"There is no way the 21 year old girl I just sacrificed 77 blood slaves to turn into a 473 years old Vampire Lord is this cute even though she is also my little sister and the school student president!" edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Well, if a vampire is 473/1250 years to reach old age, and the standard old age for a human is at 50 and we assume the same equivalent time frame for maturity rather than simply aging more slowly once reaching adulthood, then they're the equivalent of about 19 which, while young, is still physically mature.

Compare this to Pale Ones, which are in the range of 80/400 or the equivalent of 10 year olds if we make the same assumption about analogous development (which doesn't really apply, since we already know that pale ones do have a radically different life cycle).

Food for thought

It's a war game where you can put up a second sun because the damn bats stole the first one. Multiplayer games heavily revolve around diplomacy, but the mechanics are opaque and you can always learn something new in the game. The devs forgot how they coded Fear auras. The best laid plans can be disrupted by the outbreak of a War in Hell that spills over onto the world. Pretty much every nation has some sort of end-game magic that will make the world a terrible place for your particular people to live.

Entire armies can be taken down by traps using the right magic. A geared up giant mage can carve through nigh infinite numbers of mere soldiers, but get lit up or even enslaved by enemy mages. You can't trust elves, bats, birds, furries, or beastfolk, and you need to eliminate all blood nations and undead before they destroy the world.

I've done a pretty piss poor job at making those questions easy to answer.

Check the main page in a few for a link to a stripped down DM. You can use that in the inspector to easily see what the remaining nations have. Sometime in the future, I'll also have a link to something that'll let you easily get information on your neighbors and the map.

All I've managed to do this turn is kill some enemy commanders thanks to demonbred wich I actually really like. And kill 48 bats at the cost of 22 units and a mage, wich was half my army
Other than that fuck this nation and fuck this game
My resources and income have been trash from the start despite having prod 3, maybe it's because i only have 4 neighboring provinces connected to my cap, or something. Troglodytes are top tier tramplers with piles of hp. They will fairly easily kill 25 PD of any nation. Sounds like you didn't expand particularly well if you're having extreme money issues, and fighting bats is about baiting them with shield-men and fire elementals and burning them to shit once their lances are spent. Abysia is probably one of the weaker nations in the game, not for the faint of heart.
>>
>>162536372

'least i got em fireball spells though :')

>>162536039

Don't bully me for my scales remember it's a noob game

>>
>>162536727
>no order
Order is your big money maker. You dont really need too many guys as abysia anyway. Your guys will walk through indies. 15ish guys should take out most indy provinces without too much bother.
>>
>>162536323
Does the format work?
Is it easy to understand that +200% means +2 in a path?
>>
>>162536420

They're slow at expansion compared to many nations. You need a big pile of them to conquer provinces, even if you can do so reliably once you have that pile, and they are high in res-cost. They are 'badass' at expansion only if you are terrible at expansion and don't understand arrow baiting etc.

>>162536727

Fireball isn't a great spell. Abysia is actually worse at fireball than nations with Wind Guide or Eagle Eyes, or with fireballs that don't cost huge piles of gold each for extraneous crap you don't care about. Generally fire elementals are a better choice, you can mix them with infantry more easily due to fire resistance, and they offer more bang for your mage buck, at a ruinous cost in gems you should have a lot of.

Prod is less important for abysia than for many other heavy infantry nations because all your shit costs so much you can't afford the extra infantry your res could let you buy. The game I won as MA Aby I took a dormant focused rainbow to make soul contracts, money scales, a bit of prod to help expansion, and misfortune.
>>
>>162537476
It works. I think I see something like "2(ABNW)" more, but it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>162537551
>They're slow at expansion compared to many nations.
Mate I'm abysia in a game now and I've taken 11 provinces with my starting army alone. And they are about to take another this turn.
>>
>>162537747
And they would have taken more but I had to double back for a couple turns.
>>
>>162537747

That's great. You got really, really, really lucky that your starting army didn't get cut off by other nations and that there's still places to expand to by turn 11 (or later?) or you're on a hugemap, or you're playing SP. That's not good advice to give to people that they can rely on super luck or SP-levels of empty space in MP games.

4 Vans with w9 can sail, stealth, and take out just as much or more than Abysians can. Or one turn's worth of vanhere. That's a great expansion. If Abysian expansion runs headfirst into an expander pretender or a nation's army that can kill it (giants for example), or it turns out there were 20 heavy cavalry in that province not the 3-4 you thought, they are totally fucked. If they get cut off, it takes turns of marching slowly to get to another expansion frontier. It takes 4+ turns to build enough troops for even a weak expansion party. They have no flexibility of expansion and not great expansion speed.

>>
>>162542603
Magic Enhanced spits on usual national balance and throws it out of the window. Try Abysia, for instance.
>>
>>162538135
If 'many' nations do better than them, comparing them to a nation with moderate expansion would show that better than comparing them to nations which are solidly in the top 5.

Abysia has poor mobility on expansion parties, but they start off with an amazing army and their expansion parties can kill tough indies easily.

>If Abysian expansion runs headfirst into an expander pretender or a nation's army that can kill it (giants for example)
Abysian troops are scary. Pretenders will likely die after quickly falling asleep from heat aura. Giants will fare the same.

U w0t.

You meed B/D pretender for vamp counts, money scales, and that's it. Win early fights with evo 5-7 (cascade spam/iron shit/RoS), then go full blood mode (you'll have to bloodhunt with your pretender early probably) and summon infinite bloodhunters that summon infinite patrollers. Then empower your luminardi into S/B and go for AC end-game.
>>
>>162524359
I was going to make a Vampire Lord edition but all the vampire pictures I found on google were depressing and scary so I thought to look for a cute vampire and here we are.
>>
>>162544776
S1 can spam stellar cascades with Light of the Northern Star, Black Priests can cast Iron Blizzard. Both have few counters, and are devastating when deployed in large numbers. Those two will form the core of your spellcasting for early-midgame, while you work on getting into blood.

Your lategame is all vampires and horrors, so your national mages aren't going to be a big deal.

If you need diversity on top of horrors and vampires for lategame (you probably won't), you can forge crystal matrices to put non-astral mages into communions and have first-tier act as communion slaves to boost their level. That will give you acceptable combat access to every path but water.

