Either way, consider farming superior crystals and elite boss drops, as they're worth quite a bit of money and will give you a good boost to get going.

I would recommend Demon Avenger if the first applies, and Phantom if the second does, though others might know better of what "fun" means than I do as I main a generally un-fun class.
Maybe Kinesis might be fun, too, but definitely avoid explorer warriors and shade.

Everything based on level range has different restrictions
Elites are 19 above/below, though it seems they may have been changed to 10 or something with V patch
Runes can only be used within 10 levels of the average level of mobs on a map (or something along those lines)
Events usually allow mobs above lv150 to count all the way up to lv250
Pollo/fritto portals only spawn within 10 levels, your friends are probably misremembering or talking out their ass, a portal will usually spawn well before 1k mobs killed if you're actually in level range
