I've rerolled like the autistic fuck that i am over and over hoping to get at least one continent map that doesn't run from north ice to south ice or just leaves one tile of water.

it's so frustrating they add stupid shit like 6 sided snowflakes, but cant make a non-fucktard looking continent map that doesnt look like this

2 sites/shrines and maybe 1 holy site project is usually enough.
divine spark is a nice boost too.
though i usually only play small size continents with 4 religions. im starting to try standard size today.

what really most effects whether you get a religion is the other AIs. the game has a way of pushing you toward a particular strat and sometimes it gives you a religion easy. sometimes it makes it near impossible. like when you start coastal and saladin is there. sometimes it spoonfeed you late stonehenge when nobody wants it. you have to develop a sense of what strategy it is herding you toward.

They're all Neptunia girls.
Uni's Gun Runners, a military dictatorship with small xenophile tendencies.
Their motto is "join the army, meet interesting people, learn to kill them".

The Lowee Alignement, a religious xenophile theocracy.
Their motto is "let's all praise our Fair Lady".

The Pan Neptune, a scientist republic who breeds quickly and spread everywhere.
Their motto is "I turned my passion into a job".

Leanbox's Gold Diggers, a capitalistic theocracy who's all about production but is bad at research.
Their motto is "once you paid for the console, you can paid for the services".

Lastation, a fanatic xenophobic pacifist republic.
Their motto is "GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE".

Ok. I've tried googling, but I just get shit for Civ5. I'm trying to install mods for Civ4:BtS such as Fall from Heaven and Rise from Erebus and whatnot. But they're not showing up in my launcher and the launcher that installs with the mods doesn't work at all. I've tried installing the mods into BOTH mod directories, but it still doesn't work. What do I do to install mods?

And it's just these two mods. Master of Mana works just fine.

It's the least tedious, because you can use the combat system which requires some tactical thinking, which admittedly isn't much because of bad AI and bad general design, but is still head and shoulders over what you do for the other victory types.

Depends on what sort of gameplay do you want to have.

Stellar Expansion and it's addons are practically compatible with anything, since it doesn't modify any vanilla files, though the geoforming and terraforming might have huge game-changing implications. I use them to spice my Alphamod games.

Stellaris+ adds a lot of new buildings and techs while keeping everything relatively close to vanilla compared to Alphamod. Don't use Stellaris+ [Buildings & Resources Module] with Alphamod, though, or you will have compatibility/balance issues.

Anything that adds more events is good, and I have made sure to install the proper compatibility patches for Alphamod and other mods I like that would otherwise would be incompatible. My version of Ringworld Restoration is an Alphamod compatible version that is not found in the Workshop, for example.
Ethic & Government Rebuilt is great for RP purposes, and since recently there's a Alphamod version too. Spectra Flag Colors is compatible with E&GR, unlike other flag colors mods.

Fox Leader, Researcher Traits Fix and Extended Traits are pretty good on their own, as well.

Music mods help make the game less repetitive more than you would think, and the Tiny UI mods help ease

I am unsure of the quality of AutoBuild concerning making the AI less retarded, but some of it's features are useful.
Harder Invaders allows you to set multiple crisis, Unending Reinforcements, plus other options.
Improved Pops also adds cool features.
All three of these can have all of their features disables and enabled individually in-game.

What if Civ had infinite stacking of units on a tile, but a supply limit meant they took damage if you had more units than the supply limit of that tile on that tile

Also love the genetic engineering. Basically anything that promotes individualism and freedom to succeed they're ok with.

Most of them only add new techs and buildings that give new bonuses to production or other things. I'd use those regardless of what other mods I'm using. The other ones change a bit more the gameplay mechanics.

Voidcraft is good if you're not playing with any other mod that adds new ship types, since it might make things too complicated/redundant if you do use them both at the same time.

I am not sure how the Geoengineering mod would play out with mods that allow you to colonize asteroids or gas giants. I'm unsure of the fairness of the Terraforming mods, since I've never seen the AI terraform worlds, so it might give the player an advantage over the AI.
>>
>>160897654
If you are individualist that means you are locked out of despotic hegemony so pick scientific directorate or w/e the materialist oligarchy government is called. The extra research alternative is pretty good, higher chance at rare/dangerous techs and it makes it easier to get to what you want faster than other empires.
>>
>>160898660
If you had certain mods installed when you made it like a namelist or something it won't appear unless you activate that mod
>>
>>160899632
Shit
99% of my mods have an alert for being out of date on them.
>>
>>160899701
That usually doesn't matter. Mods get labeled out of date if their description file hasn't had one line of text edited to the newest update number. So mods like namelists and emblems and colors and surface stuff still work fine when activated because nothing in the new patch effected the same thing they did.

