Also, by "nice amount of money", if you read on into that post you'd see I meant actually a tiny amount. At $10 a copy, you could easily sell 2000 copies if your title's not shit and you have good enough word of mouth. That's $20k, enough to get you out of your house and renting somewhere new.

I don't know, anon. I accept people as they are, but I still think that only a minority of gay/lesbian people are actually that, and for the great majority it's just a fetish got out of control or they have other mental problems. Like bad parenting from the opposite sex, bad first experiences with the opposite sex leads to the false conclusion that you might be into your own sex, misunderstanding good friendship with love etc.

So no hope is lost, but other than that, focus your energies and efforts and thoughts on things worth working for.

When did I say requires it? And I call horseshit, people make games for themselves all the time and they get a bit of cash from it. There's enough people out there that unless you make ABSOLUTE dog shit you're going to appeal to some sort of audience, just a matter of letting them know.

>>160696607

Honestly, I'm still not sure, I was hoping that testing things out would make it more clear in my head. I sort of want to keep it calm and comfy with no combat (talking to people, picking up objects, collecting stuff etc) but at the same time I had some ideas related to combat that I wanted to try, though this control scheme doesn't sound suited for combat to me. I know Diablo and some other games use it, but it jut doesn't click pun not intended with me.

What are you trying to do? Become a programmer in a game dev company? Or lead your own?

Because sounds like you need to go get yourself some free resources, make several fun prototypes out of them and put together a resumé explaining why you're a decent enough programmer for some company to hire you.

That or make friends who want to do game art/music.

No, don't bother. Just look around for an artist, either online or at your school (if you go to school). If you're out of education, look up nearby recreational art groups/centres/wherever, or the nearest university's Facebook group. You don't need to get your friend to spend cash, that's just a waste.

And again, you could just embrace the minimalist style. Just do vaguely shaped groups of blocks with a bunch of different colours, who gives a fuck, just get something on your resumé.

Alternatively, learn to mod something and reorganize assets into something new.

What you're telling me is you want to design a game, but have no design skills. The answer is to develop those design skills, over time. Doing this with shitty programmer art is fine.

Bare in mind, all prototypes look like shit until final art is put over them, so it's not like you need to do a AAA quality artistic effort to get something your resumé.

>methodologies

You'll find little in the way of standardization when it comes to AI, pretty much every game has something built from the ground up specifically for whatever they want. Closest you'll come to having standard code across games is pathfinding.

Maybe it's having a background in system design that helps me out, but generally what I do is I ask what specifically I want them to do, detail it a bit further, then plan out the actual classes/methods that would be involved and what would be effected. Usually happens on the go, and gets refactored later on once I get it doing what I want as well as I can.

What game are you making? People here could give you examples of games in that genre with decent AI that you could try and "solve" to figure out how they did it.
>>

>>160701384

If you follow my replies, I did say it was to get a few prototypes under your belt so you can try and get a job somewhere that puts you in a team with actual artists/game designers for a while.

I'd say your best bet though is game jam forums. As far as I'm aware people match up for collabs there pretty well.

Do you want to build with legos and never actually learn anything (Unreal Blueprints) or use the greatest programming language in the world (C#)?
>>
>>160701150
Depends on your scope and experience.

Finite State Machines (FSM): As a beginner these are easy to grasp and the way they work is pretty transparent. Because you need to explicitly code each transition between states, adding a new state becomes a chore and weakpoint for bugs, because you may need to code 15 transitions or more.
A subclass of Finite State Machines are Fuzzy State Machines, which one should take a look at.

Goal-Oriented Action-Planning (GOAP): The system behind the AI in F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is used to enable npcs to solve problems by selecting a plan that consists of a pool of actions available to them. For example, a mob has an unloaded gun, a magazine or clip for that gun, a knife, and the goal to kill the player. The GOAP plan to solve this could look like
(rangeToPlayer < distance) -> MeleeAttack
or
(rangeToPlayer > distance && hasAmmo) -> reloadGun -> (gunLoaded) -> shootPlayer
or even
(rangeToPlayer > distance && hasNoAmmo) -> moveToPlayer -> (rangeToPlayer < distance) -> Meleeattack
It's difficult to set up at first, but easily extendable. Having many entities planning can be taxing on the CPU, so GOAP is to be implemented with care. Advanced users only for sure.

