Other one was too but they could get a bit more strict which was to be expected with their server size).

Or it was the official ace one, I forget. Both were fun but it sounded like Shacktack had the super big stuff

>Only true for Alien Hunters and even then it's exaggerated a lot. Shen's Last Gift is a great and most importantly fair mission, if a little challenging
They are still for challenge. but yeah I'm exaggerating a bit it's more that I don't recommend them for a first play-through is my main stance. I also don't think dlc has to be fair and I think people who whine that it isn't are using a fundamentally flawed criticism because there is nothing that says anything in xcom needs to be "fair."

Game wasn't designed around it.
With the static pre-made maps, aiming angles makes some territory completely nonviable for firefights.
Like say with a building bordering a road & the map-edge- You'd normally be able to put two guys in full cover with the building and the van next to it & fight around the corner, the ayys unable to move to flanking cover.
But aiming angles gives the ayys near-flanks anyway, and renders that spot impassable.

It's decent in XC2 where there's a lot MORE cover, a lot more destruction of that cover, and generated maps. But XC has less of it so the impact is greater, and the rough-spots will be there forever. Sometimes severely limiting the maps.

Avenger is what the best ship in UFO defence was called. The one you had to build to go to Mars.

Did anyone else catch the line in the newfoundland mission where Bradford says that at least the fishing ship wasn't a criuse liner? Do you think that's an intentional reference to those TFTD terror missions that happened on board cruise ships?

you know that was going to the thing but then who would the speaker being talking too? the commander that was never rescued or maybe some LEGION tier robot forged from Julian? Making it the speaker being spoken to by the Etherals formalises the "alien campaign" feeling and reinforces the "Voice of the Elders" thing he does.
>>
>>162461896

You know, it would be relatively easy to make an Advent Campaign, take that playable alien mod and just make the enemy Xcom soldiers.

The only problems that are hard to circumvent that i can think of are the Avenger assets and the lack of voice work for an Advent boss.

>The main folder will be "Dioxine_XPiratez"
>Open that up
There will be a UFO (referes to x-com:ufo defense) and TFTD (Terror from the deep) folder.
>Open up your x-com:ufo defense folder (the vanilla game files)
>Open up the folder also named "UFO"
>copy all of the folders in there and place them in your PirateZ "UFO" folder (you don't need to copy save folders or dosbox, but I don't think it matters.
>Do the same with your vanilla terror from the deep folders, copying and pasting them into your PirateZ TFTD folder

At this point you are pretty much done, just run the executable program in your PirateZ folder named "OpenXcomExPlus33" and make sure piratez is selected for the master mod.

Let me know if it works

She's in charge of XCOM Research. It's her job to make sure that commander is considering the necessary research/science xcom will need to actually end the war and advocate for her departement. Tactical advice is Bradford's shtick, even if he sucks a it.
You will also notice that Shen and Vahlen (and Bradford) all agree that capturing ayys is a necessary risk.

If you make it through an op with dead or wounded xcom soldiers, Vahlen will never praise you, no matter how much alien materiel you gather.
The mad science persona is supported no where in that game, unless doing your job now makes you a mad scientist.

You mean a qualified medical professional? What are you even arguing even more. That cutscenes showing the team making progress towards defeating the ayys is now callous and uncaring? Ridiculous.

Your arguments are terrible. Vahlen pursues victory of mankind over the alien menace, the same as every character in X1. Her methods are pretty standard fare for defeating an enemy and she cares about the men and women in the field. She's a professional. All this "science for science" and "mad docter" spiel is fan-fic tier re-imaginings of her character.

Please explain how Interrogation=vivisection.
I'm serious, there is not a single record of Vahlen performing a vivisection in XCOM 1. Go ahead and show me where it happens. The interrogations kill the aliens, but there is no vivisection involved. You are mis-remembering.

