Debating between grabbing Warhammer or Shogun 2 since they're both cheap at the moment, which is the better of the two?

Shogun 2 is polished, plays well, and if you're fairly new to TW games, it's a good pick. You can't go wrong with it unless you really hate jap history and samurais. Next to Medieval 2, Shogun 2 is my most played Total War.

Warhammer on the other has really diverse factions and the battles are fun, the campaign map is as deep as puddle unfortunately

Fighting beastmen (and savage orcs for the same reasons) as empire is all about deciding the battle before the lines clash in melee. Frenzy is not to be underestimated.

Do whatever you have to to keep them getting pelted by your ranged units as long as possible. Feinting with a well micro'd unit of cavalry can be make or break against an early game blitz by Kazrak.

A labyrinth made up of unscalable walls that makes up the whole map. Multiple ways to the center and tons of dead ends that you can hide chosen in.

You'd have to actually look in the game files though as legendary is also the only difficulty where you can't actually see the battlefield difficulty modifiers, since realism mode is locked to on.

Confession: I have never completed a TW campaign.

Every game I play either ends with a massive rebellion breaking out or with an enemy faction destroying my main fighting force and proceeding towards my territory with their main stack. At this point I typically Alt-F4.

How do I git gud at TW? I love the series, I'm just not very good at it.

I think my main issue is that I tend to overextend. I just got Shogun 2/FOTS on sale and picked the katana focused faction on the south end of the country. I expanded into my neighbor who seemed more focused on blobbing north than dealing with me, who then threw a half stack at one side when two or three rebel factions popped up and took towns on the other.

Alright.
Let's start with Rome 1.
Let auto-battle deal with the bullshit. Unlike Medieval 2, you can typically do better in sieges when you command personally, as long has they don't have stone walls or greater, and the AI won't, unless it's the cities that start with it.

DO NOT BUILD FARMS. Like, at all. Don't build sewers either, anything that increases population growth is bullshit since... I wouldn't call it a bug, more of a mis-balance or something. More pops = more unhappy from poor sanitation, and sewers don't fix that, they make it worse.
You can build farms in destroyed settlements that have the starting 400 pops because those won't get big enough to matter.

I suggest being the Brutii or Greeks. Greek Hoplites are amazing for the tier they are. Cheap and effective well armored units. As the Brutii, build the trade money pantheon in every city that isn't a city you pump troops out of and you'll have infinite money after a while.
And as the Brutii, just spam Hastati and have at least 4 Equites in a full stack.

Otherwise Medieval 2, you can spam spear and town militia and auto-resolve your way to a turn 75 victory with no real thought. 50 turns if you plan out your movement better. If you lose an auto-resolve, reload and buy a frankish mercenary spearmen and that'll usually do it. Sometimes more as well as crossbow mercenaries. You get the idea.

How does upgrading dog units in Attila work? I can upgrade my Gazehounds into Sighthound Spears but I don't understand whose stats are going up - the dog, or the dog handler. I would assume a Sighthound is a different and perhaps more ferocious breed than a Gazehound but I have no idea.

Rome 2, make sure you have enough food. Fire up those pantheons because I could sure go for a good culture shift. Rebels will happen during this. Sometimes you can repel the idiot AI with your 1 professional garrison troop backed up by whatever skirmishers they give you in your garrison.
Fuck navies. They're worthless until you get pissed off at the 2 half health boats in constant forced march and raiding stance.

Haven't played Attila but troops with the word "levy" are trash.

Warhammer is pretty basic. Lots of fun though. Bring cav. Crossbows rape unarmored units to death. Don't focus on increasing Empire units morale through general upgrades because they already have great morale. At least not with Karl, make him a melee fighter meant to take out enemy generals.

Probably Attila. The campaign part is less fucked. Rome 2 has a lot of bad connotations around here but I think it's fine. I never had to deal with it on release though.

Shogun 2 is the safest bet. Really fun, still newish. Most satisfying battles outside of Warhammer. Most people will tell you to pick based off of what era you like better. Rome 2 has muh unit diversity and all that. But Attila just has better everything. Only without all those super cool ancient empires.

At least I get a lot of fun out of super optimizing my economy enough to send armies to key cities and capturing everything on the way.
Like in Medieval 2 you pretty much have to start marching towards that castle in the upper right right away. I do it with militia spam and then wait until mongols invade. Upgrading everything in the east as much and as fast as possible while filling them with professional troops.

See, you gotta get a really chivalrous general so you get a massive population boost to the castles so you can make them Fortresses in time. Also balista towers. Those are fucking important.

Then you gotta see who you can do it faster as. Is it England or France where almost every city you conquer has your unit type so you can recruit 2 town milita and take your whole army on the move again in the same turn leaving it empty (but it gets the recruited troops so they don't revolt)?
Or is it an Italian nation with really good, professional level militia that will wipe out anything, but you have to build all your armies at home?
Is it better to start as the shitty HRE with their awful troop selection, but best position in the map? Or do you want a nation that will get musketeers? You don't want musketeers. You want archers. So France, England, or Venice.

Empire is pretty easy even on VH or Legendary if you just turtle up in Reikland and jump on Marienburg and Nuln when they're vulnerable, but it's also very boring.

Your heavy cav of choice are going to be reiksguard for a very long time, because you only need a reiksfort for them instead of upgraded stables.

You don't need to go deep on support skills for franz, but you will need honest steel at the very least. Be aware that the attack, defense, and weapon strength boosts the ai gets on higher difficulties will make it much riskier to send franz after enemy lords.

Access to ror units will help you a lot, because you will unlock the higher-tier ones before you get the buildings to recruit them normally, and sons of sigmar makes the early game much easier.

suck the dicks of everyone close to you then go finish off the Welfs. It's always the fucking wood elves in my campaigns coming in out of nowhere when I'm fucking busy. The earlier the better since their power creep is unrivaled.

Use all the sweet elf gold to buy better buildings and then shit on the Vampire Counts.

Embed a warrior priest into your army and get the traits that make your troops heal from almost dead to 100% ready to go in one turn. Seriously, it stacks with logistician on empire lords. It's so good.

Once Chaos comes, just chill and secure your cities while Todd goes nuts. I haven't had one game where Todd doesn't just piss off and take all of the settlements north of Reikland and does a great job wrestling Chaos.

Because Milan has a decent strategic location. It's positioned in a place which allows the emperor to react quickly enough to threats coming through the Alps or Pannonia towards Italy.
You can also reach the Rhine rather quickly from it.
Rome on the other hand is in bumfuck nowhere and doesn't allow you to move against threats quickly enough.

Two questions:

Do the unit resizes actually work, or does it fuck up hitboxes and cause units to swing in the air and magically hit enemies that are out of their reach?

Is there a way to get a mod into a currently running campaign? Shit like unit resizes or other changes that only affect visuals have no damn reason to cause issues.

And the AI factios were rarely a match for Chaos.
I think it must be cause they tend to have really shitty armies, but they are wiped out one after the other, while all settlements are burned to the ground.

Not him but if I recall correctly the game will whine if it detects different mods enabled compared to when it was started. Don't remember if CA cared enough to check which ones are purely cosmetics and which ones aren't though.
