I wish the AI took more into account the potential spread of borders instead of spamming overlap and overlap and overlapping cities.

Is overlapping cities bad in civ6?

>>158127874
Overlap's potentially a positive feature in Civ6. As in, a lot of your late tech gives benefits to cities that are close enough to overlap.

anyone else having some serious issues with food?

It seems like 6 with the districts would play similar to the old specialist style but the lack of a civil society tenant equivalent coupled with districts and shit making farmland unusable and very few city buildings that give food makes it hella hard to support a large population.

Domination: Heavy cavalry are op, spam them if you have horses.
If not just go for melee units supported with rams.

Religion: Just get strong faith generation and spam apostles. Very easy although probably tedious on larger maps. Make sure you get the civics from reformed church that makes your apostles stronger.

Culture: Don't bother with tourism until the end, raw culture output plus a resort or two is enough to win

Science: Don't bother unless you just want the achievement, the production costs for the science victory are insane and you could easily win any other victory in the time in takes.

Either place a city where it's got three or four decent bonus resources that will net you food or build a triangle-formation of farms. Once that's done, either build another triangle-formation of farms or use internal trade routes. You can skip a step by making adopting a religion that gives big food bonuses.

That should allow you to support cities that are above 25 in pop.

I'm playing continents with a standard map size, and god damn these continents are way too big vertically, like there's literally no way to sail around them because they reach the top and the bottom of the map, and this is the case with both of them, so the oceans are just glorified lakes.

Does changing map size help with this or should I just play on islands?

People went to cry about XCOM 2 for a lot of minor reasons, most of which could easily be patched out
Also, concerning the normie argument
Civ V and XCOM EU/EW were for many the first they learned about, and probably quite a lot learned only about the games when they were fully patched with all expansions.
They hadn't learned that Firaxis is a slow starter and needs fucking expansions to make their games great

This was taken from one of the developer's livestreams and I think it would be interesting to share.
The 1-2-3 Rules basically goes as follows:
>You need 1 housing for every 1 population.
>You need 1 amenity for every 2 population.
>You can have 1 district for every 3 population.

Good to remember as you are expanding.
>>
>>158131064
Biggest issue with civ 5 was how cities + garrison would always one-shot a unit per turn.

In civ 6 you can attach a couple of battering rams to your melee units and go to town.
>>
>>158133229
Isn't there a malus in civ 6 for having cities with a different culture?
>>

I tried a continents game as America. Pretty fun, but there's no way I can lose now.

Are large islands/small continents still fun in 6?
>>
>>158132615
I had that earlier. Border friction, trying to fix relations, and he tells me to move my army away from him. I do so, and he attacks me a few turns later.

They're set to "occupied" and are basically half as effective until you get the civ you took it from to cede it or just wipe that civ out entirely.
>>
>>158133463
No. AI cannot into navy, so playing on islands is pointless. Pangaea or bust.

Okay, so I did some testing, and I think there is no reason to not settle cities.
As in, you should settle every last spot you can, and continue settling until you run out of land.

The way the happiness works in this game is that the game always gives any new luxury to the city that needs it the most.
Also cities can grow to pop 2 before they need a luxury.

So if you settle a city and keep it at pop 2, it will never use any amenities, and won't weaken your other cities.
You can have literally unlimited amount of pop 2 cities and the only thing they do is make builders, settlers and districts slightly more expensive, which is negated by your growing production.

My unwinnable Civ5 games are isolated rationalism AI, most notably Korea.

In this version winning science or culture is very slow, and winning religion is something the AI can brute force if you aren't a religious power yourself.

Free population, large diplomatic bonus from the race they come from

I would be careful how you go about it though, ethnic divergence has gotten a major buff recently (or I guess nerf?) so pops are far more likely to be divergent than homogeneous which can lead to a lot of segregated pops.

I've noticed in my own game, and in others games posted, a lack of late game strategic resources in cities.

Nigga DO YOU EVEN FUCKIN HISTORY?
The US had no standing army for half its existence.

Until the modern era when enemies became able to full-scale invade you literally overnight, many nations had small or non-existent standing armies and only spent money on military when they had an emergency. They might also employ the draft or conscription or signing bonuses to get a surge of enlistment, train up a bunch of dudes, fight their war, then send most of them home to get back to work on the domestic sphere.

Stationing 1 unit per city, 2-4 in your capital, and maybe littering scouts around during peace is accurate to history. To be more accurate, after you buy/produce a ton of troops for war, you'd delete a lot of them to save cash and put them back to work elsewhere.

