As far as on release Civ games go, it's fucking amazing.

Compared to it's predecessors who have expansions and years of mods on top of them, it's pretty shit.
>>
>>162346359

People hated 5 on release and now it's pretty much what everyone plays.

The lesson is not to buy Civ games - or any games, really - until they have an expansion or two and have dropped to half the price.
>>
>>162348654
Pretty much this. I remember people not budging from 4 until 5 got expansions, and I'm sure the same will happen again.
>>
>>162348824
>I remember people not budging from 4 until 5 got expansions
A lot of people refuse to budge even now, the change was huge. It was like, I dunno, the S2 -> R2 gap. A lot of people will stick to S2, Empire, Napoleon, and the pre-warscape games, because that's just how big of a difference was between the two titles.
VI needs to be fixed and needs to be fixed fast just like R2 needed to be fixed (CiVI isn't that bad but the idea is the same), but V is just better right now. In almost every way.

I actually didn't like the menus.
To give an example of my aesthetic taste, imo the best windows design was Windows 2000 with their hard edged grey menus.
I didn't really like the brown and pastel but to me I'm talking about the models, somewhat more 'realistic'.

Did a 20 hour playthrough in MP with a friend.

Did a war with a Fallen Empire in the end where there was a lot of cat and mouse.

Two things I've learned after this long game.

1. Kinetic Weapons are awesome, especially Flak Artiellry and Giga Cannon fleets.

2. Wormhole drive sucks when it comes to large fleets,
Warp Drive is so much better for both speed and range because In the start my fleet tends to get caged behind enemy lines after peace.
>>
>enemy outnumbers me 3-1
>he declares war on me
>run laps around his empire, destroying mining and research stations
>if you loiter in the fringes until his doomfleet is in the inner solar system it takes him a super long time to chase you after warping out
>none of this really matters anyway because it gets boring long before it becomes effective
>>
>>162384181

War is always boring as shit in stellaris.
>>
>>162387124

it's a little more interesting fighting human players because they'll actually shift fleets and ship designs around to counter you, as well as making smaller fleets to go around destroying your infrastructure in response

it's still pretty boring though
>>
>>162383493

>1. Kinetic Weapons are awesome, especially Flak Artiellry and Giga Cannon fleets.

Energy weapons used to be king simply for particle lances.

You could legitimately do nothing but spam autocannons and particle lances with some strong point defense back when the game first came out and you'd melt most fleets.

Since they restricted lances to XL weapon hardpoints they're pretty shit, (though, so is the giga cannon, you can swap that out for more kinetic artillery and get more DPS and more flexibility).

Current weapon balance is neutron torpedoes and kinetic artillery with auto-cannons and point defense as far as I can tell.

FEs awakening is possibly the best thing in Stellaris right now, alongside discovery. It encapsulates the sci-fi feel perfectly. Okay, I got it. It's pretty clever, actually. Each unit is actually a captain, and upon upgrade, can get a little helper to fight by his side. At level 2, he get one, at level 5, he get four.
You're limited to, what, twenty captains, but if you upgrade them, you can quickly go very high. But at the cost of a reduced versatility. And healers are shit.

It reminds me a bit of Star Ruler 2, with fleets being reduced but not always destroyed, and being able to quickly recover.

Hey, guys, Stellaris question here.

Which is better, the Direct Democracy government, or the Theocratic Republic government?

The first is Individualist/Materialist and gives happiness + increased leader XP, the second is Individualist/Spiritualist and gives happiness + additional food.

Both get access to the Galactic Stock Exchange (empire) and the Hyper-Entertainment Forum (planetary), but Direct Democracy gets the Research Institute (empire) while Theocratic Republic gets the Symbol of Unity (planetary).

http://www.stellariswiki.com/Government_types#Direct_Democracy

http://www.stellariswiki.com/Government_types#Theocratic_Republic

Which would you say is a better choice overall?

I could see Theocratic Republic (and its enhanced form, Transcendent Republic) being one of the better ways of keeping your conquered xeno pops in line (happiness + negative ethics diversion) but their reliance on a planetary building kind of puts a damper on that.

Does the sector AI build planetary uniques, or is that something that I'd have to do myself?
>>
>>162428192
>+ additional food.
I don't think that is worth it over the +15% leader XP

But depending on your empire the -15% ethics divergence from Transcendent Empire could be really good. But I still prefer Irenic Democracy (+4 core systems) or Subconscious Consensus (+10% happiness +30% leader XP) as I like to keep the least amount of species as possible.

