Also, Fireden.net is down. Has it been down for a while? If so, I'll start looking around for a new archive.
>>
>>162308638
In all the years I've been coming to this general I've never been to a link between the wiki and "this pasta". If I'm at all representative of the rest of /dfg/, then maybe replacing it is unnecessary.
>>

Guys what if in the myth and magic update, Toady connects the eerie glowing pits to a place even deeper than hell
>>
>>162309510
Oh shit
Imagine that in adventure mode if you get powerful enough you can go to hell and see whats in the glowing pits
Or in fortress mode you can have a magic dwarf that can actually go into the pit and survive

More seriously though, open a terminal, cd to your df folder, probably either df_linux or .dwarffortress, there should be a df file in there, and if you have dfhack installed there will also be a dfhack file in there, run ./df or ./dfhack and it'll launch. If you installed through the package manager you could probably also just type dwarffortress directly but it won't launch dfhack if you're wanting it.

>Honest question, should joint damage be nerfed?
A bit.

It would be fun to see more actual broken and dislocated joints, and less torn nerves.

Also, it should probably be balanced so that it doesn't favour the larger force as much as it currently does.

Before joint damage, the battle in DF was basically Dynasty Warriors, with a small militia slashing down gobbos left and right, while every lucky hit the gobbos got ended up deflected or just leaving a bruise. Now, even one of those lucky hits will easily cripple even a legendary soldier on the spot, making your militia much more vulnerable against the gobbo hordes.

It might be more realistic, but it's not always very fun.

>>162336928
I agree with you, but the problem is not too realism, the problem is the lack of realism

You see, most hits to the head shouldnt end up in broken necks, the neck actually have some very thick layers of fat, muscle and tendons, not to talk about the thickness of the vertebrae itself
A direct hit should break those tendons and ligaments before breaking the neck, as you point out with dislocation stuff
The current system is actually like having a crystal neck sorrounded by flesh. Yeah, you'r neck will survive, but with any moderately strong hit, your spine will shatter, and that isnt realistic

Although I love the combat system, there should be more proper escalation in a fight, not too much, because combat isnt like the movies, but people should definitely freak out about having blood come out of their throats and stuff like that, you get me?
Having some fly-man suddenly break your neck with a thrown spoon is hilarious, but only the first three times

>>
>>162343012
No they don't. Sometimes I think animals bring vermin with them, elk birds always are surrounded by creepy crawlers no matter where they are in my games. Cats hunt vermins if tha thelps.
>>
>>162343012
Those are vermins, bring some cats along and yes, at least they give dwarfs unhappy thoughts. IIRC they also can spoil food, but I recommend consulting wiki on this question.
Dwarfs ignore wild plants as long they are not ordered to collect them directly or plant gathering area is not set.

When birds "root around" at their feet they uncover vermin. They can be assumed to be eating them but it's abstracted atm.

They are harmless, and will disappear shortly.

If wild plump helmets or other things are growing you need to tell your dwarves that you want them collected. Ass[i]gn a gathering zone, and they will do so.

>The only drawback is that with adding pack animals, dorfs will lose their magic ability to carry tons of stuff, and using animals will be a necessity
A good chunk of that could be fixed by implementing pockets, though I agree that it's a small price to pay for implementing animal labor. At first, they'll only haul, but then they'll power our pumps and mills...

For those of you who heavily use traps against the filthy goblin hordes, what do you do to deal with trolls? Trolls are harder to kill than goblins and more likely to crawl through multiple traps, which can be disastrous when all you've got is stonefall traps. So far I've been using a strategy of
>dig narrow tunnels into side of trap-laden entrance
>place statue at end of tunnels and fill rest with traps
>trolls, being building destroyers, path to statues, get killed or crippled by tunnel traps, leave main group of traps untriggered so that they're good to slaughter the goblins
and it's been working well enough, but I can't help but feeling there's something more efficient I could be doing.

Also, when I make the gradual upgrade for a trapline of stonefall traps to weapon traps, should I start at the front or the back?
>>
>>162356194
On a related note, has anyone else fantasized about being able to forge metal "boulders" that you could load stonefall traps with, making them much deadlier? Imagine dropping masterwork lead "boulders" on your foes; not only are you going to get a lot more damage from the higher density, but you're also going to get more hits from quality.

I've heard it's going to be right after the 'scenarios' update, but don't take my word for it.

>>162358559

>>
>>162358948
probably never since water still works by teleporting entire fluid tiles without flow.

