2nd playthrough arcane anon here

holy shit, you guys weren't kidding about arcane builds. I just ran through the forbidden woods with the augur and it just straight up shits all over everything. It'd either 1-shot mobs or get them down to a fourth of their health. Was able to take down the watchdog with it too, just stayed behind it the whole time and spammed the augur at its kneecaps. Just sucks that it dropped a 9.5% fire and then an 8.5% fire the second time, not the 10+% you guys are getting. What should I be doing with my cane, btw? Right now I have the saw spear, cane, and flamesprayer all at +6, with 2 fire radials / 1 fire waning on the saw and 1 arcane triangle on the cane. Do I have to wait until later in the game to start getting arcane gems for the cane?

"Open" means when they are in the middle of doing something.

You've probably noticed how sometimes when you attack you do extra damage, or sometimes when you get attacked you take more damage than usual. That's because of counter-hits, you take more damage when you are "open".

During attack animations you are open

During the non I-frames of a dodge you are open.

While sprinting you are open.

When fighting enemies it only really counts in the middle of attacks, since enemies don't sprint and I'm not sure if thier dodges count as open. Anyway, it's a nice % bonus to attacks and ATK VS Open Foes stacks multiplicitivly with it. It's the best secondary effect you can get for non physical weapons in Pthumuru dungeons.

Have an enclipipiedic knowledge of how the game works. Damage formula's, exactly when certain things are avalible, what mob drops what types of gems and when the first farmable oppurtinity is.

Pick something you want to work towards. "Everything possible before Amelia" is already taken, and it seems someone else is doing Shadows, and another guy is writing up earliest useful gems for Arcane build's.

The problem is due to the games layout, you can technically have +10 weapon before Shadows, and 27% gems before One Reborn. So there's not much uniqueness there, it's basically so the same shit everyone does, but earlier. With Amelia and lesser extent shadows we had to find things no one had actually farnss before, because they just skipped to endgame stuff.

Maybe try making an autismo's guide to BLT. A step by step walk through on how to beat the game dealing nothing but Blood-damage. 15% BLT gems are avalible by Centeral Pthumuru (I'm still looking for a source of 23%'s). If you grinded 3 offshapes and put them in a rifle spear that would be pretty cool to have early-game. People have done gun-only runs before, so it's possible. You'd just be using much more powerful gems.

Elemental gems are best used with Arcane builds.
As any other gem that increases a weapons Arcane Scaling will increase the effect of that Elemental gem.

That's instability damage, not counter damage. "Vs. Open Foes" ONLY affects counter damage, I.E. just after an enemy attacks. Counter damage is increased by 20%, while instability damage is increased by 40%. Both those increases are after defenses.

I think some enemies in PvE have weird rules regarding counter damage (mostly they will take more than the usual +20% damage sometimes), but for NPCs, the player character, and enemies in PvP, this is always true. +% damage vs. Open Foes will have no effect when hitting another player or NPC while they are rolling or sprinting, or after they have been guard broken or staggered by a parry/backstab.

When is the most appropriate time to hop into the dlc so it's not too easy but not too hard either? You get the messenger drops for the dlc about 2-3 bosses into the game which clearly isn't a good time to go in as I was doing no damage and hunters were almost 1 shotting me.

Generally around BL60 is a good time to tackle the DLC. Make sure your weapons are +6 at LEAST, though. Mensis gems help a lot but aren't 100% necessary, as you can find some decent gems in the DLC anyway.

If the former, it's because he's a good, challenging boss with amazing music and a neat phase change.

LHB can shit out tons of damage, but I think it's a boring weapon. In a game with tons of unique weapon transformations, big sword is pretty bland. But, it's just my opinion. I'm sure other people love it, maybe for its moveset or stagger potential.

Sometimes when you kill shit in chalices, it can trigger a Bloodlicker to spawn where you did the deed. Either it somehow absorbed your echoes without being spawned in, which we would know happened if killing it restored your echoes, or you're an idiot and just happened to miss your bloodstain the first time, if it was on the floor after returning.

DLC is harder than anything in the base-game (Chalice's notwithstanding) so it's best to do it almost last before the final boss sends you into NG+.

If you do DLC after Micalosh but Before Wetnurse you can still get all unique dialogue from the Doll, and also do it at an appropriate time. Because you know know about Kos, and the DLC reveals more.

However, be warned: after you start adding DLC to your playthroughs Gehrman will never pose a Challange ever again.

I think you got counter hit, and ate the attack twice. Once as it finished it's first rotation, and again when it started it's second. You can see your health drop in two ticks. If that's too quick, you can also see the depleting red pause where the first hits damage end, and the seconds begins.

Bad dodge put you right in the wrong spot. And i'm pretty sure you did get counter hit, but i'm not going to look through frame by frame or anything.

I feel like Phtumerian Descendant/Elder were rejected Dark Souls bosses as they don't really mesh well with the rest of the Bloodborne bosses.