Pretty sure sectors build uniques, whether they build the right ones is another question though...
>>
>>162428192
>>162429396
Don't forget that Spiritualist gets you Psionic Jump Drives, not to mention all of the other psychic technologies.
>>
>>162428192
Personally, I don't think ethics divergence goes well together with individualism, because the whole point of individualism is that it doesn't really matter much if your pop's ethos diverges. And Ethic's divergence seems to be almost pointless for keeping the conquered peasants in check since they already start out with different Ethics.

I once did a game with alphamod and the ethics+government rebuilt, and went for one of those hive mind -50% divergence full anti ethics divergence things. Ended up with most conquered planets being around -70 divergence or so. After a decade, the effect was that "some" of the pops "might" be less fanatical in one of their previously held beliefs. So in normal play, I don't think it's feasible, low ethics divergence is mostly a preventative measure. Once you conquered pops that don't have your ethos, it doesn't really matter if you're positive, so it's best to embrace them for who they are. It's current year after all, diversity is your strength. So from a pure gameplay perspective, I'd go with direct democracy.

Ethics divergence is more important if you really need to keep your Ethos, e.g. if you want to have militaristic slavers. Especially if you're going the xenophobe route, because that means you can't purge or enslave your main species, so not a single one of them can be allowed to step out of line.

If you want to keep conquered pops in check, the only good method is happiness or slavery. So I tend to play the game either as a utopian paradise, or full on authoritarianism.

Just tried it, it looks like a pain in the ass. First, the AI is coded to have versatile armies. So I can't just spam infantry
Second, the maps are big. Like, insanely big.
Third, the units are so fragile : an anti-air light vehicle can one shot an helicopter.
Fourth, I get money by capturing people, which is nice, but I have a FUCKING HUGE hospital that can only hold ten people.

The hospital acts like the Hacker Center in C&C meaning you can only station 10 in them but still get money from other hackers around the map (or n AoW keep capturing enemies)
Also how do you like the fact that heavily damaged vehicles and infantry actually sit back and dont participate in combat despite being selected?
Also send your infantry in buildings or behind cover (carwrecks etc), that gives them some needed survivability
>>
>>162432618

I kinda liked that. It saved an Abraham tank.

Crawling is extremely powerful in that game. A shame only marines can do it.

But I really think I need to install the base game, I got High Treason because it was in two parts instead of three, but there's no tutorial.
>>
>>162431219
I like it because it makes it easier to take advantage of the resources I have available in the early game but I switch to martial empire in the mid game to get my war on.

What's an old RTS, either on Steam or GoG?
After playing Seven Kingdoms 2, Act of War, Rise of Nations and Dragonshard, I kinda want to try more games.

I always find it hilarious that Dragonshard was made by the same studio who developped Battle Realms, since the basic concept is pretty similar.

Quick Stellaris question

Does multiple Wormhole Stations at the same spot make my Fleet jump faster?

I had a fleet of about 130k yesterday and it took about 60 days for it to jump.

Could I halve this by building another wormhole station or do I have to split my fleet into a number of fleets equal to the number of wormhole stations because of the queue system?

Smaller scale than your average RTS, instead it has persistent character progress, some bits of persistent maps and a few choices and consequences, so you'd better play carefully and plan ahead.

Sort of. Multiple stations don't speed up your jumping technically they just let you have multiple wormholes opening at the same time. BUT, bigger fleets take longer for their wormhole to charge so you can split your fleet up when you're jumping somewhere to make it faster and then re-merge them when they're at their destination so you still only need 1 admiral for the fleet.

UA: Centralized Development: May not create settlers or annex cities. Capital city may now work all tiles 6 range out.
Bonus: Units have a combat bonus while in friendly territory, but suffer from attrition when in enemy territory.
Unique Unit: Diplomat/Surveyor. Unit that works like great generals do in V and allows you to annex the surrounding tiles of the unit if next to your border.
Unique Building: Provides a unique luxury the civilization does not currently own for each adjacent World Wonder (or within 2 tiles?)
>>
>>162510351
Wouldnt work. Players and AI ignore tons of wonders and it would let you amass them with ease, plus having that much production in one city from tiles would guarantee most late game wonders. Would be impossible to stop snowball if you didnt have an aggressive neighbor in ancient or classical.

