Prolonged exposure to anything that induces Frenzy also causes rapid, continuous HP drain that stops when you break line of sight.

Having insight lowers your fenzy resist so that you frenzy faster, and also lowers your beasthood so that you can't get benefits as large from BBP and shit.

You notice how whenever you drop some insight in the shop, your frenzy and beasthood meters pop up on screen? That's because it's making the bars larger and dropping whatever your old minimum was to the new minimum.

Frenzy is a terrible mechanic made worse by the fact that Sedatives don't work like they should by preventing Frenzy buildup for a short duration and the fact that it continues to build up even after breaking line of sight or killing the goddamn enemy.

LHB really only has an advantage against medium-large enemies, which it can stagger in one hit. Brick trolls, church servants, etc.

Cleaver is better DPS vs. very large enemies (Cleric Beast and the like), not to mention is more flexible in attack timings. Some gaps in an enemy attacking that are too small for LHB to get a hit in, are small enough for a cleaver to get a hit in.

Vs. medium to small enemies (basic yharnamites, dogs, etc.) Cleaver is also better if you're gud because its speed lets it control groups a lot more easily.

With LHB, you have to be careful with how you swing at groups of enemies. It's really easy to swing at a group, miss one of them, and then eat shit because the LHB is too slow for you to do another R1 or dodge away before you get hit.

Cleaver, meanwhile, allows you to swap between targets really easily, and its L1 is a fast, on-demand area swing that can chain into a tricked R2 for more area coverage when you need it. LHB L1 attacks suck, so you don't have that same ability to easily switch between fast attacks and area attacks that make Saws so amazing for crowd control.

Tricked LHB also just has such a fucking stubby swing animation. Your character holds the blade so close to their body. It really doesn't have as much range as you'd expect it to have by looking at it.

Saw Cleaver / Spear are insane weapons and can carry you through the entire game easily.

The main thing Ludwig has over them is the stagger. The 2H will stagger many larger enemies in one hit, while weapons like Bloodletter need two hits to stagger.

Also of course Ludwig is capable of reaching absurd damage per hit. So if you are playing extra cautious and only can afford to get 1 hit in before dashing out again, Ludwig can win in that regard too.

But as you can probably see in many speed runs, Cleaver/Spear are more than enough to mow down everything in PvE eaisly.

That's the saw spear, you can get it in Central Yharnam by chopping a corpse down from some rafters. It's similar to the saw cleaver, but has a different transformed moveset, and scales more with Skill than Strength.

Anybody got any advice on NG++ Micolash? He never gave me much trouble in NG and NG+, but I simply can't take a hit anymore. Auger takes 90% of my health and once he decides to call 1-800-BEYOND I'm finished. I'm completely forgotten how to avoid that attack. Not even the Loch Shield seems to help

I've heard the Spear is more versatile, it's got the quick attack speed like the Cleaver untransformed, and better range transformed with a wider sweep and transformed R2 deals thrusting damage. They're both fantastic but there's pretty much no situation the Spear won't excel

In any case, they're two of the strongest weapons in the game, for both PvE and PvP.

Stay close to him and play passive. When he goes for augur, you should be able to dodge on reaction so long as you aren't already in the middle of doing something, which is why you play passive. Problem: he will punch you, and that's hard to avoid on reaction. Fortunately, his fists don't do too much damage. If he's punching you a lot, just back up a bit, but not too far. There's a certain range where he likes to cast Augur. If you're getting low on health, only use a vial after dodging Augur. As long as you don't get too far away, he shouldn't use ACB, but if he does, immediately shoot or attack him. If you're close enough and can react quickly, you should interrupt him. This, btw, is why you stay close always. He'll spam ACB if you're far away, so DO NOT run away to heal.

So is there any benefit to hoarding insight besides seeing weird stuff sooner, or does it only result in weaker beasthood and lower frenzy resistance?

I still don't understand why people use guides on first playthrough, it doesn't give any sense of acomplishment to me and it's like they want to finish such a good game as fast as posssible just to brag about something thay didn't do by themselfs.

