Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Gear only gets lost if they have to go through a form that lacks those gear slots. Note: They'll attempt to return to the form they started the battle in, once it's over, so Skratti, for example, need to go through wolf form, which has misc slots only, if they start human and then go to werewolf over the course of the battle.

Not an issue for Chayots, I don't think, but that's how it works.

I wanted to do an onmyo-ji focused strategy when I first played jomon, but I found out quickly it doesn't work out well.

StR really hurts, it means you need 2x the amount of infrastructure (at 1500 gold each province and taking 6 turns). If you end up building that many forts you'll be heavily behind on research, which is a death sentence for a nation without good sacreds/troops to help them through earlygame.

I did switch to onmyo-ji later in the game, and I found that worked quite well. However, at that point you likely have enough research to use all the random paths on Master Shugenja, so there's not a big difference in effectiveness between the two.

In general, I wouldn't bother with a titan-style pretender on Hinnom, though, just on account of the fact that you can recruit Melqarts that do that for your.

The cookie-cutter Hinnom build is an imprisoned N9E4 bull with strong income scales. The reason that you use this is so that your giant mage-priests can bless themselves and get regeneration and reinvigoration for free that otherwise requires items (costly in gems and equipment slots). For single player, making giant 'thugs' with this bless will be very strong, because the AI will have issues killing them since it doesn't really use mages very well, and with armor, a vine shield, and this bless, they will be able to withstand nigh-infinite numbers of weak enemy units.

Yeah, but once you get buffs they'll be murder machines which ignore ranged attacks. It wouldn't help their earlygame xbow vulnerability much, but it gives them a strong midgame and decent lategame that they currently lack.

2 attack katana might even be good enough to let you just rush enchantment for arrow fend, at which point crossbows cease to be a concern.

Now pyre takes away less than 50fat, so the tart needs to die 3 plus 1 time to be killed completely.
Now assuming that all your virgins dont die on turn1 from acid storm, you will need to either cast a B3 spell 16 times or a B3+ spell 12 times in a single turn.
At this point I must ask where you're getting all these amazing blood mages.
Of course AI can be stupid and accidentally target the acid storm tart.

The main weakness is that you can send it back simply by doing a single point of damage to it. If you can do that cheaply, it will fail to do anyway against your armies. At most it'll be a minor nuisance raiding provinces.

a horror harmonica build honestly should swap out the fire brand and vine shield too. Vine shield kicks in after the first attack anyways, and while it's AMAZING at preventing a unit from being swamped, preventing damage after the first swing isn't that big of a deal for this guy. The onyx oracle doesn't like summoning more horrors, so it only ended up making a grand total of 3. The monolith killed them, then never killed anything else. It's surely possible to do this using something else, but yeah. Mindless!

Actually, if you ever used horror harmonica golem you'd know it gets tapped out by his own horrors most of the time. Often 2-3 turns into a fight before producing a significant amount of them.

When I used it, the horrors seemed to prefer the stuff it was fighting for whatever reason. Maybe the fact that the golem's mindless? Whatever the reason, the horrors have almost never attacked my golem unless they've already gotten rid of the other stuff in the province. That said, the golem doesn't summon horrors after his script is over anyways, so he only ever makes 5.

Not quite. Horrors tend to avoid attacking Golems unless there are not mindless troops on the battlefield. But if the Horror is the non-teleporting type and the Golem standing beteen him and major part of the battlefield it attacks. Also it may attack if there are very few troops of enemy presents (for example 2-3 PD and 1 thug, he can attack the Harmonica owner instead). But if for counterexample you are sending your Golem with the ghouls from Arouse Hunger ritual then Horrors will target ghouls and not the Golem.

So basically Golem MAY GET HIT, so it's random yeah, but it's quite unlikely.

Xibalba has 130 bats sieging Agartha's cap right now. They've been able get there pretty damn fast due to how the caves have been connected together by the admin: Xibalba started near a cave that was connected right to their capital, with no agarthan provinces in between to resist them.

So far he took a few provinces for me that had 40 men or so in them, and it was pretty damn satisfying. I like this more than leading big armies.

Bane Lords are the standard ones, Wraith Lords if you feel like dipping into heavy thug/light SC territory and Tartarians are standard end game SCs. Nieflheim needs indies for them, but Golems are incredible chassis. Elemental royalty are more Super Casters than Super Combatants, but with the right gear they wreck face.

Niefel Jarls need one item to thug - a vine shield. They have good base protection (unless you shove them into heavy heat scales), and casting Soul Vortex takes care of fatigue/regen/damage.

I think you're underestimating a Jarl with soul vortex. Unless you throw mage support at it (which none of his gear will help with) it's not going to die.

Soul Vortex is fucking fantastic, but it won't always help. You say none of the gear will help against mage support, but there are DEGREES of mage support.

A couple of Skelespammers aren't the same thing as a full communion battle mage setup. Will it die against the latter? Absolutely. You need to get into multiple jarls, and more specific gearing to deal with that. But a touch more reinvig means it'll survive against the former when it'd die without.