Behaviourtrees are kinda the midpoint between the two. Instead of allowing every state at once, you have parent nodes of actions which branch into leaf actions specific to that parent node. This way one cuts down on possible actions and therefore decisionmaking is less taxing, since there are fewer options to consider.

Any of these is interesting on its own, so I recommend taking a gander at them even if you have decided on another.

Not that guy, but Unreal's blueprint system is fine for anyone but programmers. It's much less intuitive than they'd have you believe, and jumping to that from pure programming or the other way around will be a punch in the gut for anyone. Their scripting editor is bugged too - if you don't write in their exact format, the bastard thing just crashes out and gives poor error reports.

Decent engine when you get it working anyway.

How is GOAP different from a FSM exactly? In your GOAP example, wouldn't the state machine just be like:

IdleAction()
{
if(rangeToPlayer < distance)
ChangeState(Melee);
else if(rangeToPlayer > distance && hasAmmo)
ChangeState(Reload);
else if(rangeToPlayer > distance && hasAmmo == false)
ChangeState(Shoot);
}

I added support for rendering many different pokemans with one material/drawcall.
Every creature has an index to a spritesheet that determines its sprite, and I can display it by changing the UV's of the quad that makes up a creature.

At the moment I can support up to 64 different species in the world, but it should be easy enough to grow/shrink the spritesheet dynamically.

It's difficult to show the advantage of GOAP in small scope. It's really designed to plan around a bigger pool of actions, which include for example dodging behaviour, shooting from cover, picking up weapons and ammo etc. An important attribute of an action is its cost, which makes it more or less desirable compared to other actions. It's also easily expanded to work with squad behaviour and strategic AI.

Don't get me wrong, GOAP isn't a big separate thing from all other methods of creating intelligence. In fact, at the base of GOAP is a FSM that switches between two (three) states: MoveTo and Animate (/Perform action).
The dynamically plotted list of actions is probably the biggest difference and main advantage over just FSM. It's basically a tool to lift some wieght off the designer's back.

Defining an action works like this: Define preconditions, define effects on world state, done. If an agent is allowed to use this action, just add it as a child node (or however your engine works). Would you want to limit the actions available to an entity in a pure FSM, you'd have

if (entity != type_dog && entity != type_helicopter && ...)
if !hasAmmo: findAmmo
else if entity != type_lasershark: BearclawAttack
etc. (Or alternativeley create a new FSM for each entity with lots of copypasted code)

I appreciate the writeup. After I posted, I realized AI is probably the wrong term for what I'm doing. There isn't really decision-making, its more like a scripting system, making sure all requirements are met, and if not, do the action to fulfill the missing requirements. And then that action has its own requirements and so on. So GOAP sounded good because of hasAmmo -> reloadGun, but it sounds like thats more about evaluating between options rather than parsing out nested requirements. It sounds like Behaviour trees are the way to go for my game.

>>160701559
Its funny you mention that AI is purpose-built per game, this was the first aspect that I specifically stopped myself from starting off with home-rolling something and looked for existing solutions first. All existing assets seemed to focus on movement, whereas I'm looking for more requirement fulfillment.

I'm working on a hacking game, so an example of what I want would be:
NPC, say "hello world" in this chat channel
Am I joined to that chat channel? If so, do speak("hello world")
Am I connected to the server that hosts that channel?
Is the chat program that I need to connect with, running on my computer?
Do I have a chat program executable I can run?
Do I have a browser running where I can download the chat program executable?

So its more like theres only one solution to any given problem, but they'll stack up.

No probs. Working on my own implementation in Godot right now, which is why I'm so vocal about it.
There isn't that much data on the web sadly, mainly the original site by Jeff Orkin (Designer for the outstanding AI in F.E.A.R.): http://alumni.media.mit.edu/~jorkin/goap.html
Plus I think 2 bachelor papers that heavily reference his work. The one in german is actually a pretty good read and much closer to today's tech than the other (Orkin was 2003, the first paper in 2005 and the german one in 2011 or 2013, not sure which).