Send delegations the first turn you meet a civ
Giving 100 gold as a gift gives you +10 diplomacy for favorable trades
Trade route to a civ gives +2
Open borders to a civ is +3

Getting an alliance with a civ gives you +17 FOREVER, even if you aren't allied with them anymore

Brazil/China/Aztec are lost causes if you don't befriend them in the early game.

It actually isn't. I'm not him but flanking comes from the idea that your force is most effective when facing the enemy, which remains true for spessships, that space to manuever is crucial, which remains true in space, that it's confusing to deal with two weaker groups to your front and left than just strong in front (true in space, turning the main gun alone takes time and switching between two targets / dodging shit from two directions is harder than just one), that tunnel vision exists, and that morale drops from getting surrounded in general (human nature even in planes / tanks, it makes the enemy look more numerous and powerful).
>>
>>160919609
Why? You think a ship would have its weapons concentrated at a specific part of the ship, unless they were easily movable I guess, even then you'd would want to position your ships so that they would have the least amount of their ship facing the enemy. You also have to consider potential formation and the element of surprise, assuming that surprise is even possible.
>>
>>160919964
Because pretty much every possible angle in space is a flank if your ship only has weapons in one place (say the front for example). This would be the first thing to concider when you're building a military spaceship.
>>

>Maybe something like the Suprmacy/Purity/whatever thing Civ BE had.
Yeah, the game needs at least "something" to make one playthrough feel different from the next. Either make the ethics way more distinct, or do a BE style thing where mutually exclusive tech branches cause empires to diverge as time advances.
>>
>>160919964
Because large weapons are inherently fixed onto the ship with low mobility, thus you can't get hit with the asteroid mass driver if you're behind the battleship even if the lasers and smaller drivers can hit you. You're essentially saying tanks can't be flanked.
>>
>>160920475
>Spiritualists get access to unique "Missionary" ships
>Can send them to neighboring empires and passively cause ethic divergence (Changing pops to spiritualists

Something like that would be cool, obviously each ethic would get its own unique unit/ability.

This also helps with the fact that there aren't enough ways to fuck with your neighbors without directly going to war.

the amount of work really needed for the AI is gonna take months and years at firaxis pace. and it will probably never be the game it can be due to the AI. if the AI trumped Civ 5 that would be a momumental achievement for them based on expectations at this point. BERT was a complete joke.

the AI is mostly competitive up to the mid-game barring a few glitches like the retarded teddy playing 1CC with himself. but most games are decided by the end of renaissance. the AI never prioritizes production, doesnt improve their tiles, can never replace their army once its killed, still doesnt upgrade enough, and loses almost all interest in expanding after the initial land-grab. it still never builds planes. it simply doesnt know how to acquire good cities with production and build mines. it usually takes garbage cities and leaves tons of good space unclaimed. otherwise it builds a big empire but the moment you DoW it has barely any units and you walk over them.

entirely depends on what to expect from reaslistic space combat

ultimately, flanking absolutely would be a significant advantage if any of the guns, sensors, optics, shielding or weapons on a spacecraft had any blind spots or directional effectiveness

keeping purely in current/near future technology, angled armor would be important then just as much as it is in contemporary combat, so flanking absolutely would give you a benefit.

Oh and guess which major ES1 faction got turned into a minor? Hint: it's your favourite.

New major faction: The United Empire, which features economics-focused gameplay based on the generation and use of Influence.
Three new minor factions: The Pilgrims & Amoeba factions from Endless Space, and the new Z’vali faction have been added.
New Minor faction quests: you can now assimilate minor factions through various special quests.
Addition of the Marketplace: you will be able to acquire resources and heroes in exchange for Dust.
Era 4 of the Tech Tree has been added, offering for more research paths, unlocks and buildings.
Deeds: you will receive special rewards for performing specific actions.

>I've never actually heard anything bad about Endless Space.
Everyone except me hates the combat of ES1.

ES2 is so barebones right now I feel that the 2 hours I played it was a complete waste of time. It might become a better game than ES1 if they fix the combat, currently it's even worse than the original and I hate it with the fury of a thousand suns.
>>
>>160936496
>Everyone except me hates the combat of ES1.
Honestly, after playing EL, ES1's combat isn't that bad.
It's just that the AI cheats so much, it's disheartening. It's very easy to win a battle but lose the war because you're so outnumbered.
>>
>>160936272

it's not unpopular as much as it just isn't that relevant

I quite like Endless Space for it's style, theme, music etc. The combat is a little bit too simplistic while being just a little bit complex to be slick and fast. The graphics are stylish but very minimal.

