You must master his moveset as well, both phases. Punish his non-combo moves and back off before he slaps you for it. He loves to extend his combos at the last second if you're right in front of him or he knows you're moving in for a hit.

Warped Sword's probably a bit too short. I usually tended towards 2H UGS in DS2 so sliding in for a quick R1-R1 slam worked most of the time for Fumey. Not ideally as fast as you want but quick enough for most of his counters. Again, don't get greedy when he staggers, it only means he's about to punish you, same if he sees you try to sippy right in front of him.
I've seen lots of players power up a fire-resist shield but he still eats your stamina.
Roll timing is everything for his "fuck you" moves.

To add insult to injury, even when they made it so the R1 attack pushes you forward, they didn't add that same motion to the L1, so you'll never hit an enemy with it unless you're literally touching them. A lot of things in DS3 seem rushed but the lack of moveset variety will never stop being the most apparent
Also why the fuck can't you get the red cloth armor from these guys, or the robes the hollows in Ash Cemetery are wearing, and why the fuck does the Great Machete look completely different from the band saw they're using, and why do they get horizontal swipes when the player doesn't

I agree with the premise however. Combo weapons are the way to go.

Onikiri & Ubadachi are the best in my experience. I have NEVER seen a phantom live through a L2 L1 combo. Just be sure to wear thorns in case of tears of denial.

The other way to fight ganks is to hornet riposte them with an ultra but that's pretty unreliable. I have had some success with UGS that have a wide swing on their R1 since you can catch multiple players with it. Get them to chase you and catch them with an R1 R1 combo. Works sometimes.

I still don't understand why there are still people who don't do this. The gauntlets really don't look that bad at all and are very light, fit with pretty much everything. I wear the gauntlets for this exact reason. They're not the best looking gauntlets in the game but they're not the worst either.

Also Sun Princess ring is not enough to save you. You'll still die from rolling. Replenishment is sufficient however. Just something to keep in mind.

Any weapon that has decent dex scaling will benefit from a sharp infusion on a dex build.

I don't know where this "everything is quality" meme comes from but just because a weapon scales good with 40/40 doesn't make it a quality weapon. it depends entirely on your stats. Almost all weapons will scale better 40/40 because it's a fucking larger stat investment.

If your stats are 12 str and 40dex then guess fucking what, the uchi would be better infused with sharp. go check on mugenmonkey for yourself.
Don't run a 30/40 build and ask for dex weapons, and don't compare a 40/40 build to a build with a single stat investment like 60 str or 60 dex