Boats will be a nightmare to code and will most likely have to be designated ala rooms or buildings to even begin correctly calculating mass and floating.
Or you can have memeboats that are 1x1 tile and hold everything like carts.

Can't the flow just be abstracted, and separated from the actual fluids?

For the boat movement, they need to be able to move in at least eight directions, but they should only need to actually rotate in the four cardinal directions. Keeping track of different zones and shit on board shouldn't be that bad.

Pity, I was kind of looking for something to bridge the gap between the huge amount of stonefall traps that I quickly and desperately set up without much regard for quality before the goblins show up and the huge amounts of perfect weapon traps made with masterwork mechanisms and 10 masterwork large serrated steel discs each. Ah well, I've still got those weapon traps made from caravan trap weapons and reclaimed goblin weapons.

So, the uh weapon lord bandit group that froze me last night when too many got around and the "20+attacks at once=freeze" bug hit?

Well I managed to use the terrain better to keep them strung along in a line instead of clumping up, finally ran them off after like 50 kills. Usually morale is related to the size of the group vs losses I think, and 50 losses seemed awfully high.

Then I followed them back to their camp.

Is it hard for you to understand that other people value the IRL aesthetics of some rocks and minerals above others? Is it hard for you to understand that when those people see them represented in DF, they imagine the real thing?

If you can understand that, then you should also be able to understand that people prefer certain rocks and minerals in the game, regardless of the economical uses the game ascribes to them.

You can and I have seen armies take over a city, the whole 4k elf army thing I did was en route to a town when I intercepted them before letting them come all the way to the town so I could battle them there.

Not many, but there are lots of things that kill other people that won't kill vampires. >>
>>162404182
Yeah, velociraptors are only an example. Getting eaten by people or rabbits or small space gods would do it too. As long as the vampire is subdivided into enough discrete vampire bits it's effectively dead. Swallowing them whole is probably not effective.

Am I right in thinking using coins to trade is an uneconomical choice? If I make coins from gold they have a certain value. But if I make gold crafts, some of them will be more valuable because of their craftsdwarfship. So coins are worth less than crafts, right?
>>
>>162416839
Yeah, the color scheme has a nice comfy feel to it with that blueblackgrey thing going on.
>>
>>162417647
Anon claimed not long ago that coins trade at a 1:1 value in the trade depot instead of merchants demanding a profit. I don't know if it's true or not, but if it is there are probably situations where coins would get you more trade value per job. A highly skilled negotiator and masterwork crafts will likely still be worth more when trading, and they're definitely going to increase your fort's created wealth more.
>>
>>162414886
I don't into reddit and I'm not keen to start, but I'm curious about something. Could anyone explain how the points thing works? Can you turn them in for a decoder ring or something?
>>
>>162409904
symmetry is overrated anyway
>>
>>162419167
The more points a comment has in a thread the more visible it is.

Other than that, they do nothing whatsoever.
>>
>>162419167
People vote on the comments and links, the points show the number of positive votes.
Comments with many points have preference in the post, and comments can be made to the post and comments themselves, and so they create this cascade effect of the branches and organize themselves by the points system.
You can select to show either top (amount of positive points), controversial (big number of points, both positive and negative, negatives aren't known), and other variations.
Comments with more negative points tend to be hidden and only show a placeholder like "comment below the threshold".
Points aren't unique to the comment/link though, they are added to the account which made/linked them, and so accounts with more points have visibility priority over those who have less.

Hence why it's so shitty.

It is, but it's really big, huge, so it has communities for things that are dead in other places, and many forums have basically completely migrated to it, many resources can be found there... it's cancer, but it has its uses.

>>162420650
I kinda agree, but even smaller communities can be shit. It depends on how much "culture" they take from the front page or avoid it. That said, even shit communities there are productive, and reddit is a bit more stable and up to date, plus their willingness to help for points makes shit easy to find.

It's easy as shit just with a single trap hallway and no military. They'll walk into a few traps, get scared and run away. Traps are a total bore.

Im writing a suggestion for the forums about fighting styles and martial arts
Its very interesting to me, but Im having some troubles with the conception
Are you oposed to style-unique abilities going wrong and hurting yourself(headbutt so strong you break your neck, etc)
how about dwarves having years long strange moods to create new martial arts in-game that offer buffs and nerfs depending on various factors?

Hello, I've been coming to these meetings for a while, but I relapsed.

>>
>>162458276
Mh

Hurting yourself because of your own attack seems like an interesting feature.