Plus, Endless Space 1 very much turned boring early on because there's not much difference between different civs, and there's no interior stuff to manage outside of planet 'exploitation' (FIDS) and the population grown speed.
There's no espionage, politicking or subversion in the gameplay, it's just straight up economic, tech or conquest.

Endless Legend was quite a bit better in this regard with some very novel gameplay concepts, but it ends up feeling a little clunky over all.

In both games they've genuinley tried to do new things with the combat mechanics and the whole 'questing' mechanics, as well as factions like the Cultists, or the idea of Minor Factions, which I think are a fantastic alternative to the barbarians or pirates from Civ or Endless Space.

In Endless Space 2 they're bringing in interior empire politics, demographics, minor civilizations and factions, actual complex government systems, as well as a range of improvements to the inter-empire politics.

Endless Space 2 SEEMS to be bringing a lot of things i hoped that Stellaris would bring, so I have high hopes. It's yet to be seen if they'll pull it off, it looks great right now though.

Not necessarily. If you're engaging ship a directly off your bow, and then ship b comes up 90 degrees in a different direction (whether above below right of you or left of you, or behind you) then you're flanked. Unless you have the capability to engage both targets equally of course (equal armories, 360 degree weapon coverage etc) in which case you're correct you wouldn't be able to be flanked

The best ones are generally production from followers (if you aren't playing Russia), housing (if you are playing Russia or planning to build holy districts in every city for whatever reason anyway) then gold from followers/cities, then whatever. The problem with Religion is ridiculous amount of hammers you have to spend building the district and the buildings inside it for meagre bonuses while you could have gotten the same or better effect from just making builders or different districts.
Russia and Arabs are the only ones who should even bother with Religion in my opinion.

Doomstacks are a really big problem that demands some kind of solution. The issue is that in this case the solution introduces other problems of its own, some of which cannot be solved without some very powerful AI.

Probably the ideal is to have stacks ala Civ 1-4, but with splash damage and zone of control to encourage players to split things up.

Or just have a proper tactical game like Advance Wars.

im not conspiracytarded enough to think they release unfinished games on purpose.
i think they release unfinished games just because they are incredibly cheap.
being cheap as a games studio i think manifests itself the most in this case in
-hard deadlines. its not 'done when its done,' its done when the deadline arrives, period
-lack of post-release support. support being characterized in updates or content that is not sold. work-hours that might otherwise go to support instead just get rolled into a new expansion project or a new game project

if you want to give them the absolute most possible compassionate benefit of the doubt you could speculate that the reason they are cheap is because
-the publisher that bought them out is incredibly cheap and too bottom-line obsessed and executive-driven rather than being passionate about quality or good games
-these games are mostly single player and notoriously easy to pirate resulting in lost revenue
-they spend too much work-hours on art and graphics for a game that is a glorified spreadsheet

>poor sales, bankruptcy
>industry collapses as publishers realize that making a good game is too expensive
>4x survives only as a fringe genre like grand strategy

You don't get well-done games no matter how you behave, unless you happen to be a rich developer on your own.
>>
>>160946351
Well yes.
Add splash damage that decimate or even destroy other units on the tile and supply limits range for units and you will have a much more better game.
Or make units on map consist from many single units. Like civilizations buy generals or military leaders and then fill him with units either bought by gold(mercenaries) or conscripted(militias, feudal units, reservists) or garrisoned professional standing units from civ pools that you can train and fill cities or tile improvements like forts, castles or strongholds.
Or make maps much bigger with cities controlling whole provinces like in EL so units have more space to maneuver.

Its that because games are not done by single or small team but by big corporations and money are literally wasted and process is supervised by people who have little idea what they are doing.
Also they are obsessed with making profits so as you told they try to cut cost everywhere where it not affect them and this lead to shitty production.
Plus nepotism and current wave of political correctness.

The root problem is money. If people bought Civ the way they bought Call of Duty, you could get a fully-functioning game for $75 (with preorder BS to bilk the kids and retards out of a little extra), and the only thing we'd be bitching about is how this year's release is too similar to last year's.

Well, Firaxis couldn't make a Civilopedia for Civ 6 that is as good as the one for Civ 4, so clearly something has gone wrong. You need money to make a game of this level, in addition to something that Firaxis no longer has.

>political correctness
This bothers me, and I'm not the only one. The main problem people are having with the religion system is that you can't do anything about enemy religions coming into your territory. This despite the fact that killing heretics was routine throughout most of the relevant history.

