High savagery doesn't really do much for adv mode. It only affects what kind of wildlife an area can have, which is probably the least interesting aspect of adv mode, and prevents civs from settling areas that have high savagery. Making worlds with high savagery leads to less civ interaction and bigger/more frequent wild gaps between them. I mean, if you really have to be ambushed by giant dingos instead dingos during that brief skill window when either is really a threat, then a high savagery world is what you want. Otherwise they just make the world less interesting overall for an adventurer.

For example, are liar, intimidator, persuader etc all trained by arguing in adv mode?

Conversation, Comedy, Flatterer, Pacifier, Lying, Intimidation, Consoler, Persuader, and so forth from talking/arguing/asking about feelings/expressing yours but with context stuff playing a role, flattering people when you argue raises it, being persistent and angry about flattery raises intimidation as I recall.

Hello, so I just started DF a few days ago, my dwarves survived their first winter, and are now celebrating the first anniversary of the fortress with glorious dwarven wine.

But in the mean time there was this elven merchant exposing his goods in my depot, and when I tried to expose mine, my retarded keyboard decide to select many random stuff without me (retarded as well) noticing. It makes my dwarves transport stuff for ever, so I decided to remove the depot. Every item that was in it are on the ground and the merchant left just after.

Is it me or did I just acquire all his goods for free ?

Been ages since I played DF. I grabbed the latest version, stuck in my favourite world gen (that volcano near the middle always has a great embark), but upped the population and civs. This is the result.

Look at this carnage. The most bloody war there, "The Conflict of Eviscerators" is still ongoing.
Civilized World Population:
> 889 Dwarves
> 64 Humans
> 331 Elves
> 9791 Goblins
> 10 Kobolds

Total: 11085

I checked out the war page and, well...
There are wars that have been going on for over 100 years, though interestingly enough the most recent war, The Conflcit of Eviscerators, is the most bloodiest and brutal in spite of it being the youngest war.

The Attacker is a goblin civ that has humans in it, while the defender is a dwarf civ.

Here's the world gen parameters if anyone wants: http://pastebin.com/NV8z9s5i

Looking into it some more. All the humans who are alive seem to be necromancers, or combat veterans (some of whom are the sons and daughters of aforementioned necromancers.

For anyone playing, I'd say turn down the beasts a bit, it'll make some more civs survive.

>>
>>162913762
Probably not. It usually takes a lot of provication to get the elves to attack.

Also, dig down. You have tons of vertical space on your map, no need to settle the soil layers. Dwarves living in dirt is unseemly.

>>
>>162913437
I see a lot of dead civs in your world, so the wars that have been going for 100+ years are likely to be mostly wars against those civs. With no one left to make peace with the war is considered to be ongoing even when they have no sites left to conquer and no citizens left to kill.
>>
>>162914616
because the data is only 100MB-ish.
The reason that it's gigs of data as an XML is because
XML FUCKING SUCKS
XML is a lie, all of it, including the X, and the ML.

XML is a fucking cancer, most of that file size is the XML 'tags' that enclose every little bit of data. In XML you often have tags that are larger than the data they contain, and not a little bit larger, a LOT larger. That's why you can compress/archive an XML file down to a tiny little size. Try it, stick that XML file in a .zip, or even better, a .7z. Look at how fucking small it gets.

What are the most vital ways of saving valuable fps? I had about 80 dorfs with constant 100fps until I dug my way into caves. Then it instantly dropped down to 10fps and I couldn't pick it up again until I opened gates and let raid in to murder half of my fort. Now with 35-40 dorfs I manage about 50-60 fps at best.

Caves were a mistake... I bet trolls did it.

less items, less space for creatures to path to, less creatures.

Bronze is better than iron in real life but harder to produce since tin was a limited quantity, iron was just easier to get in bulk and it wasn't until steel making got going that bronze was obsoleted finally.
>>
>>162921535
That will never be significant factor in the number of goblin civs you have. For one, there's no stricture that prevents multiple demons of the same time from being goblin civ rulers. Even if that weren't the case, your demon types would have to be less than 1/5th the number of civs generated for it to make a difference, which would require the player to reduce it by a lot in most advanced worldgen setups. As it is, though, the only way your number of demon types will limit goblin civs is by setting it to 0.
>>
>>162924724
Well, I doubt we can say DF has a middle ages setting anymore.

As early as when Toady added the new towns and hamlets, he was pretty open about the fact that he had looked at maps of early modern cities when designing them.

