In my entity-component-system I have a class that pulls components from the entity and caches the results, something like this:

So the System that operates on the data can operate on those tiny chunks of data instead of having to pull the components from the entity every frame...

So long as you're not just mimicking youtube tutorials and understand the underlying concepts I think gamedev can be a useful tool for learning to program.

Today I coded a function to set up random food levels for each tile of the game map, I set up a population class and a function that would allow the player to micromanage how many people are working on what. I finished code for calculating the amount of resources you collect depending on people collecting/territory/technology , and I brainstormed how population growth will work. I set up a system for culture drifting, which causes settlements in different regions to become less like your starting settlement.

I'm pretty new to these threads but a few days ago I came in here asking about how a retard artist can make video game and was given a lot of help to kind of get started.

So I'm that artist that wanted to make animal crossing clone and ended up going with 3D because I can't into 2d art. I've had some experience with UE4 for like importing meshes, skeletons and materials. I've also done some kind of advanced shit like rummaging through a friend's game blueprint to figure out why the fuck his character meshes were stretching and candy wrapping in certain places. Still consider myself a beginner and I have no idea how to code anything outside of Mel script / PyMel.

Anywho, I've been following a tutorial to learn UE4 blueprints and so far have come up with this.

It's not much and it's just player movement in a sandbox that has stairs with no collision, but I plan to iterate on this more. Currently player size and floor texture size is way off.

PS. What kind of lists do you guys make when starting your games? Like I understand movement is the most important thing, but what's next? Also sorry for shit quality webm its my first time be gentle.

I fixed a few final bugs for the prototype. Then I'll upload it tonight. I had forgotten to set bIsDead = false when you respawn, so you were actually invincible until you loaded or entered a new zone. Also I had a copy/paste error that made it so that Expert Alchemy didn't do anything, so tier3/4 potions would still explode until you were a master.

Still contemplating if I want to try to make a little short ~3 minute trailer briefly demoing the core features or not.

Finally had a chance to work some more on this. The little extending strut made the nose gear doors a bit more interesting. That little door where the main strut goes through is actually kind of a bandaid.

My original blocking out of doors had a much longer piece connected to the extending strut. It looked fine while retracted, but once extended it clipped into the main strut pretty significantly. Rather than extending the already longer than I’d like front doors, I just added a tiny little door instead.

I noticed the Tomcat also has a tiny pair of doors in the same spot, and it makes me wonder if that’s there for similar reasons.

I just need to add some small details to the doors and clean up the interior, then I can start exporting animations and get to the cool stuff.

For my purposes this is a pretty big waste of time, but I want to know that I can do this and get it working as well as I think I can. It's more for my own peace of mind than anything else. If I ever decide to add more ships, they'll be much simpler than this because this is a huge time sink.

Fixed up the main menu a bit and put the tutorial on the main menu as well. Now it is split up into parts and hopefully should make more sense compared to the last one. The text/icons get offset to hell but prettying it up is for the distant future. The icons change depending on Keyboard/Gamepad being the last one pressed, and they reflect the current keybinds.

so perlin's noise for something with that many particles is not a very fast calculation. I don't think anyone does that calculation on the fly, instead they place a light source in a container and have several pre-calulated textures they cycle through to provide a firey look. As for generating the textures you want this is a very well-explained article http://flafla2.github.io/2014/08/09/perlinnoise.html, which you have no doubt seen. Once you understand it (what each function does) you can try understanding the original implementation http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/noise/ and his paper http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/paper445.pdf is pretty straighforward too if you are looking for how it is done

once you have it implemented in your language you create a set of points to comprise the look of the fire (for example 9 points on the corners of a square and its midpoints raised) and then do a series of passes recursively where you generate noise between those points with a high amplitude

Also for creating the light and dark parts of a fire you will need to do some research on building colored objects with vertex painting and apply some sort of gradient to that based on distance from the base of the fire or whatnot. Basically GPUs can display gradients for you if you provide what color each vertex is, not any complex shading required.

This will not be easy at all to implement though, I'd say it'd take me at least a few days and I don't know your level of familiarity with object building (i've written more in-depth about this before, how you can build objects into .objs so you might check the archive if you want)
Might just recommend to skip it, unless this is going on your resume or something. If you're in 2d just draw the sprites by hand and if you're in 3d use whatever your engine provides you with, that'd be my recommendation

I think I'll follow your last advice. First I thought it should be a very common problem, and I'll find some good how to-s in a few minutes, but I'm struggling with this problem for a week now. I just wanted to know how could I make some nice, procedurally generated spell effects, for example fire, but yeah, it looks like it's something I should deal with later. One article suggested to use Perlin's noise or some other noise algorithm for fire generation, that's why I asked about that, besides, I thought if I get my head around it I could also use it for terrain generation. I know I said 3D, but I know I would rather do it in 2D, like a sprite which always faces you but gives the impression that it's in 3 dimension.

Hello, here's my latest progress. I've got pretty much all of the mechanics in place except for player health now, but I'm saving that for last. At the advice of some anons from last time I posted, I increased the speed of everything just a bit so the game feels better to play now.

Next I'm going to work on making background tiles and making the foreground be "real" and mask the game screen, instead of just being something I drew onto a static sprite and put behind everything else.

If you are interested in anime models, go google for some MMD models, get an importer and study the topology (blender addons work - export from there if needed).
If you are interested in some game and can't find rips, get ninjaripper and follow the instructions - a bit of cleanup will be needed and some meshes might get damaged but generally the topology will still be intact.

I'm thinking of not doing a traditional inventory. Instead, I think you should be able to hold 1 side arm, and one two handed object. Keys and shit realistic take up no space, so you can hold those for free.

This means that if you want to have a shotgun, you have to put down your rifle. Or if an objective needs a crowbar, you have to drop your shotgun. If you have a two handed weapon and switch to your sidearm, you will shot your sidearm with one hand, and simply hold the other weapon in the other. Your sidearm accuracy will be reduced though. You can drop your two handed weapon and use your sidearm with two hands for better accuracy.

If you're using unity, first figure out how to make a grid of either square sprites or quads.

Next make your character and a function that figures out how many square blocks something is away. (2 up, 3 right) Don't put in obstacles yet or you'll need path finding.

Move your character, if you're using 2D just have the spriterender sorting order be one above what ever your tiles are, or just place the object 1 unit higher than the tiles.

From there the hard works begin, you'll need an enemy, and shooting. Plus you need away for enemies to take damage and die.

When you create your character you get assigned to a random town with a random group of players. You can do whatever you want there but the only way to level up your shits is by practicing a lot. It's already beautifully juiced but here's some more juice ideas off the top of my head. Feel free to use or not use them at your discretion.

There should be some visual feedback that represents the gun pushing back when it fires so that feels like it's seriously blasting.

Wanted to try if I can make clutter that doesn't look like shit. Also lamp can be smashed with sword, but only way to make them fall is to kick them. This is to avoid dropping them accidentally, which I found happening a lot before when sword attacks could drop them.
