>>
>>169496512
Downloading what?
If you're the lazy noob pack anon then I urge you to just go ahead and download the latest release and use the quickstart guide on the wiki.
As for me, I've been playing for a little over 2 months now and I still don't use any add-ons whatsoever though I've been thinking about a tileset that changes the colors of the default to one that's a little brighter.
>>
>>169496572
Yes you can, and yes it does.
>>
>>169496423
make a new uniform, add both the shirt and breastplate under (A) for armor, and specify materials on both items with (M) for copper. if it doesnt work, its time to go the extra step and assign them the specific items then. they can wear shirts under breastplates, but they wont do it if you dont specify to replace clothing. however, youll have to assign weapons and all the other armor pieces individually as well.

on the military screen, press (e) to equip, (A) for armor, select specific item, and chose a copper mail shirt. repeat the process for the same dwarf but assign a breastplate this time.

if they still wont grab it, shits bugged and i cant really help
>>
>>169496572
I'm not sure, that's just some of the armor I have in stock.
>>
>>169495083
without LNP you get to play the newest version and don't have to wait until the modders update (they still haven't updated to the new version even though it's been a few months)
you also don't get accustomed to using the rapist as a crutch, and arguably can get more immersed in the game. DFhack and the rapist are the only really useful things in that package honestly, tilesets you can just add manually, especially since they'll always be compatible with the newest version of the game
>>
>>169497007

>>169494918
It really does, but not I don't know what to do.I'm tempted to go back to my hold ways, but then I'd feel like I'm ruining something.

>>
>>169496304
you know you can just add a graphics set manually, right?
>>
>>169497134
yeah but, playing on 0.43.03 instead of .05 isnt that big a deal for me. i also dont think i would be playing the game if there wasnt for the rapist. the labor menu in the game itself would not increase my immersion by any means, it would just put me off.

i believe it really boils down to preference and accessibility. and i like accessibility.
>>
>>169497134
>therapist is just a crutch

I can not believe there are people who legit think like that. Keep up that sense of superiority.
>>
>>169497483
>>169497134
Really all 43.05 has that 43.03 doesn't is 64bit support. So its just 43.03 but with more fps.
>>
>>169497483
If that's your favourite way of playing, that's cool. But the whole delay with the 64bit release kind of put me off mods. The newest patch isn't that big of a deal, but the next patch will be pretty huge, and I really wouldn't want to wait months just so I can play the newest version of the game with rapist.
>>
>>169498225
How much has 64 bit helped in terms of FPS?

>>169498226
Surely it wont take nearly as long when the next update hits. The reason they have taken so long to update now is because of the switch to 64 bit right?
>>
>>169498186
never said it's JUST a crutch, but it's obvious that if you learn to play the game with the rapist you might never be able to play without it. what if the rapist's creator is ever no longer able to keep it up to date? this is quite probable considering how long the game's development will take
in my opinion it's in a newbies best interest to first learn to play without rapist and then try it out if you feel the need for it
>>
>>169498586
>what if the rapist's creator is ever no longer able to keep it up to date?

Good, then I don't want to hear any "rapist when" from you. If you have such great confidence in therapist, then you should be able to wait like good boys forn the release, while the grown ups have fun playing normally.
>>
Does anyone have any worlds that they like to share? My biggest problem in getting back in to this game is that I get stuck in Perfectworld for like a week trying to make something that is insanely dangerous but actually generates.

Does anyone have a world along those lines? I need tons of things to fight, otherwise I just get bored and over-produce craft goods until FPSdeath.
>>
>>169497483

Being unable to play without therapist brings out one of the worst characteristics a DF player could have: not wanting to learn. Every player should be capable to play without it.

And saying it as someone who often uses therapist when it's available, they're some of the worst posters in this general.

Not even arguing against that. You should be able to play without therapist, so you can at least play in the little downtime between therapists updates. But lets not act like somehow people who use therapist are somehow worse posters than the people who act superior because they DONT use therapist.

>>169504698
>But lets not act like somehow people who use therapist are somehow worse posters than the people who act superior because they DONT use therapist.

IIRC, the notion that bogeys would be 1000 big is due to a misinterpretation of the data in gm-editor. Sizes as seen in gm-editor are not the same as the sizes in the raws. They are measured in different units. In raw sizes, most bogeys would be around 10000-30000 big.