Its fucking stupid, why dont they use mechanics that already work? I really like how every city is an investment in IV, it will take money, time and effort to eventually develop them and you can bankrupt yourself with overgrabbing but
you have to expand or get left behind, which is a basic 4X thing. It made me so mad to see huge tracts of unclaimed land in the modern age in V There is a rthyme to expansion in IV and its different in every game based on the lay of the land and your needs and other players etc. Its never the same experience, building an empire always feels fun, there is always something to micro or make a tiny bit more efficent.

Stellaris misses a lot of late game ubertechnology. Even fucking Spore let you to be a full on mad scientist, creating/transporting species, reshaping planets on your whim, making custom biomes and stuff.

Plus I really miss rare übertechnologies. Fallen Empires and million year old ruins should all have something unique and completely special, a "path not taken" something so advanced and weird youre scientists are struggling to make use of it.

Player tech levels plateu out way too early, I want to build fucking ringworlds and invade other galaxies.

Same, I don't understand why they left it to mods to make it possible to terraform dead planets for that matter either.
I imagine it'd be a nightmare technically and for balance purposes but still.
>>
>>162528090
Honestly, I think a game centered on that whole "rehabilitation of a ruined planet" would be fun to play. With cute graphisms like Slime Rancher, and complex interactions between varied species.

I almost feel like reinstalling Spore now, but I know I'll have to go through all the annoying phases to unlock space again, and then grind these fucking badges to not have to return to my home planet every 30 seconds.
Terraforming was fun, but the rest of the game was so bad, dammit.

never liked undead in fantasy. Besides, this game seems to be based around having some elite killer squads of experienced veterans that you constantly feed map units, so with a fragile faction the only change I see is that I need to dump production into meatshields until my veterans can take a hit.

I'm currently playing as a dwarfen theocrat just as a point of reference. I thoroughly enjoy the hero creation options and racing to tombs/ziggurats to get more units and items.

But I didn't know that with theocrat you can actually reach a stupid perk that makes your units resurrect if you win. Seems a tad overpowered.

>>
>>162530262
the early game is a slog, i'll admit that.

The main problem you face is that you must level up on certain monsters until you can handle bigger ones, like lone wolves, single orcs or some goblins/peasants. Spearmen are already tier II threat that you shouldn't take on early.

I think the biggest gamechanger for me was picking Guild Master leader, because he pays less for leveling up cities, and leveling up cities is important because it's the quickest way to heal your army. Picking the guy with 15% regen is weaker since the melee heroes are shit
>>

which expansion? There were only 2, Galleans Return which basically was what would be called NG+ today (campaigns for leveled up heroes) and Rise of the Elves. Undead campaign was already in the base game.

Distant Worlds is fine, except for one thing : it never tells you where the problem is. If you have issues with refuelling, the game won't tell you if you miss mines, cargos, or if your fleet are just out of reach.

>>
>>162535782
In EU4, it's pretty fun. Adds its own events, and allow you to either have the CPUs nations being friends, or have them all neutrals.

In Stellaris, it's just cosmetic. Or at least it was last time I checked, with Chirpers used as population and characters used as leaders.
Through I once had "Compa" assassinating Purple Heart to take her place and become the CPU (Divine Emperor, actually).
>>
>>162535261

We all did man. Sometimes I wistfully imagine how good of a game it could be and how awesome things they could add with barely any effort.

My pet peeve is the trait system. There is barely anyt to choose from and they dont really impact the game as hard as they should. At the very least there should be a list of 30-40 traits to mix and match unique species every game or have deeper and more interesting inpact. For example, solitary should limit your pop number on planets instead of the dinky happiness malus. They should also greatly impact your industry, war and diplomacy.
>>
>>162536280
So far, traits are just for roleplay purpose. Ethics have a better impact, but even that feels limited.
>>
>>162536429

Right? I'm especially mad about it because its not some grand design challange requiring loads of resources, its fucking modder tier stuff.
>>

God damn I love Endless Legend.
I even got Early Access Endless Space 2.
>>
>>162536614
I should feel grateful that it changes the answers to some events, but that kind of stuff is low-RPG tier. Why have a system like that if you can't follow it in game?

It'd be like having a relationship system between characters but still have them insulting each others in the events. Bad example.