If I'm somehow wrong about that I'll certainly apologize, but I'm checking the wiki to refresh my memory and I can't find anything referring to vivisections.
>>
>>162506109
intensive interrogation =/= vivisection
She constantly manifests that she cares about the xcom soldiers and humanity in general. She gets carried away in research like shown in >>162500875 but even then she's thinking about the fight
You need to calm down, m8, I hear unstable people are not eligible for gene therapy. You don't want to miss your chance to meet the Elders, right?
>>
>>162506774
>>162506924

Most of it is 'between the lines' but I'd like to point out the use of the word 'procedure', references to implants/internal organs, and direct-imaging.
>we have no choice but to conduct a thorough interrogation of the subject if we hope to gain anything of value from it...it made every effort to resist even our most invasive procedures during the interrogation
>We were met with limited success in retrieving new information directly from the captive
>It seems unlikely that this particular species will break under interrogation as quickly as the other captives, as we believe it was specifically intended to serve as an infiltrator. Still, perhaps if we use more aggressive techniques, we can...coax...it into revealing additional information about how the aliens arrived here......However, as it turns out, the captive was surprisingly...pliable once we began the procedure.
>With the appropriate drug therapy and... encouragement... we may be able to coax some useful intel.....We realized during the interrogation process that it was only logical for the aliens to provide the Muton with a complete understanding of their....Although the Muton was quite resistant to our techniques, despite heavy sedation, we've learned...
>This captive was even more violent and aggressive than we expected, exceeding the previous limit established by the Floater and Muton species. Despite heavy sedation, it was virtually impossible to control the subject, leaving us with little recourse other than to increase the vigor of our tactics. After probing several regions of the captive's brain, we managed to find the appropriate stimulus to calm the beast, after which we put the captive through a number of controlled physical tests.

I'd link more but post length.
As established by the Sectoid 'interrogation', use of that term is liberal.
The question is whether it refers only to inserting brain-probes, or to more extensive (Vivisection). Look at Floater.
>>
>>162508315
>Although this captive seems to be feeble of mind... clouded by rage... we might nonetheless be able to derive some benefit from a full interrogation...The most interesting aspect of its bizarre physique is the propulsion module integrated into the remaining portion of its upper torso. During controlled flight testing within the labs, we were able to observe how the Floater is capable of controlling and modulating the flow of power into the propulsion system itself. This..
>>
>>162508315
Anon there is no vivisection. When you finish the interrogation, a fresh alien corpse is added that you can then dissect for the full research topic. I looked in the wiki, and I don't see it. Furthermore I don't know what benefit a vivisection would have over the interrogation they actually talk about in the game or the traditional dissections.

Back to your other point:
>Her emotions were a ruse
Why? Why can't she just be genuinely sad /disturbed when xcom soldier die, or when aliens start bombing cities? What's this evidence that she's just faking?
All of this can be easily explained by the idea that she cares about others and mankind. It doesn't require any complex motivation.

So the question is, what motivation would Vahlen have for being a big phony, because it's not like she was going to be kicked from her job for not meeting the emotion quota, I know Tygan certainly wasn't.

>ISN'T A FUCKING ARGUMENT YOU NIGGERFUCK
I'm well aware, but we've been arguing for a while, I was just stating that I found your arguments unconvincing.

Most of her quotes about KIA are centered around refocusing/increasing research. She's more puzzled than shocked by alien terror attacks. And she praises efficiency/flawlessness more than expressing relief that everyone just made it back safe.

And oh yes, she could have been. She wouldn't have risen to her position in pre-war human society in the first place if she let it be known how little she cared for ethics & individual people. No one would have trusted her.

So not getting xcom soldier killed motivates her to refocus/increase her research huh. What a fantastic case that she doesn't actually care about them or humanity. But of course I can't trust any her posturing because clearly I should be able to tell she is lying to me.

Vahlen did nothing wrong and is not a psychopath.

>"Could we have prevented this tragedy? Perhaps we need to refocus our research efforts."
>"If only there was something we could have done... Some aspect of our research that we perhaps overlooked..."

Of course she cares about the operatives, and of course she focuses on more research. It's the thing she does, the way she can help.

>And she praises efficiency/flawlessness more than expressing relief that everyone just made it back safe.
>"Our troops really came through on this one. I'm glad everyone made it back safely."
>"A flawless effort... Not a single casualty."

Please stop being dumb anon.

They changed some of his dialogue a bit concerning the future of mankind (I think when he's reflecting on the floaters/bio machine hybrids) to be more favorable towards MECs, and then made him weirdly excited about the dismemberment of XCOM soldiers.
Shen is very reserved and cautious, and then you hit EW and he's saying stuff like: "A chop here, a chop there; and soon we'll have a soldier unlike anything the world has ever see." and he sounds extremely excited and just ready to go (Honestly might even match or exceed Vahlen's enthusiasm)

Anyway, EU Quote:
>"The more I see, the more I don't want to see. That twisted hulk of flesh and metal... driven by the alien technology, can we still call that life? We have to keep moving forward with the project, but the thought of treading the same path as the aliens... is troubling. What if they were like us once? Are we just part of a continuing cycle? If this is a glimpse of our future, I want no part of it."

