So yeah, add stuff like this onto the item_weapons entries as a default improvement (check out the item tool scroll sections) and put these into the reactions, end result is that the handles and shit show up with the relevant materials. >>
>>162607450
The wiki would do a much better job than I would at explaining.

Taverns basically act as a meeting hall for your dwarves, where they go and get served booze by a tavern keeper, can socialize, dance, sing and have fun. They can also attract outsiders from your fort, such as warriors and performers. These outsiders can apply to become residents of your fort, and if you accept them, they hang around, and become just like your own dwarves.

Temples give your dwarves a place to pray and commune with their gods, and gives good thoughts.

Libraries mean your scribes can write down stuff and make books and scrolls and shit, which can then be read by dwarves in search of mental gymnastics. Also they attract wandering scholars.

>It wasn't strictly necessary, as usual, but we're adding a few more cover identities to be used by agents sneaking into towns to collect information (they can also use the existing artist, scholar and warrior professions as cover). In order for the agents not to stick out for the player, their cover professions need to be held by real counterparts. So there'll be prophets, pilgrims, monks, peddlers and petty criminals. They won't get many mechanics, but they'll be around. The stuff we do add for them have a secondary purpose to set the stage for the myth release -- the prophecies are stored in a way which aligns with the myth generator we wrote (though that's not coming in yet), and it also relates to an expanded language framework (that's not coming in yet either). It should be good to toy around with those ideas a bit first before we get to the full implementation.
Seems like we're gonna have to be careful around those bards and mercs.

Question
if I lock traders behind a drawbridge can they starve? if so, can I have their stuff, without conflict?
>>
>>162618416

>>162615575
the worst.
>>
>>162618416
Nope. Only citizens can starve.

The best way to get rid of traders is by using drowning chambers connected to pumps. Also make sure to dig a tunnel connecting to the edge(using fortifications) through which the water can leave.
>>
>>162618416
No, but they will go insane after a while. Then you can have their stuff. If any of them turn stark raving mad those will eventually dehydrate, but they're just as likely to go berserk or melancholy.

If the traders die in your territory for any reason the civ that sent them will treat it as if you killed them yourself.

Also don't listen to these other nerds talking about water pumps, all you gotta do is build your depot in a room you can seal and then throw corpses down through the roof so you can give them some tasty miasma. just Auschwitz those dirty knife ears.

They won't starve, but I believe they might go insane after they're stuck long enough. That takes a LONG time tho.
A better bet is to unleash some captured monsters on them and hope for the best.

Without conflict?
No, the civ that sent the caravan measures with how much Wealth the caravan goes away, and with how much Wealth it comes back. If the latter is less than the former, the civ won't like it and will consider it theft.
This is why forcefully taking stuff is a bad idea, be it through the trade screen or just murderfucking them.
Hell, this even counts for caravans getting killed by creatures outside of your fort, which is an annoyance.

Take care of your caravans unless you want potential war. Granted, this doesn't count for dorf civs, only elves and humans
>>
Newbie here. Last time I played was few years ago.

In theory I should be able to survive at least few years on just plump helmets right? I keep getting out of seeds until my farm plots dies off. My farmers, cooks and brewers get deadly bored. No idea what's going on with that.

I'm not that experienced with it, but I believe 10x10 should be more than fine.
Just keep an eye out on your food stocks and adjust if need be.

I recommend simply buying some plump seeds from dorf caravans from time to time.
Or just turn plump helms off for cooking and just eat them raw.

This is so rad tho
Visiting your old forts in adv mode was fun, but ultimately there was little to do unless it was destroyed by a FB

Now imagine all the rumors you'll get from artifact thefts, which you can then track down.

