I can't believe people actually donate money to him.

So is that bug where things born in your fortress never actually grow while growing up fixed yet?
>>

Why should i care about some abstract "new players" and assume what they want and how they ?
I care about myself and my convenience. I enjoyed getting into the game as it is now.

And you know, there is no limit to human stupidity, i've seen people ask dumbest questions about simple and basic things in very "newb-friendly" games.

> and it certainly didn't grow even half as much as it should have.
Who the hell are you to decide how much it "should" grow?
>>
>>157943283
Yeah it fixed but you gotta contribute at least $100 to get the FPS fix patch, chop chop!
>>
>>157943512
nah, rather just play rimworld. It will have far more features that actually work. Sure DF has dark fortresses and kings and stuff, but you will never experience it because 2-3 fps is unplayable.

Its good that illumination will be handled eventually. This could also be a way to expand on temperature and flammability. I would like to make boiling oil traps or combustible items and then be able to ignite the area.

Also, Spreading fire or unsafe behaviors around fire should become one of the biggest threats to a fortress. Much like they were in medieval times. Could you imagine a dwarven sprinkler system set in an above floor and able to do controlled or compartmentalized flooding in case of fire

Yeah, I have felt for some time that, in all its precise detail, all materials lack any chemical property such us flamability, acidity, and many more I can't list without looking at a text book
Man, only for having fire and more temperature-oriented stuff, you'll have to add burning energy outputs for each material(Wood liberates less energy than coal, for example)
The main two reasons I want realistic fire anyway are for burning people/fortresses down
>>
>>157946580
>Spreading fire or unsafe behaviors around fire should become one of the biggest threats to a fortress
Maybe if you're doing wooden aboveground fortresses. Stone forts, which is probably most forts, shouldn't be at any particular risk to death by fire. Losing a booze stockpile or a cloth stockpile maybe, if someone were juggling torches near your silk farm or something like that. Outside of beds, though, most of the structure and furniture of a stone fort isn't flammable.

I've suggested some in the general:

>have some animal people form entities which become affiliated to elven civs
>improved climbing mechanics and making walking up hills more challenging, in order to make mountaineering more fun

One I haven't mentioned is the following
>make all map tiles init-definable
Or better yet:
>make every single tile in the game init-definable
This would make tileset making much more rewarding, and totally eliminate the need for shit like TWBT.

You could use turkeys or other egg-layers for the majority of your food production, supplement that with some livestock or puppy-mills, throw in some hunting and fishing and you'll have plenty of food.

Booze production would be more difficult but you could get by with buying all the booze you can from caravans and brewing any plants / fruits you gather.

You should be able to buy plenty of cloth off the caravans and, along with a meat/leather industry and gathering spiderwebs for silk, keep your dwarves properly clothed.

Are the material values for wool the same as the material values for hair in material_template_default?
The wiki is remarkably unhelpful in my efforts to determine whether various wool clothes or various pig tail/rope reed clothes would be more protective. I know it's a marginal benefit either way, but I don't have a lot of better options right now and I need to make a bunch of new clothes for my dwarves anyway, so I might as well take the option which is slightly better.

Soil layers are good for growing underground crops. There also could have been a cistern connected to that stream. But instead it's all just featureless brown, not even any stratification. The artist could have drawn the top 1/8th or so of a hallway or something at the bottom of the picture to indicate that there's more of the fortress underground that isn't being shown. Or just thrown a few gems or something in there, just SOMETHING to show that there's stuff of interest underground.

Atomcrash excess stone if your megaproject involves mostly excavating. Leopards follow the same AI as most other wildlife. They enter the map, meander about in a general direction, and eventually try to leave the map, usually on the opposite map edge as the one they entered on. Like most other animals they'll usually run when they see a dwarf, though you'll occasionally get a brave one that will attack lone dwarves. They don't stalk, stealth or ambush dwarves or any other creatures, no wild animals do, >>158019493 is full of it.