So what Civ really needs is an option to retire standard military units for productivity and economic bonuses.

Come on... lets face it lads... its kinda shit...
turn 100 and I'm already bored out of my mind,

and it also means it will ALWAYS act retarded in the same way, game after game, I don't even think that "hidden" angenda is randomized either, completely pointless
district building is a neat stolen idea, but badly implemented, still needs to grow a lot more on it,
they managed to get rid of the worker while still keeping, so for god sake put this shit together
barbarians are fucking nuisance as hell, and they didn't even include a "barbarian aggressiveness" like in every fucking other civ game
the AI blatantly cheats to keep up, I've even spotted AI having nonexisting resources...

It's realistic as fuck and it makes logical sense. Why build military 200 years early because you suspect you may eventually be attacked? Why NOT save resources until you need an army and then surge recruitment?

>>158137802
I know you can. That's why I said "to be more accurate you'd delete units".
But that's a waste of resources because it'd take dozens or hundreds of turns of upkeep to balance out what it cost to make a unit against its upkeep cost.
Therefore, imo, we need a way to retire these units without just deleting them. A way to turn them into, say, an encampment improvement, like "this encampment has +10 defense per unit retired from it" or "you gain production equal to the power of military units retired in a city".

I enjoyed IV more than V too but there's no denying Civ V's success so Firaxis has no good reason not to run with the mechanics that have proven so successful

The problem is most of the things in this post >>158137447 are just whining and frankly dumb opinions, the diplomatic AI/agendas complaint is about the only one that actually matters

Especially that last one, the AI has always cheated in Civ games since the original, but the "nonexistent resource" is probably just a system you didn't understand

why I hate it:
- it gets boring REALLY fast,
- game doesn't challenge you
- fucking terrible mod support
- fucking terrible mp support
- bad gameplay design everywhere

I wanted to like it, but only good thing it had going was the technical upgrade, hex grid and graphics...

Hugely successful games are generally not "the worsts ever", I'm just saying. They might not be for you but I was disputing "the worsts ever" line in particular. Prove it.
The game's called "civilization", you play as civilizations from throughout HISTORY, the game is packed with historic quotes, you trace the evolution of civilization as it develops technologies and policies. Havent played civ since 4, turns out I'm really bad, started a new game on default settings ( prince ) and was already getting fucked by barbarians and behind everyone else at turn 15.

I know the basic tho, but for some reason I cant stick with something and make consistent decisions I think.

so in such a case as pic related, still playing default settings ( prince, random civ etc ), I want to go for warrior or slinger first since making a scout proved to not be good for me last game.
Whatever I chose to build, what tile should I prioritize here ? The one I chose is 2 / 2, but as you can see I have a massive 3 food and a 1 /3.

I feel like I'm always behind the AI in terms of growth, but at the same time I hear good players who always recommend to prioritize hammers ( well, gears now ) all the time right from the start.

Okay sit down for a history lesson. The reason that the military revolution was possible is because the states advanced in their capacity to tax their people. Using this they were able to pay for a large standing army where previously they did not have the capacity to do so. If they could have actually gotten the money to pay for a standing army they fucking would have.

Sources:
War, Wine and Taxes by John V.C. Nye
Sinews of Power by John Brewer
Taxation in England and France 1715-1810 by Matthias and O'Brien, Journal of European Econ. History
The Political Economy of British Taxation 1660-1815 by Patrick O'Brien, Economic History Review
The Rise of the Fiscal State in Europe c. 1200-1815 by Richard Bonney

There is an integral tie between fiscal and military capacity that in the real world, around 1400, began to allow states to purchase standing armies. Civ gives far more control over what goes on inside your society than any state from the past would have had. Any state from the past that could have had the amount of control that Civ gives the players would have chosen to have a standing army, but their lack of a reliable tax bureaucracy prevented it.

Every turn you earn influence points. How much depends on your government type and diplomacy civics.

You automatically earn an envoy once you've accumulated enough influence points, and you can send it to whatever citystate you like.
>>
>>158141483
You remember diplomacy in Civ5? You just sent out money to gain favor. Envoys are like a bag of money you can only use to send to city states. You gain them every time you hit your influence point cap, like with great people. And you gain more envoys each time you hit it the more advanced your government is.

Was that so hard?
Good points. Though still not a settled question. Why did nations long after that point then choose not to have standing armies? Or to have only skeleton crews?
Why did some nations have standing armies before that?
China had relatively modern taxation and bureaucracy in 2,000BCE and prior, but still didn't always have a large standing army.