Disciples 2 Gold.
>>
>>162542332
>>162542542
Since Gold still has you install both of them anyway, there's a bit of an oddity between Gallean's Return and Rise of the Elves; BOTH contain the original Dark Prophecy campaigns, but Rise of the Elves adds a 5th faction and gameplay tweaks while Gallean's Return has the two expansions (Guardians of the Light and Servants of the Dark) which add extra high-difficulty mini-campaigns for the original 4 factions (that are meant to be done after the main campaigns and allow you to import characters from those).

The original release order was Dark Prophecy -> GotL/SotD/Gallean's Return -> Rise of the Elves -> D2 Gold -> Rise of the Elves Gold (has an extra 4 mission mini-campaign).

Not even Wacom pen can make touchscreen tolerable for gaming so after clearing the small map on my phone I have now started campaign on PC.
Meet God Emperor the MC, Diane Moon the predefined waifubait and some lvl 1 rng tumblrtards.
That start looks pretty damn great, with huge farm and big subrbs directly available, if only I could find some space to recruit "?" survivors out there first.

I'd say 9 survivors is very small group. Endgame is like 30-50 people.
The game is a sort of 4x/management sim with emphasys on HR: people want rest, safety, entertainment etc, and also sometimes they don't want to be in same squad with other people, and you have to keep that in mind.

So what are peoples opinions on what the strongest factions in Endless Legend is?

I personally love Necrophages.

I would like to be good with Forgotten too, but I feel thet are pretty lackluster with their shit units and the huge problem with taking down Cultists.

I've heard Broken Lords with Drakken army leaders and Ardent Mages gouvernors are some of the most OP you can get with their superior dust income and healing by dust ability together with huge tankyness.

Any thoughts?

Rebuild has all of eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate but no army building, instead you recruit survivors with class/stat level and some skills each, give them equipment and send out on missions to scavenge loot, reclaim land or recruit more survivors. There are also other factions, some roam the map or appear randomly, some have their own forts that may or may not be friendly and supportive to outsiders.

Doesnt reallly matter because the AI is so tardy on expansion. Every single game when I see them start in 4-6 planets, I always get my 5th sooner then they get their 7th and because of careful human management I blow past them and never look back. Do you remember the fucking insanity of release sector AI? planet unique buildings getting torn up for farms when the planet was full and had a 15 food sufficit? enslaving 70% happiness pops working in biolabs bordering 3 native reserves? Randomly deleting assisting science ships or just never using them?

Yeah, AI empires are all like that, like they are ran by a bureau. No wonder they fall back and stagnate after you beat them once and destroy their spaceports.

Endless Space/Legend combat was never any worse to me than combat from other 4x games.

Endless Space 2 lets you pick your formation and which way they go on the battlefield (read: engage at close, medium or long ranges). I like it.

They're having egalitarianism be the opposite of authoritarian. Which is silly because then I cannot make a government that enforces egalitarian values which can be interesting for sci-fi. ("There must be an equal amount of every species in every social class! We will demote and promote people's wealth to correspond with this." or even just communist-dictator type government collectivist-authoritarian-egalitarian.) There's a mod that has Elitism/Egalitarian and Authoritarian/Libertarian while having a collectivist/individualist system which works much better in my opinion.

Like japan. They love foreign culture, borrowing technologies, concepts even language in the form of wasei-eigor. They are very polite and courteous with tourists but in the moment you want to settle there you get stonewalled and ignored completely. Korea is pretty similar too.

i dont even see an option to negotiate a wormhole building treaty

It would be cool if there was an advanced tech to create wormhole ships. Battleship sized support ships that can travel with fleets and generate their own wormholes.

If they get blown up the entire fleet gets stranded

Yeah some of the DLC features make the game more complicated, and it can be overwhelming for a new player.
>>
>>162585136
I like adding more ethics but I don't like giving you a fuck ton of picks. Should still just be 3 with an option to get a 4th later on maybe. This way there's tons more variety in empires.
>>
>>162604634

I really, really want a way for government to be able to change ethics and switch between government types more organically instead of just spending purple man mana on it. I mean, seriously, a democracy gets turned into a star empire or vice versa and no one gives a shit? No reaction from leaders and the citizens at all?