>10/20/2016 Toady One Continuing the player adventurer artifact rumors/witnesses/conversations etc. The game needs to understand what's going on when you, say, bring an artifact into view, place it on a pedestal, pick it back up, and then hand it to somebody. If there are people around, they'll create witness reports (which later turn into rumors) for each of those, but the final artifact location is the most important, so I have to make sure the right old reports get cancelled and so forth, even if some of the events last longer or are missed by certain people and not others, and so on. For instance, if one of the witnesses only sees the part in that sequence where you pick the artifact up, they might think you are stealing it, which is sort of reasonable, but not if you just brought it back yourself moments earlier -- they could afford to be a bit more circumspect, maybe just say something and you can be like, "nah, it's cool, I just brought this back and want to give it to somebody". But that's hard to get working, especially as the overall situation becomes murky and complicated. We'll do what we can!

>I've done lots of tests of slightly different situations in the same room over and over. I have a little teleporter debug command that causes the last artifact mentioned in a conversation to appear in my hands, which really speeds things up.

32bit DF is, essentially, a deprecated version now. It's reasonable to assume that most of the player base is going to be using 64bit, and Toady has even expressed reluctance to continue keeping 32bit up to date. I think it would be misleading to remove the "(Out of Date)" from the DT link.
>>
>>158020464
I described their observed behavior. They do stalk their prey, edging towards their taget until within pouncing distance. If you charge them during this long "stalking" period, they will run scared. The animal may even back off if the prey is too dangerous. They dont have ambush skill but their method of attacking is stalking followed by ambushing. Now fuck off

>>
>>158024307
Anything you've seen that looked like stalking was entirely coincidental. Animal behavior is very poorly modelled right now. Predators don't do anything particularly predatory. They don't seek creatures to kill, they're only a little more willing to engage in combat with creatures that enter their LoS. When they do decide to fight they do the same thing as any other creature that has willingly joined a conflict: they run in a straight line toward their target. This applies to leopards and every other large feline, and their giant- and -man variants.

The vermin hunting tag is hard coded to do one specific thing. I suppose it's true that Toady could theoretically use it as a base to create a new tag that controls hunting behavior for larger creatures. It's not a thing that's in the game now, if that's what you're saying. It's not even moddable to do that, except maybe with some kind of dfhack wizardry.

Yes, a lot of it stems from people not wanting to take responsibility for their own actions / failures and pushing all the blame onto someone else (as well as the courts allowing people to sue basically whoever they want to).

It's really getting out of hand... A lot of people are pushing to ban shit like Tide Pods (pic related) because thousands of irresponsible parents are leaving them out where young children can get to them and of course the children are ingesting the pods and getting sick. The parents blame the pods for being brightly colored and visually appealing to children instead of blaming themselves for not storing toxic shit out of reach of their children.

As I was floating down unconcerned Rivers
I no longer felt myself steered by the haulers:
Gaudy Redskins had taken them for targets
Nailing them naked to coloured stakes.

I cared nothing for all my crews,
Carrying Flemish wheat or English cottons.
When, along with my haulers those uproars were done with
The Rivers let me sail downstream where I pleased.

Into the ferocious tide-rips
Last winter, more absorbed than the minds of children,
I ran! And the unmoored Peninsulas
Never endured more triumphant clamourings

The storm made bliss of my sea-borne awakenings.
Lighter than a cork, I danced on the waves
Which men call eternal rollers of victims,
For ten nights, without once missing the foolish eye of the harbor lights!

Sweeter than the flesh of sour apples to children,
The green water penetrated my pinewood hull
And washed me clean of the bluish wine-stains and the splashes of vomit,
Carrying away both rudder and anchor.

And from that time on I bathed in the Poem
Of the Sea, star-infused and churned into milk,
Devouring the green azures; where, entranced in pallid flotsam,
A dreaming drowned man sometimes goes down;

Where, suddenly dyeing the bluenesses, deliriums
And slow rhythms under the gleams of the daylight,
Stronger than alcohol, vaster than music
Ferment the bitter rednesses of love!