Bull god in it's own dominion kills them. All tramplers do. Similarly, fear gods do it usually, depends on morale rolls. Avvite chariots kill abysians, avvite spearmen do it too. Anakites turn them into paste. Garmhirdings wreck them. Vans in tiny groups have trouble with them, but vanhere wreck them. Thed sacreds kill them. I've seen Heart Companions kill them.

They also pick up afflictions quite fast even when facing stuff that cannot kill them. A few battles in and they are much flimsier as half of them are missing arms or have chest wounds.

Abysia is better in ME but not overpowered, simply good. Fomoria and Xiblahblah and Ragha and Bery and shit are still better by a lot.

>>162540513

Try testing it with afflicted abysians. You'll find they perform significantly more poorly.

Y'all bitches need to stop telling noobs to play a weak nation with serious flaws and nothing going for it but 'can kill indies without any thought or archer use'. Tell them to play strong nations, not weak ones. Noob-stomping is bad, m'kay.
>>
>>162551527
Half of them have afflictions numbnuts, they just fought their way through successive waves of heavy cavalry. Why would you test them when they are crippled anyway? I'm not testing fomoria. How are they likely to bump into a bull in its own dominion while they are expanding?

Find me a single indy province that they cant take out that isnt full of mages or a throne and then we'll see if they are bad expanders.

Considering if you're not a dumbfuck you'll generally send your expander god somewhere it's nearby presence has given it at least 1 candle, about as often as people take trampler expander gods, which is still fairly often given I see bulls and boars every game. And given your slow-ass abysians mean if you balk from every possible bump, you're going to have shit-all territory on most maps.

I've played a lot of Abysia. I've had abysian starting armies die to heavy cav, i've had them die to woodsmen, i've had them die to xbows, i've had them die to random cloud mages, i've had them die to elephants, i've had them die to horse tribe light lances, i've had them die to all kinds of shit. Even tribals. Slap enough afflictions on abysian and he pretty much is going to die to whatever.
>>
>>162553067

Yeah mang cause 30 healthy fullblood abysians is what every abysian player has to take provinces in every turn, at no point do you devolve to like 11 limping crippled abysians because their high strength and decent armour still takes hits from spears that cause afflictions, and that adds up over time. Your tests totally show the average abysian player's situation during his expansion, you fucking retard.

Woodsmen blowpipes shoot a paralyzing dart. If you don't have a full complement of abysians, and due to spacing they get off two volleys, they can gang-stab the remaining non-paralyzed limping abysians to death with their shitty daggers and move on to stab the paralyzed abysians to death as your warlord prophet flees. At that point you're mostly hoping the shortbows of their friends will kill them.

The fact is I see really tiny abysias in a lot of domg games like the one dead in Bob on turn 11 or w/e, and it's cause of armchair shitcrafters like yourself who expand in SP and then go 'lol so easy'.
>>
>>162571265
I am total shit at expansion as everyone but Abysia. Any multiplayer game I have ever played I expanded easily with hardly any setbacks beyond the odd province with 3 air mages in it. I generally get my shit wrecked then because I'm playing Abysia but saying they are bad at expansion is just stupid.
>>
>>162571265
That's the starting army. It takes attrition. Abysia builds more units to continue expansion. Depending on their build, they might make blessed burning ones. They might continue using non-sacred heavy infantry.

Abysia is a weak nation. Expansion is not one of its weaknesses.

Abysia arguably the best starting army in the game but I'm inclined to go with this one. Their expansion by large is average-ish or worse, or for the very least extremely reliant on getting high production provinces adjacent to your capital for it to be above-average. It's simple to use and nothing much can go horribly wrong but I tend to find myself expanding faster with more than half of the nations, and since Abysia can't deploy new expansion parties to the front lines quickly or reroute the older ones once they encounter opposition, they're very unlikely to get exceptional expansion that more mobile nations may enjoy.

I don't know about the best because the near-crippling weaknesses are still there (Summod+ME might be better) but Abysia is far stronger than they are in the base game, with summonable big mages/SCs and troops, absurd F/E income from rituals (generation of +3F and +1FE sites in your dominion, making income from Eternal Pyre seem like chump change) and fire magic in general being stronger.

4x war game with mythological themes.
>>
>>162583741
How does it compare with Fallen Enchantress or Age of Wonders III?
>>
>>162583103
It's a bit more like grand strategy I suppose. It's like 4x in that your goal is to fuck over the other players but the basic setup (provinces, very little infrastructure management) is more like grand strategy. The battles are far more complex and deeper, the only thing that I can think of that comes closest is total war and total war does not come close. It's also different since the battles are turn-based, heavily influenced by spells (after the early game) and you have to plan our your tactics ahead of time.

The game is most notable for being the deepest competitive strategy game that exists, in terms of gameplay. Note the line in the OP:
>over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items.
Every game as balance concerns, but most of these have a situation where you would want to use them. And this is a game with several dozen nations, each with a different unit roster, different access to magic, and different strategies.
>>
>>162584082
Totally different. The only research is magic. Magic varies from buff spells to skeleton summoning to literally snuffing out the sun. Turns are resolved simultaneously, as in Diplomacy, with battles being planned out in advance. Troops and mages follow preset scripts.

The game is very complicated, and a lot of its complication is fractally weird, if that makes sense, with little details popping up as you explore the mechanics of the game.
>>
>>162583103
It's a turn based strategy about gods wanting to murder each other to become head god

Can you play solo or will I have to shill my friend to buy this game to play with me?
It's currently on sale on steam so depending on your answer I may buy it now or later.
>>
>>162585029
You can play it solo but it's not that much better than a normal strategy game that way, because the AI doesn't really make you think. Still worth the price on sale.