And now, with the newly added libraries, lots of inventions described in the books are obviously early modern inventions (i.e. camera obscura).

Of course, it will be even moreso once it comes to implementing sea travel.

It would be pretty cool to have different kinds of civilisations and states develop separately in different parts of the world, and when they ultimately encounter each other we might see one of them ending up as a colony of the other.

Stuff like cameras oscuras werent a thing until the renasissance
And as many people, I think Toady will want to add galeons, which as Timbuk pointed out some threads ago, are more of a renaissance thing than a medieval times invention
>It would be pretty cool to have different kinds of civilisations and states develop separately in different parts of the world, and when they ultimately encounter each other we might see one of them ending up as a colony of the other.
That would be so rad. I would love if I could make dwarves access steel age while elves are still starting to make pottery, and most animal people civs still living in mud huts for me to colonize
>>
>>162927027
>Bronze is better than iron in real life
Not really. Some bronzes are better than some irons in real life. On average, iron is usually harder and holds an edge better, and bronze is universally heavier and more resistant to environmental damage. The metal source and smelting methods can have a major impact on the final product.
DF's raws do a good job of approximating that, making them very nearly equivalent in terms of efficacy as weapon and armor material. I doubt we'll ever see regional differences in material composition to any degree that would make one source of iron (for example) stronger or more easily worked than any other, so the raw values as they stand now will probably not change much.

Right now. You can mod any civ to have (or not have) access to any existing "techs" you want, and you can add new techs to your heart's content. Allowed building/allowed reaction/ allowed profession entity tokens together can radically alter a civ's ability to use and access almost any material in the game.

Romans didn't colonized. They assimilated, invaded, murdered or bought.
It seems most people here are having trouble to see difference between settling, military conquest and colonization.

the chinese definitely did things that could be considered colonization by modern standards. redefining "colony" to "military protectorate" is semantical, especially when there was a large movement of cultural artifacts into these locations. nice poetry.

From what I've read he built fortresses and cities around them to stablish his presence in a very hostile region during the goosechase after the traitor bessus. Again like some other dude said you people are thinking military conquest and colonization are the same thing. They are not. And taking things so far back into the bronze age when there wasn't even the idea of a nation and talking about colonization is presumptuous highschooler logic at best.
>>
>>162929894
considering a large amount of "colonies", particularly african and american ones, had arbitrary borders that remained post-colonization defined by their colonists and were only meant to harvest resources, yes, I consider the differences you are drawing to be arbitrary and your arguments semantical.

europe likes to make their brand of stuff look different and superior from other people's stuff. the fact that europe is a "continent" is a prime example of how deep this mentality runs.

as in having a three-dimensional map object of any specific spot in the game viewable, as if you were in fortress mode. having a tile-by-tile map including walls and objects where creatures occupy tiles is important for dnd-style tabletop gaming. there aren't any map generators out there as sophisticated as dwarf fortress.

yeah you could easily use a map like this as a resource for building a city for your party to have encounters in, but you would have to build the maps for encounters manually, even though the engine supports this feature in fortress mode.

I've DMed quite a few games, and if I could zoom in locally on sites with ease, as well as get into the caverns(underdark), I would never use anything but dwarf fortress again when generating encounter maps. if there was creature/character/artifact information available on these maps as well, I expect DF would start seeing tabletop play regularly once someone designed a system. it would save DMs literally up to 95% of their time in game design, nothing is more tedious than encounter maps.

It's tricky. For one, since you have an odd number of dwarves you'll only have 3 pair, with one being foreveralone. Two, dwarves will only marry with 10 (I think) years of their own age, so you have to either get really lucky or embark scum a million times until you have 3 compatible pairs. Simply being the right ages isn't enough; they also need compatible personality traits, and some shared prefs makes it easier as well. Then you have to get them to actually hook up, which dwarves with even a moderate workload won't do. Honeymoon suites are the way to go for this. Basically jail cells built and stocked for two that you confine your pairs to until they decide to get married. They need to be idle, and able to socialize, while also meeting incidental needs. This can take a long time. Months or years. Luckily you have a foreveralone fortbitch to keep them supplied in the meantime. You'll need to wall in to keep migrants out, and an easy no-fuss way to kill them, and your foreveralone will need to take time out to make slabs for them. You'll want to avoid trade to keep from attracting more migrants and passing the strange mood threshhold, and should probably ignore the liaison as well.
If you can do all that, you'll get babies eventually, and then wait 12 years for them to grow up and repeat the process with gen 2.

