Continuing from this, there are a few things I want to compare between 5 and 6

>time it takes to produce units
It feels like it takes less time in six, which makes having a military and going for domination a lot more viable
>tile size of every map
I'm playing on a standard continents map and it seemed like the map I was on was incredibly large compared to Standard in Civ 5
>turn number for different speeds
A lot of this has to do with the scale of the game. I think they got a better grasp on it in Civ 6 it feels like, but I'm not too sure.

If the maps are bigger and the units are cheaper, then Civ 6 is definitely better than 5 because it did what 5 tried to do better by making 1UPT actually work (though it also altered it by adding in corps)

Barbarians are fucking insane and will fuck your shit up all day every day.

The AI is an upgraded version of barbarians that will inevitable chain denounce you followed by gang rape bandwagon surprise wars in the ancient era, assuming they survive the initial barb rapings.

Warmonger penalty does go down and you can even watch it decay. I declared a formal war on Gilgamesh to grab an unescorted Settler I found with a Scout (he'd denounced me some turns before), and I was hit with a -24 for warmongering by the world (everybody but Vicky is denouncing me now). Not sure how many turns it's been- more than 10 because I can try to peace out, but I'm still at war but I haven't taken any cities or anything.

I haven't had a game where one AI was a clear leader in one objective and not also first or close second in all others.
Even the successful early warmongers always end up top religion, science and culture dogs.

Nice fucking meme dude. The AI spawned a horseman, a slinger, and two warriors before turn 15.

And that was just one camp. There was another one north that spawned 3 warriors. I ended up re-rolling. It's a complete RNG shitshow whether you get fucked by barbs or not.

Maybe on Epic or Marathon speed and on very big maps, you can get very close to what the devs intended. A long, tactical experience where every move matters and militaries are used and upgraded properly

Things go so fucking fast on Standard there's no use even producing a military beyond the Slinger > Bow > Xbow > Field Cannon tree, at which point you one shot scouts and can defend cities easily

There's only four victories. Science, Culture, Domination, Religion

Most civs are geared to pursue at least two victories

Shit-tier civs are usually geared towards Domination and unoptimal Culture (France and their underwhelming wonder bonus, England and their Museum joke)

God-tier civs have good early agression but are actually geared towards Culture and mass Science on the long run (Scythia, both Greeces, Aztecs, Rome)

>>158109971

People can already win on Deity as long as they do the right mix of killing neighbours and keeping up with the AI's retarded bonuses to prevent runaways, but it's about as fun as having a fit of liquid diarrhea on stage

I'd rather have a comfy game that I'll win because I'm not retarded, but that I won't win because I had to abuse every single thing at my disposal or restart ten times to get a start that isn't awful

I think straight up murdering the AI quickly before it gets a tech advantage that makes it impossible is critical in Civ VI

In Civ V you could build tall and optimize yourself to victory while the AI shat cities all over itself and ruined its economy with unit spam

In Civ VI, the AI actually uses the free shit it gets properly, so if you don't knock up and absorb one AI or two you are fucked

>>158110330

Yes, plenty

I don't know if there's a version history somewhere, but Civ V has gotten a LOT of balance patches over the year

Rarely standalone content, but balancing all around. I think Tradition/Liberty got tweaked like 5-6 times over its history

>>
>>158110447
From what I hear from this whiny baby general people will reset for a plethora of reasons until their start is perfect and their enemy's is the worst.
>>
>>158110425

Well, if anything the game is more geared towards the AI's stupidity

Maintaining a proper late game army is so costly you'll rarely get to cash in your advantage, wall defenses are horribly strong against everything until you grab Cannons and Frigates and wide play is now the new meta, something the AI is very good at

The AI also often steals all the good spots, and rarely compete between each other unless they have a massive advantage so runaways run away even quicker

>>158110447

The choice is often +2/+3 versus 0

It's quite possible and worryingly common to not find a single spot to theme your campus, forcing you to build commie blocks with your districts to try and engineer yourself a boost

This gets a bit less bad with libraries and forcefully tasking civvies to it, but it can still make the difference. Early science advantage means early science snowballing, and it goes quickly from here
>>

And then they will whine about how bad the AI is and how they roflstomped.