You don't need a friend to play it online, we have games regularly. There's usually several going on at once, since they take around three months to resolve usually.
>>
>>162585029
You can dick around in single player but the AI isn't too much of a challenge once you get a hang of it. There's an enormous amount of content though so you can scratch it for a few months before you even hit multiplayer.
Even then, nothing beats the weird emergent stories that happen in multiplayer
>>
>>162583103
It's definitely niche, but the people who like it commonly exceed 1500 hours.
>>
>>162585119
>the AI doesn't really make you think
The AI's strategies don't, but there's still a lot of thinking that does into playing the game anyway, especially when you're new to it.
>>
>>162585119
>>162585168
Thanks for the answer. Will get

>since they take around three months to resolve usually
That's really fucking long.
>>
>>162585680
That's because the games usually play out at about 1 turn a day, faster in the beginning, slower in the end. If you want to play faster, direct-connection blitzes are frequently hosted in the steam group.
>>
>>162585680
That's at one turn per day. It's also possible to do a blitz, where you spend maybe fifteen minutes per turn, but that will eat up your whole weekend, and they usually end because people don't have time to continue rather than because someone wins. Occasionally the stars will align and you'll get a normal (play by email) game where there's regularly two or more turns per day, but don't count on it.

Let me tell you a story anon.

I started out as a tiny nation of Men, Knights, and Witches sandwiched between monkeys and their sacred divine-dancers and the fuckin' Frost Giants, a mountain range, and the ocean. I built my tiny empire, and there was peace. then the frost giants invaded, their flaming pigs (the Glosos) leading the way, a strange use for their death gems but who am I to argue. I was initially pushed back, my longbowmen having little effect on the giants and tough-hided fire-pigs, but I rallied when I hit Alteration 4, and every Crone left the tower to spam the mightiest of spells - Swarm. Each nature gem became 20 tiny biting bugs, and the Jotun hordes were devoured. I swept across them like a tide (of bugs) but Jotuns got behind my lines, and too few mages were left in the homeland to withstand them - the Capital was threatened, and I was forced to withdraw. And then fight my across him once again at a ruinous cost in gems (and bugs).

I unlocked a mightier bug summoning spell.

This is when the fine nation of Marignon, with their Much Better Knights and Fire Magic decided to invade me, the player for some reason having ignored the Fire magic (and his crossbowmen, and his angels) and decided to concentrate solely on making as many knights as humanly possible and giving them a blessing from his god. There was.. a lot of knights.

Luckily, Enough Bugs > Knights, so again many mages many gems many bugs, knights being eaten by bugs, mages making the knight's armour rusty so they could be eaten by bugs, and some minor archery, and slowly, oh so slowly, I pushed out over marignon.

In the north, the nation of Ermor, where undead rise from the ground itself to answer the call of war, had slowly fallen to the cunning ploys of C'tis (death magic using egyptian lizards) and Abysia (lava men with a persian theme who use blood magic alongside their native fire) in a horrifying reversal.

>4X or a grand strategy
Grand strategical component isn't present as a gameplay mechanic (although diplomacy is a crucial component in multiplayer) and it's 4X only through a huge stretch. Dominions would be best described as strategic-tactical fantasy wargame because that is where its style and mechanics can be traced back to. Turns are simultaneous (there's also no direct control over battles but you can deploy your forces and give them scripted orders, with replay being available the next turn), which contributes to its excellent suitability for MP, particularly in PBEM format.

As for why you should care, the most obvious feature is extraordinary amount of content (almost a hundred factions, a thousand spells, 3k units etc) and options. One can argue about whether or not Dominions is deep or just vast, but you can pull off insane stuff like effectively wishing for more wishes (there's a global enchantment called Arcane Nexus that converts all used gems to astral pearls that can be used to cast Wish, allowing you to wish for gems and get enough astral pearls to wish for more gems), summoning an infinity of skeletons or blessing your sacred warriors and buffing them with spells so as to make them near unstoppable, only to have an undead titan broken free from Tartarus dropped on top of them, equipped with magical artifacts countering your one-dimensional army.

Worldbuilding is another. It's one thing to have epic clashes between Spanish Inquisition, undead Romans, Zoroastrian birdmen, the Aztecs and R'lyeh, but it's not just a mindless battle royal between tropes but the game actually features very well thought out and consistent world (despite gods literally walking amongst men) with deep mythological references and mechanics closely tied to the lore (an example I like to use is Heart Companions, inspired by Sacred Band of Thebes, literally being gay in terms of gameplay mechanics).

These two nations, fearing my now-vast size, quickly invaded me through chokepoints denuded of living population (and therefore, life-giving supply) by the Ashen Empire of Ermor (before it had been defeated by the two of them), their starving armies meeting my God, every mage I could scrape up, and hundreds of independent icthytids, fish-mans somewhat like beefy kuo-toa, who I had been recruiting from the indie populations locally.

Throwing back the initial Abysian foray, a much larger force of their powerful summons and crossbred units formed up outside the 'dead zone', a picket line of Elemental Kings of Earth and Balrogs forming a line of death my armies could not cross (my mages having no answer to their horrifying toughness, and my troops skittering off them like water on a hot griddle).

Meanwhile, I invaded C'tis along another route, with the armies I had had in Marignon turning around and slow-marching their way north to try to turn the tide, as mages dropped like flies to Abysian demon attacks and C'tissian assassins, denuding the north of mages.

Luckily the armies from the south arrived just in time, reinforcing the 'front' as this grueling war of atttrition had now become, with C'tis feinting from the sea and Abysia playing footsie with my many traps I laid hoping he would walk his big ol' army into them (sadly he did not).

Tides of Men, Witches, Icthytids, Soulless (zombies), and the occasional Knight, just hurling themselves with varying tactics against C'tissian skeleton hordes and Abysian Elemental Kings, pouring against them like a wave.

That's where i'm at currently. Game is like a month and a half old, a turn a day initially, and now a turn every 2. The scripting is killing me. It actually hurts to open a new turn. But the pain is a good pain. The dominions is overtaking me.

Putting A5 on the boar? Yep. Intentionally so. He's died twice. Original job was to forge boosters for crones (because they only come in fucking a3 rarely and you need more than that), and also expand, because this is a 200% gold 100% res game, which shafts Man expansion even harder than normal.

And if you think the indies/soulless are a bad idea, try using Man national troops for literally fucking anything. The ringmail-wearing fuckers are awful. 7g zotz siege chaff, high-hp + net + spear icthytids, and carrion reanimated soulless, all seem great comparatively.

But that's absolutely normal situation with vampire lords.

You don't summon vampires directly, you snowball the vampire lords into 50+ vampires per turn deathball that's basically impossible to invade into and starts to flood outside sooner or later.