I've encountered an extremely weird problem. I'm not sure how to best describe it, but basically, I'm trying to construct something (literally anything, but specifically two floor tiles or maybe a single wall tile in the middle of wide open dug-out space on top of rough cave floor, nothing special at all), and at a specific location the construction cursor just bugs out and shows "no access to building material", even though it's literally a wide open floor with plenty of access.

The exact situation is this: down at the magma sea, I have a couple of levels mined out, so there's like 3 floors above each other, and lots of staircases leading to a completely safe and walled-off underworld. On one of the lower levels, just above the magma sea, there is an area of space where the cursor starts showing "no access to building material". Like a line that you cross, and after that you can't build anything anymore - for absolutely no reason. There's smoothed stone floor, there's diorite around, it's really completely accessible - no holes, no open space, no nothing. If I move the cursor further into this dead-zone of not having any access to building materials, it sometimes switches to a green cursor on single, disconnected tiles, allowing me to build there - but the only building materials it shows is diorite (there is some diorite scattered on the wide open floor), but with a distance of -15130, and a number of 100, not 99 like I thought the max was, but 100. What is going on here?

I'm on 40.24 and extremely attached to this fort, and I definitely don't want to abandon it. But I'm moving everyone down into a hell palace, and I want to continue digging out the entire map and eventually fill the magma sea (I've already started in parts). But what the fuck is going on?
>>
>>162966110

If you were playing 34.11 I would understand, there were some game mechanics that were changed radically in .40 that not everyone liked. But .42+ was a strict improvement on .40.24. i can't just flat out upgrade, right? i mean, won't it be weird? i'm mostly concerned about the wear and tear on armor that was introduced, since my military is in full adamantine. they don't really see any combat anymore, but... can i just flat out upgrade? i mean, i know i won't get some new things like books and paper reactions and stuff, but i'm wary of some other things that were changed... i couldn't name something explicitly, but i feel like a whole lot of things where changed, and i really wanted to finish this fortress before moving on.

and the thing is, the pathfinding worked fine all this time - i've dug out sooo much of the map, too. it's really just this particular area. i'm scared of changing the lives of my dwarves too much, they've become extremely complacement in their sort of utopia. i guess i'm specifically concerned about the new needs system, i feel like i have too many dwarves for them too start with all these abstract needs and wearing of crafts. ideally i'd really stay with them in olden times until their story is done, but i guess if there's no way around it... isn't there?

picture is the partly obsidianized magma they started digging into before stopping.

thank you so so much for this. i'm heartbroken, but i guess i'll have to upgrade... i really wanted to avoid the needs system and armor degradation, as well as the entire locations thing, but i guess i don't have a strong enough reason not to.

but: won't it be weird for the dwarves? they don't have any temples or taverns or anything like that. they just had freeflowing booze everywhere, 43.x seems like such a drastic change to their lifestyle. what will i need to change for them? just constructing a few locations (tavern, temple), and providing them with wearable crafts for "feeling extravagant", is that it? and i can't have a scholars or books or libraries ever, right?

>>162967686

Temples/taverns/libraries are as simple as putting down a zone literally anywhere. There's nothing else to do. You obviously have plenty of space for it. They can be as arbitrarily large or small as you want. You're kind of right about libraries, they won't be of any use to you probably, but maybe dwarves will ponder/discuss things? Not sure, let us know if you try.
It really is as simple as just updating. Copy/paste your region folder and you're golden. It will take a little time for your fort to move into the new swing of things, and one update changed how weavers path during web collecting jobs in a way thay won't carry over into new saves. If your weavers walk through every web they see on the way to the one they want to collect, that's why. Other than these things everything should be fine.
>>
>>162968463
Oh, uh, and make mugs. Put a couple of chests in each location zone, like you did for your hospital.

Curious how moving to 64 bit would help, and the wear only applies to damage, not time based wear on armor.

To wear candy you need to bash it with better than candy stuff basically.

So what's the word on dfhack for the 64bit version? I haven't been following since spring or so.

hmmm, thanks. i'm not too concerned with providing grand facilities, but i'm worried how my dwarves will adjust. so temple and taverns will be all i need to construct to fulfill their new needs? will they have a need for scholarly thinking as will, and if so, would i ever be able to fulfill it without any paper?

is it really that simple? they just want a tavern and a temple, and optionally a library? for some reason i thought there were a few more changes with their psyche. so i really only have to worry about potential bad thoughts from lack of tavern or temple?