Hell, I imagine we'll have political murders at some point using the same disguise system.
And imagine this: they could just run back for payment after the deed is done, allowing finding out who gave the order, or continue living in the fort and leave everyone guessing. Imagine the latter scenario, and dorfs start to throw accusations. Imagine the FUN that could be had

We used to have loyalty cascades. Soon enough we'll have civ-wide accusation-cascades with not just dorfs murdering eachother in a fort, but armies being sent

/dfg/, can you tell me why I enjoy so much mass destruction and horror like this?
>>
>>162640693
Just do a little of everything. Most crops are seasonal, so you can just have a few small plots to rotate between them. Keep in mind that plumps are the only subterranean crop that's ready to eat right out of the ground. Sweet pods, cave wheat and quarry bush are all edible afrer processing, and their products make for some very valuable prepared meals.
>>
>>162640693
Pig tails. You can't et them, but they can be brewed AND woven into cloth. Dimple cups can be milled into blue dye wich you can put into cloth to give it a higher value, but if you're new to the game I wouldn't recommend messing with it just now.

Aboveground crops. Dorfs can prefer eating aboveground stuff, and some of those can be turned into alcohol. You can get seeds from using up plants you dorfs gather outside.

It is. The message is misleading. See how the X's where you're trying to build the plot are green? That means you can build the plot, which you would be unable to do if it wasn't valid spot for farming.
Also, it appears that you were already on soil. There was no need to irrigate.

Not really. They have different RNG'd instruments, though.

Also, depending on the clothing values in the raws, each civ will have a kind of "national costume" consisting of a set of randomly picked clothes. This means that there is some diversity even among civs of the same race. In some human civs almost everyone wear turbans and robes, and in some civs everyone wear caps and tunics, et cetera.

It's not really the end of the world if you don't personally assign every dorf to the perfect labor every time. It's not anal to check whose the best dwarf for the job, but it is anal to literally check everyone and put them to the most optimal job every time. At that point you should open a calculating program and do some excel sheets and start drawing blueprints while you're at it, wouldn't want to build unnecessary corridors.
Of course not telling you how to play, just saying that that level of control is unnecessary in what is pretty much a glorified ant farm at this point.

yeah, but everyone is pentalingual it seems
Someone suggested on the forums once that abilities for each language should be added.
Dwarves would be born with dwarf language( or quicly learning it sine birth, feral dwarfs ftw) and if they wanted to communicate with another civ, they should learn their language, or use diplomats
Learning a foreigner language would simply require listening to gibberish from other races, and eventually, patches of the stuff they tell would start appearing as your language.
With enough time, you'd understand everything they say to you
This also adds the possibility of people not talking to you, or that the people that speak to you can verbalize so badly you wouldnt understand them

Turn them into blocks, then use the blocks to build watchtowers/walls/megaprojects/elaborate multi-tile fuck-off-elves monuments(fuckprojects), or just cover the surface in smooth rock to prevent too many filthy trees from growing.
Any of these options will require shitloads of blocks, and after it's done you'll wonder where all the rock went now that you need to build coffins and memorials.

>>162659779
A longstanding bug is that some tissues that ought to be healable aren't. This includes nails. He's probably already been treated for the wound, but the tissue can't heal on its own so he'll eventually die from infection or bleeding (if it's still bleeding). You might be able to save him; go into tissue_templates.txt in your save's raw/objects folder, and add [HEALING_RATE:1000] to the entry for nail. Add it to cartilage, claw, and talon while you're at it. Check to make sure it's supposed to have the underscore, I can never remember.

Tavern/temple/library ought to be your priorites. You should get them up and running way sooner than you have, as your starting 7 and first migrant wave are probably all already approaching distraction. But really you shouldn't have to decide between any of those. You've got enough workers that you should be able to designate the spaces for everything on your list and have it done within a few minutes. Then it's literally just plopping down some zones and a few pieces of furniture.
>>
Why isn't this working? It should translate to "make up to 10 thrones if we have less than 5" but my mason is going ham and filling my stockpiles.

I also kinda doubt you'd ever have stagnant water allowing you to use the machine without also having flowing water or being capable of making it flow.

What do I do? I can't have this guy started some kind of commie dwarven uprising.

dwarves aren't marxist, but they're as "communist" as north korea is, if not more-so since there's no micro-economy within the fort. in fact a dwarf fort functions almost exactly like how the norks function.