For the most part, Bloodborne bosses are hard but fair as each unique attack has a different starting animation. But Pthumerian Descendant takes a note out of DaS2 DLC and DaS3's book and gives him several different attack chains and variations all the same starting animation. Yes you can parry most of them with ease, and you can cheese phase 2 with infinite backstabs.

I'm not saying he's a difficult boss, I'm just saying I think he's more of a souls boss than a BB boss.

I'm not over-leveling. I just needed 250k(ish) echo's to reach the upper limit of what is an acceptable level range for Amelia. Offical Guide recommends entering forbidden Woods at level 40-50, so I'm going to be level 49 when I defeat Amelia and use the echo's from her to reach 50 as I begin forbidden woods. I've been at level 10 this entire time so I could film the leveling process all at once for video purposes. I will talk to Doll and get very first dialogue ("Hello Good Hunter, I am a doll") then level up from 10 to 49 with 0 spare echo's.

Also with savescumming I can record footage at level 10 killing her with gems and compare it to high level and no gems, just to see the difference. The main point of this project was to make an "Overpreparer's Guide to Vicar Amelia" in which I go to extreme lengths to prepare for an easy boss while staying at a "reasonable" level.

I have no quarrel with killing Amelia, but Depth 1 Root and Depth 2 aren't difficult nor that much of an inconvenience at that level. The only other BT gem I can think of is the droplet from Mensis by the brain.

For me a build is about the Journey not the destination, a BLT or ARC playthrough that is 90% Physical Saw Cleaver with Beast Blood Pellets isn't really a BLT or ARC playthrough. In my mind Chalice's don't really count as part of the game, so by getting gems in them early to use your prefered weapons for the actual fun content.

Your best bet would be killing BSB as soon as possible, grabbing the 12% Circle in Church Workshop for your pistol (+6 it early as you can) and also picking up the Rifle Spear. Then visit Chalice Dungeons and get the best gems you can, Physical Gems also boost Blood damage so Lumpy 20.3% Radials will work great on the Rifle spears shotgun. Triangle Gems from Clarence in Lower Hintertomb will also be very useful. Finding a source of circles would help for even better pistol shots and be of great use once you kill Simon in DLC and are able to buy a Lost Bowblade.

Post-patch I have no idea how Rifle Spear functions with Flat Damage boosts, but Flat Phys gems might be worth it.

fuck arcane is based. ACB fucking takes down bosses in just a few fires, literally only cast it 4 times in amygdala. Can't believe how much fun I'm having with this build, I know this is probably slow for you guys but I managed to get all the way to mergo's wet nurse in just a day of playing, which makes me pretty happy knowing that I'm not that great of a player.

When should I start chalices for fire/bolt/arcane gems? Currently all I've leveled is enough vitality to get to 20 and arcane to 70. +10 saw spear w/ 3 ~10% fire gems, +8 cane with ~20% arcane gem, and +6 flamesprayer. Is this enough to take on most chalices to get all the proper fire/bolt/arcane gems for my setup post-Mergo? Still have to rerun the old hunter's dlc as well. Can't wait to join you guys in some fight clubs / chalice co-op.

Allow infinite attempts against Gehrman but he offers the easy way out each time, after angering the Moon Presance your immortality is over so you have one attempt to kill it, otherwise it overpowers you. This means you have a proper final boss and a choice of two endings, and also a secret ending that is actually hard to obtain. Plus MP should be balanced for a character who's done all the Chalice's, it's just too easy. The secret final boss should be legendary in its difficulty and unforgivingness. One chance to beat the Eldrich monstrosity else it's bad ending for you.

You only have to use an early weapon for as long as it takes you to physically access your weapon. See below:

>Get a +3 weapon
>Kill Gascoigne
>Kill BSB
>Go into Yahar'gul and farm Twin Stones
>Get to +6
>Kill Amelia
>Raid Nightmare Frontier/Hunter's Nightmare/Cainhurst/Forbidden Woods for Chunks
>Get to +8 or +9
>Kill any other boss and clear any zone you want because +8 and good stats + story gems is enough to clear the NG easily

You don't even have to open shortcuts or kill bosses to raid those areas for Chunks., Shit, if you're good enough, you don't even need to upgrade past +6 or so to kill your way to most of the weapons. Especially if you're willing to degrade yourself and summon for help. The only really tough situations are people who're aiming for rakuyo, burial blade, bloodletter or kos parasite. Being stuck behind DLC/endgame bosses stuff is problematic but it's not like there aren't alternatives for this build that they can use in the meantime. BLT has rifle spear and bowblade. STR has fucking Kirkhammer right away. SKL has a shitload of choice. ARC can convert basically the entire fucking weapon library.

You don't to upgrade, level or gem anything in this game to clear it. The people who are farming gems are people that want to play a specific build with proper gems rather than playing a gimped physical build. Like farming fire gems or BT gems for example.

oh shit forgot about this, sprayer seems to be pretty underrated. If you upgrade it as the same right as your other weapons and use bone ash, you can take out any boss weak to fire by just walking around it and holding l2 lmfao.