EW Quote:
>"That hulk of flesh and metal troubles me. What do we risk with our own investigations into the melding of human and machine? Will we see a line in the sand and refuse to cross it? Or will we move forward, willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of total victory? I have to believe that is not our future. Provided, of course, that the aliens' technology remains in the right hands."

You can see the tone shift in the quotes. I don't know why they just didn't make him sounds way more hesitant and cautioning towards MECs instead of full happy chop shop.

My understanding of Vahlen's character is this:

She's not a sociopath or a "mad scientist", and neither EW nor X2 made her out to be those things. In both games, XCOM is fighting a desperate war against a shadowy and technologically superior enemy. Ethics simply cannot enter into the equation of this scientific arms race.

There are plenty of hints that Vahlen gets rough and downright nasty with alien subjects, both living and dead. In EU, Bradford describes her as "an alien's worst nightmare", and she shows a lot of enthusiasm for the advances that can be made with both the alien's technology, and their biology. But she also displays genuine sorrow and concern for fallen soldiers and the victims of the war.

In Alien Hunters, we get to see where her enthusiasm takes her when nobody's reining her in. Tygan never "trash-talks" Vahlen, he is just bewildered as to why she would choose to create super versions of already dangerous species. In the base game, he says that he's been told (probably by Bradford again) that she "was something of a brute in dealing with aliens". Given what we know of Vahlen, she had some purpose in working on the Rulers. We just never find out what that is.

TL;DR: Vahlen isn't crazy or amoral, none of the games portray her as such, her characterization in X2 is a direct follow-up on the one in EU. Vahlen and Tygan would likely make one hell of a team.

That disabling shot on snipers in LW, is it useful? Many enemies have secondary attacks/weapons anyway, I assume doing this to a thin man would just force them to use their acid spit, etc, which doesn't sound any better at all

It's a very good ability because you can remove the biggest threat and focus your efforts on the other enemies - sometimes they don't even reload!

Of course you could argue that it's easier to just straight up crit them, but later enemies are going to have just a bit too much HP for that

Honestly, if a thin man wants to acid you or a muton wants to grenade you, he'll do it regardless the state of his weapon, and I use disabling shots against mechtoids, sectopods, heavy floater or outsider leaders and many of those don't have a secondary way to hurt you

>no vivisection
Alright anon, since you seem so dead-set on 'torture' without vivisection, explain: how were they able to observe the floater's flight control systems in the lab in a more significant way than standard field video?
And what is it that they do which constitutes torture in your mind? How does it benefit their research?
Brain probes alone are certainly unpleasant if you're conscious, but they aren't extremely painful by themselves.
That alone would hardly make her worthy of bradford's title of "an alien's worst nightmare".

Vivisection meanwhile would benefit research, is one of the most gruesome torture methods available, (easily earning her bradford's title), and would provide significant insight on that floater "interrogation".

>I'm going to go with the simpler explanation
Anon, I'm trying to show that the 'meme' (aka CANON) IS in-line with her behavior in the first game.
So far your reasoning for how the meme is bad & betrayed her original incarnation has been "she could TOTALLY be a normal person and do/say those things too".
That doesn't disprove anything, it just gives you room to keep hold of your headcanon.

>refocus/increase research
The point was that of the things she could say to the commander, many of them are along the lines of "if only we'd spent more time/money on research, maybe this could have been prevented". Admittedly, it is a stretch. She probably does agree with what she says and would rather avoid soldiers dying. But focusing on her own pursuits and how it relates to the tragedy (when talking to her boss & funds-keeper) is still self-serving and gives more credence to her single-track research mind.

>>162512607
If you read all the quotes you should have noticed what I said: 9/10 is praise for their flawlessness/efficiency, not happiness that they survived.

She was a cold, logical scientist meme that excitedly flayed aliens alive & single-mindedly advocated for RnD in the first game.
The meme's spot-on.

Could be on the same level of dismemberment if conscious. Consider being awake and realizing you're losing control of your body and everything that makes you who you are.