Created my first world in the current version of DF, and stumbled upon this gem of a demon in Legends mode. He is currently the head of a goblin bandit group whose sole member and leader is himself, and has taken refuge in an abandoned human hamlet.

Things like this seem to happen much more rarely in the current version. I miss strongholds and I miss regularly seeing demons in control of human civs. I don't think I've seen a demon mistaken for a deity by humies even once since version 42.01, but this is a welcome development.

As I recall, demons even once wrote books if they took over a human site, which they would leave all over the place. And they could even become slaves in worldgen. Once, in 34.11, I even had a companion that was a demon, which I pulled off by finding and freeing him from slavery under his human overlords. We absolutely annihilated everything that was thrown at us for weeks as increasingly large groups of goblins began attacking us in the night, until one day we both were entombed in ice trying to cross to a new continent during Winter. Was the first time I encountered the "sudden giant wall of ice encroaching on you as night falls" bug, and it was super scary.

That's another thing, I really miss the massive groups of gobbos and bandits that would hunt you down simply for being a famous hero. World simulation is super cool and satisfying, but I have to admit I miss the more game-ey mechanics. I would die happy if guaranteed escalating sieges and attacks on adventurers were a to be a toggleable option in DF v1.0.
>>
>>162701081
People hunting you is something that'll be coming back with the artifact stuff at least to some extent. He put the quests and stuff back in with proper fame for them too now.

I did add [POWER] to various intelligent mega and semimegas and they take over sites and impersonate deities now all the time.

>>
>>162727379
>dwarf cancel firefighting interrupted by : fire

>>162728403
No. Vermin remains disappear quickly enough that they'll never be a significant source of fps loss. Even in extreme cases, like right after breaching a cavern 3 with a high creepy crawler pop, you'll never have more than a couple hundred at a time, which is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the tens of thousands of items you're likely to build up over the course of a fort. You would save more fps by killing all your cats. Or just one cat.

So I was curious, and I visualized the release times. It's interesting how consistent the release/bugfixing cycle is. On average a new release every 9 days. Although it would be interesting to see how it compares with # of fixed bugs and added features.

Width of the bars corresponds to the duration in weeks; heights are number of releases per cycle; scale: 1 release = 1 week. So a square means that there was a release every week, with a taller rectangle meaning less than a week between releases (only happened in the first release cycle).
DF has been in development for over 10 years now with the time between 2 releases being very roughly 1-2 years. After the recent 2 year wait, Toady intended to shorten that time, but we'll see how that looks in a few years. I'm guessing that we'll wait a whole year for the current one.

>>162740343

We've killed so many FBs in this fort that they're a dietary staple. It's gotten to the point that there's a very real possibility that they'll go extinct. The biggest risk he poses is that when I open the gate a weaver will walk through some other FB's deadly blood and kill some of my livestock. I have more meals made of FBs than all my dwarves could eat in 10 years if that was all they had available. So the better question is: why fight it? Nothing to gain and almost nothing to lose.

Doesn't matter much what your graphics are, you'll have to loo(k) at everything to know what it is anyway. Just go with whatever you feel comfortable with. If you do use a graphical set (a tileset +creature sprites) you may find yourself unable to follow diagrams and screenshots that use ASCII-like tilesets, which is rarely an issue the other way around. And you'll probably catch some shit here on occasion from people who disapprove of your aesthetic choices.

Zimun was already wounded when Tolon showed up, but eventually won by strangling Tolon to death only to die from blood loss about 30 tiles away.
I've got screenshots of the location and some combat logs as well as injury pages if any of that interests you.

Oh, I see.
When you (v)iew a dwarf you can see their translated surname below their untranslated surname in the right pane. So it would say, for example, Urist Uristurist at the top, and below that "Urist Daggerdagger". I think also there may be an init option to change how names are displayed? I'm not certain.

Aye that film's on my radar also.
If you were to recast The Core (2003) with dwarves it would fit the bill. Going to the Earth's core to blow it up in order to start it turning again...

Sort of dwarfy-feeling:
Time Bandits, Troll Hunter, Pan's Labyrinth.
Can't think of any that really fit the bill though.