Elk birds are probably too small for dwarves to ride, being less than twice the size of an adult dwarf. Dwarven parents probably let their children ride the family elk bird for fun, but they soon grow too big and have to move on to dralthas, which in hindsight are probably the most sensible thing for dwarves to ride (not evil, not carnivorous, etc).

did anyone try sending Toady a list of small changes that would require very little work but make the game more immersive and fun?
like mead for example. why is it two times cheaper than all other alcohol when it requires much more work? historically mead was generally a luxury drink, since it requires a lot of effort to make, it's quite sweet and tasty and can have really high alcohol content.
this would be a very simple fix, just increase the price of mead to that of sunshine or whip wine. it probably still won't make beekeeping very useful, but it at least gives some incentive to actually bother with it.
make mead great again toady

The current DF is a old Honda, it works and do what its suppose to do but struggle and have some mileage

Then you suddenly win the lotto and get this fresh new sport car, its faster and cooler but when it crash its probably going to kill you

>>
>>169524839
multi-threading introduces a type of bug that single threaded programs don't have to worry about: race conditions. basically it's what happens if one cpu gets what it's supposed to do done early and leads to all sorts of confusion.
then consider what happens when DF is generating a world. your one cpu core jumps to 100% use. id DF is using all your threads and an error occurs during a lot of processing, triggering a loop, you might have your pc lag so hard you can't even force close the application
>>
>>169525052
Here's why:

>What is Rimworld?
>An early access single player survival simulation game like Dwarf Fortress /dfg/

They put that in their OP. That's a pretty weird place to put the name of our general, isn't it?

It's obviously a stunt to get noticed more.
>>
has anyone ever been at war with another dorf civ?
how'd it go?
>>
>>169525593
that's pretty low
>>
>>169525664
I doubt it can happen in vanilla, since they have static ethics. Unless you randomise their ethics like with humans, all dwarven civs will agree about everything, meaning no war.
>>
>>169518950
Optimization :^)
>>
>>169525810
Can't ethics shift with time? like if a book with a strong argument against law ends up in the foremost library of a civ can't it lead to that civ having less respect for the law overall?
>>
>>169526027
I don't think books can have a civ-wide effect. I'm not sure, but i think it only affects the individuals who read the books in-game.
>>
>>169525810
some level of randomisation in non-human civ ethics would be nice. it just seems inconsistent that humans are completely random and everyone else is completely fixed
>>
>>169526176
yeah, you're right. it is planned though. I must've remembered reading it here:

>07/25/2015 The work on adventurer composition led into finalizing the new written content generally and making sure I had handled all of the promises I'd made to various people over the last few months. Philosophical study opens up different avenues of discussion that allow people to pass their values to both individual readers and to a lesser extent through the underlying civilization when there's a library with a copy. This doesn't impact specific ethics yet, so you won't have to worry that an elf-written book will make all your dwarves start eating dead bodies, but such a thing is now threatened for a later date by these changes. Poetry written in certain poetic forms can currently spread values before philosophers come up with specific language that can be used in prose, though not all civilizations will have such traditions.

>Generally, there's more information in all of the written content now, and there are more sorts. For instance, after the difficult concept of an alternate history is tackled by historians, they can write books pivoting around the negation of particular events. Mostly it hasn't been earth-shaking... dwarves wondering what life would be like if an antelope man hadn't attacked their town or if a competition had turned out a different way. One historian wrote a book considering how things would have been if the author had remained an architect instead of becoming a historian a decade before. It would be possible to weight the event selected with an importance check, but there are complications as usual. There are also cultural histories, genealogies, atlases, chronicles, the various biographies I mentioned before, etc., which have their proper topics and sometimes some historical events selected, and they occasionally push a value agenda when the author and form is capable of it.
>>
>>169526621
kinda plays into the human/judeo-christian idea of only humans having free will
it would be interesting if the myth generator gave a reason as to why the human civs were so different from each other while other civs were consistent

What's everyones honest opinon on rimworld? I feel like alot of people in this general seem to dislike it. And I cant understand why...
>>
>>169529642
1: toady is a pleb programmer, as evidenced by the few that have seen the code and lived
2: he has never coded multi-threaded code
3: the game would need large portions rewritten to run parallel, this could cause errors

there's BOOKS written on proper multi-threading, it's not simple

World-gen slows down less, so it reaches a higher year in the same time despite having higher populations being tracked.