For example, let's say you're an adventurer and you have superhuman strength and average toughness, you can punch really hard, but your hand might not be able to handle the force of the impact, and you would end up hurting yourself.
>>
>>162458941
It would be interesting to self-harm directly, as any other mechanics
Interaction with your sorroundings really affects inmersion
We lack the option to suicide directly, which exists in other roguelikes

I went to a lot of trouble to flood my second cavern layer with magma to kill this forgotten beast. I mean, I was going to do it anyway, but when he showed up I had an excuse. But instead Bax climbed around and leaped from treetop to treetop, danced between 1/7 tiles of magma like a goddamn marcasite ballerina, and basically had a grand time not dying to my cunning plans. Then the fucker deadly dusts himself into a natural magma pool trying to kill some blind cave ogres. He couldn't deadly dust himself into any of the magma I so thoughtfully arranged for him, nooo, mine wasn't good enough. He had to go magma sea diving instead. Now I've got a cavern that's half magma lake and the other half covered in Bax's forgotten AIDS dust, and not a bit of satisfaction to show for it.

They are already in some sense.

I believe I once had 2 goblin civs go to war because the demons had conflicting spheres.
Posted some Legends screenshot about it here on /dfg/ too, I might still have it somewhere
>>
>>162465581
Yep
>>
>>162464926
Oh well
Its partly to simulate the master's time it takes for him to come up with the new and unique fighting style
If something bad happens during that period, like having a friend killed or something like that, that would effect the newly created style

For example, one of the examples I wrote took into consideration the death of a mother
The dwarf felt impotence for the death of the mother, so In the martial art he created, the atacks gain buffs when you are protecting someone important to you
Its more complex than it sounds, and would need a lot of things from the spheres of power and such to work, but its really cool

Hmm interesting. There should be a way to pull your punches in that case
>>
>>162465605
nah, you know what I mean
Gods making stuff in the world based off their spheres
In the combat suggestion I talked before, I leave space for gods telling mortals definitive fighting styles, based on their spheres
For example, a god of death gives very brutal buffs, like muay thai, but a god of inteligence gives fighting styles that are closer to yoga, or other non-combatatant styles, just for training, but very good for you
>>
>>162465581
unless you are constantly moving magma around, disabling temperature has almost no effect. All it does is make things stay hot and never cool down and some other things to bug out.

Guys, this will surely be added after terraformation and damage to structures(ground, etc.) is made possible. After that, the combat/interaction system will be expanded, and you'll be able to hit anything
The things you dont break but arent tough, like mud statues, will give no damage
Punching the sharp point of a sword in a adamantine statue will probably slash your hand and make you fall three floors because the statue was located near a hill, and the sword didnt offer any resistance to your hit
>>

Also having consent be a part of it, rather than just locking a maiden down in a wrestle position and having a go. Is something like this ever been attempted? Is it doable in raws? I think I'd like to have an adventurer go on a bloody rape spree and the such.

I think he meant climbing. As you probably remember, it was added in 0.40 and fundamentally changed how most players bult their defenses.

Unless you want to seal yourself off in case off emergency, one level will still do for the walls. No enemies will choose to climb if your fort can be accessed without climbing. That means that you can still use one level walls to lead the enemy precisely where you want them.

Does long history hurt performance significantly? How much do you usually play at? Can't decide whether I should just go for 5 years or 250.
>>
>>162486960
5 years is weird because you have dwarves older than time itself and none of your migrants have skills above adequate.
>>
>>162486960
Why not 125? Or 25 or 30 or whatever. I've done a lot of playing with practically no history and it really does effectively cut out certain features, like werebeasts and vampires. As for performance, I haven't noticed a lot of difference, but I really haven't been looking very hard.

>>
>>162487851
>none of your migrants have skills above adequate

Absolutely false. I've actually gotten high masters as immigrants in my current fort, which is currently in the sixth year of world history. And that's not including the merchants and caravan guards who immigrate after trading, since there aren't any other histfigs to draw from.

The "older than time itself" thing is true though. Most of my dwarves are one of the first of their kind.
>>
>>162488020
All I can say is that invaders still invade without much history. I received a decent sized siege at the start of year six in a pocket world which genned for 1 or 2 years. I'm not very experienced with sieges, so I don't know if it's more or less than usual.
>>

Pick where you want to build your fort, a region a good distance from civilization. Then go strangle wild animals there. Since whatever you do will probably be among the few historical events that had occured on the region, your dwarves will be predisposed to depicting your activities.

I usually plan on making several forts with different themes and low pop limits.