Ethics of the people should also changed based on experience. Bordering expansionist, genocidal, space toad slavers should make your pops more xenophobic and militarist as they fear for their safety and request military buildup. On the other hand, bordering cute :3 smiley pacifistic space starfishes or hor xenophiliac space elves would make your people to ease up and turn into xeno fuckers. Mining frozen hellholes with low food turn more communal, rich trading planets with several alien species turn more individualistic, planet covered in labs eventually turn materialistic etc. I'm so desperate for some organic change and natiobuilding in this game. I'm fucking SICK and tired of the purple man mana doing everything and clicking +1 on power plants and mines.
>>
>>162605495
Yeah influence feels like a really cheap stopgap measure to fill in for all the stuff they couldn't put in the game. Organically shifting pops and ethics seems like something they're going to just gradually work on, if the next update is any indication they're still playing with how pops' ethics diverge and how factions develop which I'm excited to see since it will make it feel like your pops are actually people instead of neurotic worker drones.
>>
>>162605495
Purple mana represents your political ability to do something without suffering other consequences.
>>
>>162606006

Its too abstracted. What the fuck establishing new colonies has to do with appointing new generals?
>>
>>162606006
That explanation doesn't fly when there's no mechanic for enacting those changes that does come with penalty. The only way to effect changes in your empire is to expend purple mana, there's no way to, say, start a referendum to change your governing policies or restructure your government. What I'd like is the ability to stage coups within your own empire against the current regime. You pick a leader to lead the coup and what kind of government you want to change to (depends on the leader), and the chance of success depends on the leader's experience. How upset your populace is depends on their overall ethics. So to pull this kind of implementation off you'd have to have organic pop ethics and also more leader variety to represent the different types of government.
>>
>>162606317

To be honest, there is absolutely zero difference in how your government works out in the game. The bonuses are just kinda there but your direct democracy works exactly the same way as a mega corp or theocracy or military dictatorship. The only thing I can recall are the elections and agendas.
>>
I need a 4x to play while I wait for Civ 6 and Stellaris to get good. What do?
>>
>>162606612
That's true. Would be neat if democratic nations had to vote on any major decisions like going to war or accepting trade deals. Would make playing a democratic or oligarchy more interesting for sure. Imagine being a military junta and you want to end a war with another empire but the majority of your generals and admirals still want it to continue so the vote to end it keeps getting defeated.

evolution lines for melee warriors aren't equal, but you may want to consider the templar line on smaller maps or maps with a lot of mages on them.

The Nosferatu hero is probably better than the rest once you ramp up his damage

Don't assume your paralyzer will hit often after gaining AOE, or buff his hit% before major fights

Be careful about the creatures sources of damages and resistances/protections. Especially mind the difference between creature being protected from a single attack from a source and being immune to it completely

As other anon said, werewolves are potentially OP because they're immune to weapon source, which means you can clear certain teams of monsters without taking a single hit. I wouldn't say they should be in your primary team in small maps, but they sure are useful to quickly level up your shit. They're also expensive, 1000 gold each which is kind of plenty in this game.

Fortifications wouldn't be so bad if they weren't an entirely passive timegate; You never invade before 0 anyways.

They should represent the planet's anti-drop defenses. Make the orbiting fleet and the fortifications affect the drop stage of gameplay, doing significant damage to armies in the air and on the ground before the slower, steadier meat-grinder of ground combat.

You could even make this more exciting by changing offense and defense armies to mechanized and marine armies: Marine armies hit hard during the drop, but are less effective at the grind. Mechanized are the opposite, with the staying power to contest the planet until victory. Suddenly we're starting to see gameplay decisions again: Blitz with a strong navy and marine army to end the ground war quickly with air superiority and lighting strikes (High pop damage, ruined buildings, ETC), or blockade and wear down the fortifications from high orbit and send the troops in to take ground slow and steady. (Low chance of damaging the planet, better chance of breaking morale and forcing a surrender)

Sins has the most complete mods IMO.
I'll concede that it's probably a result of how simple Sins inherently is. But if you have a favorite sci-fi show that doesn't have its own decent space-game, then it's a good bet that there's one for Sin Rebellion.

Did they increase their range of action in subsequent patches to something thats acceptable? Or is a mod needed to make them viable?

Please respond
>>
>>162692634
There is absolutely no reason what-so-ever not to fuck artillery into every single possible slot on your battleships.

Here's how wars play out.
Everyone has all their nice corvettes, destroyers, cruisers and battleships.