Supply and Demand. Why spend money on something (a military) when there is no demand (no wars, no enemies, etc)?

> Is a 'suzerain' just the civ that has sent the most envoys to a certain city state?
Yes
>What is the advantage of being somebody's suzerain?
You can move your units in the city state's territory
You can pay gold to temporarily control the city state's military units
The city state will declare war on any civ with whom you're at war
You gain vision around the city state
The city state gives its luxury and strategic resources to you
And finally, every city state has its own unique suzerain bonus that you can see on the city state overview tab

with the new movement system they're probably better than before, particularly on defense. the ai is incredibly incompetent at attacking though, so i dont know how this is in multi, and i also don't know about naval ranged units.

also the observation balloon range bonus stacks, so you can feasibly bombard enemy cities from your own territory. though if it gets to that point you've probably won already

Why is Amplitude the only 4X dev that bothers making factions actually play differently?

Civ's One UU that's relevant for 5% of the game, one UB that's relevant for 5% of the game, and one UA that's trivially relevant all game shit is awful. I'd gladly go back to the era of sprite-based games if it meant devs would go back to making actual content again.

It's harder, but if you work on the quests, quickly switch to advanced governments, and equip diplomacy civics that boost your influence, you can easily get a bunch of city states to yourself

Civs being all the same "with a twist" has long been a staple in civ. Breaking it now won't endear users. Outside of civ Amlitutude aren't the only ones, just the latest. The reasons why it's not done more often are twofold it's harder to make/balance unique factions and some players see it as a downside to effectively having to relearnt the game every time you switch.

For games that did unique factions well check out:
HoMM, AoW, Sots, Soase, GC2, MoM, and others.

I was not the guy you were arguing with. He still hasn't given you any proof. I just wrote that because I was sick of him talking shit without backing up what he was saying.

To answer your question it mostly has to do with threats. So in the case of China where they only had to worry about threat coming from one direction (North) that was relatively less advanced than they were in terms of military organization it was a simple process of protecting a single border. Enrico Spolaore has a good book called The Size of Nations about this.

Other reasons that states did not like standing armies is that generals had a tendency to attempt coups and armies without a target tend to predate upon the countryside of the nation that they are residing in, just look at what the Venezuelan army is doing right now.

As for why some nations managed a standing army before they had the advanced fiscal capacity I don't have a good answer except to say that the historians, economic and otherwise, would probably say that they weren't really standing armies. A standing army is one where the members are professional soldiers and have no other employment, whereas most nations that mustered large armies only did so during the warring seasons and let the soldiers go back home when there could be no fighting.

The primary issue at hand is the difficulty of taxation. People in the past were very poor and so would go to great lengths to hide what wealth they had so that they could not be taxed. Without tax money you can't hire soldiers. So the trick to a standing, year round, army is to find some way to reliably collect tax money. Some states, such as Rome and China, managed to solve this problem early, however in the case of Rome they lost it after a while, which is evidenced by a return to tariff usage as opposed to land taxes that had been used during the height of the empire (see Rise of the Western World by Doug North).

Hey all, I'm coming into this thread cold, but I've been reading some of these lately to get a feel for how Civ 6 is going. I'm going to hold off until at least the first official expansion pack (not a patch). The reason is because they always push out an incomplete game at first.

I'm sure they have their reasons, and sometimes you just need to go live in order to suss out the problem areas. It's clearly not fucking up their bottom line. I'm just done being an early adopter. I have to be more discriminating with my time allocation.

I've been playing since oh... 1991? The original Civ, the one before Civ-net which improved the graphics slightly. I didn't even know the first settler icon was supposed to be a covered wagon. I thought it was some weird owl thing that shat out cities and built roads.

Civ 2 -- countess hours, a really great improvement.

Civ 3 -- Not my favorite, but I bought it when it was new and was super fucking clunky, weird battle rules, I don't remember all the details. But this is when I caught on to their shenanigans.

Civ 4 -- I really loved this version, but I didn't feel it was complete until BTS was out.

Civ 5 -- I had to stop somewhere, so I skipped this one. I know, I lost my Civ bonafides, but a job, a wife, and a kid will seriously cut into your Civ time. Now that 6 is out, I'm going to get 5 and all the patches and expansions and give it a go.

Civ 6 -- I appreciate you early adopters and I remember being so excited to play a new Civ game... and I also remember that disappointment you guys are talking about. It's an incomplete game once again. I can tell from your discussions.

Anyway, Civ on my friends!

