Been doing film theory for about 3 years now and I'm not sure about other universities but mine wants to be hip and offers the chance to write about video games.

So I've only gone SMT 1 twice and 2 once, and probably missed a lot of side missions or whatever else.

Nocturne has a really annoying style of demon negotiations, where they mostly just ask for crap and seldom ask interesting questions or do interesting shit after answering said questions. I, II, Strange Journey and Soul Hackers are better about that, and fusion skill options are more limited so it's less complicated/obnoxious than trying to get the skills you want on demons.

Also remember DDS2 is a direct continuation of the first so move on to that right after finishing it(unless you want to torture yourself with some extra optional fights).

I don't get how people are missing this. Turning in to the wind IS dying. That's why he conflates killing all gods with returning them to their natural forms. Its just that almost all of them but him consider this to be death and barely existence. Similar to whatever humans are like between lives when they return to the axiom. When the gods come back is irrelevant, they don't age, time means nothing to them. Dagda doesn't want to come back at all. When he sees the the new Dagda he just loses it. He sees "himself" relying on others, saying he exists to serve others and being completely defined by others perception of what he should be. Everything he despises coming out of "his" mouth. He wants to die, not there to be another him that represent everything he hates. When Danu tries to argue with him midfight, he doesn't even counter-argue anymore. You're not supposed to know why. His goals are meant to be mysterious. The only real thing you know is that he sides with neutral anything, but seems okay with different neutral paths as long as he thinks they lead to a muh humanity world. But in his dlc it implies that he's guiding them to some kind of even higher path of neutrality.

In the immediate sense he probably sent them to their deaths to make you feel bad. If you replaced the world without seeing anyone it would be too impersonal. Letting you know exactly what you are doing is something he apparently thinks will help give you a mentality that remembers to respect individual humans more.

Its not like its one or the other. You don't just kill fujiwara and skins. You kill hordes of people who all have their own reasons for fighting against you. And when the last ones are called up, it even tells you that everyone else gave up by that point and are just looking down in despair. And only those two are still trying to talk to you seriously. The sheer number of people is to let you know that you didn't just kill a few people close to you, but are killing an entire world, and all the different slants of people in it. All those people obviously weren't together in one place, which means steven appeared to all of them separately and told each of them what you did so that a big combined crowd would show up.

This has a twofold effect. The first is to let you know exactly what you are doing, so that you don't waste the opportunity given you by your position. Fujiwara dies asking why you don't do something good with all your power. That's probably exactly what steven wanted you to hear, hoping that its drilled home to you the bad you did in the immediate sense so that you don't use your position just like an asshole. Killing only your friends is more personal, but too small of scale. Its a small handful of people. Making killing the entire world something that more directly is drilled into you is accomplished by making you fight a huge crowd of mooks.

The second effect is to ensure you give it your all. At the point where all these other people are dead there is now no turning back. If you had doubts at the yhvh fight and there was still a world you can protect to go back to you might think of going back to destroy the egg and been more vulnerable to yhvh shiving you. But now there's really nothing. You've decimated too much of every side as well as trashed their leaders that the world is on the verge of collapse. There's nothing to protect, and so you have no potential things holding you back. Since they'd have died anyways, why not?

Its not made clear, but one reason is because you didn't revive her. That's the reason she gives at any rate. Its not just revenge for her, but to get rid of you in general. You're trying to make a world that actively prevents gods from being able to be born into it. You're essentially fucking over all demons other than the small few who wanted to go back to being wind. Naturally they are going to want to get rid of you and come back with whatever power they can pull together.

I understand that dagda's plan was so stupid that people want to interpret it more open endedly, but the game really isn't allowing you that. You make the new world before dagda leaves, and what's more you agree to his plan before he even tells you that you get to be god. So siding with him in exchange for that right wouldn't have made sense. Your character sides with him since he agrees with his plan. And steven sides with you since you are a neutral character with a neutral slant, albeit a dark neutral one. You definitely can't pull a fast one on steven (And probably not satan) even if you potentially can on dagda.

Trying to say that you can do whatever you want is like taking a chaos end and then saying you used your radical freedom to make a law world. The fact that your character ends as god doesn't really imply any more open endedness than any other ending. Since in any world you can argue that you shape the world in any way you want via whatever means are there. But dagda's ending isn't really all that vague. Though stupid, its alignment system did imply a kind of semi specific slant. And there was definitely a set plan for the new world that you put into practice before he dies. That's why when satan asks you what you want about the new world, both the potential answers were things about it. You can't say "a new world of order" or "a new world of chaos." Because those are implied to be choices your character rejected.

Going in to the game I hoped that the ending was meant to be open ended. The idea that its just about you replacing yhvh to become the new administrator would have been cool. But instead we get an oddly specific yet stupid ending. And its even worse since its one of only two that are both bad, and bipolar to boot.