>>162968773
yeah, i've been really curious about that too... so realistically, adamantine won't ever degrade in fights against goblins, because they will never be able to damage it? i haven't had a fall in a while, but my dwarves do generally like to tumble down holes. a large fall still means i'd have to reforge their armor, right?

thanks for everything, guys.
>>
>>162969102
There are additional needs, yeah. But nothing that requires any features you'll be missing in order to deal with.
>>
>>162969102
>so realistically, adamantine won't ever degrade in fights against goblins, because they will never be able to damage it?
Almost. Their strikes won't damage it, but being knocked down or dodging into walls can, depending on the density of the material being hit and how hard the dorf hits it. Should be rare, but not impossible.

>for some reason i thought there were a few more changes with their psyche
There were tons of changes that all end up boiling down to just needing a tavern and temple. Actually, if your fort is running well enough in other areas, you don't even need those. The only emotional need I can think of that can't be fulfilled without the new locations is the need to pray. But not all dwarves care about god(s), and the ones that do can put up with not worshiping if everything else is going OK. They just will work slower/worse.

Some dwarves have a need for abstract thinking, and fulfilling it properly without any books might be tricky. You can assign a dwarf as a scholar and he'll just sit there pondering things, but I don't think dwarves can do that on their own to fulfill their personal needs. It's possible that if you have a bunch of scholars, they can discuss things with the plebs, giving happy thoughts for everyone. You'll have to try it out yourself.

It's not a crippling problem either way. Temples and taverns are really easy, and should definitely work, so most dwarves should be at least content. Worst-case scenario, some dwarves will be distracted and work slightly slower.

so i upgraded from 0.40.24 to 0.43.05, it didn't change a thing. i mean, i did go up from 6 to silky smooth 7 fps, but i still can't construct anything on arbitrary tiles. exact same symptoms, a lot of tiles in that spot near the magma sea just can't be built on for lack of access to building materials, and the few random tiles within that "dead zone" that can be built on just show the negative diorite again. it didn't change anything, so i don't think it's that bug...

this sucks extremely hard, i went through a lot of vanilla crashes (treebranches...) and fps hardships, but it never became flat out unplayable. is there anything i can still try? i wanted to avoid retiring because i really can't afford to lose any dwarves.
>>
>>162974250
Do you have temperature turned off?
>>
>>162974357
no, but i once had it off for a while. strangely didn't have any impact on fps at all, so i turned it back on. it's been on for a while, but it was off for a few playsessions a few weeks ago.
>>
>>162974026
Just more in depth bashing of swords and armor together and shit.
>>
>>162974250
I mean, you're venturing into pioneer territory when you start terraforming entire maps. it's possible you've come across some sort of conflict in the design that's uncommon as your fort has ran for so long. maybe consider uploading the file and doing a bug report.
>>
>>162974250
it's weird, the bug got a bit better - i could only locate the one tile that showed a negative distance for the single diorite listing. the other inexplicably accessible spots in the sea of forbidden constructions only show 1-4 diorite now, or occasionally all the building materials that i actually have access to. there really aren't any holes or anything that would disrupt pathing, like smoke or whatever. some arbitrary cavern floor tiles just can't be built on, and they're all clustered around this area. but it seems to me that there are more accessible tiles there now in general, and the material list for those ghost tiles doesn't seem as extremely bugged anymore.

still, i'm having the same problem. the only option i could think of at this point is moving everyone to hell and caving in the entire map on top of the magma sea. i'm beyond lost here.

>>
>>162974250
I'd suggest that you make a couple backups from the savefile, and proceed to try basically everything. Cave in the floors. Drop test dwarves to the unpathable tiles from above to see if they can move. Build some walls in tiles you can reach, just to distract the pathfinding algorithm. There's no reason to assume any of it will work, but you might as well give it a shot.
>>
>>162974747
but i just turned a tiny bit of the magma sea into obsidian, that can't be that weird. digging out the first layer also doesn't seem super out of the ordinary.

>>162975030
yeah, i guess i have to. i just wish it weren't so frustrating. i spent way more time fighting the game's bizarre technical issues rather than actually facing any problems ingame. all this arbitrary bullshit really sucked the fun out of it now, i've built some walls and messed with traffic designations and started teleporting dwarves in, but it's obvious that this is just how things are now, and how they will be forever. maybe someday i'll somehow manage to retire and unretire the thing without losing almost all dwarves, or maybe repainting everything to open space or whatever... but this whole affair is just so arbitrary and inscrutable. i can already see myself wasting hours with pointless testing, knowing it won't change a thing. this constant reality of being only able to play the game in a very specific way, not the way that you want to play it, it's so exhausting.

still, thanks for everyone's help. if anyone still has any ideas how to fix it, it would be immensely appreciated. but i'm probably already too bitter to keep having fun despite this bug.