I have come to know the skies splitting with lightnings, and the waterspouts
And the breakers and currents; I know the evening,
And Dawn rising up like a flock of doves,
And sometimes I have seen what men have imagined they saw!

The kiss rising slowly to the eyes of the seas,

I have followed, for whole months on end, the swells
Battering the reefs like hysterical herds of cows,

I have struck, do you realize, incredible Floridas
Where mingle with flowers the eyes of panthers
In human skins! Rainbows stretched like bridles
Under the seas' horizon, to glaucous herds!

I have seen the enormous swamps seething, traps
Where a whole leviathan rots in the reeds!
Downfalls of waters in the midst of the calm
And distances cataracting down into abysses!

Glaciers, suns of silver, waves of pearl, skies of red-hot coals!
Hideous wrecks at the bottom of brown gulfs
Where the giant snakes devoured by vermin
Fall from the twisted trees with black odours!

I should have liked to show to children those dolphins
Of the blue wave, those golden, those singing fishes.
- Foam of flowers rocked my driftings
And at times ineffable winds would lend me wings.

Sometimes, a martyr weary of poles and zones,
The sea whose sobs sweetened my rollings
Lifted its shadow-flowers with their yellow sucking disks toward me
And I hung there like a kneeling woman...

Almost an island, tossing on my beaches the brawls
And droppings of pale-eyed, clamouring birds,
And I was scudding along when across my frayed cordage
Drowned men sank backwards into sleep!

But now I, a boat lost under the hair of coves,
Hurled by the hurricane into the birdless ether,
I, whose wreck, dead-drunk and sodden with water,
neither Monitor nor Hanse ships would have fished up;

Free, smoking, risen from violet fogs,
I who bored through the wall of the reddening sky
Which bears a sweetmeat good poets find delicious,
Lichens of sunlight [mixed] with azure snot,

Who ran, speckled with lunula of electricity,
A crazy plank, with black sea-horses for escort,
When Julys were crushing with cudgel blows
Skies of ultramarine into burning funnels;

I who trembled, to feel at fifty leagues' distance
The groans of Behemoth's rutting, and of the dense Maelstroms
Eternal spinner of blue immobilities
I long for Europe with it's aged old parapets!

I have seen archipelagos of stars! and islands
Whose delirious skies are open to sailor:
- Do you sleep, are you exiled in those bottomless nights,
Million golden birds, O Life Force of the future? -

But, truly, I have wept too much! The Dawns are heartbreaking.
Every moon is atrocious and every sun bitter:
Sharp love has swollen me up with heady langours.
O let my keel split! O let me sink to the bottom!

If there is one water in Europe I want, it is the
Black cold pool where into the scented twilight
A child squatting full of sadness, launches
A boat as fragile as a butterfly in May.

I can no more, bathed in your langours, O waves,
Sail in the wake of the carriers of cottons,
Nor undergo the pride of the flags and pennants,
Nor pull past the horrible eyes of the hulks.

Yeah, I was. I know you aren't the one I was talking to before, I just remembered you posting about the cheetah/ibex here when it happened and asking about it in FotF. I found it, and it was indeed an ambiguous answer as you said. I guess I was conflating Toady's "just lucky" response in that other link with the answer in this one.
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=140544.msg6528473#msg6528473

Regardless, chasing after willingly entering a conflict is something that every creature does. Dwarves will chase down a cheetah if they decide to fight it (though it only rarely goes the other way). A large_predator attacking a smaller creature that it happens across is not the same thing as predators stalking and hunting prey, an intentional seeking behavior. That's what anon was claiming for leopards, but it's not what LARGE_PREDATOR does.

I mean, the idea of introducing magic and alchemy and shit to your fortress is neat, but in the end it's just endless production chains and shit you need to look up and build in a convoluted manner.

It's technically well done from what I can tell, but it's just everything and the kitchen sink.

