It has the same problem that giants have. Big minions that control decks can dump for cheap aren't interesting or innovative, they're just a competency check for good players.

They ask themselves 'did I win already through aggro?' or 'Was I smart enough to save removal for my opponent's core cards?' and if the answer is no to both, they should just concede on the spot.

The Elder Scrolls™: Legends is a free to play card game where you can choose between 5 colors and mix two of them, which creates an unique playstyle between those combinations. You have 30 hp and 5 runes, which break each time you take 5 damage (but once, so if you get hit from 30-25 and heal back to 30, you won't get a rune break at 25) and gives you a card, which you can play for free if it has a "Fate" keyword . A better comparison would be to the second best legendary of any class since Tony is obviously better than Rhonin. So Rag Lightlord is an 8/8 that stalls out the game and can trade infinitely in theory if not removed. Rhonin is a 7/7 for the same mana value that gives you 3 combo pieces for a potential win condition on his deathrattle.

They fit into different styles of play but Rhonin is a fine card. You're paying 1.5 mana for the "Add 3 Arcane Missiles to your hand." effect, which is perfectly reasonable and mage has enough stall and removal to reach a point in the game where they can pay a slightly below tempo 8 drop to close out the game the next turn with a Tony triple missles combo.

Cards have to be balanced around "What if it works?", if you balance every card around a worse case scenario anything that's more than 5 mana or less than double mana value on board would never see constructed play.

Mages have too much removal for that to matter much. All it would do is stop Shaman and Hunter aggro decks from burning face, and they're largely minion based anyway.

One 6 health minion with spell taunt isn't going to stop a freeze mage lethal turn, nor will it stop a tempo mage from pinging your face 40 times in one turn.

That's because aggro is fundamentally impossible to counter in hearthstone.

In a midrange or control metagame Mage is the only playable class. It's worse than Shaman because they're the only class with anti-spell effects so they beat spell based combo decks, they have polymorph effects so they beat big late game minion win conditions even if they're deathrattle based, they have more burn than any other class at a lower mana to damage ratio. They have minions with built in synergy and the capacity to board clear and redraw their entire hand with more ease than any class but warlock, with overall much higher card quality than warlock.

Mage decks beat every other combo and control decks when played properly, they just lose harder than any other combo and control decks to aggro with the exception of Freeze Mage which is never going anywhere.

I don't think there's ever been a time where tempo mage has been oppressive on the metagame

It's a lot more likely now that his ability turns itself into "do nothing" than before though. It was always possible to get junk spells on do-nothing targets, but now that Yogg can end up self-terminating through a variety of methods, it's much harder for him to have a large impact on the board. You have to add into consideration how he's a 10 mana 7/5 so he's just not worth having unless his Battlecry will reliably have a big impact.

Mage has more options for AoE than any other class in the game.

It's actual class minions don't have weak statlines when compared to classes that don't have overstatted minions due to "drawbacks" either. Most of it's two drops are 3/2 and it has the best defensively statted 1 and 4 drops in the game. It's late game minions have "weak statlines" in exchange for outrageously synergistic game winning effects.

I'll grant you life gain (though it's not even the worst at that), but it also has the best stall and the only ways to protect against direct face burn in counterspell, spellbender, animated armor, and ice block.

warlock, priest, warrior, shaman and arguably even paladin all have better aoe

mage has no playable minions that cost more than 3 or less than 7 except for maybe water elemental which is cut from almost every deck though
antonidas is the only good big guy and while good he's inconsistent
more importantly though, come to think of it, is that renolock gets away with greedier decks because of better draw and board clears with more big neutral minions like giants
and jaraxxus is the ultimate value card control mage can't beat

ice block is an excellent card though and the only reason reno mage is sort of relevant though
the ability to go all in and be super greedy at 5 health is something renolock envies and cna't do

Tinkmaster is legitimately good in control mirrors as a makeshift neutral polymorph.

He contests an empty board against a single big late game threat. You just need to play him when they drop a bomb so big giving turning it into a 5/5 is still more valuable than letting it be.

In that situation, which is more common than you'd think, he's a 50/50 to instantly flip the board in your favor. Particularly effective in Golden Monkey mirrors.

Depends on the deck you play against. I don't think the main draw is the secret effect itself being good, look at it as a bonus and consider it when costed at 0. It's the tempo you get and the fact that you can activate Valet and buff Mana Wyrm. You don't even necessarily do this on turn 1. Counter spell will pretty much always do something good. Poly potion is not bad even on 2 depending on what deck you play against, like hunter for example. And Image is pretty solid.
I think it's a big deal just because it's so cheap and because of Flamewaker. I'm not necessarily saying you play a secet deck or play all the afformentioned secrets or anything, just mentioning examples. But a better variant of Tempo might now exist.

reno mage is a pretty flexible deck imo, and you don't necessarily need a lot of legendaries to make it work. just as long as you have survival/stall, sustainability (card generation/draw), plenty of removal and AoE, and a win condition (which can be a number of things, from antonidas + a shitload of fireballs, to stalling and playing elise, to n'zoth) then it could work

a lot of that can probably be done decently on a budget too, given mage's high-quality basics

in any case, I'd probably wait until after MSG before you start spending dust. at the moment, I don't think anyone really knows what the perfect post-expansion reno/kabal decks will be

Not really, it shuts down "this card will be good no matter what my opponent does" shit. Big cards in HS that see the most play are things that have an instant effect on the board or a guaranteed payoff, shit like Rag Daddy, The Russian, and big deathrattle shit.

Mirror entity gives the opponent a chance to remove it or trade into it before you get as much, or any, real value out of it. With this, if they can't play aorund it the minion is sheeped. It shuts down the deathrattle, it prevents the end of turn proc, nothing, nada, they play an 8 mana 1/1.

That is, from a tempo perspective, a lot worse than playing an 8 mana Rag and giving your opponent a Rag as well because yours will trigger first, you have the initiative. What good is initiative when you just played a 6-8 mana sheep?

Yes but even then imagine they drop a high mane and trade into it when it gets mirrored. They'll have to trade their board into it and next turn you have a full mana turn to deal with it while they had to deal with your entity which costed you only 3. If you have a poly then the high mane gets countered but they still have their board to hit you with.

At worst mirror entity will put a "must kill" minion in your board which will throw a wrench in their plans for that turn since they'll have to deal with it. At best they won't be able to contest it and you'll get to use it fully next turn.

You're right that MI is always going to be better against midrange hunter though now that I think about it. I still like poly over MI for Tirion and Rag though, so I think it's better in control vs control but in matches like that it'll be harder to get it to land on what you want.

It'll be great against Warrior. Shuts down Grom and Rag completely which is most of the traditional control warrior win condition, especially post monkey. It might be a tool that helps mage compete in the control war that so far is just Warrior vs Priest every expansion.

If sacred trial kills Jaraxxus I wonder if this will too? I hope it actually replaces your hero with a 1 health sheep who's hero power is "Baa!: Gain 1 attack this turn."

This game hit the card bloat/power creep/barrier to entry phase faster than any other card game I've ever played.

I chalk it up to Blizzard finding it very easy and profitable to make a digital card game over other games/soon to be cancelled projects.

I think it's harder for them to just go back and level things out because of the digital format. It's not like a traditional card game in that money spent on cards that become useless or are made obsolete can be considered collectible items. They'd piss off to many big spenders if they ever tried to reel this thing in a bit.