It's not even expensive either, considering summoning 2-3 vampire lords per turn is easy with a midgame blood economy for most blood nations, you have enough left for demon armies and B3D3 immortal flying stealthy casters have a value of their own and are very easy to mobilize.
10-15 turns is usually all it takes to get unlimited vampire corps, both mage and troop.

Other than that, it's natgen and a corner case of retarded game balance where all the mechanics break up. I'm summoning 150~ vampires per turn.

It'll all be better when the One True God ascends to his heavenly throne and rewrites the tablets of destiny. Surely he'll reward his chosen people and generals that served him. He'll certainly not sacrifice his people by the millions to seal his trapped enemies underground or banish his generals in the void just because they've outlived their usefulness.

Vampires are extremely good. Their attack is nontype magic armor penetrating. They rip a lot of things to pieces.

>>
>>162593129
>ever-shrinking
I found the flaw in your thinking. It;s a strategy that also requires you to have temples.

That said, if you can't see the utility in taking land and expanding while avoiding enemies, then having a ball of killy shit that doesn't die to deal with any attempts to make you pay for your behavior, you're a fool.
>>
>>162593129
Bloodnations often can dompush and immortal flying force securing borders allows you to dump the other troops towards enemy. Besides vampire lords are simply good by themselves.

>units that can't leave your ever-shrinking dominion
Given their invulnerability and resistances they can be easily used for raiding if you feel that way.

I've grinded a few games with vamps over the years and at this point consider them one of the more broken units in the game.
Situational though, in a game of 8 players or less i'd go for a more traditional demon spam and earlier victory.

Turn based strategy in it's most classic form. There are few if any 4x or grand strategy elements, and little to no diplomacy functionality. Vamps are legit because you can just hurl them at invading armies over and over again and kill everything via attrition. If you've never tried to attack into a vampire deathstar, you won't understand why that shit is the absolute worst.
>>
>>162595571
>raided by vampires
Presumably they're not the only units in your entire nation. Although vampires can go out of your dominion if they need to, and if a province isn't heavily defended there's not much cost to it.

>backline temples
You should probably be putting temples near your front lines as much as you can.

>having twice as many vampires as you initially claimed
Nobody has been talking in hard numbers from the get-go. But doing multiple things is pretty easy to vampires, since they're flying and immortal. It's not like every single thing needs to be done every single turn.

>people who have already won
There's no such thing as having already won until the game is over. Having vampires means you pretty much can't lose, and are very unlikely to see major losses. That's a strength regardless of where you are in any sort of rankings. But... You do know that there's a possibility in between "clearly and incontrovertibly losing" and "clearly and incontrovertibly winning", right? And in fact this is the state that most of the game plays out in?

Abysia is currently down to 6 provinces, 2 forts. One fort is under siege by a weak indie army, which should be easy to remove. He has good income for his size.

Scales look alright (full order/growth, 2 prod), only odd thing is he took drain 1.

He has a large number of troops, mainly indie crossbows, and a small force of mages. Research is a bit slow (likely due to drain plus small nation), but he's gone for smart research goals and has enough gems and research to deploy mage support immediately.

He's in a bad position, but I think a smart player could turn it around with good diplomacy and a bit of luck.
>>
>>162596123

>there's no such thing as having won

Tell that to the guy snowballing while you're off in your personal vampire fortress.

>every thing every turn

You kinda do, though, unless you can out-predict your opponent. At which point, it's not that vampires are good, it's that you are better at the game than them, and could be doing that with storm demons or whatever.

>frontline temples

The entire point of having vamps is if an enemy force breaks into your dominion your vamps can 'come back for nuvver go'. If you can reliably keep them out of your frontline and don't need several vamptraps to stop them, why are you vamping, again? Why not just use..non-immortal, cheaper, better stuff?

>>162596075

I've attacked into a lot of nations that hurled vamps at me each turn and it did very little. The only time vamps have actually stopped me, it was a desperation attack when I was being hit by every other neighbour and couldn't put much force behind it. For the slavecost in vampire lords they could have used any other type of demon that they had the paths for and kicked my shit in regardless.

Overall vamps strike me as one of those things that certain players have used to great effect when diplomacy/other factors caused them to need a specific kind of defensive advantage, and it stomps noobs, so people decided it was great. If your shit is properly mage supported, any reasonable slavecost in vamplords is not going to bother you much. If you vastly outcost your enemy in vampire lords and field more cost in vamplords than they have in their entire army, then that's not that 'vamplords are good', it's that you outcosted your enemy and therefore have a massive resource advantage.
>>
>>162597616

>>162598997

Again if you're referring to vampire-the-unit, it loses against anything that isn't a shitty spearman.

If you mean the vampire lord, it relies on the enemy not having a counter to rigor + skeletons, or it's support lfal/sblast caster in battles ONLY in your dominion, which isn't great for a big pile of slaves. I'd prefer to have 15 demon knights or whatever the equivalent is, or more slaves to feed to the sabbaths.

The big use of them, to me, is in endgame to provide very specific blood spells as a nation with no national blood. Rush of Strength, Rain of Blood, and Life For a Life are all worth expending the time and effort of getting vampire lords in order to cast them when you otherwise couldn't. And you don't give fucks about dominion you take those puppies right into enemy dominion so you can headshot their fat caster with LfaL or drop Rain to aid your morale strat or whatever

Icthytids take buffs better, especially army of lead/gold that i'm casting ubiquitously. They also don't burn themselves to death on fireshield which is on half of all units I fight, like foresters and to a lesser extent logrians. They have more HP so I can more safely RoS my own troops with just Fog Warriors up and no Army yet, aka first-turn RoS because I need an epower to get Army on (no blood stones).

They are excellent for drawing evo fire away from far more expensive knights, who I need because they hit harder than all other troops I have access to. Their nets tie down stupid shit with great defense that i'm fighting in the form of Children of the X and abysian special crossbreeding crap, also turbokills magmachildren. Their stone spears don't BREAK when I cast Ironbane, which I do, a lot. They aren't wearing armour which BREAKS when I cast ironbane.

They cost 2 res, and i'm producing at rescap, in all provinces, all the time. They go underwater.

Icthytids are competitive normally with crappy troops on nations, but in this scenario, they are entirely invaluable.

