Me too But the characters are a big driving force in my enjoyment of an RPG. Nobody in the entire Witcher franchise tickled my funny bone and Bioware hasn't introduced a character that I liked since ME2.

Witcher 3 is great. Just wish the characters would all stop being such huge cunts all the time. As an action game with character building and looting is pretty sub par. It has great variety, no doubt, but Dragon's Dogma handles those aspects much better and is much more enjoyable gameplay-wise.

Obsidian has serious management issues, bickered a lot with Beth and Zenimax, so we will never get a New Vegas 2 and Avellone left back in late May, early June. The convict, the scientist, the cute quirky girl, the mercenary etc.
In The Witcher games most characters have a likeable and an unlikable side, just like in real life, and have some more depth and personality beyond just their one trope.

It's just a different way of storytelling compared to Bioware who focus more on the quirky one-liners whereas CDPR focuses more on gritty realism.
Bit like Marvel vs DC, I guess.

You won't have CDPR characters talk about their life-saving toothbrushes or be all quirky like Sera or Tali.
Just like you won't have Bioware characters casually talking about rape and torture (and showing it) or be all drunk and wife-beating like the Bloody Baron.

I disagree. In ME2, you have Samara talking about how she killed an entire town of innocents, because they believed Morinth to be a goddess of some sort. Mordin engineered a disease to wipe out an entire race, Jack talks about ... pretty much every offense on the penal code. They weren't fleshed out nearly as much as I would have liked, but I liked all three of them.

I think Bioware characters up to and including ME2 had a good basis. You call them tropes, but nowadays everything is a trope. Everything has been done and reused a thousand times before. But you're saying it yourself, flesh them out more and you can make something greater. Bioware falls flat on that. Be it budget or seer incompetence that staves them off, I don't know. You can start a character as a trope, but most of those characters you just named are perfect examples of characters who subverted their trope and got depth added to their personality and their story.

People shouldn't forget that The Witcher games are based on books. Books that pretty much started out as rewriting well known fairy tales in a new gritty and dark setting. From an author who hates everyone.

It's a bit hard to make the characters based on those books into rainbow loving hippies.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age are completely new settings so Bioware has the freedom to create what they want. The fact that the characters they do create are totally cliché and boring makes it pretty sad, but it's also what is the most popular with the masses. Which is what current Bioware is clearly going for.

I'm curious what CDPR will do with a setting that gives them more freedome like Cyberpunk, but given that Cyberpunk is pretty grimy as well I wouldn't expect it to come much closer to the happy and quirky Bioware characters

I liked it more than Leviathan, but I'm a sucker for additional enemy and weapon variety. The characters are not interesting at all (Aria gets even worse) and your squad gets excluded from the action completely for bullshit reasons (unlike the other DLCs, none of them even have new dialogue), but it has some fun gameplay and pretty cool bonus powers. Flare is OP. On the other hand, it's also overpriced as hell for a five year old game's DLC, at $15 for 3 hours of gameplay.

I'd say get it if you're desperate for more Mass Effect, but remember that it's mainly just shooting Cerberus in dark alleys while Aria acts like an edgelord.