>still a neat thing to see
Agreed. I love all the little emergent features that aren't explicitly intended. Indeed, in a case like the one that was under contention it's easy to see how one could infer an explicit mechanic from a happy accident. The LARGE_PREDATOR tag will result in cases where your fisherdwarves get run down by a pride of lions, or grizzly bear corners and kills an elk, etc. The missing piece of intent on the part of the predator is easy to find in that scenario even when it's not there. It's part of the charm of the game.
That said, I do look forward to more robust animal behavior. It would be nice to need to put a guard on my pastures when a jaguar enters the map because I KNOW it's looking for a meal, instead of just thinking "if I'm unlucky that jaguar is going to wander into my pastures, I better keep an eye on it". Even better if they do start using stealth and tracking to find prey, though I don't want to think about what that might do to my fps.
>>
>>158058952
Hmm, I've never used minecarts before, but I suppose it's time to learn.
I've got a werebeast dwarf stuck in that hole, and I don't have anybody worth appointing as the High Lord of all things medical,
so you can probably see why I'd like to get rid of this useless injured scum.
>>
>>158050346
That's funny, because whenever I play Dwarf Fortress, I feel like I've been fucked
>>
>>158060254
Just build the wall around him.
After he transforms into werebeast and back, you can temporarily release him, just to assign to burrow and then imprison him again in dedicated place.
>>
>>158058952

You can station them on a retracting bridge over the hole you want them to fall in and then pull the lever. You could also do the same with burrows instead of a station order, but it's less reliable.
I can see a couple of ways to use minecarts to do it, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Yeah, but you can make a bridge that covers the entire radius that a station order can send a dwarf. You can't do that with hatches. And you can make a bridge take the entire floorspace of a room so there's nowhere to be flung that isn't down your hole.

Getting better. I've now dug out the top floor of the houses in the gated community. I found out that there were some misalignments in the castle and gated community, but I managed to come up with solutions.

Dwarves are just that, but If we really wanted to, we could make gods something really powerful, commanding the player even to do things in a certain fashion for fear of the god fucking up his saves, or opening demon portals in the fortress, something like that

Getting marksdwarves to shoot instead of charging the foe is even harder.
Any death arenas, oubliettes and moats have to be designed such that they aren't trivial to escape by climbing.
Miners fall to their deaths somewhat less, since they can grab walls.
Dealing with sheer cliffs in adventure mode is much more fun.

Looking good. Find sand yet? If not, you might want to import a shitload of gems from the dwarves. If you request max priority for every gem type you'll get enough for a ton of windows.
>>
>>158125183
I haven't popped the caverns yet. So far, I'm requesting the fuck out of sand bags of different types.

I will use gems for the library and temple, and possibly the castle. I'm already mass producing violet spess, white opal and fire opal in that order, so that they'll all blink in synch.

Just a warning, it will also cause everything you sell to the dwarven caravan to be considered stolen, so hold on to your masterworks if you don't want your legendary artisans to go crazy.
>>
>>158113845
Well, marksdwarves have had a distressing tendency for a while to move into melee, and the climbing/jumping lets them find a path to do so in more situations. Have them behind a fortification, and you should be fine.

Floor next to edge works. Also, smoothed rock walls and constructed block walls are too smooth to climb.

Taverns in yes. Also temples and libraries. You need to build some to keep your dwarves happy. They don't need to be especially fancy to work, though, and dwarves are a bit more emotionally stable now. They slow down and suffer skill penalties if they don't have their needs met, but they're unlikely to go berserk unless they're surrounded by the rotting corpses of their loved ones.

As for other features, I think stealth came at the same time with climbing. Not very visible in fort mode, but you can now sneak in adventure mode. The tavern update also included poetry, songs, dancing and storytelling. You can do it yourself in adv mode, and dwarves will do activities like that instead of the generic "on break" job.
>>
>>158129108
>stealth came at the same time with climbing
Stealth was in for years before climbing. It got a slight refining pass in .40, and the addition of vision cones and variable gaits for different movement modes made it feel quite different from before, but mechanically it didn't change much. Still as broken as it was before the changes.