I do usually pick a site that at least is labeled as having (deep metal) but due to how few and far between the veins are I do end up trading for most of my metal anyway. You learn to appreciate that skilless fuckwit that became a legendary stonecrafter after getting a mood. And jewelers become more valuable than weaponsmiths.

Plus imagine intentionally infecting a group of recruits then sending them out to fight off-site, spreading debilitating diseases to your enemies.

What's the worst your adventurer has been through?

I had an elf topple a statue once, hoping to get transformed into a werebeast to heal a foot (crutches couldn't help me stand up), getting vampirism instead and encountering bogeymen the night after. She lost her ability to grasp, stand and see while trying to run away and spent her last hours full of mortal wounds, scrambling in the dark in the dead of the night, in the middle of a forest, hoping the morning would come soon enough and allow her to drink some victim's blood at ease. Eventually, a bogeyman crushed her head.
>>
>>162822673
I once raided a necro tower while being a were-beast
I had never raided one before, but I quickly realized that the enormous ammount of zombies was no laughing matter
Now I didnt know that resurrecting ability had basically zero cooldown, so I just stood there, sorrounded by a bajillion zombies unleashing my bestial fury
Eventually I should kill them all, right?
When shit went down, and I realized that Necros could make you fight zombies forever I was receiving so much hits per turn that my max speed aumented, because of the massive leveling of atributes from armor ability
Worst thing Is that, while a were-beast, you are tough as fuck, so even If your spine or throat gets slitted open, you can survive

Anyways, I actually got away from that
The necro was a male peachbirdman, and got too close to me, so I ripped one of his wings with my teeth, nicknamed him sefiroth, and threw him 20 tiles away
From that distance, he couldnt see his zombies, so I killed enough to open a breach in the horde, and escaped
I recovered from everything by the end of the transformation, but I was a pile of beaten bloody-flesh scrambling around before that

I set up a little fort.

There are infections, though they're only treatable by cleaning and excision of infected flesh. Pain is absolutely a thing, creatures in pain take a penalty to skill rolls and can pass out from it. I mean, you're practically waving an "I'm new!" flag, as before the recent nerf to pain effects it was one of the most infamous and reviled features of DF's combat system.
>>
>>162822025
I don't think so mayne
There will probably be a mechanic so dwarves prefer pure races against hibrids when breeding
It makes sense. Else the races would crumble to dust in 5 gen.
>>162824061
>Tinctures
I just had a rare good idea
>Chemical and therefore medicinal properties are added to all materials
>Now flowers, vegetal life and minerals may or may not have things in them that can help your dwarves
>Order your alchemist to make some sweet(very concentrated) +Pumple Helmet Spawn Tincture+
>Try it out on your elf helper slave
>He instantly dies
>Tell the mayor you need another asistant while you decide what next thing to try on the poor creature
>''Yep, this disolution of lead dust seems cool''

When coined with the procedurally generated stuff Toady has in mind, like random life forms, minerals and societies, you could take the role of an alchemist and actually discover the useful uses for every material in the game
Whats more, this coordinates perfectly with the fantasy slider, as it would be easier to have a flower with some healing-everything-properties in a magical world, than it would be in a mundane world

I went to kill a titan once that turned out to be a blob made of water with webs. It could only do push attacks which couldn't kill me, but was able to keep me webbed so I couldn't attack it. Eventually, after ~40 hours, I was passing out from tiredness every few turns, very hungry and dehydrated, when I finally managed to get free and take a turn. And I missed. I wish the story ended with me dying of dehydration while fighting a giant watermonster, but I did manage to kill it eventually. It was 34.11, before the move/combat speed split, so all the free armor user xp I was getting by laying there helplessly gave me the edge in speed I needed to kill it. I died to bogeymen walking back to town.

So how is the state of the tournament now? If the problem is remaking the point system, then I really think that the only way to go is to just go with tourneyanons gut feeling and test a new point system in a tournament.
Some things to guide in doing so would be giving smaller creatures more points and possibly making a system for attribute buying. Though I think that a better solution for some creatures crazy attributes would be to nerf those specific creatures rather than complicate the whole process more.
There was also talk about making armor cost differently based on size, as larger creatures get thicker armor. No idea if anyone has any tangible proof on how it matters in combat, but I think that giving smaller creatures more points would be the solution for this as well, as it's simpler and large guys can't really afford armor anyway.