Hey /dfg/. I haven't posted here in like over 1 year or almost 2. It's been a long time. This is still by far my favourite general. Most chill, best dwarfriends and a joy to read.

That said I wanna talk about picture related. Now I know the general for that game died, but I also know a lot of us dwarfs lurked there for good reason. Sometimes you don't want a steak dinner but a tiny cupcake and that's what that game is for me.

This is something they are going to add in the next big update, which is supposed to be the biggest update so far. I'm looking forward to it. Just spend a few days playing the old patch 15 and experimenting on drugs and deep mining.

That being said it's been 2 whole years since I played dwarfs. So much seems to have changed. I think I'll have to get into dwarfs soon if this new update isn't coming out soon.

You guys know what would be cool?

A world viewer utility that projects the detailed map on a sphere, and then lets you explore it like in Google earth. By using the height map, you should also be able to slightly alter the shape of the sphere according to the terrain.

You should also be able to choose how much of the planet is covered by the map. For unipolar worlds, it would be natural to have the map go from one of the poles to the equator, and for bipolar worlds, it should be stretched between both poles.

The only problem is that map projection isn't accounted for by the world generator, which will result in distortions and lost detail near the poles.

Even with this problem in mind, it would still be a pretty cool utility.

Its somehow one of the directions of the game
Its not strictly oriented towards that tho, so dont worry
>>
>>163000676
I wrote a really dope teacher-student suggestion that will probably be how it will implemented
It involves the player having the chance of making the teacher crazy if you asign to him more students than he can take care of
>>
>>163001283
It shouldn't be just the number of students, though. What would drive you crazier, 5 good students or 1 bad student?
>>
>>162994201
technically you could, but you'd need to asign all objects in the game to the raws for it to be used
>>
>>163001404
This is my reasoning

>Low level teacher
Teaches poorly(low speed) and without care(low stress received and may give bad thoughts to students)
>High level teacher
Teaches well (higher speed) and cares for students (Has stress(to a point) and gives good thoughts)
>Low level student
Learns slowly (low speed) and without care (gives stress to teacher)
>High level student
Learns quickly (higher speed) and cares (doesnt give teacher stress and may give him good thoughts)

Also, a teacher is more able to teach more students the better teacher he is
Therefore, If you place a master level teacher in front of 50 bad students, he may start killing students
>>
If mod steel to be as sharp as adamantine, will it become the superior material for cutting and stabbing weapons because its higher density will give it more chopping and piercing power?
>>
>>163001050
It's still pretty hard to make out what you're getting at, but I'll make a guess: there was iron there on the earlier embarks.

You should have said it explicitly. It's not other anons' fault that you can't express yourself properly.

Also, try not to be so aggressive. You're shitting up the mood in the general.
>>
>>163001848
There's more to it than just skill and aptitude, though. If the student doesn't want to learn (whether in general or about the specific subject), that'll make them a bad student. Similarly, a teacher who's not passionate about teaching is going to be a bad teacher. And let's not forget about the potential for personality conflicts.
>>
>>163002364
Yeah of course
It was a short version of the sugg. It should also take in consideration curiosity, likeness of the teacher for what he does (Imagine all those hating-nature dwarves put to teach planting, they would be horrible), and etc.
That last part actually is pretty interesting, because it's a direct effetc of the culture of the dwarves, were usual teachers are nature hating, and thus, would make students learn it slowly or directly hate it even more
>>
>>163002803
Eh, I don't think nature hating would have an effect on planting because agriculture definitely isn't part of nature. Now, herbalism on the other hand....

The last one happens already.
There's no way to get civvies to equip items that have an armor level without enlisting them. There's no way to restrict what kind of clothing a creature wears except by enlisting them. Well, you could probably figure out a complex burrows/stockpile linking scheme to assign civilian uniforms, but it would be a micromanagement nightmare to set up and keep running.

I'm moderately sure that the change from the entire population of the world being histfigs to just maybe a half dozen per site made the goblins murdering each other into a non-issue for their population. That happened back in 2010 though, so it might not be relevant to whatever you're thinking about. I don't know how much of various other things like body size are taken into account in worldgen.