Plus I've heard from multiple sources that running an electric current through the brain is more painful than giving birth. So there's that, too.

>9/10 is praise for their flawlessness/efficiency, not happiness that they survived.

>how were they able to observe the floater's flight control systems in the lab in a more significant way than standard field video
They have the floater in a controlled containment unit where they observe it inches way while analyzing with whatever cutting edge tech they have. It's not similar to the battlefield in any way. There is no vivisection, that's your headcanon, it's not in the game, nor does it "need" to be to explain anything.

Your argument literally hinges around the idea that when Vahen says something, I should ignore it. And why should I ignore it as evidence? Because she's a psychopath of course! And why is she a psychopath? Because she does her job well and she doesn't care about the troops because whenever she expresses concern she's actually lying to you. It's circular reasoning..

If I take Vahlen for her word, which I don't have any reason not too, then she's a scientist who believes the research xcom is doing will save the world who advocates for her department and is motivated by defeating the alien menace while giving the soldiers on the ground the best possible chances of survival and doesn't want to see any get injured or go down, and is actually upset when your squad suffers casualties.
Using your line of reasoning, I shouldn't even believe Shen is a sane person, look how obsessed he is with his "engineering" and "equipment" and chopping peoples arms and legs off.
>>
>>162547345
what the fuck anon vahlen is not the soldiers' mom and she knows that a soldier's job is to fight and probably die

saying that their operations are very efficient and flawless is the best praise you can give an xcom operative, do you expect her to go "the poor operatives commander we shouldn't send them they might cut themselves with something let's just send all SHIVs"

nigga get fucking real, she is glad when soldiers make it back uninjured, but she knows that death is a probability when you're fighting a WAR

Basically a ITZ sniper on steroids, but infantry.
>>

I don't think X1 Bradford was quite high-brow enough to be referring to 'consciousness dismemberment' when calling Vahlen a nightmare.

And nah, the brain doesn't have any sensory nerves. People are awake for brain-surgery IRL. It's more of 'uh my arm kinda feels tingly now', 'everything's a bit more green-tinged'.
Passing electricity through any other part of the body WILL hurt. That includes the membranes around the brain. But not the brain itself.

>how would you say that in a professional way
For comparison:
Unlike Shen, she doesn't bring up morale. She doesn't mention mercy. She doesn't express concern about the conditions the soldiers are facing on the ground.
Instead she only mentions the efficiency & flawlessness of their 'work' and surprise at their 'combat abilities'. The observable/objective parts, never the feelings & secondary considerations that go with it.

Anon you haven't addressed the torture angle which the game explicitly says is going on. Which makes it seem like you have no alternative explanation for it.

Nope, it hinges on looking at ALL of her comments, (and behavior eg vivisection), not just the cherry-picked few that sound normal-enough.

Not when you're putting things into it. But when you're running current through the brain, things happen.

Things like seizures that cause broken bones. That's why mouthguards and general anesthesia is required for ECT in civilized countries nowadays.

I don't really get how any electrical stimulation to the brain would aid in interrogation though - especially considering it's universally agreed it has a risk of memory loss - seems more like movie bullshit logic to me, but I'm trying to work with what information the game gave us.

>Instead she only mentions the efficiency & flawlessness of their 'work' and surprise at their 'combat abilities'. The observable/objective parts, never the feelings & secondary considerations that go with it.
She may be overcompensating so she doesn't seem weak and emotional as a female.

She might have been raised in a family that didn't show those kind of sentiments.

There's a lot of explanations for that and I think you're reading way too much into it.

Actually I think Firaxis is playing to the Nazi doktor stereotype too much, but that's just my opinion.

I feel like you guys aren't even arguing the same point. Who cares if she specifically performed vivisections or not? The point is that both games portray her a brilliant, well-intentioned extremist who doesn't let "ethics" stand in the way of learning as much as possible from alien corpses and prisoners. X2 didn't warp her personality, it merely expanded upon it.

There are some country bonuses in LW that give bonus stats to your newly trained soldiers, like Russia's Spetnaz giving one extra health to assault and gunners. Do I get this bonus if I get enough experience on rookies to promote them but not promote them until I get the bonus, or do I need to start training rookies after I get the bonus? Might sound stupid but IIRC in vanilla when you get Iron Will, it didn't affect the promotions you saved before you got it, so it can be the same I guess

Hello. What is piratez and how do I do it? What should I research? Is there a quick guide for which out of the hundreds of starting weapons I get are useful for which types of soldiers? Where the hell do I get a craft weapon from?

