If you've never done a single one before, prepare to sit through a LOT of talking about theological discussion with a bunch of clergy-to-be, and a great deal of running around. Do you have to come in first for it to be considered a win? Or is it something like 1st place counts as 2 wins, 2nd place counts as 1 win 1 loss, 3rd place is 2 losses?

Just git gud. Mostly is just being familiar with the fights really. Though having shadewalker from a Ninja is helpful boost and can let you open in Sword Oath, I'm fortunate to have a NIN in my group for that.