Yeah. There isn't much to do in it, though.

Supposedly, this game used to have pretty much content in the form cities that you could visit and different cultures to interact with. However, shortly before the development was cancelled, Toady remove almost all content from it in order to rework the main mechanics and generalise.

In the last (and only) version available on the website, there isn't much to do apart from wandering the wilderness and attack random trees, inevitably ending up getting killed by their counterattacks.

Sorry, but I'm not sure how seeds work, and I forgot that I used a custom medium with a few things changed like volcano number and boogeyman/demon types. This war originally supposed to be an adventure world with like 65 civs, loads of megabeasts, and quite a few secrets of life and death. Decided to try out an embark and it seems to have some really good resources along with deep metals/shallow metal in both the ocean and mountain biome. Going to use DFhack to let me embark here. I stopped after like 120 years because it was slowing down too much for my taste. I just uploaded the region folder in case you wanted it.

>>
>>162864107
how can it ruin your immersion to prospect?
thats what people DID.
thats what they have always done.

Only a fucking tard picks some random spot and says, "This looks like a good place to dig"
>>
>>162864475
I only play on medium worlds, so I go for something like 60-70 so theres a decent amount of wilderness but all the races are still intact and urban sprawl can develop.
>>
>>162864493
iron age prospectors had no way of knowing what exact ores would be deep beneath their feet before even taking a pick to rock. The shallow metals/deepmetals/flux thing is enough.
>>
>>162864493
the knowledge of clays, soils, shallow/deep metals, flux etc. is more realistic prospecting than knowing the entire mineralogy and specific quantities of geological materials in any given area.

at the point where you're trying to min/max start locations in dwarf fortress, you might as well set embark points to 900k and bring twenty wagons full of everything you've ever wanted, see how fun that ends up being. discovering the geology of your map is part of the fun.

yes, my concept of fun is objectively superior to yours.
>>
>>162864701
>>162864841
Yes they did.
Prospectors would almost always end up doing exploratory digging before committing to any sort of mining operation, especially during that period.
>>
>>162865110
I specifically said BEFORE exploratory digging. And no, they still didn't know. Hell, world history was changed entirely by Athens lucking into a huge silver lode.

Is there any way to find the specific location of a vault?
I'm using legends viewer to locate the vault. I have the map tile where the vault is, but I can't zoom in to embark area
Will I have to basically embark on the entire tile, reveal the vault, and then abandon?
>>
>>162870709
Grab the exported sites and pops.

Get the number of the vault in the site export and subtract one, so if it's 53 in the export you would put:

gui/gm-editor df.global.world.world_data.sites[53] and then go down to flags and switch Undiscovered to false, and unk_8 to true.

ya pretty much. you could also make an adventurer and search the tile, noting where it is for your fortress. I embarked on a regular 4x4 area with a vault, and my FPS is dead. Im getting like 3 frames unpaused. It also seems like when you unpause the angels travel out of the vault to slay your dwarves, and the pathing causes FPS death. First time embarking on a vault though so I don't know if it happens every time
>>
>>162667634
>>162667810
Don't use a perpetual order. The conditions are to start the task, so when you have 6 thrones, your mason will start making thrones perpetually.

Unless your supply lines are perfect perpetual jobs are only trouble.

If you insist on checking monthly you should just set it to make five thrones. If you also insist on having exactly ten thrones no matter what you can use four jobs; Making 5, 3, 2, and 1 throne.

Have Fun with their conditions.
>>
>>162871071
Derp, if it was 53 in the export you put sites[52] for it.

local hid = df.global.world.world_data.sites
for k, v in ipairs(hid) do
hid[k].flags.Undiscovered=false
hid[k].flags[8]=true
end

Caution: it will reveal EVERYTHING on the map, all sites, all vaults, all lairs, everything.