>>158129108
Well, constructed block is difficult, but not impossible to climb.
>>
>>158129730
Except it's not. Stealth is actually pretty realistic at the moment. Instead of magically making you invisible, it considers all relevant factors, such as visibility, your profile, ground vegetation, et cetera.

The only reason that stealth seems overpowered is because people don't alert each other properly, and that's probably more related to the overall passivity with which NPCs react to player aggression in adv mode. It will probably be completely fixed during the crime and punishment arc.
>>
>>158130123
You can sneak up on large groups without being detected with little to no ambusher skill, and you can attack the same target repeatedly from stealth without being detected. And you can quickly train it to legendary for free with no risk just by walking around town or in the wilderness, magnifying the aforementioned issues and netting you tons of agility to boot. Along with the NPC issues you noted these make it ridiculously OP. If one were to argue that the realism of stealth mechanics are a function of how realistic it is to be hidden in any given situation where one might risk detection, or how realistic it is that one might get better at sneaking by performing a given action, then by either of those metrics one would have to include that DF's stealth mechanics aren't even remotely realistic.

These are true, but they're nothing a little tweaking can't fix.

>you can attack the same target repeatedly from stealth without being detected
This is bullshit. You could in the early 0.40 versions, but Toady fixed it pretty quickly. Attacking someone from behind in the current version WILL alert them and make them turn towards you.

Ah, my mistake, then. I'll take your word for it. I haven't used stealth except for training montages and quick creature detection (stealth 1 turn to look for vision cones) for quite sometime because it feels so cheaty. Last I actively used it that was still an issue, ~.40.10 or so. I'm not trying to exaggerate the problems with it. I'm just making the argument that detailed != realistic.

I once tried to build a Dwarf Space Program.

The idea was to construct a couple of massive pump stacks that would fill a spaceship shaped mould with lava and water and form a solid ship made of obsidian. I would then carve out the crew cabins etc. The ship was suspended over a large magma tube. I would then load it up with supplies and a crew, and when ready, 'launch' it down into the abyss.

In progress pic related.

Seriously, you'll need a weapon made of iron or better, or trick it into falling a long distance. Throwing rocks even has a decent chance of crashing your game if the rocks break entirely due to a bug with armor/weapon degradation.

How does /dfg/ keep their dwarves from drowning in wells? Mine is set up in my dining hall, and whenever a dwarf goes feral I always get 1 or 2 drowning. In retrospect, I should have added a hatch + floodgate combo at the bottom of the pool to drain it, but it's full and not looking like it'll drain any time soon.
>>
Would dwarf fortress be updated faster if we cloned Toady a few times? I know I'd volunteer to keep a Toady or two in my house, so original Toady isn't saddled with the living costs of all the new Toady clones. In order to get significantly faster progress, I think maybe 9 clones would do the trick. Now, who else could keep a clone at their place? I'd imagine a single Toady wouldn't be high maintenance, you just need to feed it chips, soft drinks, give it a place to sleep and a computer, and maybe bathe it every now and again. Any takers? It would be a very generous thing to do, take care of a Toady, and I know the community would be thankful.
>>
>>158185107
The fatal flaw in this plan is that the Toad has awful programming habits/skills, and all of these Toadlings would begin to diversify in those habits, and how they work. They'd start designing systems and going off on tangents that don't play well with eachother, and because of his (their?) innate inability to effectively communicate, these conflicts would not be easily resolved.
Putting aside all my exaggerations, though

I don't think the Toadlings would thrive without ThreeToe.
>>
>>158185502
In that case, the only solution I can see is to clone some Threetoes as well. In order to fix the divergent workings of the Toady clones, a sort of Hivemind needs to be set up, where we implant each newborn Toadling with a chip, allowing them to communicate over vast distances in a far more intrinsic language than words or sounds. Original Toady could be convinced to undergo surgery in order to be chipped as well I imagine.