>>169555826
There's also a bit of text info about it that I don't have handy, but basically I set two worlds with the same seed/settings/etc running for 3 minutes, 32 bit reached year 184 or so, 64 bit reached year 186 with like 3000 higher population, and I ran each version to 300 years, it took about a minute and a half less for 64 bit with something like 3000 or more additional population.

Do you guys think the game would be better if more terrain could be fast traveled through, but you can only do it with a high enough skill in something? Like uh

>Fast travel through mountains with high climbing
>Ford rivers with high swimming
>Fast travel through caves with high observation (Because you'd need a good sense of direction and knowledge of the terrain to guess where to go.)
>>

My milkmaid turned commander learned the hard way that launching yourself at a cyclops from atop a wall is not a smart idea, even wearing artifact chain armour and mastercrafted iron everything.

To her credit she was trying to help two of her squad members (one choked out and the other'd head pulverized).
Too bad cyclops punches don't give a shit about helmets.
One eyed bastard fought back even with a fractured spine, with his guts spilling out and even after one dwarf stabbed him in the heart. Took a spear in the brain to stop it.

Something intresting I noticed. One of then dogs I brought on embark killed a random skink man, and got named. As a joke, I decided to butcher the dog and make severa figurines of him using his own bones. However, in the figurines there are images of the dog being killed by the skink man. My theory is that the game saved the last thing the dog fought and later used it as the reason for his death because I don't think the game can make the image on a figurine of a butchering.

I guess the dwarf really hated that dog for credit for the creature and getting memorized.

>To be honest I feel as though the general started dropping in quality after the tourney finished, possibly getting slower in the process. Maybe I'm imagining things.
It's been 2 threads man, cool it. There's just nothing interesting DF-related happening. We're at that point in the update cycle where we've theorized to death all the features of the upcoming update to the point where there's nothing left to discuss until it's actually out. Like the way the tide sucks itself in before a wave crashes down, we just have to wait for the update to arrive.

This is the point where making up meta-projects (like the tournament) becomes an important activity to keep interest afloat.
>>

I had a similar thing in my fort not long ago, where a named dog was credited with butchering an ostrich in a statue. My guess was that the dog and ostrich had fought before the ostrich was caught in a cage, and then when the ostrich was slaughtered the dog was credited because it had wounded the ostrich. Something similar probably happened in your case.

Well you gotta go where your muse leads, but damn I'm glad someone had the idea to make a set like that.

I've had my computer conspiring to encourage my laziness because the graphics card/window manager I use is a pain to prevent screen tearing on, but tossing in the compton compositor from a totally different WM family fixes it perfectly... and does a graphical reset/crash when I spend too much time in GIMP or even Gwenview, so any time I get tempted to start poking around like that, splurch, gotta restart my compositor and fixed the alignment of everything again.

Does anyone else roleplay or play by their own rules?

A few things I do:
No bridge or anyway of blocking off invaders (I'll wall it off with blocks though that takes time and doesn't always work)
Hardly use traps, might put down cage traps after I blocked off to capture a dragon or something, did capture a hydra only for it to bleed to death. Will put a few cage traps on the cavern level.
>>
>>169636378

I don't use drawbridges either, but I will build a wall and moat and control access with an elevated platform and metal doors. I also assign dwarves to all the noble positions or custom set of professions (no the rapist because utilities are the devil) and discriminate based on that as far as military recruitment and living arrangements go. I consider the player to be the collective will of the people in charge, so I take their personalities into account when I have to make tough decisions (do we close the door on Urist McWoodcutter to keep the goblins out?) to reflect what they would probably do.

Considering that it mostly consists of beard rubbing, and that male-male or female-female pairings lack the beard morphological features required for a beardlet to be deposited and take root it would be hard to tell if they were doing it constantly or not.