>small forest outpost mostly focusing on timber trade and hunting
>farming outpost in a plains region growing food and pig tails, main exports are meals, cloth and sheets
>mountain colony with marlbe mining/exporting focus, everything is smoothened, engraved marlbe
>mountain outpost with an ore-mining focus, main exports are armour and weapons, also has pimp militia
>defensive outpost near hostile territory, every inhabitant trains in the militia, excess armor and weapons are traded for food and other supplies
>sprawling underground trade-hub near the entrance to the great caverns with taverns and all
>royal blacksmithing communitiy near the lava sea with legendary militia, producing the highest quality armor and weapons in all of dorfdom
>fishing village near a stream, trading fish and shell crafts, militia is equipped with harpoons (spears)

What do you think I end up with? One fuckhuge multi-level fortress with all the industries crammed into it, slowly dying to FPS death. Then I quit.

>the military screen is so shit
Where the fuck did this meme come from?

There are a lot of shitty screens in the game, but the military screen isn't one of them. It could use some improvements, though. For example, you should be able to view the screens of different dwarves when you add them into squads. Apart from that and some other small things, I'd say the military screen is pretty good. It makes a clear distinction between squads, uniforms, training schedules and burrows, and it lets you play around with all of it. It's a great screen once you learn it.

Best chance at taking it out is having marksdwarves behind Fortifications.

But if you doubt that'll work, use my favorite method:
>lock off the cavern
>wait for siege to happen, bonus points if undead
>allow siege to just go straight through your fort in a walled-off pathway, lock the entrance behind them with bridge
>open cavern bridge
>slowly but surely siege cunts will move towards cavern
>carnage, FB might just die from being attacked from multiple sides at the same time

Worked for me once.
My fort suddenly had a secret labyrinth of pathways surrounding the actual fort, as passages to use when I walled off the most straight-forward path from entrance to cavern
>>

Do it.

Don't bother with youtube tutorials or anything. Just use the guids offered on the wiki if you need some pointers.

It's also more than possible to jump in without using any guides at all, but you should still keep the wiki open in a tab as you play.

Some of the industries in the game can be pretty complex, but in the end, most of it boils down to common sense, and the more basic knowledge of the game tends to be easier to learn.
>>
>>162533260
I recommend using the guide in the OP. It is very outdated, but it makes you get into the core concepts.

Keep the wiki at hand at all times.

Is there any way to make Minotaurs more common on a map?
I want to start a new world and have a fort with a big-ass labyrinth to dump naked prisoners into. Of course, this requires a Minotaur.

But they aren't very common, and considering the beasts your fort attracts are pretty random...
I once had a fort right next to a (inhabited) genned Labyrinth, but the Minotaur never came to raid nor did he die in the meantime
>>
>>162535657
beast attacks have nothing to do with proximity, since they, unlike armies, don't travel. you might just as well get attacked by a beast that lives in the other corner of the world. it's RNG.

I was kinda bored. Have a map for 43.03.
Used a heightmap of the Kerguelen archipelago. Kinda pissed because nearly all the fjords disappeared, and they're a big part of the interesting look. Some islands aren't even islands anymore.
The real islands don't have a single tree or bush, but it wouldn't be much playable like that, let the game put in a fair bit.

The way creatures and material templates currently work should make it easy for the game to recognise the same "parts" of different animals and plants. Completely opposite culures recognize that the taste and texture is blatantly different, while they disagree in a lot of other stuff
Sorry, but it doesnt strectch out that much

mah gentlenigga. I also would want that in the game
I envision Toady will eventually add chemical properties to all materials, which would casually include taste
That way, an animal has a certain taste, and other animals other, and we's aldo have dwarves licking lead for the taste
Exquisite foods and products will make their way in the economy update, that will be the moment where caravans and peddlers sell actual valuable stuff like old wines and fresh cannibally fed demon meat

not him, but everything we experience is ultimately subjective, as all our senses are actualized in our brain. So therefore it's kinda redundant to say that, but there is definitely an objective taste to chicken and other meats.
Also, how have you never tasted chicken? Do you have a disposition that makes it impossible, or are you really that hardcore?

I have no fucking idea of what I'm doing

I have simpler views for the DF, mainly toady stopping being a lazy incompetent piece of shit and botes

talk about unsustained production

I like the part about chemical properties including taste, with a little bit of tinkering, you could actually make it work. Part of me is actually excited about everything in the game having a different taste

Medium size and this is my first try at Dwarf Fortress. I'm fucking confused and this thing is taking it's sweet time.
>>
>>162578762
I just hope toady makes it into something you can get into, but not something you must learn to not have your dorfs commit suicide for not having their favorite breakfast every morning.