You did a (f)ind on the map with "no aquifer" and "Yes" to metals, and found nothing? You could put minerals to Common in the generation if you want better search results. Digging through aquifers IMO is too much trouble for a novice; its a fun challenge, and can be used for great purposes (eg infinite water wheel power) but its a hassle. there are different strategies for digging through aquifers, like collapsing stone on top of it or slowly layer by layer building walls around a downward tunnel

Yeah, I'm not getting any iron granting rock, unless an aquifer is nearby. It might be inexperience with how to build forts, but I think having a steady supply of iron/steel is key.
>>
>>158194940
>designated miners
Why is this bad? My miners are constantly mining. They have disabled hauling too

>wasted skills
Its a few points. im not trying to min/max for super ultra efficiency, just want to get a fort started. Besides, you can pretty much get whatever you need later in game (items AND exp). Anyway how would you allocate your 7 dwarves' skills?

>no fuel
Good point, bringing some bituminous coal (10-20 or so, 3 pts each) is great to get the furnaces cooking without wasting time burning wood for charcoal

>no need for livestock
To each his own, I personally like having some animals around the fort, and having a birdsplosion later on is great for getting leather and meat industries cooking. Just make sure you disable eggs in your food stockpiles so your dwarves allow the turkeys/chickens to hatch.

>no seeds
Right again, yeah, they give you 5 of each seed starting, I usually up those to at least 15 of each (dimple cups, which are only used for making blue dye, fairly useless)

>overworked smith
Thats to get started, when you get migrants you can lighten his workload. Honestly my overworked smith usually ends up being a furnace operator for life, since by the time I get migrants all Ive managed to have him do is smelt a bunch of metal bars.
>>
>>158195210
Copper and silver is enough for a strong military, so I don't agree that iron and steel is necessarily required. but its definitely desired. If you have 0 iron on your entire map, you could request iron bars, steel bars, pig iron bars, hematite, limonite, and magnetite from your outpost liaison for maximum iron importing

This is how you prepare, boys.
1) 4 miner/5 weaponsmith/1 appraisal
2) 5 miner/5 armorsmith
3) 5 brewer/5 mason
4) 5 cook/5 furnace operator
5) 5 planter/5 blacksmith
6) and 7) 5 axe/1 dodge/1 armor/1 shield/1 fighter/1 wrestling
2 axes
2 picks
~60 drinks
~60 food
9 dogs
9 turkeys
1 cat
other garbage (coal bars seeds anvils)
Fuck carpenters, they're easier to level up than miners.
Miners don't get smith moods because their mining skill is always higher, but I remove moods from the game anyway because they make luck too involved.
Miners do mining all game and go to make weapons/armor when needed.
Mason does mason things and burns wood if needed.
Furnace operator just straight smelts shit all game.
Got a blacksmith skill on my planter to make masterwork platinum statues in every room.
Warriors cut all the wood in proximity and then practice and teach migrants to fight for the rest of the game.

Not really. Toady One's spoken about the inner workings of his game in a couple interviews, but not very much.

The individual things DF has to handle are all very simple, though. I'd guess the stuff a mainstream game has to handle is a lot more computationally complex, and the only reason they don't bring your processor to its knees is that the people who built the engine put some work into optimizing it. Pathfinding on a tile grid doesn't need any deep wizardry. Neither does line of sight on a tile grid. The rest is just counters and if-then statements. Every time people have asked Toady about stuff like multithreading, he's answered that the real reason of the FPS death is not that it runs on a single thread, but that his code is shit.

The way water works is pretty clever in its simplicity, by the way. Each one-seventh water tile checks the tiles around it, and if there's less water there, the water moves there. If there's a full 7/7 tile of water directly underneath it, it instead searches for available tiles connected to the water body. This gives you the illusion of water pressure for no extra work.