I'm also loosely basing my work on this Unity implementation: https://github.com/sploreg/goap
I recommend looking at that if you have the time. Just open it in Notepad(++) if you don't use Unity.

I'm sorry, but that would fall under the "Damsel in distress" trope as discussed in Tropes Vs. Women episode 1.
>>

So think of a way to structure that, programmatically.

e.g.
>Command - containers for details of a specific command
>Event - containers for a sequence of Commands, as well as when to perform the list of commands (i.e. what triggers the event)
>GameController - controls all updates in the games, and at specific points knows when to check if any Events have been triggered, before parsing the Commands that go along with it

That's a high-level view of it, but it's a start.

I'd really suggest going through different sites like Project Euler. They present problems, and you have to solve them in your language of choice. It helps teach problem solving skills, which are essential for you solving the problem of how to create your AI.

Better bet for someone with no friends is to find something local that you enjoy and just mingle. Bars are a fucking no go though, because the movies were lying.

Unluckily for me, I'm into nerdy shit, and going to comic stores to make friends is like stepping into a sweaty sock filled with teenage me's. No I do not give a fuck about Brexit. No I do not give a fuck about whether you like DC or not. Talk to me like a human being.

On the other hand, I made several close, global friends during my teen years on video games and streaming sites and now keep in touch and visit them regularly.

Even its stealth mechanics relied heavily on the well designed levels.

It's definitely a core aspect. More than many other aspects. Interesting player mechanics as gameplay features are nice and all but they need to be well integrated into the level design actually making the thing a game instead of a lackluster sandbox.
Looking glass games are actually the perfect examples for that.
Their levels are like shattered pieces of a world and the player has the toolbox to fix them and put them together and make sense of them. Ideally in a couple of ways. What do all the water arrows in the world get me if I have no opportunity to use them intelligently?

I'm making games for a creative outlet.

I do literally everything. Tabletop roleplaying games, writing half finished novels, screenplays, fanficition, just making shit up in my head.

I even do autistic fantasies. I open up a game where you can create a character and create a few characters, level them up just a little bit, then imagine their adventure through another world using the random skills or items they had.

I am literally fucking autistic. If I didn't have any outlet for my creative energy I would kill myself.

>>
>>160711684
tower defense is retardedly simple

as mentioned, GM has an inbuilt pathing system
>>
>>160711684
Honestly, I can see it being really easy to implement.

Since tower defense levels almost always have a single path, you can draw it out manually in the editor (rather than creating it in code if it needed to be a dynamic path), and have a path per level. Then you could just use distance_to_point for the turrets and activate them if they get in range. Then set a timer that creates enemies, make an upgrade system, and code in placing turrets, and you're golden.
>>
>>160711684
Pretty easy. 2-3/10.
You make a grid as your playing field / level.
On this grid, you can either
- have all tiles available for tower construction
- have reserved tiles for towers and critters
Then define one or more entry points that spawn bad guys.
Then an exit point for them to head to.
Pathfinding utilizes GMS native functions.

Add towers and bad guys as you wish.

Let all the enemies attack you but if the player is smart/good you can get the enemies to attack each other, and then they will hurt or even turn on each other and let you sit back and watch.

why. also the problem with making rpg's is that there's so much involved in the creative process as well as the actual development that it becomes a hassle to juggle between the two. it can be done but if you're not actually committed to completing it then you most likely won't. but anyway good luck with it

>>
>>160719705
There's a severe lack of traditional roguelikes with modern graphics.
ASCII is charming and all, but I wouldn't mind seeing a roguelike with modern graphics.

And lots of people play roguelikes, they're essentially turn based strategy games where you control one unit with perma death. So it's not like it's some super niche genre. The only thing that makes it niche is the ASCII graphics.

More than a year with the same bullshit, think about it. And the mods don't do anything about this ongoing shit, frankly I'm tired of reporting these posts.

It's going to be hard to notice the progress of the real devs over all that shitpost but at this point there's nothing else we can do considering that the mods don't care.

Interested in applying for a Vidya dev internship.
Currently in first year of CS degree. What kind of stuff would I be doing there? Anything out of my depth? Or unimportant stuff to help me learn?

