If this is Hotel/Khan, just want to let you know that I found out from an EU friend that you don't have to re-download two game clients for different regions to get clans working, you just have to modify the engine_config.xml within the \World_of_Warships\res\ directory. Changing the currentRealm value with the specific two letter server code allows you to use the clan functions for that server; the rest is managed by Im_The_Seeker's region switcher mod (which is essentially just a scripts_config.xml tweak).

Two letter codes:
na = NA server
eu = EU server
sg = SEA server (internally known as "Singapore")
ru = Russian server

Newfag here, question for ya. What's the fucking secret to using AP ammunition. I'll get fucked by it all the time but when I try to use it it seems to do little or even no damage at all despite the game registering it as a hit. Occasionally I can chunk someone for 2000-3000 damage but those seem rather few and far between.

Ship I'm using is the Phoenix, if that's related. I'm only asking because I was doing great playing the St. Louis but now it seems I can hardly last 5 minutes into a match before getting my shit pushed in by an AP salvo wiping out half my health in one go.

Shoot broadsides. Works better in BBs or CAs. You're in a CL, so you need to wiggle your ass and dodge shots rather than rely on armor. The USN line turns into CAs at tier 7 and the IJN line at tier 5

In cruisers, especially low tier cruisers, AP is largely for punishing other cruisers that go broadside to you at close (maybe <8km?) range. You can attempt to pen the unarmored parts of larger ships, namely the bow, stern, and superstructure, but don't expect too much against angled targets or the thicker belt armor of battleships. Basically, fire HE at angled targets and destroyers and AP against flat broadsides if you think you can pen.
The St. Louis and Phoenix are very different ships, and it's comparatively difficult to citpen a St. Louis with dinky T3 cruiser guns. Try not to show your broadside to anything if you can help it, but especially not enemy battleships. They are your natural predator, and they will absolutely devastate you if you give them even the slightest chance. Maneuver a lot to make their life that much harder, and utilize island cover to avoid exposing yourself to unnecessary danger.
Sorry if some of this is inaccurate, I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm too off base. Giving advice isn't really my forte, but being primarily a cruiser captain, I know the struggle all too well.

I'm not a Hotelfag because I think she's the best bote or she had the best record or anything like that, of course she was a mistake and literally worse than useless for the IJN. Although Japan would have lost equally hard because they had much worse problems than just the Yamatos.
She's my favorite bote because I find her to be a beautiful looking design, I find her history and part within the IJN and her story really interesting because of the story it tells of the IJN and wider Imperial Japan at the time which appeals to me as some of my biggest interests as a historyfag.

Indianapolis is a less garbage version of the Pensacola. Trades one gun for radar, better armor, better gun layout, and most importantly better concealment. Pretty mediocre overall though, and not really worth it unless you like Pensacola or specifically want a USN CA captain trainer.

Leningrad is a Kiev with worse guns (5 vs 6, Lenin's guns also take longer to rotate). However it's even faster, harder to detect, and carries very good torpedoes for its tier. Decent captain trainer, pretty fun to play, decently competitive. Also on the cheap side for a T7 ship.

What to do? This ship is worthless. It's constantly vs. tier 10 and takes 10000 hp hits from 20 km. It has 16.3 km firing range which is knife-fight distance vs tier 8 and higher battleships and you may take multiple cit-hits on that distance. Battleships now have insane fire resistance and don't light on fire with HE spam.
9 km radar is joke vs. destroyers since you face 10-15 torpedo walls, you spot at 2.5 km, if you go that close.

AFT is practically mandatory on IJN DDs. It gives them very good stealth fire windows. SE is really only a must have on USN DDs that get up really close to fight.

Barely useful. The steering mod will let you dodge incoming fire better, the propulsion mod will make you accelerate from zero slightly faster. Unless you're doing a lot of completely stopping your engines, it's not worth it. I did take propulsion on Hatsuharu though since its turn time is naturally about 2 seconds. You could do the same for Mutsuki and Fubuki.

In my opinion you're better off just accepting you're going to get detonated and picking up those signals for use in Ranked or high tier, where detonations are costly. Her actual use was a similar story, you can follow the worries that the IJN had with their oil supplies and their fear of 'wasting' her before the battle they were looking for, which is why they refused to sent her to battles such as the Solomon campaign which ended up being decisive.
In the end she was a gamble like Japan's entire strategy, designed around a single purpose with the hopes that it would be enough to beat a foe that was vastly superior, and like that strategy she turned out to be obsolete from the start. Her place as a sort of embodiment of the nation is pretty fitting, especially when you consider her end, a pointless campaign that brought nothing but her own destruction.

It's not so bad once you learn a bit about where to position your planes to drag his fighters out of position and create an opening. You will always have more squads, so you are much more tactically flexible. The key thing to remember about going up against an AS CV is that if you do more damage than he did, you win.