They're like wifi boosters, they allow you to run longer trade routes by going through them. And going through them gives extra gold.

Still haven't really found a way to make use of them, since internal trade routes are king and you'll generally be settling your cities in a cluster rather than a line.

Just hull up against one of your shipyards. They're OP and should kill them before they kill you.
>>
>>158151280

>>
>>158151024
Wormholes
Hyperlanes are restrictive.
With wormholes you can make big jumps but their range is limited by the range of your wormhole stations and you can only travel to and from them so if there's no wormholes in the system a ship is in it will need to jump to one and then jump from there to it's destination.
Depending on where you need to go and where you have wormhole stations it might require multiple jumps.

They have long range though, especially in end game. With Hyperlanes you can only travel along certain "highways" so you will definitely be making multiple stops from system to system to get where you need to go and depending on whether your neighbors allow you to go through their borders you might end up blocked off from where you need to go.
>>
>>158150678

Make six or more galleass and a few archers least one scout or horsemen. Hassle your neighbors as you will go to war sooner than expected. Collect gold and experience. Make sure you get everyone to hate each other by paying them to war money. Collect cities with coast, win game. The AI is still terrible and no amount of soldiers will help them.

With the Cassus Belli system and war fatigue it seems like they were trying to do something like Europa Universalis but failed to understand why it works in that game. The whole point of the system in EU is that the cost of being at war are the fact that you're at war, draining money, manpower, and fucking up your economy with sieges/blockades and other penalties, diplomatic penalties come in after the war if you take way more that you have a claim to or if you conquer too much too fast, and even then, your staunchest allies will sometimes stay by you. In Civ 6 (and 5 honestly) just the act of going to war regardless of your goals means that everyone hates your guts, while your country and economy are basically fine outside of an anemic amount of amenity loss.

It basically means that unless you're specifically going for a military victory, the player avoids war as much as possible even when it may be in their best interest, since one war can be enough to start a mass denouncement/DoW chain, and that's all on top of the fact that the way agenda's work makes it so that the AI almost always hates you anyway. The diplomatic side of this game needs some serious work.

District costs increase as your number of techs/civics increase. When you start a district it locks in the hammers.

If you want to min/max, start building/lock in all districts you can to lock the hammer cost in. Then just complete it later. You'll save hundreds of hammers this way.

I think what really kills this game for me is the Tech tree, It doesn't make any sense, and now that I think about it neither does the Civics tree.

It's so dull that I can't even make it past the Renaissance Era because the progression is so odd. And don't even get me started on Religion, with those horrible Pantheons and beliefs. I love the districts system and the religious combat, they added some really great stuff in here. But despite improving a bunch of game mechanics they really dropped the ball on progression and rewards.

>>158153581
I just typed up a huge list for you in the /v/ thread but the thread 404'd before I can post it. I'm not gonna retype it all in the same amount of detail, but...

>set your cities on production focus, and just manually assign your citizens as needed. This is because setting it to production focus cheats the way the game calculates yield points and will give you extra production

>settling a new city on a resource will give you that resource as if you had improved the tile once you have the tech for that resource

>There's a page in the diplomacy panel that tells you what social policies other civs have. This is useful for seeing what they are trying to do, and more importantly, gives you an idea if it's safe to devote production towards a tree specifc wonder. If nobody but you has a certain tree unlocked, then obviously nobody can beat you to that wonder

>pillaging heals your units, so in a war where your units are in foreign territory, this may be worth doing at times, especiallly with mounted units which have extra movement points

>you may be able to pay a civ you can tell is about to invade you to go attack somebody else via a trade to buy yourself some extra time.

>the amount of money a civ offers you in a trade or that they say is what they'd want for stuff you are selling isn't nesscarily the max they'd pay. If they offer 5 gold per turn, try changing the 5 into a 7. Note that while this doesn't affect your relationship for them, they will be less flexiable the more they hate you

>Likewise, if a civ is acting friendy towards you in terms of their leader animations/language and the diplo modifiers, but they are giving you shitty deals/trade prices, then chances are they are actually only putting on a facade and will backstab you

>>
>>158159254
why?
>>
>>158159017
civ 5 had a different happiness system entirely. Extra copies of a luxury resource would not give you anything at all so it was better to trade them away for one copy of a resource you didnt have.
>>158159175
we were led to believe by many people (except the devs themselves actually) that having multiple copies of luxury resources are still helpful. They aren't. They dont do anything so you can freely trade them away.

So basically yeah, luxury resources work exactly the same as in civ 5.