For the cost of three Nature or Earth gems I'll take that.

Even with good gearing, 2-3 of them can basically stalemate your jarl until rout.

The cold-based protection on Jarls is really nice, but if you're only using Jarl thugs in your own dominion, then you're never gonna win anything, and Wolven Winter spam will only get you so far against Abysia or Mictlan or any of the other Heat nations. As well improving the armour.

He's said he has an N9E4 bless, so two reinvig from that. A Girdle or messenger boots would put that to fatigue neutral with his gearing there, or at +1 with the Armor of Knights instead.

So does soul vortex. Most things soul vortex doesn't work on are cold resistant, so brand doesn't even cover its weak points.

Soul Vortex plus Frost Brand would be faster than either alone, but you don't need that much killing speed unless you're fighting a really large force. If you are fighting a really large force, you're making a SC now.

Not everyone runs heat 3 (cold 3 seems a lot more popular), and I did mention armor being needed for that case. It just shouldn't go into your standard thug build when it's quite likely he's using it in cold or neutral scales.

A Thug is a commander who, with minimal cost, can take out at least 10 PD. The virtue here is cheapness, since you're going to want a bunch of them to harass your enemy and take unguarded provinces from him.

An SC is a commander who can destroy an army. The efficiency here is less of a concern compared to making sure they're as difficult to kill as possible.

Light of the North Start plus Stellar Cascades (with B9 boars as blockers) worked really well last time I used them. Communions are fine for little things, and earthquake would be worthwhile if against nations spamming troops, but Stellar Cascades fucking annihilates anything like giants, since with 45g mages you're gonna have a fucking ton of it. And once you get enough boars of the carnutes up, you don't really need to use mages for risky situations since you can just throw a huge horde of boars at the situation, see what happens, and then do it again next month.

There isn't a clear-cut difference, in both cases we're talking about commanders that through combination of good stats, (self-)buffs and equipment can accomplish some task that regular troops cannot do, at least as cost-effectively. On one end of a spectrum we have a commander capable of beating standard (sub-15) province defence, on the other there's an unit capable of taking on mage-supported armies that aren't scripted with anti-SC tactics in mind. There can also be more specialized roles such as countering enemy thugs/SCs and they don't necessarily need to be deployed by their lonesome and can instead be incorporated in armies. While not a necessity, mobility is often what makes them tick and sets them apart from more conventional approaches (you usually cannot just Gateway and Cloud Trapeze an entire army on top of enemy force or even fly them to a location where an unexpecting enemy is about to move).

Because it's a spectrum, there's no clear-cut differences. You can think of it in terms of role you want the unit to fulfil or level of investment required to do so. Thugs are budget options, capable of taking on anything from province defence to armies of non-elite troops. An SC would be anti-army kind of deal. In terms of investment you could say the difference is somewhere around 50 (valuing 20 gold as 1 gem when thinking of recruitable chassis). People tend to have their own ideas about specifics but that's the general gist of it. You can also talk about heavy thugs and light SCs when discussing an optionwhere classification isn't as clear-cut.

Yes. Harder difficulty AIs means they get resource bonuses, which means they can spam hard. Marverni's main strength is spamming, so it's a poor matchup. Conversely, more skilled players use mages and other good stuff more effectively, and while there are strategies that spam freespawn, they're exceptions. Those exceptions can hopefully be nabbed with defensive earthquake traps, as can armies with big groups of human mages. That's more of a thing to do when you have either a real good opportunity or no other choice, though, since it'll often lose you your mage.

So there's actually multiple ways to play MA Mari, both most rely on some combination of a strong flaming crossbow push into angels later on.

The awake-snake Mari build basically tries to make use of their early strength while it lasts to get big quickly, and try to kill people while flaming crossbows and fire elementals are still enough to beat down whatever the enemy has. A build like this uses the typical scales snake (O3P3G3H3 dom 5 E5 awake earth snake) and plays very aggressively.

The second cookie-cutter build is an N9E4 imprisoned statue with a similar scales focus. This build is somewhat weaker early, and relies on the existing early game strength of the nation to maintain a moderate-large size, and then use its summoned angels to remain strong later on. With N9E4, their knights can expand very easily, meaning that while they won't be quite as big as a Mari with a snake, they certainly won't be tiny, and they'll have stronger lineholder and later on stronger thugs with regenerating golems and angels. Summod actually buffs this build a fair bit since it makes angels more efficient.

The new dumb meme way of playing Mari, which works well in blitzes but has difficulties as the game gets larger, is to take a massive bless (typically FxS9B9 with the baphomet) to make flagellants usable. Summod turns this from dumb to viable in small games by giving free flags (depending on dom level) when inquisitors and grand inquisitors pillage. This allows them to replenish their expendable sacreds and the front line and build up large hordes of them, but comes at the cost of significantly reduced scales and therefore much less infrastructure and magic, making it even more early-game focused than the snake build and with pretty much no backup plan once your enemies deploy enough archers or magic to beat back the tide of suicidal sacred fanatics.

