I've been playing the unpatched DaS1 lately, and it's quite a bit harder than the current version. Enemies have more poise and their aggro range is bigger. Silver Knights can't be staggered even by a 2HR1 of Zweihänder and the Batwing Demons can take a Claymore hit to the face without flinching.

What are some fun things I can do unpatched? DWGR is pretty good and there's that Dragonhead dupe glitch, anything else?

Short compared to AotA and ToH; about the same size as Sunken King. The new weapons are excellent. The level design and lore are excellent. One of the bosses is a glorified NPC fight, the other is one of the best in the entire game. I haven't played arena yet, but people seem to be enjoying it.

Oh fuck no, that's not gonna be fun or "epic", that's just gonna be a load of bother and it'll just be stupid to go through all of the phases multiple times to the point where when you're at the last phase you're just skipping the cutscene for each one.

Friede was okay, but having the gimmick of the boss be an endurance match and prioritizing "difficulty" over gameplay mechanics and enjoyability is the completely wrong approach. Sure, you can make a boss "hard" using cheap tricks like inflated hp or depleting the player's resources in the first phases, but that doesn't make them necessarily enjoyable if you know how to mechanically defeat a boss but the boss just keeps fucking you up because they have a ton of hitpoints and you have none.

If you make a boss where you want the player to experience some sort of fulfilling fight and have a cutscene or really cool music, it's going to suffer from unnecessary repetition.

5 phases where you're just going to get all of the 5 phases instead of getting actual progress done when you take down the first 2-3 phases is just going to boil down to dull repetition and any "cool music" or "cool cutscene" is just going to be annoying the more you do it.

Instead you should have a tough but doable boss guarding an atmospheric lead-up to the final boss room like the Allant fight in Demon's Souls. The lead-up could have an NPC or stuff going on in the background or have the game start the music when you enter the final hallway to the boss, then have it culminate in a tough fight where you're doing a short & sweet 2 phase battle, after which the *real* boss appears, but if you clear the first boss, you won't have to do them all over again, instead it'll work like Nashandra and Throne Watcher / Defender.

You probably never played WoW, but in Wrath of the Lich King they had a raid based around a arena gauntlet where a boss enters the arena and you kill it, and then next one enters, and so on until eventually the arena crumbles and you fight the final boss.

Sunken was fucking horrible. Boring, unimaginative enemies, bland environments, barely any fun weapons compared to AoA, all bosses are hilarious trash (Velstadt is the best Sunken boss and that says something, kek). Ancient Dragon is the perfect example of this shit. The boss has like 6 moves it can do, but it has an asston of hp and can 1hko you so if you're not doing a perfect game he can kill you, and that usually means you'll die more to bullshit fuckery like hitboxes working weird than to the actual boss. You know how to defeat the boss but due to the sheer number of hp the boss has you have to repeat the bs mechanics over and over if you make one mistake towards the end and it just sucks. The perfect boss is one that takes 1.5 the time it takes to learn their mechanics, not one that you have to slog through and where 1 mistake in the beginning ruins the entire multi-stage fight.