We can't even give Firaxis the excuse that they're walking on eggshells culturally, because Paradox puts all of this plus explicit references to real-world figures in their games.

What can I do about the missionaries and apostles hanging around my city? I don't mean sending out some priest to argue theology with them. My army should be able to burn these people at the stake.

It's not like this would be hard to code, either. Apostles are presumed to not have any real military capability, so any unit with military power should be able to kill them. It's like capturing a settler.

Later on it makes sense to get civics that provide some benefit to having religious liberty, so that killing enemy missionaries is disallowed (either explicitly or at the cost of making your people or other civs mad). But if you look at any history whatsoever, this nonsense of missionaries running around freely is illegal.

Why are we not going to Alpha Centauri? Yes, I am extremely butthurt about the degradation of this victory type, including the fact that there was a spaceship designer in Civ 1.

Alpha Centauri is a genuine victory. Even if Earth falls to the Mongol hordes, the stars will be full of glorious English civilization, and even if that civilization splinters because of some spinoff game plot they are still, in the end, descendants of a truly victorious civilization.

Going to Mars is nothing but prestige and science unless you're actually colonizing it, and a colony that depends on its homeland is just an expensive continuing project that will cease to exist as soon as Gandhi pushes the button.

I blame the hipsters at Firaxis. They hate science (hence why the programming is so shit), so they want you to hate it too. Instead of making science victory the greatest possible achievement of a civilization, they make you divert your entire society's resources, forgoing actual prosperity and culture, to send your best and brightest to a dead rock to get cancer playing golf. The stupid, useless people back home end up denying that it even happened, thanks to their lack of culture. Your civilization gets nothing other than a participation trophy that somehow counts as 'victory' despite not benefiting you at all.

There is no such thing as a civilization "victory" in real life. At no point in the near or distant future will a head of state receive a card telling him he has won at empire building, no matter what he accomplishes in military or civilian achievement.

The devs probably figured Beyond Earth left such a sour taste in everyone's mouth (which it did) that they'd rather avoid science fiction. Going to Mars is at least a realistic task to put at the end of the rather conservative tech tree that caps off with robots and fusion, things we have right now. Alpha Centauri will not be feasible for hundreds of years.

simplified and exaggerated but those are some of the main virtues of bushido

True but misleading, this is only an accomplishment because it allowed them to work with lower-quality iron ores
>Some also carried bow or spear, and later, firearms
True

My favorite way to play the game at the moment is with a focus on religion.

Not through religious victory, because that sucks, but by using faith as a second and more powerful currency than gold.

I played a multiplayer game earlier today against some friends, one guy is playing spain, declares war on me because my military strength is only 200.
Unfortunately for him, I had 4000 faith.
First I bought horsemen in every single city and encampment I had for three turns straight. Then I completed the cavalry tech that unlocked cossacks, upgraded all my horsemen and crushed his army in two turns.
Then I proceeded to run over his entire empire, and everyone else conceded when they saw that my military strength had gone from 200 to almost 3000 in under 10 turns.

I said "sentence", some parts of sentences are correct, then followed by bullshit.

Yes, it's apples and oranges, the only real content of that first sentence makes 0 sense and comes out of nowhere, what's a comparison like that supposed to be? It again gives off the impression of a teenager who's just kind of going through a list of "cool stuff" in his head.

>Emerging in the 12th century
12th is the Taira revolution followed by the establishment of the first shogunate, they have been around longer than that.

>True but misleading
That's exactly what I said, the sentences that are technically true are misleading, which is horrible for an educational entry.

>far superior to Western longswords
This is again one of those statements why I call it headcanon.

>Some also carried bow or spear
Only true because "some" can mean pretty much anything between 1% and 99%, again sends the completely wrong message after they originally said that they tipically "carry" the swords, and now use a weak word like "some" to suggest that a Samurai who doesn't use his Katana in battle is a deviation from the norm.

The question is really about this: Do you want to actually be educational, or do you just aim to be "not technically wrong"? If it's the latter, the paragraph is at least mostly correct with a few errors, as you pointed out, but if that's your goal, why even write the silly thing in the first place?