Always full cover
Don't be afraid to fall back to better positions and have the ayys come to you
Have your team spaced apart so you can flank and prevent flanking maneuvers
Don't bunch up as the ayys will spam gernades/poison.
>>
>>162566878

I've played EW, LW and X2, but I never understood the always full cover meme.

Like, I get it, half cover is as good as no cover at all with a neon-sign that says "spray hot plasma shots all over my face please cover me in hot plasma and make me lick your rifle clean please i beg you" but sometimes I just can't find 6 spots of full cover for my soldiers while engaging ayys.

Am I positioning my troops too close?
>>
>>162566071
>operating proceedure
Cover yourself in smoke. Use a guy with shit stats to find the enemies and have everyone else shoot him from inside the smoke

>Guns
Rocket launchers are OP. Pistols and Auto Cannons are useless. Laser rifles are better than everything except heavy plasma you might use laser pistols on front line guys because their low TU cost means they can be effectivley spammed at close range

>Strategy
research lasers right away. Equip all ships with laser cannons as soon as possible. armour is generally not very effective. Build a second base at the beginning of the second month and by the end of that month you should have 2 labs and 100 scientists at the main base. Manufacture and sell laser cannons for cash. Build lasers for fun & profit.

We all do, but most likely never. The whole thing started way back in LW years, where a few people would bitch about how pistols were useless now that they only have two ammo and insane range penalties. That was bullshit as they were great for captures, for when you really, really needed 1 damage somewhere or you were plain out of ammo, like an actual sidearm.

One brave anon was so ideologically opposed to people spouting the meme that they were bad that he started replying first to almost every thread saying "PISTOLS ARE USEFUL" with a picture of someone using one. Time passed and he kept it up, solidifying it as a meme. Pre-release footage of XCOM2 released by Beagle showed us a gunslinger sharpshooter waifu, Stacy Bell who tore shit up with her revolver. Pic related. This triggered a whole bunch of "PISTOLS ARE FINALLY USEFUL"-posts in /xcg/, and there was much rejoicing.

Now, we don't know if it's still him or just an anon paying homage and carrying on his legacy, but almost every thread starts with PISTOLS ARE USEFUL to this day.

There's a piece of /xcg/ history for you.

>>162566836
Research whatever sounds interesting or useful to you, just don't stagnate in some areas because you'll need them later as prerequisites for other fields. Early on try to get a basic armor like Durathread or Scale, or use camouflage outfits. Researching bombs to make basic grenades is a good early step as well.

For your starting weapons, the sledgehammer and chainsaw both smash through walls and smash motherfuckers in a single blow usually. The really early guns are pretty bad but a few muskets can be useful to snipe drones and shotguns wipe out squishy targets easily and provide deadly short range reaction fire. Molotovs and powder bombs are strong and easy to use. The handle is probably the most reliable stunning weapon on most characters, and capturing people is pretty important so don't overlook it.

For craft weapons and better craft you're gonna have slim pickings for a while. Some early researches will put basic craft and weapons at your disposal in the shops, and you can loot mid-tier weapons from enemy craft you capture. One of your first big milestones in technology will be to figure out how to turn the wrecked ship in your storage into a decent ship that also comes with a decent unique weapon.

Should I buy more researchers? I already bought more runts cause we're manufacturing grog for profit. Also what's a worker? I don't have any now but in a previous game I enslaved a shipwrecked girl and got a worker and I didn't know what that was.

Yeah you generally want to funnel your cash into hiring and supporting more scientists.

Workers are paid slaves. They provide more storage but they cost money instead of providing it. Some captives you can't enslave because they're civilians so you can hire them instead. In the case of shipwrecked gals, you can enslave or hire them. I recommend the slave as they provide a pretty good research that's otherwise uncommon to obtain.

I saw the Speaker at an Advent Burger in New Washington District 15 yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for holophotos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued waiting for my order, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pick up my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Advent Burgers in his arms without paying.

The Snek at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Ssssir, you need to pay for thosssse firsst.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the burger boxes and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any elerium infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each burger box and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

So how does continent bonus work?
I have Fire When Ready bonus on the north america region, but i have no idea how to activate it or how many radio relays i have to build to get it.