>>162578980
If you have a decent PC then its fine, but usually having a small world or even smaller is fine, as long as you have all civs and towers/labyrinths/tombs/biomes as you personally want them. You might want to read the wiki or watch a tutorial series or a LP if a tutorial is too dry for you.

Can the building site be reached? Remember that the pumps you've built all have an unwalkable tile, meaning that they might block the way.

>cannibally fed demon meat
>hedonistic opulence
I thought I was the only one that wanted the game to develop more the 'fine way' of living
It crushes my sould that my poor dwarves cannot enjoy the finest things in life because, well, apart from cool armors, there isnt anything really top-notch of anything
I would be happy if Toady added drugs, and you could barter for a top-quality cocaine-like that comes from the other part of the world
>>
>>162579245
Yeah, what I meant was a totally general thing like
>This dish is remarkably sweet, with some touches of cinnamon
Then If a dwarf likes sugar things, and cinnamon, he'll love the dish
But, for this to happen, sugar and cinnamon must have chemically rawifies properties that tell the flavour
>>

Maybe a dorf was already on his way to hauö them into your stockpile? The hauling job would mean that the screw in question would be temporarily "busy".

Any idea if bashing with the pommel on that thing uses the oak stats?
>>
what are some useful dfhack commands?

only if you know how to get through aquifers.

if you do, then it's a perfect embark, which (potentially) offers everything you could need.

Nah never mind, I just realised I was wrong -
The handle is clearly added as a decoration and not tied in anyway to the weapon's understanding of it's shape.
Attacks don't use specific parts of a weapon, instead weapons are roughly spherical clouds of material that lash out with specific properties.

No you don't. In fact it's so much fun rediscovering past fuckups as an adventurer or fortress reclaim party.
I'd avoid the aquifer. They just aren't fun for learning the game. Fair does if you're committed, but it means basically no digging.

>>
>>162584184
No water on the surface. Sooner or later you will need some, so make sure to dig down to search underground lakes soon enough. And do
>>162584360

Keep an eye on the relevant stocks (alcohol, barrels, seeds) through the stocks screen.
>>
>>162583647
well something that needs to change then
>>162583679
I didnt die on my first fort buddy, you can do it
also, yeah, the fun part of this game is that the world keeps on even if your fort dies, and you can just reclaim it later
>>
>>162582769
Nah, I doubt it would use the decoration stats as that is technically what it is, but yeah, just look at how the item_tool_scroll and rollers and such work, then slap them on weapons, armor, etc.

>This is a masterwork steel breastplate, the padding is cotton, the straps are yak leather, and it is decorated with hanging rings of fungiwood and gypsum.
>>
>>162584659
Does this mean I can walk up to gullible people in adventure mode and offer to trim their armour for free?
>>
>>162584659
Hmmm, I did not actually check to see if you can just add them afterwards.
I just used this with the weapons, put the [PRODUCT_TOKEN:axe] to whichever weapon/armor it is, assign the SPECIFIC:HANDLE or whatnot in the item description, have the helve or padding or whatever in the reaction, slap it together, pow.
[IMPROVEMENT:100:axe:SPECIFIC:HANDLE:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:helve:NONE]
>>
>>162584598

>>
>>162585049

It's like a 75%
>>
>>162585049
Don't bother, just go for it. It won't break your neck unless you're already on your deathbed, and at that point it won't matter either way.

see
>Sure, whatever. You'll die before it makes a difference anyway.

Just start playing. Don't waste your time with optimizations you don't even understand yet.
>>
>>162585289
>Not sure but i always get caverns.
>It's like a 75%
No, it's 100%. ALL embarks in a normal world have access to three different caverns. The only way to end up with less or no caverns is to make a world through advanced worldgen.
>>
Where I can find rundown on all updates? Last time I played was when Toady added Bards, Temples and all that stuff. Are there any interesting new features in fortress mode?
>>
>>162585735
chance to get water in the caverns is not always 100%

Only thing that's missing from the image is 43.05, which added a 64bit executable. Some minor performance gains in specific situations. Also, all memory addresses and more importantly the compiler changed so dfhack and the rapist will take ages until they're updated.

If bees can't live in freezing land, how did Norse get mead?

>>

Cold, not freezing. Freezing would be true arctic conditions, cold would be habitable places like the norse countries.
