A good many of them weren't hitbox issues though.

For example, there used to be complaints about Nagato getting citadelled really easily from the front. Supposedly there was a portion of the citadel sticking out of the armor model, based off of information from that website.

Then it turned out they just got one of the armor thicknesses wrong and the citadel hitbox itself was modelled perfectly fine to begin with, completely inside the hull. They changed the one thickness and suddenly all the problems went away.

I've got main gun range on there now just because I had one already when I bought the ship and I don't have the range upgrade, but it seems like it'd be unnecessary to have later on. I love torping and Fletcher has the best torps in the game, so I took the Torp Tubes upgrade. I even took TAE before CE. Fletcher is a lot of fun with 80 s torp reload. I very rarely engage other DDs on equal terms, so I don't feel like I need the Main Battery upgrade to keep up with other DDs. I would recommend the Torp Tubes upgrade generally, but Main Battery certainly isn't wrong, if you prefer to deal damage with guns and fires rather than torps.

What on Earth put that idea in your mind? Are you the 'Fletcher range module' shitposter?

To answer your question, the choice of L4 skill for IJN DDs looks very tricky to me. AFT is naturally mandatory for Akizuki, but it is also worthwhile for Kagero and Yugumo, which are the only DDs above low tiers to have both a decent stealth advantage over gunbotes and somewhat usable guns themselves.

The problem with AFT is that at T6 and T7 stealth is poor. This is doubly problematic as it means that the extended range does not unlock much stealth-fire utility and you will often be unable to avoid engaging gunbotes at their preferred range. Ultimately that means you will be taking more damage, so SE starts to increase in value.

There's no point in taking DE unless you're using your guns for prolonged periods of time. The only viable way to do that in any of these ships is to take AFT. Due to that prerequisite, DE competes with CE. Akizuki is the only ship who gains enough from DE to give it comparable utility to CE.

There were seveal cases of oversized rudder hitboxes in the early beta (which made the rudder break from every HE impact within a ship's length), two cases where a bit of the engine room hitbox was sticking out over the deck (which made the engine break from every HE shell within a hundred meters), and two cases where the magazine hitbox extended forward of the fore armored bulkhead.

The latter one took them over a month to fix, but it was pretty hilarious. It caused all Nagatos and North Carolinas to simply explode when they took a high damage torp on the nose.
The bug was almost meaningless in a gunfight because the part of the hitbox that stuck out was underwater, and AP can't get there because it mostly glances off the bow.
The hitbox was still within the hull, though.

I doubt that the gamemodels display is accurate, even WG would notice such fuckhuge parts sticking out.

Well the Iowa's were shitty boats. If we were to compare the Fast BB generation of American boats to the Standard types, the NC's would be the Nevada class (introduced new ideas that would be incorporated into all subsequent BB's of its generation), SD's would be Penssilvanya class (refinement of ideas and made more utilitarian) the Iowa's would be the NM class, (a largely flawed boat design when compared to at the time newest BB's coming off other country's lines as it added little to nothing in the way of advances from the previous ships). They possessed very little more armor compared to the NC and SD's, and a slight advantage in speed.

Same place as an Iowa? From the area under the front turret (where the hull curves out) to no further than the rear FCS (I never seem to get citadels any further back than that).

If facing the front, aim at the same curved area on the cheeks. At any angle over 35 degrees its a more or less guaranteed citadel.