Here is my unoptimized casual setup with 2 mountains, both far away, and the holy site stuck in the best position. And the natural wonder I couldn't even settle because the yields there are trash and its stuck in a small inner sea.
This is more or less a worse case scenario, and I am leading in tech comfortably, on King difficulty, which is what all the people complaining play, or even more.

You don't need everything to be 100% perfect to compete. People restarting until perfection are later going to complain they aren't having fun, and I can only pity that.
Mountains are strong, but their existence or lack doesn't define games. if you don't have mountains in range, you have something else instead, horses or rice or whatever, play differently, expand or conquer into better land.

It's something that came with Heinlein. It may or may not be triggered while you play, and depends on what FEs are present.

The first thing you have to do however is to cause one of the FEs to awaken - these are as far as I know an actual crisis happening, one of the FEs get attacked and beaten, or someone starts getting too strong. The domino effect depends on which FEs are present at the time. In my case, the Xenophobe FE awoke and then launched an attack on the Xenophile FE, which caused them to awaken as well to fight back.

Scout into slinger.
After that depending on your land and barbs, either another slinger, or builder.
Delaying monument is fine.

If there is a city state nearby, building 3-4 slingers and upgrading to archers, or building straight archers, and taking it, is a good choice.
With no resistance and no destroyed buildings, and probably capturing a builder, its pretty legit.

Civ 6 is actually a better developed Civ 3 in the growth department.

>Civ 3
Few core cities around your capital will form the bulk of your civ's income/production, settlers are always cheap, reason new cities after them will not work is because they all become increasingly worthless due to corruption (except for purposes of denying the AI the territories/claiming luxuries)

>Civ 6
Your first few cities will tend to be the more productive where you build your districts, later ones are increasingly more expensive and typically will not have the time to build up their districts. They still can be productive, they just don't get to do develop the same districts your core cities do but at least they are not becoming net drains on your income with markets etc costing maintenance to multiply 1 (one) gold per turn not eaten by corrupt governors.
>>
>>158111715

The Great Wall of China would be good if it gave something in the line of :

Fort improvements :

>Damage per turn for every enemy unit adjacent to it at turn end
>Permanent ZOC on all adjacent tiles and on own tile

Yield improvement :

>Base culture and GG/GE yield when worked
>Tourism yield after Renaissance era, with adjacency-based bonus
>Appeal boost

This makes it an absolutely colossal obstacle for opponents the whole game, and only solvable by late game artillery/bomber pillaging

It also gets a BIT useful for yields, but you want to put it on dead/border tiles

Okay, so make it give +1 culture, and additional +1 for every wall next to it.

I actually like the parchment fog of war effect, though I think it needs a bit more contrast between unrevealed parts and just "fog of war" (especially at some times of day like twilight hours) , and probably some more visible color in the "fogged" areas, but the minimap really should not have the same effect on it.

Let it always be in full color (besides the unrevealed parts), that would be a lot more readable.
>>
>>158112124
I wish the map would update itself with eras. Charcoal on parchment in the ancient era, pen on parchment in classical era, pen and parchment with a splash of color in the medieval era, watercolor in the Renaissance, classic globe look for industrial, like a road atlas for atomic era and then blurry satellite imagery for modern and beyond

Am I the only one who just doesn't bother with a scout? I just go Builder - Slinger - Slinger or sometimes Monument

I'd rather have another slinger than a scout. They don't scout well until they get a promotion which is pretty long unless you take the double exp civic, you're unlikely to beat other civs to more distant huts/city states with them anyway and a random eureka is kinda middling when I could just go get my eureka for Archery/Bronze Working etc and go trash barbarians and weak civs.

Also enemies build spies and send them after you, so you have to repair districts if you don't counter spy.

Its an okay minigame, another thing to manage, much more involved and much less impact than stealing or failing to steal some high tier tech to rush the wonder it unlocks or whatever.

To elaborate on this, Greece (Gorgo) was being a bitch to me. I decided to declare war and liberated two city-states, took one of their cities for myself and razed two more to the ground leaving them with only Sparta.