Our best theory currently is that a dwarf is an offshoot of the coleoidae subclass of cephalopods which pursued a life on land and thus evolved a K-selection reproductive method involving a long accretion period where the beardlet gathers crumbs and dust from the motherbeard and uses these materials to construct a host body to ride, given the difficulties that these few offspring have keeping their host properly lubricated despite constant consumption of booze, it seems unlikely that any r-selection methods would have proved more viable for cephalopods living on dry land.
>>
>>169654617
cringe
>>
>>169654617
A related phenomenon is the apparent reanimation of dessicated beard hosts by certain human and dwarf individuals who are usually known as necromancers.

In fact these "death diviners" do nothing of the sort, as they are merely learning how to link some of their beard and hair fibers with those of what would normally be an unviable host at suitable points and have them generate a small static charge, sufficient to mimic the activation and control signals normally used by a beard to pilot a host body.

Unfortunately these signals are jumbled and spotty, becoming easily overwhelmed by various autonomous functions in the host body as it tries to initiate self-repair mechanisms which require significant nutrient intake, leading to the rather assholish behavior of these shambling puppets wherein they lurch around biting and clawing at anything with enough of a charge running through it to register on the animating fibers.

The "death diviner" generates a repulsive signal to keep the puppet bodies from attacking it, as do various other creatures of less traditional construction such as vampires and other animated puppets.

Nah nigga, therapist requires pulling up some other shit with a clashing ass color scheme/layout to do the same shit you can just do with manipulator.

...oh wait, except for the couple of super important features that justify the crutch having sideways text and black text on white backgrounds and no easy way to fix that bullshit, my bad, I forgot.

You can get by with just doing some basic vpl shit to get necessary jobs and let migrantfags do whatever, you can control who does what and see their stress/skill levels/enabled labors/sort by arrival time/squad/name/skill level/create profiles and shit I don't even know shit about but are there, and you can do it all by hitting one button from the units screen.

OR

You can start up another fucking program, connect it to df, deal with the shitty interface over there to get it set up, then ctrl+tab or click over to it any time you do something which you could have done with manipulator just as well. :D

In more important news: WHY THE FUCK HAVEN'T I BEEN PLAYING WITH CREATURE VARIATIONS YET!?!?!

FUCK!

I never really screwed with them much but after actually looking at them I feel like an idiot for the way I've gone about setting up castes of creatures with improved materials and whatnot, I mean, goddamn why the fuck didn't I fuck with this shit before?

>go in to c_variation_default.txt once
>set up a list of shit to remove
>set up a list of tags to grab and swap for new tags like stronger materials or metal bones
>add in variations on attacks or gaits in their own variation entries
>tell the game to copy tags from creature A > apply this shit > use these other tokens/options/whatnot
>game just fucking makes a copy of the first creature with the better materials/combat shit without me sticking all the copies of castes in and juggling them
>>

>>169668972
Has nothing to do with immersion you tardbaby, has to do with convenience and aesthetics.

I could totally use twbt with full overrides and all that jazz, and it's super aesthetic and seems more convenient seeing helmets and swords and shit with their own icons... then it crashes, down goes the convenience rating, and the shiny graphics get old when it's the cost of repeated restarts/lost progress/etc, so a nice clean aesthetic wins out in the end.

Therapist is... ok, imagine if manipulator had to use a white background for all the tiles except a few instead of the usual df black background, and imagine if you will that manipulator had to use a unique rotated tileset so all the words on the top are sideways... why the fuck would anyone use it, right?

Glass block floors make the tiles below them count as "inside" tiles, meaning that they won't reduce cave adaption for dwarves who hang out there.

The point of having roof windows would be to reduce cave adaption, while still protecting your dwarves from the weather.

Currently, there is no way to do this in DF.

So you don't want roof windows specifically, but an overhaul of the tile attributes and how cave adaption works.

I'm sure it will happen once light is implemented in 2056.

I don't play with cave adaptation. I certainly find it to be an entertaining and challenging mechanic, but unbalanced. I have tried more than once to limit it to an inside fort, but it's simply impossible due to some invader issues, pathing and things stuck in trees.

It usually leads to intricate burrow design and mercenary squads. I think it still needs proper mending, it builds fast and it's hard to get rid of.

