path of Toady ((linear chaos, like a hurricane)) who, thanks to the knowledge gained from rebuilding it and working with a team, plus the much easier to work with new build, releases updates in a third of the usual time.

It's not quite moddable enough, you can do lots of interesting stuff with syndromes and secretions and tissue layers (all part of making creatures) but you can't modify the way sites like towns or fortresses generate, or add new buildings or anything like that. You can add more languages, set speech patterns for races, there's a lot you can modify but it's just frustratingly not enough to fundamentally change the way the game plays.

Seems pretty modable to me. You could genetically engineer anything... Probably build custom workshops, right? Even have projectiles that work by invocation and a specific skill... MAGIC MISSILE.

I've seen things you wouldn't believe... multiplayer fort mode, actually interesting expansions in workshops, unique map gens....
I think the only "problem" is you have to do shit 'indirectly', and work with the system that exists to do what you want it to... the thing is though, there doesn't seem to actually be many restrictions. You can already change map gen within the game, and make a super volcano world for instance. You can give skills, raws, to members that cause them to do what you want them to...
That one dude in this thread that gave humans discipline for instance, so that they built a fucking empire unlike they usually do.
Or whatever the fuck is leaking precum out of their skin.
I bet 100 different magical slime species could be a fun mod, for instance.

And all we need to do is make it MODULAR.
MODULAR MODS
with DOCUMENTATION for possible mod interactions that are undesirable, so that the player can make the tweaks necessary for it to work.
Anyone know where I can find a compiled list of mods or a modding community ((preferred))

Masterwork looks cool actually. Is there a mod for wall destroying invaders? WYRMS!? The ragtag band of explosion expert gnomes??? Enslaved by ORKZ to destroy a wall and invade your fort?
Actually a desert volcano fort attacked by fremen riding wyrms sounds pretty awesome. I must have enslaved their people or something.

Serious question: Any way to get a fort to run itself while you switch to adventure mode and lead an army to another civ to siege, then return and switch to fort mode again? Man that sounds awesome. I can imagine a big square detailed fort map that transitions to a horizontal macro map of the land between the fort and the place to siege, war drums going as you watch the little icon make its way across, then trumpets when you finally reach it and a switch to an overview of the entrance, defenses, and military as can be seen from scouts while birds chirp in the background (((peace))). Then the final trumpets go full blast as you start the siege.

Oh dear Armok turns out the 4 of the King's children became werebeasts Sheeps His other children all died from being murdered or killed by a bronze colossus. Queen consort's father is a necromancer. Queen consort's Grandmother is the mother of the King.

Hey, becoming a werebeast sounds pretty badass for what it's worth.
>>
>>170216775
Easier if you just use dfhack (and you can instantly smother any "but that's cheaty" ideas in the crib because copying a save is way more so) and run open-legends instead.

I just wanted to avoid the unretire issues, had one where the FBs that had no way of getting topside just appear on the top layers. anyway Copying a save just to export legends is fine. Did use DFhack to export legends.
"Cheaty" that just depends on the person and how its done, plenty of people that abuse other "legit".
>>
>>170219742
Yeah but open-legends works and lets you export stuff too.

Also less amusing than the duplicated fighting yourself thing, but it works right I think: http://pastebin.com/qjmq9T3c

So I killed an FB with dust that rots anything it touches. Thankfully the one guy I sent to deal with it was the only casualty, except...

I left the entrance to that part of the caverns open, and some time after I noticed all the cats flashing with disabilities. Turns out as cats tend too wander the entire map quickly, they all walked through the left-over dust causing all their feet to rot. My fort is full of limbless cats crawling around the place polluting the clean air with their rotstank.

I haven't seen the new fire changes in action so there might be a few dead dwarfs.

This was my first day playing the game. Quite the experience.
>>
I used to play this game all the goddamn time but now I can't get over the hurdle of digging in and building a basic fortress without getting bored to death. Should I be digging into a top layer of soil first or what?

Also, did Toady fix the bug where you can't pit hostiles yet?
>>
>>170228251
I felt the same way until I just bit the bullet and forced myself to start a new fort

Now I'm running a new stronghold on the road to FPS death
>>
How big of a fort could I handle with an i7 intel CPU?

1x1

50 dwarves, maximum in a 1x1 embark

Oh really? Ok, will do that.

>Firebreathing Titan One-eye Squirrel
>Fires everywhere
>All dwarfs that went to fight it died
>Tried to wall in
>2nd wall in worked not without the last but greatest dwarf attempt
The animal trainer was the last one to fight it, firing all the iron bolts he could before using the elephant bone crossbow to try and bash it to death. He was able to block alot of the fire even after becoming badly wounded.
Biggest problem with the beast wasn't the fire or the strength but the boiling blood wounded a lot of the other dwarfs and even the creature itself.

Depends which one you get and how much you overclock it. Caching and memory might matter a lot.
>>
>>170229830
>Depends which one you get

Its an Intel Core i7-7700HQ
>>
>>170229830
Cache width and ram speed matter the most, but that is a nice chip for the game, sadly the multicore doesn't matter atm.
>>
>>170229928
I have a i7 6700k @ 4.4 ghz. Mainly got this CPU just because of DF

You should be fine on a 4x4 though 3x3 would be better be around 3 years for fps death though. That's if your running at the base speed.
>>
>>170230827
All right, I see. What if I limit my population to like 70-80?
>>
What the hell processor are you supposed to use?
>>
>>170230948
Should be fine but you'll want to change the settings so in advanced world gen so they can show up at 60 or 70. Need at least 120 for the king to show up or something.
The other thing is make sure you set it so no babies can be born.
Keep the animal population under control and use cages to stop the ones that don't graze. Item count can take away 10 fps or more depending on how much there is.
>>
>>170231151
I'm actually thinking about trying to make a human hamlet based around farming. I figure if I do that, It'll massively cut down on materials being used and I can justify a smaller population.
>>
>>170230827
>3 years for fps death
Jesus man you must have a low threshhold for what qualifies as fps death.

>>170231151
Progress triggers aren't a changeable option in advanced worldgen except for titans, and they default at 50.
>>
>>170232204
<= 20 fps
>>
>>170232542
What are you doing to drop below 20 fps in 3 years?

Well crap, if I disable enough shit to make a thread 4chan starts flickering and going batshit, is it twitching around and freaking out for anyone else or is it just my end?

Newish card and it's only this tab when I fully disable noscript so everything pops up, I can't do the "pick a bunch of fucking flowers or street signs" shit captchas otherwise.

It's just the standard response to every graphical glitch on the internet.
Though people actually believe it

Also Urist needs to drag his ass to the workshop and craft a new thread.

Just use the legacy captcha and type your words like any sane person would. Works with noscript, though I might have had to add some exceptions.