>length fucking zero attack
>it loses against anything that isn't a shitty spearman.
A unit with 25 invulnerability, regeneration, lifedrain and resistances loses to anything that isn't a shitty spearmen.
Unironically talking about length as their downside got me the most.
I feel like you've never seen them in action or even looked at their statline. Vampires rip things to shreds and are dangerous even to tarts in lategame.
Here's an example from current turn. Seraph has base 26 protection. It was lucky to get away with 5 hp after a single turn. 0 cost invested in defense.
They don't give a shit about protection, they don't give a shit about blindness unlike other demons.
Nontype, armorpiercing, magic. They very often hit harder than demons which cant ignore armor with the same efficiency.
The exception being lifeless troops.

And i'm talking about both vampire lords and vampires when I talk value. Vampire lord is a soul contract on legs.
The choice isn't 1 vampire lord or 15 demons, it's 1 vampire lord +10-20-30 vampires vs 15 demons. Multiply it by however many times you get to reuse vampires.
The longer game goes the more value it provides and like with soul contracts it snowballs extremely hard with numbers and time but in general it starts to pay off pretty fast.

>The big use of them, to me, is in endgame to provide very specific blood spells as a nation with no national blood.
Those are natural uses, but you are simply underusing vampire lords if you aren't producing vampires with them.

Either way, Natgen has long outlived demons as a useable troop type outside of underwater but vampires are still useful. Not that it's anything but a complete meme game at this point, but that's enough to validate their value to me.

>Icthytids take buffs better, especially army of lead/gold that i'm casting ubiquitously.
Ichtyids end up with lower protection under ironskin - 20 protection vs 24 for foresters and 26 for logrians. Foresters also get much better benefit from offensive buffs like strength and quickness.

>They also don't burn themselves to death on fireshield which is on half of all units I fight, like foresters and to a lesser extent logrians.
Fire shield should be irrelevant with army of gold regardless of weapon length. It's 3 AP damage, minus weapon length, against 20+ protection. The chance of it damaging your troops is below 5%

>They are excellent for drawing evo fire away from far more expensive knights, who I need because they hit harder than all other troops I have access to.
Evo bait is a decent use for them. That said, if you can put strength buffs up foresters should hit harder than knights, at a cheaper price per square.

>Their nets tie down stupid shit with great defense that i'm fighting
I don't know what Children of the X is, but all the other stuff you listed has terrible defense (mostly below 10).

>Their stone spears don't BREAK when I cast Ironbane, which I do, a lot.
Instead they start out as bad as broken weapons. It's very hard to test, but broken weapons seem to lose about a single point of damage. Stone spears start off with 1 damage less than normal spears.

>They aren't wearing armour which BREAKS when I cast ironbane.
Broken armor is better than no armor.

>They cost 2 res, and i'm producing at rescap.
Fair enough. More troops is often better than quality.

>Icthytids are competitive normally with crappy troops on nations
I have yet to find a nation whose troops cannot beat Ichtyids in a fight. They might be useful in your situation, but they're generally awful troops.

Oh yes, a 0 mage support fight. That happens . . . actually nvm, this is domg, that likely happens a lot.

Ichythids for MA Atlantis serve as better blockers than anything they own for the price, which is relevant because MA Atlantis troops weren't killing actually good units anyhow. Giving mages a few added turns is far more valuable in many cases than flailing slightly less hard against actual elite units.

As for Man though, why anyone would choose non-dual wielders over dual wielders, as anything beyond dealing with arrows early, is beyond me.

Having glamour, elves (ie. Tuatha DĂ© Danann/Vanir: Vanheim/Helheim/MidgĂ¥rd/Eriu/TĂr na nĂ“g) can sneak through your territory undetected by your forces and then issue an attack command (or Cloud Trapeze in thugs) simultaneously, the kind of first strike that's difficult to recover from.
>>
>>162615817
Elf first strike still requires more effort and planning to pull off than bird or bat first strike.

Flying units+commanders is horseshit.

Caelum's starting army loses to everything 100% of the time
Having a woke pretender feels mandatory as them
>>
>>162617029
Caelum has one of the best expansion out there without an awake pretender. Alpha Strike from Spire Horn Warriors clears almost all indie types effortlessly (high defence ones like amazons and cavalry tend to be a problem, but they are somewhat of an issue for everyone and Caelum can just dodge them and come back later) while having very low resource cost and unparalleled mobility (every new expansion party gets into the action instantly).

They're not quite as good as Xibalba with foreign recruitment and even more spammable lancers and perhaps a bit behind the likes of Pangaea/Vanheim, but Caelum expansion is top tier.
>>
>>162617329
Also, mammoths are wonderful elite elephants.

I wouldn't really mention them in the same breath as Xibalba though - the gulf between expansion of Caelum and Xibalba is far larger than the gulf between Caelum and the worst expanding nation in the game (EA Bats ofc).

But that's mostly because EA Xibalba is absolutely insane as a nation, losing out only to the most busted of mod nation crap (and even then they still can't be ignored due to the best early raiding of any nation, and top notch blood).

I meant to specify that this only really applies to EA Xibalba.

LA Xibalba has to contend with LA Indies, which can cause . . . problems. They still expand well, just not at a nutso rate.

MA Xibalba lacks the bat production. EA Xibalba is also much weaker early if they cannot access nearby forests to serve as added production centers.

>>
>>162623767
Is this EA Vanheim or MA Vanheim?
>>
>>162623767
>how do I design a good pretender
Varies very heavily by nation, by age, by map and settings (to a degree), by opposition, etc. We can try to give you pointers but generally need a lot of detail because each nation is very, very different.
>>
>>162623767
Vanheim has arguably the strongest sacreds in the game (if it's EA), or just really strong mounted sacreds (if it's MA) so you need at least a single major (9) bless. W9/N9 are good choices, though you can make almost anything work with them. You also have great vanjarl thugs that can solo small armies or raid province defence (with appropriate items), and the bless applies to them as well.

Your national mages already have A4-5 (vanadrotts) and E3 or so (dorfs), along with small quantities of D1/F1. With W9N9 bless you can both gain access to those paths and get a strong bless for your sacreds, With something like E4S4N9 you can get into astral end-game/golems (work well with N9), and still get a nice bless. With something like D6N9 you can get into death end-game (liches, tarts, gift of health).