The corvettes and destroyers on both sides wipe each-other out.
The cruisers on both sides get devoured by the artillery of the battleships.
After that first battle in the war it will just be battleship slugfests.

Every war in stellaris once battleships are common always comes down to which side can out-artillery the other.
>>
>>162694343

And when one side wins the slugfest it runs around destroying all the spaceports of the loser to ensure it will never be able to rebuild its navy so essentially the the empirebuilding ca,e down to a single battl.e
>>
>>162692634
bombers and fighters are much better than what they were, they still are hardly optimal though. Kinetic artillery + plasma + PD is the new meta
>>
>>162692634
>>162694343
Actually there is one exception and it's the unbidden.
In that scenario you swap out your Giga Cannons for Arc Emitters or Tachyon Lances depending on your preference and swap out your Kinetic Artillery for Matter Disintegrators
>>
>>162694562
So squeze as much demands into the first war as you can to make sure they're still crippled when the armistice lifts and it's time for Battleships 2: Dawn of Shelling.

>And when one side wins the slugfest it runs around destroying all the spaceports of the loser to ensure it will never be able to rebuild its navy so essentially the the empirebuilding ca,e down to a single battl.e

In all fairness, human history is filled with wars where one country gets inevitably BTFO in one big battle, resulting in either land being ceded and everyone going home, or the victors basically raping and pillaging everything within a 100 mile radius.

but yeah this is a real problem in stellaris, I think part of it comes down to the lack of need for security

You can focus your ENTIRE navy into one or two massive fleets and fuck everything else off, you don't need navy patrols to fend off pirates or hostile aliens, you don't need empire security really, just ships for foreign wars.

If there was more incentive to spread your navy throughout your empire to respond to internal threats, if you actually had shit to pay attention to whatsoever, maybe midgame would be more interesting, maybe wars would be less about OHKOing people immediately, because you'd actually need to combine and mobilize your navy that would be a little more spread out in order to control your empire space.

This might even give a little bit of an advantage to underdogs or smaller empires, because they may be smaller distance-wise, meaning they can secure their space with a smaller navy and bring more of it to bear more quickly.

I beleive they'll probably address this when they actually add civil wars and factions and politics, the kind of shit I think people figured would be in the game on release. Actually competent, persistent piracy combined with trading route mechanics would add a lot of actually interesting micro to the game, instead of the game being focused on clicking 'upgrade building' increasingly through the mid game.

It's true.

It seems to often be a consequence of unavoidable abstraction.

While in real situations, numbers have a MASSIVE influence on the outcome of wars, again and again throughout history we DO see equally matched forces with the outnumbered side coming out the other side victorious. To the point where it occurs too often to simply ignore because it's a pretty big part of how societies fight each other.

However there's two ends of the spectrum it seems for extreme abstraction. Either you have Civ V style or Civ IV and before style. You have unlimited stacking which smashes units against each other with only a minimal attention to positioning and superior usage, and Civ V where there's no stacking, and you can swap units out as a mechanic, but makes it extremely hard to bring superior numbers to bear in some situations AND the AI simply can't use it.

It's a bit different in stellaris where you have fleets going up against fleets on a 2d board with different boards, but because of the nature of retreating specifically discouraging hit and run operations (presumably because the AI would be too stupid to adapt to this) and the ability to bring basically every ship you own to bear on a single big fight at the start of a war without any negative effects to the rest of your empire makes wars pretty predictable.

the problem is generally that anything that might balance doomstacks to be a little bit more interesting, usually cripples AI players. Making a strategy game that only works against scripted AI or players isn't an option, so making a lame compromise inbetween becomes the outcome.

Time for everyone´s favourite robotic death machines
>>
>>162746443
I read "robotnik's death machines" and was confused for a moment.
>>
>>162740396

Its not even just the doomstacking, but how once its gone the game is over for the loser, cause it would take decades of gathering resources even just to rebuild its fleet and its stations while the winner gathers more resources and builds up an even bigger fleet. Also, even if you smash the defenders the war doesnt get any more fun. It will be still a tedious waste of time bombarding and invading planets one at a time.

>>162741603

Except Civ 4 had collateral so human players had very good reasons to split stacks to avoid it. Forking and multi-pronged attacks were also common and smashing stacks into eachother on the field was very rare.
>>
>>162742626

This. The ethics would be such a nice way to go about it but its fucking nothing. You either have federation builders or assholes. Personalities worked out so well for civ games.