>sworn to follow the code of Bushido
>correct
Bushido as we know it was largely constructed by a 19th century scholar who wanted to romanticize Japan's warrior past and make it seem more appealing to westerners. Similar to knightly chivalry, it was something cobbled together from various treatises written over a wide period of time that reflected ideals rather than reality. So no, this is not correct, it's typical orientalist horseshit.
>True but misleading, the two swords were mostly symbolic and not actually the primary combat arms of samurai
Swords were not symbols of the samurai until the Edo Period, by which time samurai had ceased to be warriors and had settled into the role of decadent landlords. Prior to that swords were used commonly by samurai and peasants alike, there were no rules in place about who could use a sword until Toyotomi Hideyoshi started confiscating swords from peasants at the tail end of the sengoku jidai and set the social classes in stone. Swords were absolutely not "symbolic" for samurai in the sengoku jidai or in the gempei war, they were put to bloody use as effective side arms, just like in Europe.
>Longswords and katanas were made in different contexts in different purposes
A katana is a fucking sword, it was made to kill people. There's no special context. The katana is over-engineered just like everything else the Japanese do. Katanas are only "superior" to other swords in the sense that they are made with very refined techniques and centuries of perfected craftsmanship. This has nothing to do with how effective a weapon it is.

>as we know it
The correct version would need a huge treatise on confucianism in the non-summary sense, the four classes of people, the influence of taoism and buddhism, etc. The samurai WERE sworn to bushido, the same way the Greeks did use hoplites and vikings did raid people. Just because people incorrectly think of pop bullshit when they hear Phalanx or Berserkergang doesn't mean the terms are incorrectly applied.

>second point
You're right, but it's not like samurai didn't use swords ranging from tachi to zanbato. Also, peasants carried glorified sharpened sticks they called swords and bows / spears, like everyone else because swords are backup weapons.

>made to kill people
A crossbow is also made to kill people, the CKN especially poisoned mows down levy mobs but a guy in chain or lamellar is likely to get away rather safely.
I'm sure you'll post a webm of a katana breaking on a longsword, but if you're smashing swords together that sword won't last long. As for armor, well, like most slashing weapons, it doesn't really do shit against all but the most rudimentary of armors and was backup for close quarters, unlike the longsword / bastard sword which could be and often was a primary weapon.

Universal Sci-Fi rule : Writers, designers, artists are all humans, any extraterrestrial species will exhibit blatant human or anthropomorphic attributes or referencing
>>

I really hated that in Mass Effect.
>all aliens must act the same

>>
>>160993259
So why did they magyar it up when every other race has a seemingly original naming convention?
Did it have something to do with the backers?
>>
>>160993439

Well, until we find actual extraterrestrial species, intelligent or not, and assuming they don't happen to be a more or less literal application of that rule (very humanoid or anthropomorphic in a way that computes with Earth animal species, uncanny match of their culture and language systems with -one of- ours), we don't really know what being an ET is like

Trying to simulate a very alien civilization tends to alienate the viewer/player in a way that is hard to recover, so it's better to put up "recolored human, furry mammal anthropomorphic, generic reptilian species, generic fringe insect/marine species" as the sentient palette

>>160993469

Perhaps, it seems a bit nonsensical since the company making it is French. Maybe they just found something inherently exotic about "Eastern European languages" that fit with one of their species

Does anybody here actually use the "Levy Military" function?
>>
>>160993780
I dunno mate. I remember reading a book, "Shogun" by Dave Clavell. I found it pretty interesting, for it really showed Japanese people being different.
It's a bit distressing that they ended up being more aliens than actual aliens are in most sci-fi works, with strange concepts that don't translate well for westerners. Like their honour, for example. It's okay to be a backstabbing cunt, as long as you're not caught doing it.
>>
>>160994000
Yes, and that's generally considered very well done. The problem is that while B-O is already fucking hard individually (how do you write a compelling but completely alien character? Sociopaths are a cheap way, but even so...), it's even harder on a species / society level because you need to rebuild a society that meshes with those values from scratch.
Hell, Shogun at least had a real life society to model off.
>>
>>160994148
The easy way is to just have aliens having different values than humans.
Most of these are overused (like the "live for the hivemind, no individuality" thing), but in Shogun's example, it's not really having different values but interpretating them differently. The pilot value human life, and only consider mating with women, so when a peasant is killed for not bowing to a samurai or when he's asked if he would like a young boy for the night, he's extremely shocked.
>>
>>160994278
Having different values is much harder to do in a compelling fashion because human understanding of society and interaction stems off the basic value system humans generally share, so an archwraith that legitimately kills and tortures of her own will without ill intent but simply because a person was there or a divine being who views the world as a fanfiction and so rapes one person then drops ten tons of gold in her deposit as thanks is difficult to truly fathom and even harder to write in a compelling fashion. That's the basis of Blue and Orange, when you've reached the point where the subject is so fucking alien in their basic values that concepts like honor, good, evil, and malice don't apply anymore.
To extend that to an entire society? Unthinkable.
>>
>>160994278
The problem with that is that often having aliens who behave too differently from humans just causes human readers to get frustrated at their apparently illogical behavior, like the bugs in the Ender series not having any concept of fiction or the Kiliks in the Star Wars EU being literally incapable of perceiving the existence of the corrupted dark side kiliks, and this causes conflict that just has you tearing your hair out over how it doesn't make sense.
For something to make sense to us and not be infuriating, it has to be able to exist within our frame of reference.