If it's EA you can dump sloth all the way to 2 because your cap-only sacreds will carry you. If it's MA, you need einheres, and sloth 1 is manageable. Also, money scales are a must. Something like Order 3, Sloth 1-2, Cold 3, Growth 3, and varying levels of Luck/Misfortune, Magic/Drain will be nice.

If you're really, really shit at expanding, take this snek or this doggo. They provide both a nice thug/mage/troop bless, good scales, and an awake expander functionality. You can play with magic/luck scales a bit. Some players prefer to NOT deal with misfortune 2, for example, while I never got a problem with it as long as you have order 3.

You can do either of those or both.

>both seems prohibitively costly
That's the idea of big blesses, you're always sacrificing something. On your particular pretender you can take a point of drain (that won't hurt much because all your research mages are vanjarls with a lot of RP) to get dominion 6 and make one expansion party per turn (1 vanjarl and 5 sacreds).

How do you counter seeking arrow spam in your army? He killed all of my commanders and cant move my army anymore.

>>
>>162577506

Engineering. Hard-sciences, STEM, or even basic informatics and tech support. One of my friends managed to require 9 years to get through high school (Technical Institute) and he's now making like 2500 bucks par month with a cozy and easy job. Considering what I get after a top-tier education in non-STEM subjects, choose tech.

Always. Hey, at least I get 75% of the references in Dominions!
>>
>>162630351

>>162631271
Seeking Arrow is armor-negating but isn't actually piercing damage. It does quite low damage at only 8 though so tough units can survive a few. Recruit some indie commanders and scouts and have them travel with your army as ablative bodyguards.
>>
>>162631271
Hmmm... Does air shield work out of battle? That could be a good idea if it works.
>>
>>162631271
He is broken by now, spaming this spell is very pricey.
But to counter it just use some items which grants Luck or Twist Fate.

He is just wasting his gems on you, bear with it until he has no air gems anymore and thank him that he is using them in such inefficient way. I remember once some idiot trying to spam them on me, it was kinda unpleasant, but a lot more funny, because when you need 4 Seeking Arrows to kill 1 Soulless Commander it's really humorous.
>>
>>162631271

That's a good one. Easiest is ablative commanders. Tons of scouts, cheap summons and indies. Luck works, regen does not. Get some cheap items with Luck , give him too many targets, or merely set-up a Dome trap (suboptimal, though) to fry his mages. To kill a beefy Thug leading troops he'll require 5-6 consecutive hits, and if he's not throwing like 40 par turn you'll endure.

If he's throwing 40-50 par turn without slowing, you put yourself into a shit-tier strategical situation.
>>
>>162631271
By far the easiest and cheapest counter is to have redundant commanders in your army. A cheap research mage or nonmagical commander isn't worth the number of gems it costs to kill them with seeking arrows.

I remember hearing that air shield works against it, I'd test that before you use it.

Is the only thing you're supposed to do vs AI is be aggressive as fuck early on and take all their provinces asap? Cause if I take my time like I usually do, no matter who I am against the AI will drown me in garbage units and though 40 of my men are worth 100 of the enemy, in the end they are too many. It's like by the start of year 2 I have maybe 150 men depending on the nation, and the AI always has more than double.
And so far I'm only playing vs Difficult AI, I can't even fucking imagine Impossible AI
>>
>>162638768

>>
>>162638768
Impossible AI can be annoying to fight as certain nations, since the AIs will see your supposed military strength as lower, and all decide to attack you.

Some nations (like Niefelheim, most elves, domkill, etc) just laugh at this. Other nations really sort of need to hit critical research goals before the AI becomes irrelevant, and even then shoving 5-6 impossible AIs out of your crap is super obnoxious.

It's good for practicing against diplomonsters who entice all the scrub lords to attack you.

You build on or two unbeatable stacks and/or several SCs to clear out the AI's trash horde, and you use massive PD to contain it/defend until you have your shit online. This is why people say "play MP" because doing this against players is a really poor idea.

There's typically two types of stacks: elite warriors buffed with fog warrior/army of lead/mass regen and a summoning stack of 10-20 mages casting Horde of Skeletons or the Conj5 Elementals with some guards. Using lesser buffs can work, but you can't really do a summoning startegy without Horde of Skeleton or full elementals.

>>
>>162654630
Max discount is 80% I think. Developers are happy to just let Steam do its thing, they're not really in it for the money anyway. But one of the problems they had with the previous publisher was the continuously high price, which stayed at $60 indefinitely, even years after release. That and the fact that in efforts to fight piracy, they ended up breaking the CD keys of legitimate users. And that they were required to use the publisher's forums but had no control over moderation, which I think is the one that the devs were most mad about personally.

I had nowhere else to expand because I got confined by other people's borders, so I just sent them towards thrones. I just had the initiative to take them, so I ended up with them.

Win or gain a decisive advantage (such that you don't need to play full autism mode to push the game to the end) before endgame. In other words, don't play games with more than 8 players or so. They too can go late of course, but not as often. Many nations also have much lower micro than others.
>>
>>162689158
14 player AI was a mistake
>>
>>162688870
A good planning beforehand and tried out efficient processes that you apply in every situation appliciable take off most of the micromanagement burden. It severely handicaps your true maximum potential but after a certain point spending just 30 minutes for a turn instead of two hours pays itself back.

Making full use of the various shortcuts like selecting all the mages with certain paths, going to the army screen and then just copypasting a script on all the highlighted guys helps with scripting.

Try assigning all kind of similar troops to certain roles and then using them in formations fitting for their role without much afterthought.

All this makes you more vulnerable if someone looks deeply into your tactics, but helps a lot when you are dealing with 100+ provinces.
>>
>>162688870
Don't play any nation with freespawn or insanity mechanics. Consolidate your forces into control groups so that spamming rituals, moving armies, etc is as few clicks as possible. Copy and paste all of your scripts. Don't give two fucks about efficiency.

Abysia. Slow moving armies, not a lot of choices to make regarding mages. Of course, you'll need blood.
>>
>>162691163
Slow moving armies require more micro, since you need to have multiple forces constantly moving in order to not be outmaneuvered and raided to death.