Also, it really works like the description says?
Because if it is like that of unlocking new experimental ammo and nades, i think that shit would be very useful with SPARKs.

I still don't know why it was even DLC - the other DLC weapons/ruler armour don't fit anarchy's design, the old looks don't fit anarchy's design, it's just some nigh random "punk" aesthetic jammed into the options.

That's it, I'm modding the airbus to have more fuel.
>>
>>162657675
I was just playing this and I had the thing that you make out of the hull and the tiny drill in the manufacturing queue but no one was building it because I was having them work on something else first. Then the month changed over, my finances when red and all manufacturing projects were cancelled. For some reason that destroyed my hull and tiny drill so I think that project is undoable for me now.

Also shitty to note that manufacturing projects that require no money can't be done when you have no money
>>

>>
>>162657936
Oh wow, that sounds like a shitty bug.

>>162657994
I just checked, the fuel didn't change, so maybe the change in this version is that they're giving me newbie missions a lot farther outside of my home base zone?
>>
>>162658103
yeah. the airbus can only cover half the globe abouts so if missions spawn outside that zone you can't do them.

I didn't get a satisfactory answer last time but what the hell do these slaves do? There are all kinds of slaves and I don't know what they do.
>>
The aliens are kind and wise and we should allow them to help us ascend to higher levels of culture
>>
>>162658358
Once thing slaves do is that they actually count as negative storage space. If you go look at your base info and look at their stores value, they will have a negative value. In short, they add storage space to your base.

Also later on you can use them to make money, and they can be used in research projects. Ideally you capture everyone and interrogate them until they have nothing left to tell, and then you start making them into slaves imo. Mostly the different tiers of slaves just decide how much extra storage they give you, and I know some research projects/slave projects require higher tier slaves (ones made from stronger or rarer enemies).
>>
>>162658883
Only vipers, the rest can fuck off
>>
>>162658887
Alright, I can work with that. So are you saying that I should keep researching hostages as long as I have the option to? Like in xcom you can keep researching captured aliens but you don't get anything for researching continued soldiers. Should I research hoe and then later when I capture more hoes continue researching them until I no longer have the option to?
>>
>>162660372
In general yes. Sometimes I'll sell them if they're valuable and I'm hurting for cash or don't need the research they can unlock (check the tech tree to see).
>>
>>162660637
Gotcha. And here I was robbing everyone who came to my prison.
>>
>>162660747
Yeah making them into slaves still gives whatever material they usually have, it just gives you less immediate money. Some high tier units have very good material on them but can't be made slaves, those are good for robbing.
>>

Build a separate base with hangar and outpost and send your bus there with your troops when a static mission appears nearby. Or stop being poor and buy a Pachyderm, worth every penny.

Consider also the positioning of your base. Central Europe covers a very large number of cities and several game regions, so you'll be closer to many missions. Same with Mexico.

I wish a Xenonauts or X-Com style game could implement vehicles with a ton of detail to them with aliens using vehicles as well.

The funnest way to play Xenonauts was to go full SHOCK AND AWE with a heavy tank, stormguns and jetpack snipers. Fuck it just give every soldier a rocket launcher and have the predator suits carry the extra ammo, level entire town centers and blow through the walls of UFOs.

Shit I want ability to call in airstrikes with a one-turn delay if you have a jet fighter escort the chinhook/VTOL aircraft, possibly giving the aliens a similar ability if they have fighter escorts.

Xenonauts makes a point of avoiding the typical shit that makes XCOM particularly cool and weird, the Psiops, the cybernetics, which leaves a gap.
This gap isn't insurmountable, shit, Xenonauts is set in the middle of the cold war, an arms race was occuring at the very time. If Xenonauts dedicated itself to representing actual infantry tactics with light vehicle/gun carrier support, heavy weapons teams, mortars and air support, that could be really fucking cool, especially if the aliens could potentially have access to similar abilities.

It'd make Xenonauts unique without requiring it to be super sci-fi, you don't need the science magic, but the increasing complexity and access to heavier and heavier weapons until the end game consists of bringing massive firepower to bear, whereas Xcom (mainly newer ones) are very much elite smaller squads of super special genetically and cybernetically enhanced forces.