Two turns later they wanted to be friends because I'm a 'true Spartan'

If you so like, unlike many others, and much unlike most people of our age, growing up on shorter messages, and never being themselves short of other stimulation, from their phones or televisions, and having not been taught to read the classics from a young age, during which our minds, and indeed out future preferences, are being molded, much like the artist molds the clay in his hand, to create the perfect sculpture, as is his craft, and if he is of the skill, I recommend you also read, as you would enjoy it greatly, for it is much like the style discussed previously, the works of Gogol, who is one of the lesser known classics, still part of that elite, but not of the very top creme of it, despite his ability, and of Chekhov, for the same reasons, as he is in the same situation, everyone being aware of his excellence, but people delaying his works for the other, more excellent of the excellent, the curse of being number eleven in a top ten list.

Actually out of all the russians, I only liked The Master and Margarita. The rest kill me with their kilometer long sentences and I eventually quit.

Absolutely false, they offered me great works, luxuries, money, even cities I didn't conquer. Just kill their units, raise their war weariness by prolonging the conflict, and they will fold.

Also the "demand" option actually works in this game, if you have an army near and are stronger, you can demand shit and the AI will occasionally comply.

Overall the way they calculate "is he stronger than me" in this one is better than the last one.

So if you see 6 apostles coming, have your own 7-8 apostles and in the end the heresy will be removed and your cities will be 100% yours religiously.
Also use inquisitors.

It seems fate is funny at times. When the ultimatum finally came from the two awakened empires to join them or die, I decided to choose neither, thinking at least some of my federation members would do the same. I was wrong - they all preferred to join one side of the War in Heaven.

Then came an offer from the big fat empire that caused the awakening in the first place, who had been my rival for years - and now we're friends, just us two independent empires against the not only both the awakened empires but also their new subjects covering the entire galaxy, plus maybe one extra independent empire that decided not to join anyone at all.

Wot?
It was hard to get the science victory without basically getting a domination victory and pretending to get a science victory. I legit got a science victory with as little investment in military as possible. The trick is luxuries. If you have luxury items then the AIs will prefer to keep trading with you and declare war on others. Ofc, you have to play diplomatic with their agendas too. Also, it's impossible to get a legit science victory unless you basically get every single one of the last great people from like the modern era onward.

Now there's a reason for me to minmax.
just grabbed the image off reddit, I'm sorry

There actually seems like challenge now, picking ironman for cheevos seems like an actual cheevo now. A shame the midgame is still dry and boring.

On that topic, what's everyone's fleet setup?

I got terrible cards and was running Kinetic plus armor, with a little bit of shielding for some buffer health.
It seemed to be okay, and minmaxing weapon modules seems fine. It's the specifics of the different chassis roles that I'm confused about now.

You need niter to upgrade Legions to musketmen, and niter is very scarce. You also need it to build cannons, so it's not surprising to see something like this. I don't know why Firaxis made strategic resources so rare, but that's why AI doesn't upgrade it's shit. Unique units not requiring resources is the only reason why Rome even has Legions and not just basic Warriors.

Uhhh anon.. The production cost for a space win is insane. You need 3 mega-cities with maximum production before the atomic age if you even want to have a chance. Also, you need the last three great engineers and the last three great scientists. One of the engineers practicality gives you a free mars component.
>>
>>158121314
Oh yeah, there's call to eliminate fuckers for sure. It's just that in singleplayer you can go economic boosts and field a big enough army to do whatever you want anyway.
It's only against other players that you need every boost to military that you can get.

I'm almost expecting a crisis to happen soon, since I'm about to get to that time and there's now two awakened empires flying around with their jump drives. An entire galaxy in turmoil, and the crisis rolling in sounds perfect.

Actually it does. If you have a negative ethics divergence and absorb a race that is against your ethics they will convert over time. Its how you're supposed to take over new races and maintain the peace, although now you need a shitton of it because the further from the capital they are the more divergent they are.

I was wondering about this too actually, but considering how stylized the art style is I kind of doubt they could make it work.
But to answer your question, so far it seems like everyone has a completely unique unit visuals until you get to musketman, and then it's just skin/paint color that changes. Hopefully they add more unit diversity (The only diversity I give a shit about) in later DLC or even, dare I say it, patches.

It was harder for me to go wide in 6 than in 5 sometimes, mostly due to city placement being a lot more important now. In 5 you could settle for any lux as long as you had space around you, while in 6 you need to consider a lot more things, like fresh water, adjacency bonuses and so on.

The AI rarely actually builds boats. They just embark their land units and pretend it's a navy, which results in then merrily suiciding dozens of units into one or two actual ships. It's beyond ridiculous.