I still wish the populations weren't so abstracted, or at least that it were handled better. I suspect that the game not properly handling non-histfigs becoming and/or interacting with histfigs is the cause of a lot of the weird problems we often see in adventure mode, like people watching murders take place in front of them without batting an eye, asking you to kill someone and then spitting on you and calling you a murderer when you do and many other such things.

It would be cool if the game could pull entire families out of the abstract pops, and not just single individuals.

Having 99% of all people in the game have no family makes the world feel pretty dead.

Have you tried expanding the list to see if it's just some of the 200 diorite that are weird? I'm not sure if it'd work, but it's worth a shot.

I recently saw something like this happen in my fort (0.43.04) but I think it was due to the area being on fire. Interestingly, every time I retried designating the floor the granite block was a different distance away, despite not even unpausing it inbetween. Also, I have only one granite block in my fortress (it's imported).

One more thing: I don't know how you're getting your screenshots to have such large filesizes, but running that one >>162966110
through optipng got it down to about 10kb, a 99% reduction. You might want to try that.
>>
>>163012047
>That just sounds retarded, especially if elves and humans have needs and a lifespan.

From what I can tell goblins are inherently supernatural creatures and might have a link to Hell. Like uh, they only show up upon the creation of a demonic spire. So it stands to reason that unlike traditional goblins which are just angry green monkeys, DF goblins are more like an unnatural bio-weapon created by demons to aid them in the conquest of the world.
>>
>>163012687
World populations are much larger now. Populations had to be abstracted for simulating things on the scale that the game has already reached, to say nothing of the intended scope of the simulation in the future.
>>
>>163012047
Elves also live forever sempai.

Also, in vanilla DF, goblin civs can't arise without the help of a demon ruler. This might imply that the goblins themselves have at least a partially demonic nature.

Depends on the races, it seems.
My dwarves are constantly 90% histfigs, elves close to that, humans a good 50% and goblins peak at 5% tops.

>>163013021
Oh. I assumed they'd kinda work like stereotypical goblins or like LotR's orcs.
If they do work like that, they're kinda just... annoying? Like bogeymen. I find it hard to justify that kind of things. It's really silly that the longer your history is, the more goblins there'll be, and the more other races they'll destroy.
Maybe I'll mod them into being orcs instead? Human-sized, rather strong with a weaker constitution, and they'd need to eat and have a natural lifespan.
>>
>>163013659
I usually just mod their civ files so there is a hard limit on how many goblin civs can be in a world. They still typically end up as the most numerous race, but they aren't so numerous as to be overwhelming.
>>
>>163013659
>My dwarves are constantly 90% histfigs, elves close to that, humans a good 50% and goblins peak at 5% tops.
Is there any science on this?

If you used the fort mode interface to check wether your dorfs had relatives, then you should probably consider the fact that the game tends to put more hist figs in the migrant waves. They aren't representative of the larger population.

For the humans, I'd say that you're dead wrong. Most of the humans I ever saw were just random, relativeless losers hanging out houses and shops.
>>
>>163013067
>>163012687
Honestly, I feel like the game would be better if populations were smaller and entirely histfigs. The change from all histfigs to mostly abstracted pops was, I think, the worst thing Toady ever did to the game by a large margin. Yeah, it might be a bit odd to have each hamlet populated by just ten people, half of whom are mayor, sherrif etc, but it'd work better than having dozens of mindless drones populating each place, all of whom literally came from nowhere and belong nowhere.

I've actually got quite a bit more I could say on this subject, but I need to get lunch. I may or may not elaborate at some future time.

The only time I did any serious messing around with worldgen much was in early 2010 when I made a world with a lot of marshes and then embarked on a sinister one with no equipment. That was a lot of fun.

I also generated a 10000 year old pocket world with no civs shortly before 0.42.01 was released, which was interesting.

Sadly, I don't currently have access to either of the machines I did those on, so I can't remind myself of how the heck I stumbled onto the proper settings for them. I don't have a great understanding of how to do worldgen stuff, so I haven't done anything lately beyond setting the end date and increasing the number of megabeasts, semi-megabeasts, and night creatures in a world I generated for adventuring in.