If you want to use slow moving armies for whatever masochistic reason, use MA Agartha because theirs are at least good.

You have to micro a tightly focused and controlled blood economy, counter-raid and retake from far more mobile enemies re-assign mages constantly, hand out gems to the mages you are using on the battlefield, micro blood slaves around because you don't have the gold for hunting labs, it's a micro nightmare.

Unless you mean 'an abysia with one big stack of troops and no mage support that loses in year 2' is low-micro? It's also an awful idea.

Sort of? Airshield does still appear on a commander outside of battle, whether from an A9 prophet or the arrowfend amulet.

Early testing implies that the arrow does do less damage to commanders with air shield, but that could be just damage rolls being fucky. You still get the same message regardless.

All that being said, it's up to you if its cheaper to craft arrowfend amulets for your important commanders, or just a shitton of indy mooks.

Chance of rusted armor breaking is 50% per melee hit, so it should occur fairly quickly.

However, damaged armor is not useless anymore - it's just a penalty to protection.

Destruction will be far more effective as it completely removes their armor.
>>
>>162702859

Actually first it gets damaged, then it gets destroyed.

Weapons only get 'damaged', never 'destroyed', 'destroyed weapons' are just a minor penalty to them.

>Slow moving armies require more micro, since you need to have multiple forces constantly moving in order to not be outmaneuvered and raided to death.
High resource units increase micro too, forcing you have to ferry troops from across the map.

Which naturally means that nations with mobile armies recruitable on the spot have less micro. Good examples are EA/MA Pangaea and Caelum who also have straightforward and homogeneous mages. Caelum for the most part uses two scripts on their primary mages (storm power->air elemental, storm power->thunder strike, although there of course are situations where you want to cast other stuff like Frozen Heart or False Horror or whatever) in addition to a relatively small number of really big mages. Similarly, EA/MA Pan might even largely ignore smaller mages in pitched battles and instead rely on Panii (who do need a variety of scripts but you won't ever have too many of them). I think Pangaea has good endgame if they actually get to Alteration-9 and such like after a speed bump that follows reaching their earlier research targets but Caelum is also pressed to close the games out pretty quickly and they have the tools to do so.

What sort of pretender should I use for EA Abysia with Summod and Magic Enhanced? Still erf snake? Or do the mods change Abysia enough that using something else would be a better choice?
>>
>>162743916
If you're not up against flyers, you don't need to do an individual bodyguard squad, but you do need your defensive line to cover at least as far as your mages go.

Having a flanking box is useful even if it's just regular infantry, since if the enemy is using a similar formation of just a line and it's shorter, then YOU now have the flank-advantage where either you'll have more people hitting them than they have hitting you or your guys can get in and muck up their archers or even mages.
>>
>>162744178
EA Abysia likes a heavy bless since burning ones are badass dual wielding murder machines. Magic Enhanced gets extra burning ones fo free if you can get their globals going.

Wadjet's good for W9N9. W4 does very little for burning ones, unfortunately, since they have no defense.

What.

Tell us more
>>
>>162750440
What would you take instead?
>>
>>162750862
it is a mod wot i made
of la machaka
basically i averaged ea and ma machaka and made a nation that isn't too horrible I think??
they have to rely on their foreign recruit mages (inept researchers, N2D1 with 100?FAWE 50?FAWE and 10?ND) for sitesearching and battle magic, as their fort mages are adept researchers but only N1 50?FAWE 10?ND. they have a cap only STR mage that is S1D1M2 with 200?FAWE, 75?FAWE and 50?ND.

where i think the nation is really unique is that it's got 4 kinds of recruitable berserking sacreds, lion, rhino, leopard and water buffalo
lion, leopard and rhino use heavy armour, rhino is heavier
leopards are stealthy and forest/mountain recruit
lions are cap only and are probably the weakest, i tried to make them slightly better heart companions so that they're actually usable but not so that it's a waste to take a big bless
rhinos are fuckheavy infantry and foreign recruit meaning that they're difficult to get outside of high resource provinces so you aren't gonna have a lot
buffalos are size 3, 3 attack berserk 5s, but have furs as armor and can only be recruited in swamps. may nerf the shit out of these guys tho, they're beast. may drop the general berserk bonus of the sacreds a ton anyway

sangomas (the foreign recruit mages) domsummon beasts. struggling to find a value that actually works (as in, actually summons animals rather than spamming them or not summoning them at all) but the concept is there
>>
>>162751887
as for balancing, i played a few 50 turn games as N9E9 la agartha and W9N9 la machaka, to see how they fared. seemed pretty equal. machaka tended to run out of gold really quickly because it had to recruit so many mages to get decent research, but as a counter to this their expansion is pretty good. where they struggle is that their national mages are hella random, so it's difficult to amass enough mages that can actually buff shit, but because literally every province with a temple and a lab can recruit these mages you have a good chance of getting something useful every turn. and even if they're shit as mages, they domsummon sacred, berserking animals and have beastmaster 3

in short, i went for gimmicky as hell flavour that might be severely op in places and severely up in others, so at least it's better than 90% of modnations
>>
>>162750969
Contract maker in pretty much every case for EA Aby. They need diversity desperately.

Same for MA Aby - diversity is needed too badly. LA Aby doesn't need diversity nearly as badly, but their sacreds aren't exactly worthy of a bless, so I suppose I could see a snek on them.

This ofc changes on a 5-6 player, or smaller, game. Then running over 1 person usually puts you in a game winning position. My only issue with duo bless EA Abysia is that it's strictly inferior in all ways to duo bless EA Vanheim.
>>
>>162752503
>this bless strategy is worst than the best bless nation in the game, so therefore it's awful
Ok.
>>
>>162752632
I didn't say its bad, hell, N9W9 (or N9E9) Burning Ones are fucking fantastic on smaller maps.

But I have to always ask myself, why aren't I playing Vanheim if I wanted to do this?
>>
>>162752760
I wanted to try out Abysia because of the fire support Summod and Magic Enhanced gives them. Vanheim wasn't picked, in any case, and it's an eight player game.

Depends on expansion and other factors. 12 months in vanilla, up to 24 in summod. The gold you get in the first 12 turns, though, often influences your expansion and first war, making it far more important than the pure income math would indicate.