MoO3 was... something. I played it before 2 and 1 so I personally didn't find it as bad as old school fans. and the whole ship designing aspect and a few other little things were in my opinion, better in 3 than the older games. But yeah it's still a mess of menus with very little transparency and automation so poorly coded and implemented that it actually increases the need for micro instead of removing it, some hideous bloat on turn times rendering any turn past 150~ an eternity to process even on modern high end PCs and some truly infuriating mechanics that never should've happened.

Take the galactic senate thing, everyone bar the Ithkul (parasitic bioweapon aliens that everyone hates, including other Ithkul) can start as a member and if you do you get automatic diplomatic contacts with everyone else in it. Including the super race who founded it. This does have some perks, you can throw suicide science spies at them to get some ridiculous tech advantages super early on, I remember stealing their best weapons tech some 30turns into the game once and just shitstomping entire fleets with a single ship. But on the flip side EVERYONE HAS CONTACT WITH YOU AND IT'S A GANG UP ON THE HUMAN AI. So expect to get bombarded with spies from everyone including the super race with a massive tech lead going absolutely apeshit on sabotaging you.

Overall it's sorta alright if you don't look at it too hard, except it came out after one of the most beloved sci-fi 4x games ever made which makes it a complete turd in comparison. Honestly if it'd been given another 6 months dev time and they hadn't fired one of the lead devs half way through production it'd have ended up being an exceptional game, the potential is there just very, VERY unpolished

I wonder if games like Stellaris could benefit more from very fast ship construction, but limited by time, population, economy etc.

You research technologies to make units available and you raise forces from your population. Sure you'd still need serious mineral investments but maybe 'trained crew' could be a limiter on your ability to field vessels, but production time could be vastly reduced.

An ability to go into 'debt' in materials could remove a lot of powerlessness from Stellaris in terms of production. If you could put the country into a war economy, seize private assets and seize the means of mineral production in exchange for a massive short term economic boost, that could be a method to buff smaller empires when fighting against big scary opposing empires, the downside being big economic problems somewhere down the line, unhappy pops, poorer ship/army quality etc.

It would also allow empires to not fall apart after a single battle, able to quickly raise forces after losing ships.
>>
>>162747440
I could see that working, could tie it into the militarist/collectivist ethos too so those ethos' get less of a hit for doing it since either everyone see's the need for it or the corps are heavily ingrained in the governmental military system anyway that it's just part of life there.

The way I see it, wars in Stellaris very quickly become one sided, even between relatively evenly matched empires.
Wars in some other 4x games and real life in particular often end up being gruelling struggles, if you don't finish the job extremely quickly with unimaginable firepower.

In Stellaris you never particularly need to put your empire under stress or pressure or take drastic ethic-effecting actions in your empire to win. When you fight a war in Stellaris, the only REAL consideration is 'wew i hope I don't have to go to war with another empire because my fleets are over there'.

If you actually had to grind empires down, but then once they were ground down the war ended fairly quickly, that'd be far superior to the current model, which is.

a) one empire eventually BTFOs another empire
b) spend another 5-10 years arbitrarily fucking around bombing/occupying a certain number of enemy planets in order to fill your warscore quota

your pops can't give up or turn on you, you can't reduce the morale of their people (or vaporize them into nuclear shadows, it's just a very bland boring conflict that barely feels like a struggle.

At least games like total war or Civ can give the feeling of a long exhausting struggle, where you're glad for the war to end by it's conclusion, because you can lose many battles and win many battles and still come out on top by playing the long game. Stellaris has no long game, just warscore and doomstacks.
>>
>>162747303
May try it someday, beacuse just judging by pictures it looks like it has an immense ammount of depth and the UI is still better than auroras
>>
>>162749450
The depth is deceptive, like a body of water that looks deep but actually only comes up to your ankles, and about half of the UI elements don't actually do anything meaningful enough that you ever have to touch them.
>>
I want to tech jump with the Spanish in order to conquer everyone else and convert them to my religion, what would be the best approach?
>>
>>162748451
I just started a new campaign, and it's still so fucking boring. Immediately rushed a huge navy because I was throwing down mines everywhere, and by mid-game, I've got two 7K navies - every other empire besides the stagnant are labelled inferior.
Went to war with a 3 empire defensive alliance. Destroyed one guy, then started on another to fulfill war score.