All this talk about the combat system gave me an idea
So I was watching evangelion this afternoon, and in the first battle, the angel grabs shinji by the face and does a special atack where a retractable-like organic needle pops out of his palm, and stabs the eva-01
Now I know that this is impossible with the current body creation system, but do you think that it will be in the future
I mean, the game kinda understands tortoises retracting in the shell, why cant it understand kitty claws or angel's needles
It pains me because it would be a rad weapon and an almost undodgeable atack, literally spawning a stab atack in front of your face

Its a concept slightly weird to consider
If it was first expanding the needle from a body-part, and then using that new bodypart to atack someone, say, when you grab him by the face, that could be fairly easy
But expanding, therefore atacking, and retracting the needle in one turn? thats complicated
Things like the cat claws you mentioned seem easier to implement

not related to the mood, but you should probably give your dorfs some more comfort, like proper bedrooms, a good dining room, and goblets/mugs if you haven't already. Dorfs are fairly hardy and won't go into tantrums too much, but its better to keep your dorfs happy as I believe it increases work speed. Temples are also really easy to make as you just need to designate a large open area, and boxes or whatever are not truly needed for praying.

In my experience, this doesn't happen.

Am I the only one who just embarks wherever and don't try to make the ideal map? My goal is if the place has no coal or materials I need, I build up a trading fort that specializes in making some wealth while building up defenses.

If I DO get everything I need and want, then I become a greedy shut in that kills everything that comes even near my fort.

Seldom do I make something in between these. If the land provides, I become a monster. If the land doesn't, I fall into a passive play mode.

Only one thing I care about when embarking is the landscape and if the stones are nice. I dig deep and greedily.

Funny fact: if you prevent a town building civ from using wood, they'll build their houses out of smoothed bedrock instead.

It's good to know if you want some cultural difference to spice up the game.

This is also probably why settlements that got captured by bandits had their buildings turn into stone: the bandit entities simply can't use wood.

Actually, when you're told that a criminal organisation "has a town", it just means that they're hiding in that town.

The few times bandits actually DO conquer towns, it's when the town in question has already been ruined and abandoned.

Basically, just search the underground(dungeons, catacombs, sewers) for the criminals. Most of the time there's several gangs in each city, so I recommend that you bring a local guide to tell you about the structure (and thus occationally say which gang is hiding there).
>>

Ok faggets, let's play what I call the 'DF update game'

It's very easy and fun! it has three steps to perform
First, you go here

and see if Toady has updated the game

second, you cry for 2 hours straight out of pure desesperation, and post a phrase where you define your feelings for toady

Third, you go here

You drown your feelings reading the interesting additions the game'll have and report with your favourite findings

I'll start:

The conclusion was probably not very accurate. That was based on a single round of tests. The screencapped test there was done by the guy trying to get him to use a script for assigning attributes. I don't think testanon did anymore tests after that.
In any case, one set of tests is hardly a basis for establishing attribute value.

Since nobles refuse to do any work they should be either
A - awesome warriors with their own equipment
B - have awesome social/administrative skills and be able to console, motivate and organize dorfs.

BTW i hate that you cant disable elections - i hate the notion that my great expedition leader who bled and toiled from the begining with the rest of my Founding Fathers and Mothers is replaced by some random tresher fag from Xth migrant wave ...
>>
>>163101983
Well, the alternative is that your expedition leader who no doubt has some actually useful skills, can't get any work done because more and more of his time is being taken up by consoling others while your thresher continues to be a useless thresher.
>>
>>163101765
>>163101983
Can't we just have both a mayor and a useless noble? Not sure what the noble'd do, though. "Own" the fortress and you're actually playing him then, and not some omniscient mind-control observer?

I'm pretty sure it has an effect. I think word-of-mouth might spread when tavernvisitors leave.
I don't have any other proof than an anecdote, tho.
I once killed the sole 3 elves that visited my taverns at the start. No other elves came by, except for those visiting in a performance group.
I wasn't at war with the Civ, but I do think simply no one felt like visiting after it. I did get a metric shitton of human visitors tho

Lazy nobles stopped being a thing like 5 or 6 years ago. The entity token still exists, it just doesn't do anything. I've seen my champion in my current fort take a job just called "Noble" 3 or 4 times in the last 15 years (though the duchess never has, interestingly), but aside from that, every noble will do every job assigned to them, and that's been the case for ages.

Are you doing combatants with a flat 1k attribute range like testanon was?
Also, maybe try repeating the test with boosted armor user. I'm curious if armor encumbrance is boosting strength's impact.

It's been a very long time since someone entered the age of emptiness.

I know very little about raw editing, but if possible, could someone make me a race/creature to play with that I can use to max exterminate everything? Some usful addons would be:
>not having to breathe
>not having to eat or drink
>being made of something that is almost is night impossible to kill

I just want something to plop into my raws, start up adventure mode, pick the thing, and be done with it and get onto the killing.