It is possible to get all globals sans Second Sun with Annointed of Rhuax with the right randoms and boosters, but at that point you're relying on getting your F2D2 hero for the very least so in my opinion it might be a good idea to make your pretender an Eternal Pyre/Rivers of Lava/Stroke the Smouldercone/Second Sun caster. Since blood has all kinds of new tricks up its sleeve you could spend slaves instead and you have alternative forms of endgame now, contracts don't seem so appealing.

Without ME, contracts are one of the less bad strategies Abysia has. Summod adds Abysian crossbreeding though so perhaps that might be a better use for your slaves, but I haven't tried it.

The difference is very minor during those first 12 turns, and most nations are resource capped for expansion rather than gold capped.

20 gold per turn will not make a big difference to your earlygame, but not taking growth puts your income far behind for midgame and beyond.

Resource capped = build forts with excess gold. It's not even that common a thing, if you're resource capped hard enough that gold is irrelevant to you in earlygame, mercs, or you fucked up in nation design.

Still not sufficient to hit gold cap on most nations.

>take an awake
Taking extra provinces gives you gold at the same time as increasing resources. It will improve your expansion, but it won't leave you capped on gold.

>take a serious bless so each of your sacreds do the walking of 3 sacreds instead of 1 sacreds
More bless usually leaves you with more gold during expansion, since you can send out smaller expansion parties.
>>
The answer to being gold capped is more castles.

Anyone interested in subbing in for LA Caelum?

He's got a decent amount of land and forces. Dunno if he's involved in any ongoing wars.

Current state of the game's something like this >>162760170
>>
>>162760170
Hey I'm not as small as I thought.
>>
>>162807389
I'm interested in you forcehosting so I can get my turn asap, desu.

Also I'm getting 11W every turn and have hundreds of them, any advice on what should I do with it? It's turn 24, for those who don't know it. I can't think of anything other than conjuration for winter wolves or construction 6 for bottles of living water.

>>162808470
I don't get why don't you eat AI Atlantis, if you ask me. That's a lot of extra land for free plus some uw forts in that small lake to the south.
>>
>>162806510
It would be great if you could make it B3 to get bloodstones. anywhere you can get those points from?
>>
>>162808770
Atlantis went AI!? Why do I never check for that?
>>
>>162808868
Like 10 turns ago, heh. Also midgard if you didn't know it And C'tis soon if he doesn't want to deal with 30 heavy armored greek elephants that I can see trampling through his lands
>>
>>162809010
Well shit, and here i was getting spooked about potentially getting attacked by fish.
>>
>>162808825
E warlocks with boots can make bloodstones. The god's only real crafting durt is getting those boots
>>
>>162809241
Ah, right. Sorry then.
>>
>>162769286
What the fuck, have you no honor? Fight you coward. If we unite we can slaughter the bats as they deserve. Let them live and you will turn them in what you fear
Is there ANYONE attacking Xib right now or are you all fucking babies?
>>
So do enlarge effects increase health too or just size?
>>
>>162809661
yeah heajtj
>>
>>162809056

It's Summod. There are underwater indie scouts.
>>
>>162808770

If noone's volunteered by the time I get home (in six/seven hours) I'll get him set AI, but I'd prefer a sub, especially given he's in a pretty strong position from what I can tell. Big AIs suck.
>>
>>162809661
Health, size and strength
>>
coe is on sale should I get it?
>>
>>162809661
Technically it increases dick size too, but doesn't make it erect.
>>
>>162810064
No, play it 5 times for free and then forget it forever until the next one comes out.

that's what I did with the current one and the previous one, and it's never good enough

Well, I actually bought the previous one, but didn't buy this one because I knew them
>>
>>162810151
Where does one get it for free.
>>
>>162805235

>awake

You use it for the cap ring. This vastly increases speed of getting expansion parties out for res-heavy nations.

>bless

when you're making sacreds with early gold, getting more bang for your buck is good to justify taking order over growth

>prod3

So? There's some nations that can just shit out good low-res troops like revelers and prod means you can do that earlygame and overrun someone with them (often in addition to a monobless). It's one of the few types of rush that seem to actually work.

Can I send more than one unit to the arena deathmatch when it starts?
And can I send a huge amount of junk commanders in to feed xp to my champion?

I assume he's talking about the Steam Returns thing.

Basically if you've bought it in the past two weeks, and have played less than two hours, you can get your money back.
>>
>>162814064
There was a link to pirate version in the first point at one point.
>>
>>162814064
Also the sale is on gamersgate, and you can't refund activated keys.

It's only $7, I'm probably gonna get it anyway. I suck at dom4 and coe is supposed to be more casul.

I mean I have the troops to take this last throne (I have 24 Panii (with 4 more every other turn!) producing like... 8 maenads a turn each; I have at least 1500 maenads total)
but he's not producing his units for free

So you are really going to send thousands of dick-loving maidens known for their revelry and lewdness to do battle with thousands of naked primitive beastlike protomen. Really?

Was there really not a single point where you sat down, looked at what you are doing and thought to yourself that maybe this is not the best idea?

Please post the battle results.

What is a good pretender for early age tien chi and what strategies should I use? Much noob here

Too busy buying more starspawn/forts/commanders to ferry around the endless hordes of crazy people.
>>
>>162815551
Your sacreds will shred face with a good bless but they have shitty protection so arrows will mess them up. W9 is probably good.
>>
>>162815112
I accidentally Mictlan with blessings so it'll only take half an hour to get there now!
>>
>>162810994
It feels like we're arguing about different points, so let's try something different.

Can you name a single nation which expands better with order 3 than with growth 3?

I can name plenty which have no difference.

I'm surprised nobody told me to fuck off yet

What next are we going to bend for Xib and ask him to kiss us on the neck while he penetrates with his bat dick?
Also Mictlan explain what the hell you are trying to say because you sent me two messages in broken english, 2 or 3 turns apart from each other, and we didn't even met yet.
Are you trying to say you're allied with Xibalba?
>>

That is the standard operating procedure for dealing with EA Xibalia.

Shite. Go with B7E2 and dormant for contracts, empower him to F1 with all the fire gems you won't be using in the first year. Use the E2 to make earth boots for your warlocks so you can forge blood stones and summon demon knights.

>>162820267