Civ IV is polished, more balanced, and has features like sliders and non-worthless ocean V and VI lack as well as more reasonable diplomacy and a different civic system replaced with trees and now cards. It also has many good mods available like FFH2 and C2C and a huge stockpile of misc. mods with a passably active scene even today.
It's also less pretty than V for the most part and looks like it was made for XP, which it was. Civ VI has potential (modders pls, patches pls), but is too new right now.
V and therefore VI also have the dreaded 1UPT which can be a dealbreaker for some much like EU4's monarch points or Rome 2's many obliterated features, that doubles as a huge AI stumbling block since it can't handle movement. 1UPT can make moving units more clunky as well and a common criticism is production scaling with 1UPT, often making units obselete before you've gotten to making any.

>>160995361
>Squares -> Hexes
Good. Glorious.

>1UPT
Horrendous, can't even be modded out easily, less tactical because the AI is beyond retarded and the little flanking minigame isn't enaging for the player, 'doomstacks' are both tactically engaging for the player (multiplayer if you use them you'll get fucking obliterated by catapults and mods often add surround / flank damage) and easier for the AI.

Not really. The weapon balance has been changed, but now it's just fucked in another way. The only new content is from the Leviathan DLC which is ludicriously overprized for what it does, as you can expect from Paradox. Performance is still shit in endgame. The AI hasn't changed much, except they now from crazy amounts of defensive pacts now so it's only a matter of time before the galaxy turns into pre-WW1 Europe.

http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/24/13740720/civilization-6-and-black-friday-greed

>For me, Civ 6 has been the first game in the series where I've prioritized scouts for investigating as much of the map as early as I could, in order to know where those barbarians are and to benefit from encounters with friendly villagers along the way. In Black Friday terms, I'm scouting out each and every deal in order to know which ones will be most profitable for me to grab.

>But the problem is that with more information comes the responsibility to capitalize on that extra intel and to optimize every action. If I found my second city just that little bit further out from the capital, I reason, I can harvest an extra banana plantation. If I push my third city just that little bit further out still, I can also secure precious gems and a source of sugar. It would be irresponsible not to be greedy in my development plans and leave that silver un-mined. What ends up happening is that my fear of missing out mixes with my abundance of information and leaves me with a fragmented empire that's riddled with defensive vulnerabilities (or, in internet speak, FOMO + TMI = sad). I never do make it to the point of mining that silver because I've quit the game a few turns after overextending because my neighbors bothered to build an army.

Yes, all the time. City-states often have convenient locations, and even with inferior units they can distract the enemy for a significant amount of time while you get your actual forces positioned correctly. If you're rolling in the dosh it can even be worthwhile to upgrade them.

I dunno, I try to follow the advice in the threads.

I do just fine until war is declared, and then I tend to get wiped out.

I mean, I managed to take out the Enigmatic Fortress without losing a single ship -- not one corvette -- but then someone declared war on me and they have twice as many ships as I do and I get destroyed.

My energy/mineral/research income is fine, I think; I tell the sector to ignore tile resources, redevelop, and focus on a balanced output.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
>>
>>161008865
I should note that I didn't have time after solving the Enigmatic Fortress to research its technology and upgrade my ships before war was declared.

Otherwise, I might have fared better.
>>
>>161008865
Keep track of all your neighbours' strength, and try to go to war against the one that don't like you.

The issue was that I had two Spiritualist/Materialist empires nearby, they became best friends, and coveted my territory. I had some allies, but they were all further away.

I always lose to Crisis Events and I've been considering turning them off, too.

That's actually still very controversial, the allies for the most part didn't even try to collect full reparations and the german economic collapse has also been theorized as being due to poor economic policy (I've even heard theories that such economic collapse was planned by the government, but I don't know whether to trust that)

>>
>>161017047
It isn't. The US views Japan favorably because Japan is a puppet state, not vice versa-opinion is neutral there. Japan is a puppet state because they are literallly forced to do whatever they say by geopolitics
They're not an ally at all. They're a puppet, they get little to no say in things (see China's Asia Bank which Japan suddenly withdrew from before it was completed and Obama repeatedly telling EU members not to invest in it, or the missile defence system being in Korea instead of Japan, which they're unhappy about) but they can't not be puppets because of politics, military disparity / economic stagnation, and Abe being dumb as a brick and steadfast on war crime denial which obviously pisses off the Chinese and Koreans. The US likes them because they're obedient little bitches and their asian outpost to fuck with Russia and China who the US doesn't want to share hegemon status with so they need a base to project influence from. Japan's relationship with the US? Mediocre for such a ''close ally''.

