Man, just Akashic Record'd Ulm.

Funny about him beating me on most of the graphs - Provinces, Income (what a stomp) Research (what a stomp), and Dominion.
We're tied in forts.
While I inch out a small lead in gem income - though that doesn't count the Sickle Ulm has iirc, flame spirits (which we both have I'm pretty sure) and Sea Kings.

I don't have trouble being decisive but unless it's one of those wins where you're more powerful than everyone else combined, the process of converting your strength to a victory is really taxing to me.

The higher you are the longer you fall and the risk of losing an almost won but not fully secured game makes me worry about all the possible ways something can go wrong (I enjoy heroic last stands and other losing situations but the fall from grace is torturous as long as it lasts and you reach the point where you're definitely not winning anymore) and there's this pressure to make perfect turns so as not to let the game slip from your grasp but perfectly scripting everything when you're big gets tiresome. And if it's one of those games where you have overwhelming advantage but there's no way to make a decisive throne rush, while not emotionally taxing, it's even more tiresome to grind out the win.

In terms of ability to make dosh, they're very close and there should be basically no major difference between them.

This mean he can make crystal matrices and turn anyone into a communion master with his S2 mages. This is location at province 332. He's also getting free devils from the Devil's Den in 214. Oh, and don't forget the insane pile of gems he's racking up from the Throne of Abundance in province 127.
You want to know who people need to gang up on? Hinnom, frankly, because it's _really_ fucking obvious he's running away with this. He's actively eating other nations as we speak - Lanka's cap is under siege, Kailasa's cap is under siege - and it's just getting worse, and he's really, really obvious angling for Astral Corruption at this point along with mass horror attacks.

Start up a game with EA caelum, recruit first some archers (or use starting army archers) and some mammoths and send them out
archers shoot, mammoths walk forward, all's well
Then recruit a squad of first mammoths, then archers
send them out
the archers will FLY INTO MELEE because the first unit in the squad sets the validity of the fire order

Hi guys, I'm new to Dominions and I had a couple of questions. I've been learning the very basics of the game playing offline against the AI (I know that's not the best thing in the long term but I'm just trying to figure out how everything works) but I'm having some difficulty figuring out what exactly I should do. Whenever I look at guides I find they're usually very general and don't give a lot of specific steps as to what to do. I get some pretty severe option paralysis because it feels like there's an 'optimal' course of action in each situation and I simply can't figure out what it is and I can't look up what it is either. So, two-fold question: are there any sorts of trap options or things that are never or rarely viable? I know the motto of the general is 'it depends' but there has to be something that's a 'noob trap' or whatever. Second question, is there a set of steps that you should follow in every single game, regardless of the faction? I'm talking like really early game. It sort of just throws you in there and gives you a lot of options and I don't know which ones I should go for, besides expanding as much as I can.

Early game guidelines:

Have a basic expansion party that you know can take on most indies. Produce this party from your capital and send it out to conquer indies.

Produce as many mages as you can. Use indie commanders to lead your troop to save fort-turns that can be used to get more mages.

Save up money for an early secondary fort. Best start building before turn 10. Some nations like to start as early as turn 3.

Get more provinces from indies/enemies to get money, get/build forts, labs and temples so that you can spend all the money you have.

Have set research goals that will help you in case of early wars. Example: Alteration 2 and Earth Meld for earth mages.

Send out a mage or two to search for the type of magic site that you will need the most of to power your gem economy.

There's a lot of stuff that really does depend. But I'll try and give you some of the stuff that doesn't.

There are a few things here, but they're mostly nation specific. The prime you need to do is know your nation before you make a pretender for it. The inspector (linked in OP) is useful for this. The sort of pretender you want for Vanheim is very, very different from the sort of pretender you want as Ulm.

It'll take a while to get your head around what exactly the nation you've picked is looking for, but as general rules of thumb: If it has recruitanywhere sacreds, you want to focus on bless. If it has bad expansion, you want an awake expander. If it has national spells your national mages can't cast, you may want to think about a pretender for those. If it's shit is expensive(or particularly resource heavy), you want scales. If your sacreds are giants regen bless (N) is good. If your sacreds are cavalry or elves, quickness bless (W) is good. If your sacreds are subpar but plentiful (e.g. flags), focus on an offensive bless. If you have a shitload of sacred mages (LA C'tis, all Apes), Regen and Reinvig are good for both communion and standard casting purposes.

In general, practice expansion with a nation until you can get ~15 provinces and a fort under construction by the end of year one. If you can do that on an empty map, you should be good for multiplayer. Also don't ignore diplomacy. Fighting one neighbour is way easier than fighting all of them.