I generally have no clue how internships work, but I'd like to get into one this summer, game related or just generally software engineering related.
>>
>>160721719
there are hardly any internships at game companies, and generally they want you to be going in to your 3rd or 4th year so you're not completely useless. but you should apply everywhere, regardless. defense contractors are notorious for taking literally anyone (raytheon ,northrup, lockheed, etc)

generally they just give you some small minor task and you're assigned one person as a mentor and you spend all summer trying to finish that task the task could be like make a UI for saving/loading games, or set up a web page/forums, or write a set of unit tests for the engine, etc. (usually something no one else wants to do)

[.rant]
When you have time to lurk in agdg for 2-5 days straight it's pretty easy to see the patterns actually.

The problem is not the copy-paste but him doing it non-stop. I had a flu last week and stayed home for 2-3 days, and I just saw how bad it really was.
- First day started with his source-progress-20 replies pattern that lasts for 6 hours.
- Then he proceeded to do the usual "reek/source/danny are fighting hahahaha :)" for 4 hours
- Then he proceeded to bully bokudev, and switched to bully all unitydevs because he's supposedly a "superior C++ user" for 3 hours.

That made 13 hours and 2 threads wasted because of this shit.

- The thread got like 6 hours without him, showing that he probably went to sleep.
- Immediately after the 6th hour, he started doing the same source-Xreplies shit again, and from there the pattern went exactly the same way as I've mentioned earlier.

This happened for 4 days straight. I don't know what happened after because I personally got pissed at the dedication of one guy to shit up the thread just because he doesn't like it. I got better, decided to come back to agdg only to see that he's still at it today.
Seriously, what can you do when half a thread is the same guy doing the same exact shit for one year long without the mods caring?

Wrote in some flight computer logic so that whenever the gear is down, the computer automatically commands -3m/s of vertical velocity. This way the ship automatically goes down for a landing, and simulates gravity in a sense.

When the wheels touch down on something, all the lateral thrusters stop firing so you don't have the thrusters pushing you down the entire time you're on the ground.

This is the stuff that I was curious to test, and was actually the whole point of this project.

You can land vertically, but that's not as fun.
>>
>>160726263
>but you can't save the newdevs who have no idea of the complexity of this bullshit
Yes, exactly, and this is why this is bullshit. And I'm pretty sure that he's doing it on purpose for that reason alone.
I mean, we old users have learned to deal with this idiot but we lost quite a deal of devs because of that and the new ones are just not going to deal with the shit, and we can't just put a "Beware of this guy" in the OP.

I've spelled out his behavior a few time to what I believe were really confused newposters (as opposed to sourcefam impersonating bewildered newposters which he also does). When describing his behavior in a way to 'warn' others of what he will do, you find yourself sounding completely ridiculous because his behavior is literally that insane. He alternates between shitposting the same things over and over and copy and pasting old posts from years back out of context at people, he's a fucking weirdo. This is 4chan and shitposting is common but this attitude is beyond shitposting, he's just mentally retarded. I'm starting to think that this is why the mods have stopped to care a few months ago. Reek has never made a game and probably never will. He is greatly upset whenever he is reminded of this as evidenced by his outbursts ITT. He is mentally ill and believes 'danny' or 'mothdan' has something to do with this. It is that simple.

Well damn guys, sorry to ask this again, but I absolutely cannot fucking figure it out.
In Unity, how can I make a camera only render through a given area? I need the fragments rejected BEFORE it renders them, for performance reasons.

I can't figure out any way to do a stencil test on the camera itself, only on individual surface shaders... which isn't very useful, seeing as I can't expect users to apply a custom shader to literally everything in the entire god damn scene.
Why doesn't unity support raw GL calls? This would be so easy if I could enable a stencil test during the camera's rendering.

I want to reject the fragments in the area marked "dead". The camera renders to a texture and the texture is only visible within that box anyway so there is no need to render the extra shit. The near clipping plane is set to be the same as the portal plane (even if it is oblique), but if you are far away from a portal even if it only needs to render 1x1px it still renders the full fov

> I think that if your camera is just outside the portal, doing it by FOV and properly aligning it to the dimensions of the portal should be fine
If I were "properly aligning it" it would be, but due to the nature of portals aligning it isn't exactly possible- the camera moves as the inverse relative of the original camera.