They all had 1000 base attributes set by the script, only the boosted stat was higher, and they had competent fighter/wrestler/striker/kicker/dodger/armor so they'd beat each other up and make it come down to the stats instead of the naked tests of who gave in to pain/suffocated first.

Boy, I've had no time for tests, is somebody replacing me already?

Anyway, here are the results of some tests I did

Out of 100 round the human won 49 times and the human300str won 51. In the second set the human won 30 and the human300str won 70

Out of 100 rounds the human won 44 times and the human300agi won 56. In the second set the human won 56 times and the human300agi 44.

Out of 100 round the human won 43 times and the human300end won 57 times, in the second set the human won 41 times and the human300end 59.

Interesting results in the test with the human300str.

Agi+500 w/grandmaster armor: 44 dead
Tou+500 w/grandmaster armor: 41 dead
End+500 w/grandmaster armor: 30 dead

Same basic distribution except MY FUCKING ARMOK THE TESTS TAKE SO LONG, FUCK!

>>163113125
Nah, just trying some of the higher attribute values in the mean time.
>>
>>163113936
Going back to test with the competent armor user briefly:

foc+500: 55 dead
wil+500: 52 dead
int+500: 59 dead
spa+500: 47 dead
kin+500: 44 dead

I don't think armor user affecting encumbrance alone explains this, btw, both users should be tiring at the same rate, but the grand master users got a lot more "use" out of their armor, the battles with lower skill tend to be much quicker with only a few stragglers chewing each other to death vs twenty or so laying their unconscious before waking up to chew on their opponent.

pickaxes are sharp and have high penetration values, and the weapon skill used is mining, which is really easy for miners to train.

im aware of stuff like that, but i thought it only occurs if you try to assign woodcutter dwarf to axe dwarf in military, or hunter to marksdwarf.

my goal is to just not have a military at all, and have every single dwarf in my fortress to be wondering around with a pickaxe all day every day and sitting at legendary skill.

maybe they'll all scatter when i get invaded, or maybe half of them will swarm the invaders and start chopping shit up.

Find the line "[CREATURE:COLOSSUS_BRONZE]" in creature_standard.txt which should be found in a pathway that looks like this:

"Dwarf Fortress\data\save\***REGION NAME***\raw\objects\creature_standard.txt" Where ***REGION NAME*** means whatever you named the world.

Note this is NOT the Dwarf Fortress\raw\objects folder which won't work until your next worldgen.

Add [OUTSIDER_CONTROLLABLE] in between 2 existing lines. You should also add [INTELLIGENT] so you can level up skills. E.g.

[NO_DIZZINESS]
[OUTSIDER_CONTROLLABLE] <---
[INTELLIGENT] <---
[NO_FEVERS]

And you can now play as a bronze colossus when you start a new adventure mode character. People will attack you on sight but if your goal is genocide this isn't an issue. Armour won't fit you as you're 330x larger than a dwarf, but you won't need it because you're bronze. Weapons work normally but you won't start with a backpack so you'll only be able to carry things in your hands or strapped to your upper body. Also since you never tire feel free to always be sprinting.

If you want to do this for non-humanoid entities you'll probably want to add [CANOPENDOORS] because if not you won't be able to open doors and your time as a dragon or roc will be pretty dull if people can just flee inside a house.

Note if you decide to play the game world regularly you'll have intelligent bronze colossi but I can't think of any particularly bad things they can do that regular ones won't.
>>
>>163130080

I believe slade is so heavy that these colossi would be more vulnerable to falling damage than regular bronze colossi. It might be possible to cripple the slade colossus with a cave-in trap.

If you want to make it even more devastating, why not give it a dragon's fire immunity with: [FIREIMMUNE_SUPER]. You can go on to just flat out give it dragon breath by copy-pasting the CDI from the dragon. [CAN_DO_INTERACTION:MATERIAL_EMISSION] Include all of its sub-raws and change the [CDI:BP_REQUIRED:BY_CATEGORY:MOUTH] to [CDI:BP_REQUIRED:BY_CATEGORY:NOSE] or some body part that the slade colossus has (they lack mouths).
>>

I conceptually like the idea of it breathing fire out of its nose, but you're right it's possible to make it require no body part.

>>163138191
Sorry, I meant the actual impact from falling, which I think is amplified by the creature's weight but I'm not sure.

That being said if you're going to have to deal with a slade colossus you probably want to just kill it instantly as opposed to cripple it.