I make a 20-man military (I limit dwarf number to 35 max). I usually put ALL the migrants into the military until I have two squads ready. Everyone trains in the same small room and I just pray to Armok that it everything goes fine. I then make 20 masterwork steel sets with cloaks and shit. One legendary squad is more than enough to defeat a goblin siege of any size though.
>>
how do i deal with my dwarves moving very slowly in full armor?
>>
>>158196254
nice, I prefer small forts of 50 or fewer, as they are easier to manage and more comfy. but usually I try to go for a King and Mountainhome status and unfortunately that requires 140+ population (which ends up being FPS sucking cheese makers and fish cleaners. hauling boulders around.)

>>158196290
they need to train Armor User, which is learned during military training. Civilians wearing armor with no proficiency will be encumbered by it
>>
>>158196290
>>>/fit/
>>
>>158196290
>Armor use trains the armor user skill. Where armor quality affects hit block chance, armor user skill affects how quickly the dwarf can move in his armor. Faster speed translates into faster movement, both when walking around and when crossing blades with an opponent; well-trained dwarves will have more opportunities to strike, block, and dodge in combat.
>Every time a dwarf deflects an attack with their armor (reported as "the attack was deflected by his/her <armor>"), they will receive 30 experience. The skill can be trained with a danger room, by attacking local wildlife, or through live training schemes.
>>
>>158196475

>>
>>158196739
Dude, man, I keep dying or making fort screwups, I just copy/pasted from the wiki, lol. I'd hazard both through normal training and training against captured animals. See also: Danger room.
>>
>>158196739
I will assume you have equipment/uniforms assigned and squads filled with fresh recruits.
(m)ilitary -> (a)lerts -> all squads on Training/Active (green "A"). Your dwarves should now become Recruits, and will pick up their weapons and put on their armor
Make a barracks by (q)ing over a weapon rack, armor stand, or coffer, and assign ZTIQ for your squads (or just TQ would work, honestly dont know how these work too well). Your dwarves will now do combat drills and slowly gain skills in armor using, dodging, discipline, whatever weapon they are using, etc.
>>
why do some dwarves flash in the unit list?
>>
>>158196739
>>158196819
no, no, NO. Danger rooms aren't a thing since forever. This is how you make a military.
Assign all the dwarves you want to a squad in the military screen(m), go to Alerts(a), scroll down to Active/Training(Down arrow) and assign the squad on the right to this alert(Right arrow + Enter). Then build an armor stand(b - a), press Set building tasks/Prefs(q), put your cursor on the armor stand, press Make Barracks(r) and press Train(shift+T), Individual Training(shift+I), Squad Training(shift+Q). That's it. Your dwarves should equip whatever weapon they can find and run to the room. If at least one of them has ANY military skills, he will teach them to everyone and level up himself. It will take them a few YEARS to get to legendary skills but it's worth it. Live training is basically capturing/killing things which isn't worth the fuss.
After you have a metal industry going, make a lot of copper axes, shields, armor; just enough for everyone. This will train your armor and weapon smiths and let your military have something to wear and practice with until you get steel. I recommend that you use only axedwarves, NO crossbows. To change squad's equipment, go to the military screen(m), press Equip(e), go to Position Uniform(2 right arrow presses), scroll down to indiv choice and press enter to delete it. Then press Weapon(W) and scroll down to battle axes (might take a while to find) and select it. You can use uniforms, which is basically a loadout which you can assign whenever.
>>
>>158197383
Thanks for the tip on the danger room. Are crossbow dwarves not useful unless you have them firing from fortifications or something?
>>
>>158197482
Theyre buggy as fuck, if they are Hunters it clashes with Crossbowdwarf and they wont know what ammo and crossbow to use. They won't use old ammo only new ammo. They dont do what you want them to do. Taking novice swimmer at start is recommended, since it keeps you from drowning.
Also, you can melt ice (and snow) into drinkable water by 'g'etting yourself a campfire and 'I'nteracting with the ice while next to it.

