when aa was changed to a f2p/sub game, they wanted to balance out people having infinite time without just making it a godawful slog(it's still a slog, but)
that said, mostly what it did was make nobody ever log off for the first couple of weeks, leading to every server being full all the time but everyone in those servers being afk

As someone who used to play AA all the way back before it released, let me say a few things.

The game is undeniably fun, or at least it was. Combat just flows in a way most MMOs fail to accomplish, the world is colorful enough and there are plenty of systems to engage the audience.

However, the game is ruined by one thing: sheer greed of the publishers. Considering publishers have not changed, Archeage is not worth the play.