After the peace treaty ended, Declared war on the now 2 empire defensive alliance, working on the last guy, and the AI had literally built no ships since the last war, and got rekt.

You're right that the wars are pretty boring and lack depth, but it wouldn't be so bad if the AI wasn't so complacent and retarded, then again I was playing on normal settings. I imagine if I bump up the difficulty, they get handicaps to make them harder, but that's just a shitty way to compensate for mouthbreathing AI.

I'm at the point where I can have both my fleets out of port and still producing tons of energy. There's literally nothing to do now other than squash other Empires, change tech because it takes fucking aeons to research in mid-game for some reason, and replace dead govorners. Also, when the dead govorner mail comes up, why does it bring me to a fucking overview of the planet/system he was at? Why not bring up the planet tab so I don't need to navigate 3 menus and click about 15 times to replace him? Why can't it automatically bring me to the leader hiring page? Why does auto-explore need to be researched? I already shift queue 3-4 systems at a time. The whole 'it keeps you busy giving it orders and controlling it" argument is garbage. Fuck this game is still shit.

So with MoO being mentioned earlier and not having played this game since early access I decided to fire the remake up.

What race should I pick /4xg/? If you don't know shit about the races here's the summary

Alkari:
Excellent spacecraft, a tech boost on their homeworld and a higher max population for their homeworld
Bulrathi:
Big minerals, big homeworld, big soldiers
Darlok:
Best spies in the game hands down and sneaky ships
Human:
Diplomatic space jews, shit espionage defense.
Klackon:
Grow fast, high production live underground and are functionally retarded
Meklar:
High production and self repairing ships but shit food, they only need half the food other races do though since they're cybernetic.
Mrrshan:
Excellent and fast production of soldiers and good diplomacy, also furfag warmongering assholes
Psilons:
Greys. Best tech in the game by far with a small homeworld and terrible espionage security
Sakkra:
Zerg rush dinosaur faction, high growth, shit tech and shit diplomacy
Silicoid:
Rock men, Shit growth but don't need food at all, don't care about gravity in the slightest and everyone hates them for being weird
Terran:
Asshole versions of humanity, heavy war focus
Elerian:
Mind controlling war race, good combat buffs and can instantly cap planets without having to invade them
Gnolam:
Literal space jews with super luck so bad shit random events tend to avoid them
Trilarian:
Speedy fish people

Forgot pic

Because only civ babbies post here, once in a while, and they scare all the "regular" posters that we have. That's it we don't talk about city-building and RTS despite agreeing they are on-topic.

What do you think of Seven Kingdoms 2 so far?
>>
>>162759437
because its not really a general where people are constantly posting things. what are they gonna do, blog about what happened in 20 turns? civ isn't a super exciting game to talk about, same with most other turn based games. It would be faster if more people talked about rts and shit, but people are afraid for no real reason.

I don't actually know, lore-wise they're regular humans that were uplifted to be a soldier slave race then abandoned on an alien world when they were done, the alien world being somewhat more hostile than earth might have something to do with it. It's mostly just an aesthetic design choice to make them look more aggressive than regular humans though, it also gives them a slightly distorted robotic sounding voice.

Dude, the Huns are a Civilization, you can't trust them.

That reminds me of my pre-last Civ V game
>Be based Montezuma
>Huns keep asking me to join their war against Russia
>I refuse because I don't feel like attacking so early
>They continue their war for 100 fucking turns
>Russia settles 3 tiles away from where I wanted to
>Join forces with Attila, capture and burn down the new city
>Atila is pissed because I had a city near him and got troops near his borders
>Capture Attila's capital and second city
>Leave him in the middle of my territory and Russia's with half of his tiles in snow
That's why you shouldn't piss Monte fucking Zuma.

Oh, from same game.
>Declare war on Arabia because they got a lot of money and delegates
>Manage to capture one of his cities
>Realize Arabs are 2 eras ahead of everyone else
>Chicken out and stop the war
>The fucker keeps telling me I'm a warmonger
>Pay Washington to declare war on him
>Washington declares war on me because I left the Arab city I captured unprotected
>Ask Arabia for money in exchange of declaring war against Washington
>Anal rape Washington
Don't backstab Monte fucking Zuma!

>Discover the atom bomb
>Nuke fucking Arabia
Don't trust Monte fucking Zuma!