Other builds typically opt for something in between the above options (eg awake drag, B9 imprisoned, etc)

Flags are flagellants. They are sacreds recruitable in any province with a temple. As mentioned earlier, Summod (a balance/content mod commonly used in domg games) also enables inquisitors and grand inquisitors to get them for free when they are ordered to pillage a province. They are unarmored and come with afflictions, but they are also cheap and easily massable sacreds, with two attacks with their flail (6/square).

There is a spell in Enchantment 4 called Flaming Arrows which makes all mundane missiles flaming. This adds a separate instance of 8 AP magical fire damage. It is very strong in that it allows a single mage to nearly double the amount of firepower that you bring (or more than double, in the case of shortbow nations).

Llamaserver is all PBEM games for Everyone Who Plays Dom4. Although some communities don't play much PBEM. I believe SA have their own direct connect server or somesuch.

Couple Questions

So I think I read with elemental resistance is worth double of what it says? So that say a 5 value of fire resistance will block a flat value of 10 fire damage? I feel like its 5 for 5, but remember seeing that somewhere.

Fire Storm still makes a prot roll and will pop fog warriors if it does 1 or more damage. The 15 FR guys (really, anyone with 6 FR or more) don't make a prot roll and are completely immune to it.

Invulnerability is functionally Base Protection, applying only to non-magical attacks. Won't help against Firestorm. Stygian Rains is mostly used by, e.g. LA Atlantis, which has a lot of troops with magic gear. Means your guys cut right through the invuln, while their guys have no such advantage.

GoR is expensive, divine name is somewhat cheaper. But both are sort of deep in Thaum, which doesn't have very many useful spells early on aside from communions. It's a neat idea, I played with the idea of turning a hill giant into a commander and slapping trample boots and black steel on him, but ended up determining that, while pretty effective, by the time you can summon hill giants, it loses that effectiveness by the time you can turn them into commanders

It'll spread between living units (of both sides) very quickly and deals 1 damage per round to affected units.

Additionally, at the end of the fight it will tick a bunch of times and basically automatically kill any units afflicted with the effect. This is probably a bug.

That makes it hard to use, because you need to

Overall you need a decently sized army to stall for time, with a bunch of high-level death mages to actually start the plague. That's a substantial investment, even if it ends up wiping an enemy army completely, and you almost certainly lose the entire investment even if things go according to plan.

Other forms of army kill just work better (more reliable, less allied losses, etc). They're also in more useful research paths than thaumaturgy.

Too expensive. 3 gems to summon, 20 gems to GoR is 23 gems for the chassis.

You probably need brand+shield+armor on top of that, which is at cheapest 20 gems more. A 43 gem thug isn't viable, and it isn't even a particularly good thug.

In summod I think GoR is cheaper, at 10 gems, but 33 gem is still way overpriced for what you're making.

Not when you take GoR into account.

Lack of intrinsic defenses also increases the cost later. Other summons like Bane Lord save gems on the equipment stage by having good armor built in.

I remember plague not spreading to longdead. The criteria for being plague-immune is probably lifeless rather than undead, so non-lifeless undead like ghouls, lictors, and mages could still be affected.

If your mages are behind a big wall of lifeless undead they should be fine, since they won't be close enough for the plague to spread to them.

You should probably do a little bit of testing before you use it in a game, the memories I'm going off are from like half a year back and I could have remembered something wrong.

A couple other pieces of advice if you want to try use plague:

The massive kill-off only occurs when the battle ends (or when troops retreat). If your enemy has regenerating troops they can easily survive plague until the battle ends.
Remember to bring multiple casters, as the spell is MRN and if you're unlucky it might not take hold on the first couple of casts.

It might just be oversight rather than a bug, but those three things have end conditions (unless you're set on fire with -ve fire resistance and heat scales). Plague has no end condition, which is what makes it so ridiculously and universally lethal.

Poison does a set amount of damage, Decay has a MR check, and burning has a % chance to go out each turn.

I think Atlantis is one faction where a rainbow mage might actually be useful. Something with nature or earth might be handy for LA at least. They dont got no nature and little earth and reinvigoration can be handy for their big sacred mages.

I'm not sure, I tend to pick rainbows if you have wide diversity but shit paths. You still need to find those gems. With literally 0 earth and 0 nature mages, a rainbow won't do you much.

Depending on the game size, I could see a Prod 3 awake being useful. Push to get massive early, with forts going up on every UW province for spamming out forgiving fathers, and fort up crossbow provinces on land. Make a push to kill 1-2 players inside of Year 2 with superheavy infantry and crossbows, then bring in evo and elementals from the water. Try to have a large enough advantage Year 3/4 to make lack of scaling a nonissue since you'll simply be twice as big as anyone else and pushing to collect thrones.

I don't know if Atlantis has enough of an early advantage to do this, though, since unlike Agartha they don't have really strong magic coming online in the early midgame.