The flat 80 damage boost of the Fire Paper is significant enough to make most of that grinding worthless.

A 54% damage boost on a +6 Saw Cleaver (144 damage before scaling) would be 77.8 which isn't a terribly large difference.

Most of the Saw Cleaver's attacks have a negligible AR multiplier, but if you're using transformation attacks for the 1.3x multiplier that's still only (144+77)+30% for 287 per attack before scaling and defense ratings with a flat 80 for fire paper added on for a total of 367 per hit.

The +4 saw cleaver, doing this same basic math, would do approximately 164 damage + 80 for fire paper totaling 244 per hit.

6 hours of grinding for a difference of 123, or approximately 50% more damage.

If you'd used a stronger weapon and higher AR multiplier attacks (Kirkhammer R2s for example) the difference would be much more dramatic.

tl;dr
the damage difference is mediocre at best because you're working with low base numbers. If you want a percentage difference to create a more palpable gap, use stronger weapons.

Found the game surprisingly easy except for that Bloody Crow of Cainhurst guy but I read you could kill him with poison daggers so I used 3x moon runes to farm pigs to buy poison daggers and killed him that way. Currently level 110. I got to gerhman an hour and a half ago but spent a good 45 minutes on Orphan of Kos.and another half hour on Laurence (i ended up summong Valtr)

Do you spend an hour or so painstakingly making a cute character? Maybe even spending that same time trying to think of a name. Do you imagine a build before hand or do you just think of it as you go along?

Do you clear the main game as fast as possible and then rushing DLC or do you enjoy mixing in dlc and chalices between segments in the main game?

Does a coin flip and an emote after you killed someone during an invasion piss most people off? I'm not getting any hate messages and I kill tons of them without waiting for them to finish their fedora tipping gesture before a fight.

Just farm Lumpy gems in Lower Pthumeru layer 2. They're better than Mensis gems and can be obtained before Amelia, around 20% Phys. Adepts can drop too that go a little higher but the droprate is low so just stick to the Phys gems.

Oh okay, I doubt there's a guide for that. People are mainly interested in end-game gems which is why Lumpy/Clarence were kind of a big deal. You could try looking at top tier gems from certain enemies and find them in lower Depths, they tend to drop the same kind but lower quality.

Sadly there are no reliable sources of anything except Physical and Fire in the early chalice dungeons. Lumpy drops all kinds of gems, but Physical % make up 90% of his loot pool. It might be placebo but I feel like Chalice Knights drop more interesting gems more often, but since it's uncursed and have secondaries they are garbage and Litterally half Lumpy gem values. If Amelianon's theory of flaming weapon = cursed gems is true, then Flaming Weapon Knights might be interesting to farm if you can find one.

Pickaxe Guys also apperently drop cursed gems in non cursed dungeons. Droprate sucks though and so do thier gems.

Ghosts drop pretty good ATK on low HP gems, but the droprate sucks and I honestly have no idea what a depth 3 gem would look like % wise, I doubt anyone has ever bothered to farm for one.

Glyphs are online content, so you aren't being gated.

Just run through the story dungeons, collect the root chalices, and make a Isz F/R/C chalice. You would need to do that either way. Then you can get one month of PS+ to get the glyphs if you want.

You could still use the Saw Cleaver in a Skill build, a bit less damage but if you prefer it there's nothing stopping you. Doesn't matter in an Arcane build though.

tbf I do not think I've ever seen an Any% current patch that is 100% optimal. I don't think there is currently one that makes use of:

-Forbidden Woods elevator skip
-Byrgenwerth statue skip
-AND Micolash OOB

And using these skips would require some amount of re-routing other areas, probably.

Also IDK if there is an all bosses speedrun that makes use of the Nightmare Frontier elevator skip. And there's probably some stuff I'm forgetting.

You can get almost-equivalent damage instead by just attacking over visceral assuming no claw-mark runes are involved. Still less, but not an extreme gap.

It's how BL4's are still able to pump out damage even without low skills. Paper+Pellet is all you need