That is a compliment to both it and its forebear. The fact that the original XCOM was not supplanted or surpassed by anything in eighteen years except its own remake is worthy of note. It was a great game – one of the classics – but I think most people who aren’t hopeless nostalgics or bitter grognards will agree that at a remove of nearly two decades it’s hard to even play, much less fully appreciate. That would require seeing past a 320×200 image cluttered with barely-decipherable little icons to control a game that expects you to micromanage every trivial detail, right down to whether your little dudes kneel or not.

Nothing has surpassed UFO Defense. If you think it's a micromanaging grog game you're a fucking retard who has no idea how to play what is really a very simple game that just has a learning curve. I bet you're the kind of petulant little faggot who thinks that not having context icons in Half-Life means the game is outdated.

For the record, I started with EU and I now think vanilla EU is boring as fuck compared to UFODef and I think Vanilla XCOM 2 was a huge fucking letdown-- it said you could be GORILLA WARFARE ROGUE AGENTS but then it was just a reskin of EU's council system done in a very slightly different way.

In UFO Defense you can go full terrorist org. You can bomb entire civilian districts to complete your mission. You can lose /every/ funding nation and not lose the game-- instead surviving on black market funds to keep your base running -- and most of all you can take more than five piddly little dinks on a mission.

>That would require seeing past a 320×200 image cluttered with barely-decipherable little icons to control a game that expects you to micromanage every trivial detail, right down to whether your little dudes kneel or not.

lol fuck off you retard. If you read the manual or just tinkered around for a bit with the menu you'd learn it all makes sense and lacks labels because at the time it was difficult to provide translations with every version of the game, so having recognizable icons was more sensible.

And having your guys kneel is "super intricate micromanaging" now? Is pressing CTRL in Half-Life micromanagement, now? Is using Hunker Down some super fucking act of acrobatics, you fucking sped? Go back to the shortbus.

This slouching, slack-jawed mouth-breather is truly worthless.

>cliffhangers or epic twist
These elements don't make a good story.

I'm probably the only fa/tg/uy here who cares about this, but I would have liked more information about the alien forces and the world in both Firaxis games. In EU we get barely any information on the aliens and only get the ruling class' opinion on each them in the final mission. We never learn how they work together, what they think about each other, how their society is organized, what their true goal is, nothing. 2 in particular had a tremendous opportunity for interesting worldbuilding since it was set on an Earth changed by the occupation, but we don't even get the news headlines of the first game. (Do have to give a shoutout to the environment design of X2 though - it told a story in itself.)

In my opinion, XPiratez does this the best. The amount of worldbuilding and backstory in this game is incredible, and despite its cheesy exploitation theme, I'm still drawn in and interested.

>replayed mutliple times with different protagonists and the "simple narrative" is what work best in that setting
No argument there - twists and "xyz character betrays you in the end!" would never work for this kind of medium.

My dream is to see an X-COM type game with multiple interesting factions like Apocalypse or Alpha Centauri battling for control of the planet (or system), and the emergent storytelling occurs organically as part of the gameplay. For example, in one game, the EXALT faction could get lucky early on and expand their territory, and now you're fighting more gene-modded soldiers and you get reports of what life is like in territories under their control. Furthermore, each faction could have their own research tree, resulting in differently enhanced enemies you could be facing in each game.

Think Mount and Blade Warband for the kind of emergent storytelling I'd like to see.

>Some people call what the new XCOM does “dumbing down.” I think a game where the world’s deadliest trained killers don’t need to be told how to duck behind a low wall has been smarted up.
This is one of the dumbest things I've read. I don't like to call it dumbing down, because I think new XCOM does its own thing and is good so I usually call it streamlining. But you can totally tell this person was never a real x-com fan and just felt he needed to pay his respects and establish credentials he doesn't have before asserting that new XCOM was "superior" to the old. What a tool.

I made the Solid Snake Voice Pack that's on the workshop and was working on a Cass voice pack but lost interest in the game so I never finished it.

Is Bradford Autistic about Trains?

He won't shut up about them, it seems like every second mission he has to say something about Trains.

Would using frost bomb near an hack objective destroy the objective? There's a group of aliens I want to freeze just near it. Or would it also freeze the counter? Would be pretty cool
>>
>>162714651
it doesn't cause any damage, not even environmental damage so i dont think it would destroy it but i have never done it

Fun Fact!: Those hologram barriers aren't used at all in-game, but still exist within the game's files. As well as a one-way window that would be snapped onto the checkpoint fences