>>
>>161017715
>It isn't
Yes it is, and nothing you've said has actually contradicted that.
Obviously there is real politic involved. Obviously the US is a bigger country than Japan and heavily influences it. This does not dismiss the obvious circularity of your logic.
I seriously can't even tell what the fuck you are trying to argue. You have basically said: Japan doesn't have any other options so it is controlled by US hegemony except it does have other options that Abe consistently fucks up because he hates Koreans/Chinese (or is pandering to his constituency that does).
So I can conclude from that that:
Japan could break from US imperial yoke if it wanted to, and is therefore largely continuing to remain under US power by choice
Japan has estranged itself from alternatives to US influence largely due cultural hatred
Japan seemingly has little to no such hatred with the US due to WW2

No shit the US isn't literally Japan's boyfriend and holds significant hold on its foreign policy, that's like saying your job is oppressing you for forcing you to change your lifestyle by actually working: you can make some arguments of wage slavery, but that still doesn't diminish the preference of working at one job from another and that you prefer your current employer/owner to the alternatives.

AI must get some fucking insane production bonuses on high difficulties. I start next to two stone resources and they still have four warriors AND an extra city before I can even finish my first settler. Their capital only has one stone resource and no woods.
>>
>>160995301
its a dumb game. theres no reason in the game to actually grow cities because of whipping. population converts directly into hammers at a stupid rate, and the granary is too strong. AI gets fucking abused by catapult splashing their stacks. every civ game is powerfully flawed and that includes 4.
>>
>>161026351
Ehhh. Not really. Some of the pantheon bonuses can be pretty crazy. +10/15% growth rate isn't really much.
>>
>>161028092
which bonuses can be pretty crazy. i think pantheons are much shittier in 6. the map generator never puts you near a plurality of any kind of tile, except tundra or stone, and rarely banana+other plantation. even fishing boats is near impossible to make it pay off.

>>161027875
And with that, it is still head and shoulder above Civ games that came after. There's no reason to grow your cities? How about actually working the tiles and specialists? Slavery is by far the most powerful but it falls out of use quickly as as measly 30 production per citizen isn't gonna cut it when production cost and of everything and food box of new citizen increases as game goes on. AI gets abused even without player intervention under 1upt where they can't even mount a attack on city without tripping over itself on the way. Granaries are too strong compared to what, 4 warrors? You want to build it in every city. In that sense are granary, monument, library in Civ 5 overpowered too?
>>
>>161028345
I mean. If you're near a bunch of stone then get stone circles.

It's not that the expansion choices are terrible, it's just you're more likely to have a start and a strategy where one of the other choices is much better. You're Egypt and have a bunch of floodplains? Holy shit +4 production at the start of the game. Beats the hell out of a tiny amount extra food on your cities.
>>
>>160990801
I've never had much luck with the multiplayer in it. It's an RTS though, played in real time. No turns. Playing it will make you realize how shitty Stellaris's battles are though. I have to imagine they're just horribly bugged; I also read someone mentioning they're explicitly bugged and awaken too early right now.

I also know they're bugged from first hand experience. Same situation as you, I decided to become their Thrall and hope for an endgame crisis to weaken them so I could look for a chance to strike them down. They declared war against other empires and liberated a planet in my name. This is a problem because I wasn't in the war, wasn't given a notification of this, and it somehow became my protectorate which I'm not allowed to have, and I wasn't even allowed to revoke my protection of them (with the tooltip listing the usual 'We aren't independent' spiel for why I couldn't); the Awakened Empire then declared war on them and I was forced to declare war on the AE.

I just turn Fallen Empires off now; as much I love the idea the execution needs work.

I've been playing a pirated copy for the past month, and I've gone through at least thirty hours of gameplay so far. And I keep wanting to go back to it for some reason.

Every playthrough ends up remarkably similar in many ways, but I feel like the first four or five playthroughs will feel quite distinct.

I think the replayability comes mostly from your willingness to try new styles of empire and new map/ftl setups.

>>161030204
It's one of those half truths, they did have certain ideals about how to behave, but compiling it together into a mystical code and calling it "the bushido" was a 19th century thing.