>portal looks a lot better than your game does in general
this isn't a game, it's a test scene for development of the asset (it might be a game later)

And of course portal looks better than what I (or anyone here) made, it's a AAA game studio title. it looks good as /portal/ but not as any other game- after all, looks are almost exclusively asset quality.

Also, you're overlooking a big thing consistently

no

Yeah
and you know what?
It doesn't work well in VR because guess what's still being rendered through the portal: Two eyes, because it is VR and VR renders in stereoscopic 3d with two eyes whether you are looking at a book or a reflection or a portal because human beings have two eyes

that's stupid because you can easily place only have one camera there. if you have two cameras per portal, then you can adjust the distance of them using very simple trig to maintain parallax, not that it's necessary, since things focused to infinity can be simulated with one camera and things focused to infinity literally exist in real life and dont make people throw up

I've been thinking of a way to make MTG-style auras better. How about making them castable twice? Playing it the first places a copy in your hand that doesn't copy itself. That way each aura is "half" a card and card disadvantage is less of a thing.

I found a solution (I think) in the form of a very low renderqueue quad that is rendered in front of the camera that is then stenciled away by the portals themselves
For some reason it isn't functioning on the portal cameras but the concept seems sound, I'm sure it's just a minor bug.
At least, I /think/ this should prevent the other geometry from being rendered. It should since it's at a low queue and is writing to the depth buffer, right?

the image on the left is just a brush with a texture
the fuzzier image on the right is a rendertarget texture

the camera is some distance away from the image on the left, and yet requires

its just set to a FOV of about 15.8 so it captures only the orange box with the measure icon guy innit and none of the area around

Plus, that method wouldn't work with circular portals.

I hope you have a lot of time to kill. With no experience starting into 3D multiplayer with several gamemodes.. even if you have a very small scope (which I doubt), I'm gonna guess 2 months until you successfully built a semi-robust system.

I'm not interested in going too deep into gamedev, as I know it's a torture and doesn't even pay well, so I won't venture into 3D nor complex gameplay. But I'm considering making a simple fun 2D game with a nice enough story. I want to better my writing skills in the process. Is it hard to make a game like Ace Attorney, Undertale or Retro City Rampage on my own? How long will it take for a total beginner with some free time?
>>
>>160742558
maybe 5 months to make undertale if youre a beginner.

Yes, 2D is hard, too. You'd be surprised how hard it is and the problems you face. If you want to make a VN, I think there is software for that that can make it easier. But even then, if you are able to minimize programming, you still have:

Art, music and writing.

All of which are pretty difficult to get right.

About ten hours when choosing a beginner friendly engine with good tutorials until you have the first "gameplay", i.e. visible results. From then on it's all about scope, which will determine the timeframe from several weeks to several months (or even years if you are crap at learning and limiting yourself to achievable goals).

If improving your writing skills is your big focus in this, consider using Twine for pure text based stuff (high quality CYOA program with simple scripting language) or RenPy, which focusses on making Visual Novels.
>>
>>160742558
>Is it hard to make a game like Ace Attorney, Undertale or Retro City Rampage on my own?
yep
>How long will it take for a total beginner with some free time?
assuming around 6months to become competent first
Ace Attorney/Undertale is 2 months at the fastest (tight scope, no uncertainties in planning)
RCR is double that (because it conceptually has minimal scope)
>>

fortunately, I'm very interested in polishing my skills in all three, so I think I'll learn valuable stuff even if my initial idea for a game fails. I also got some software and webdev ideas I want to work on though.. I hope I'm making the right choice if I decide to invest my time in this.

How much time daily should I dedicate to gamedev if I want to see results in about 8 months to a year?

That doesn't mean everyone has/had access to it, or that it is in any way easier or more intuitive to learn. Latin has been around for longer than that.
>>
>>160750482
There are plenty of nice looking IRC clients with a nice degree of customization if you're so inclined.

Are you 10 or something? How do you expect to make a game if you can't into text commands? Even games use them really often, specially mmorpgs.
And most irc clients have flashy colored buttons for everything too. Text commands is just the fastest way to use it.