Just putting on an expensive item satisfies the need for extravagance. I periodically switch my military's helmets from adamantine to steel and back to give them the good thought. It's really only an issue with a fully equipped military, since their gear never wears out or needs replacing for the most part. Civvies replace clothing often enough that the ones with that need rarely go red.

Ok, noob here. I've built a downstair, but my miner can't(or won't) use it do go down and mine the section in brown in the picture. Then i tried diggin a up/down stair in the place marked with a X, but it didn't start building.I then tried to cancel the order but nor d+n or d+x worked. What can i do to solve this besides killing myself?
>>
>>169717946
A Downstair is the equivalent of poking a hole in the floor of your apartment and looking in through the ceiling of the apartment below. All you have is a hole, and not a stairway going all the way down to the floor of the next Z-Level.
The Downstair portion of an Up/Down Stair is the same way.
In order for your miners to actually get to the next level, an Upstair (or Up/Down Stair) needs to be built under the Downstair. They'll be able to dig it out from the Downstair "hole."

It sounds like you did that after realizing your miner couldn't get down there, but after that he should've started digging. The fact that you can't cancel the designation must mean the Up/Down Stair has been built, but who knows why he won't dig out the rest. Maybe he's on break?
>>
>>169717946
to [d]esignate an up/down stairway you need a natural stone / dirt wall, you can also try [b]uilding it instead
>>
Sez my dwarfs are sad because they drank without a cup mug or goblet

supposedly these things can be made out of different materials, but at what workshop? I can't find it in the carpenter shop, mason, or metalsmith. i may be retarded though
>>
>>169717946
Wait I've got this
Did you cut a tree on the level above? I'm seeing lots of clay and black sand walls, but no ground path to the brown, so it must have been roots you saw and then disappeared after cutting the tree.

Basically, designate a digging path from the stairst to what you've designated already

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Tilesets

You should try a vanilla "curses style" tileset once you get the hang of things, so you can learn what's actually behind those weird inconsistencies.
Hell, you will have to once the update actually comes, unless you're willing to wait. Personally I recomend you don't wait. Be bold and brave, dude

Also, from your screenshot I'm pretty sure you're using the Text Will Be Text plugin, which means you're using DFHack, so keep in mind that any option in red, or clearly labeled as "DFHack", won't be on the vanilla game, so don't get too used to them.

Yes, that happens often. I embarked with savage surroundings and they constantly get spooked by things such as giant mantis and flies, and I'm quite sure it's the same for keas. Your best option is to move them inside or butchering.

Keas constantly bother, spook and steal anything they can, no matter the size or how dangerous it is, they don't care about their lives and never take a break from it. Apparently that translates to real kea behavior because of some videos of keas playing with shiny things.

I just realised that DF has a lot of mundane, yet really comfy moments that we often take for granted.

Take pic related, for example. I entered a small alley, leading to the entrance of a tavern. In a courtyard connected to the alley, a little girl is playing by herself. The courtyard is in turn connected to another alley (God knows where that one leads). And who knows who I will encounter in the tavern I'm facing.

It's just quaint.

Technically speaking any opening in a wall reduces the room value, having engravings on the interior walls (this shows up in stonesense btw, it does matter for dorfs, take it into consideration when planning things out) helps, having entrance/exits like autistgeometryfort bro did with the big flag and diamond and whatnot forts where they use a different level entirely helps, but the cheap way is something I started using because of vampires drinking a dorf I had gotten attached to: huge open engraved halls with overlapping maximum sized bedrooms, and individual dining closet/storage nooks that I like to take a bit of extra time to go around and expand each bedroom/dining room through the interior door before setting to exterior for the next one, as otherwise dorfs will endlessly shuffle socks and shirts and whatnot into every cabinet their bedroom overlaps, a mistake I shall not soon repeat.

keybinding add Ctrl-Shift-F@dwarfmode/Default "fastdwarf 1 0"

Needs to be capitalized Ctrl or Alt or Shift or combos with - linking them, the @condition can be covered in scripts, I honestly forgot about them because if I want something to recognize that I'm viewing the quest log map I have it do local qmap = dfhack.gui.getCurViewscreen()
if df.viewscreen_adventure_logst:is_instance(qmap) then *stuff*
if df.global.ui_advmode.menu==0 then *otherstuff*
elseif df.global.ui_advmode.menu==26 then *laststuff*
*end chains*

It should be similar but I think the dfhack gui is where you need to find the relevant @context values.