So I agree that you can't really say they were "sworn to bushido" as the other anon said, but the ideas weren't just made up either. That being said, if there wasn't some strict holy code they swore upon, the statement then basically boils down to "people in the past had certain ideas and expectations about proper behaviour", which doesn't exactly deserve that kind of glorification.

I genuinely can't enjoy civ 6.
The fact you have to go wide every game to compete.
The fact the AI is pants on head retarded. I just played a game where I found Rome on turn 80 or something, then 3 turns later he declares a formal war on me with Japan who I found 10 turns before that. No denouncing. No sending me frowny face messages, just formal war.
Fuckhueg production costs on buildings and districts.
The tech tree is still empty and unfinished.

It's just not fun.
>>
>>161044424
thats not exactly true because at the same time, city size is more useless than ever. so you dont actually need every tile.
and theres a positive interpretation of making tiles less useful. it makes leaders more competitive for the good tiles, which can translate into more interesting gameplay. if too many tiles are useful, everyone is playing solitaire and theres no competition.

Battleships need to be divided into Dreadnoughts and a higher-tech Iowa-type BB on-par with the destroyer. The destroyer itself should be split into two units like it was in IV; the early modern Destroyer, and late modern Stealth Destroyer. Shore attacking of the tope from II needs to be returned to make non-ranged ships from not being completely useless, and either a separate animation should be made for subs shore-bombarding or it should be removed since at the moment they perform practically the same role as battleships.

Of course, that's ignoring all the condensation that has happened to land units like Riflemen and Lancers/Landships being deleted leaving huge gaps between musketmen and infantry and knights and tanks.

Can anybody identify the race that the ships on the left belong to? Just integrated a vassal and found a 4.5k fleet of unidentified aliens sitting peaceably in one of their systems. The game doesn't give me a project to investigate. I would chalk this up as a bug, but I don't recognize these ship types as belonging to any general species template.

When I kill them, the admiral looks Avian, but these don't seem like avian ships, right?
>>
>>161056667
>but these don't seem like avian ships, right?

City design (and more relevantly, ship design) are not tied to species group. A species can be molluscoid and have plantoid cities and arthropoid ships, for example.

That said, I think those unidentified vessels are probably Nomads or Privateers. Do you have the Leviathan DLC?
>>
>>161056986

I do have Leviathan. I'm new to the game, so I haven't run into most of the content from the DLC yet. I'll go ahead and mop those guys up, then. Thanks for the info.

Shame that their ships actually look a damn sight better than most of the normal ones.
>>
>>161057453
If they're Privateers, you'll definitely want to eliminate them.

Looking at your picture though, it doesn't seem like they started out as hostile, so they must have been Nomads or something else. The fact that you couldn't investigate or research them is most likely due to a bug.

The megasquid is four metres tall, and weighs eight tonnes. Physically, it appears to be very different to regular squid - however, save for a few differences, they are very similar to a squid, but tilted vertically.

The main body is the most like that of a squid, with a large mantle and small eyes. This mantle is porous, as air can flow through it to reach the lungs and keep the animal alive. The small brain is located just behind the eyes.

However, everything below the mantle is strange and foreign. Its eight tentacles have evolved into eight 1/3 metre thick, column like legs, reminiscent of elephant or sauropod legs. >These legs are composed entirely of circular, vertical rings of muscle. In addition, it has grown two extra tentacles, used as arms. These two arms are more like the tentacles of a regular squid.

Just some simple reskins like being able to play a militaristic catgirl dictatorship already goes a long way desu.

That being said, I'd still recommend getting at least 20 mods or so. Stellaris's strong point is imho the empire creation and the relatively massive workshop content compared to other games like it, so anything related to adding more customization in terms of race, traits, government, etc, is pretty good. If someone just wants to play generic space aliens with mostly preset traits, they're probably better off with another game, since Stellaris's gameplay itself doesn't offer much variety.

There's a certain irony in how Stellaris of all games made the decision to not count achievements if you use mods. No wonder almost nobody has even the simple ones like "establish a colony". I can't imagine ever playing the vanilla game.

The AI has a greater value on competing with you for space on your landmasses. AKA, Gandy is trying to bully you with his culture, and take all the tiles he can around you.

It doesn't matter if you have a single tile island to take or a tundra with a river on it, the AI will want to settle there just to piss you off and try to swipe tiles from you.

On the flip side, it also means he has a beachhead for his troops attacking your cities as well.

Guardians, Shadows, Shifters and Tempest are must-have. As for requirements, it largely depends on the game settings you have.