Oh yeah, it might be the mods.
Using Grimlocke's arms and armour mod, which is why that character has a quarterstaff, and I've just remembered that I used the "modest bodies" mod included with it.

Among other things it removes ears, which I kinda regret, as now histfigs spawn holding earrings and can't wear them, which messes with them drawing weapons. Can't actually remember the upsides to it.

It's a bit odd. It adds collarbones, which I mean, sure, but when you run into multi-armed creatures and they have like 8 collarbones it's a bit weird.

Good. I'm clever.

We've encountered some of their cursed lineage before. Just a bit earlier, we ran into her unfortunate spouse, as well as one of their daughters. Now we're finally back to the source, the original dusk woman from which the others spawned.

She's described as "large humanoid with external ribs". She has "two stubby horns and a bloated body". Her "black skin is warty".

Hah!

Years ago playing FFXI I was up at the spot where the two most sought after HNM's (high notorious monsters as I recall, maybe hyper?) popped, Fafnir and Nidhogg, bitchy dragons who dropped a multi-hit sword and/or stuff you can make some of the best endgame gear from right?

So they can pop every 5 minutes for something like a 3 hour window that starts like 20 hours or some shit after it was killed, so when windows come up you start seeing various endgame linkshells pop up waiting to try and claim. Sometimes the windows are during north american prime times, and others it's early morning japanese prime.

Outside of basic auto-complete phrase communication ("<time> <last> <Dragon> <death>?") there wasn't always much chatter outside the linkshell chat channel, but sometimes when some of the peak shells from JP and NA players were up there camping they'd bullshit and trashtalk.

One night I caught one of the JP mithras (catgirl) asking "what mean cum?" and while everyone is laughing they toss out "corned beef?" suddenly.

So I'm standing there as a little taru warrior (cute little midget people with big heads and cute emote actions, good mage, bad melee, just liked bashing shit with a big axe as one) and naturally told them that 'Yes, when I cum there is an explosion of corned beef.'

...

'I should probably see a doctor about that, actually.'

*Moorish kingdom of Al-Andalus, which was in war with the christian, spanish kingdoms, which spoke a heavily vulgarized and modified latin, like pretty much every other european country did.
The spanish laguage was standardized in the 13th century, and the first grammar book for a western european language (other than latin) was published in 1492, being about the spanish language.

If you really wanted to drive your point about french being relevant, you should try the afrancesados. And while you're at it go with the whole "Napoleon saw the spanish king being such a retard he decided to invade just to put Spain out of it's misery" thing.

So what happened with all those moors who lived there? That's right, they became "spanish".

Why are spanish ashamed of their moorish
blood?

So I gave rimworld a try and it just made me want to play dwarf fortress again after a year or so. I see dwarf therapist still isn't updated for 64-bit, but I want to play with the newest version. A few questions:
>What methods do strictly vanilla players use to deal with managing labors in larger forts?
>What's your favorite vanilla tileset? Square or rectangular?
>How stable is the beta version of dfhack? Any crash sources I should watch out for?
Thanks /dfg/

>So what happened with all those moors who lived there?
>What is the inquisition
We converted them, expulsed the ones that didn't convert (pretty much most of them) and eventually expulsed the ones that did convert. Same with jews.

And believe it or not, such a sudden drastic change in demography hurt and stunted our economy, specially on Aragon

control+alt+8 or 9 is how you normally type brackets, isn't it? or is that just for swedish keyboards?
>>
>>169790206
well that's definitely not how I do it on my keyboard
>>
>>169790280
how do you americans do it, then?
>>
>>169790384
nevermind, I found out. after switching to EN keyboard settings, å and ¨ keys gave me brackets.
>>
>>169790384
I'm on a french keyboard actually, the azerty kind. In order to get square brackets I have to hold the alt gr key and press 5 and °. That gives me the brackets [ ].

Also I get regular brackets ( ) as a priority, and if I want to type a number I have to hold shift first.

Sometimes I wish keyboards could change their display according to keyboard layout settings, so they correctly show which key is which. Hell, it'd even open up the possibility of custom layouts.

Anyway, new thread when?