If you travel alone at night (and didn't turn them off at worldgen), the bogeymen WILL get you.

You can recruit those drunks to your adventuring party. They usually don't have any equipment, but it's good to have a couple meatshields to distract the enemy.
>>
>>158199569
There are two right answers for how big a tile is.
The first is Toady's tilesize approximation of 2mx2mx3m.
The second is big enough for 1000 dragons as long 999 of them are lying down.
The first is good for getting a rough idea of the size and scale of spaces in the game, but the second makes the first kind of nonsensical. Until multitile creatures and a sensible method of dealing with item piles go in the official tile size abstraction won't make much sense.
>>
>>158198757
A 200x200x200 cube is 8 000 000 tiles. If every tile is a 64-bit pointer, that adds up to 64 megabytes, which is basically nothing for a modern computer.
That's about a 4x4 embark, give or take. You want to go bigger, you'll have more tiles. And I have absolutely no idea how tiles are actually represented in the program. They COULD just be references to a single "granite wall" object stored elsewhere is that tiles don't really need any "processing". Every wall (of the same material) is basically identical, until you start mining it, at which point it proceeds through a series of discrete steps into a floor tile which is also identical to all floors. Your huge array on what the terrain type is at each point of the map doesn't need to contain much data, as long as you can store shit like rooms, workshops and furniture somewhere else. Which you should try to do, since only a very tiny fragment of the map will ever contain any of those things.

The i and q options are for storing equipment, which doesn't currently work (hasn't for many years). There aren't settings for individual/squad training. Just setting the barracks for training for the given squad is the only thing that affects who trains there. Also, the keystrokes for all of those are lowercase.

death by falling is more efficient than death by jammed traps.

Hall B requires less digging and less platinum floors. If the pits are lined with upright spears the value would be the same either way.

Hall C looks ugly. Not in a million years
>>
>>158211218
Well, B has double the traps, meaning it takes longer for all the traps to get stuck from all the goblin giblets. (goblets?)
However, B has DOUBLE THE TRAPS, meaning you need twice as many components to build it. And that really isn't the optimal way to place the traps. Between a hallway with a straight line of traps, and a shorter hallway with the same number of traps in two lines, the long hallway is the better option.

Go to bed anon you're drunk. You're on the top of a goblin watchtower at night.

Use Move Carefully to the hatch tile from the correct direction (towards the stairway below it) to open it.

Or if you want some excitement, climb over the fortifications and fall while trying to climb down the wall.

So with equipping military, I'm choosing specific items to equip, but things like greaves and boots are kind of confusing me. For gloves, there is a left and right, but for boots and greaves, there is no specific side to equip, yet I can equip multiple. Is there a rule to follow for that stuff? I remember an anon posting awhile back the 'optimal' equipping guide, but I have had no luck searching for it.

>>
>>158289834

>>
>>158289230
>>158289834
That's not the only benefit, dwarves also get high off of seeing blingy shit, so making for example your well out of gold blocks, a gold chain, gold mechanisms, and a gold bucket will make any dwarf walking past have a mini orgasm. So they'll care less if everyone they love dies.
>>
>>158290903
What if they wear golden armor? Do they get a permanent boner?

I don't have any other metal and an armorer just migrated
>>
>>158291523
You can't make golden armour normally, that can only happen via a strange mood. Which isn't bad terrible thing, because gold has terrible properties for armour and weaponry. Steel has the exact same value as gold though, but unfortunately dwarves don't seem to admire armour as much as furniture. So if you want them to have permanent, bearded little boners you'll just have to scatter high value shit like wells and statues everywhere.

>>
>>158272927
Gloves, gauntlets and mittens have handedness, so equipping them specifically requires you to select a left and a right. Boots, shoes and socks don't have footedness, so selecting any two will do. One greaves covers both legs.
If you aren't doing specific equipment assignments you only have to assign boots, gauntlets or any other hand/foot coverage once. It assigns a pair.
>>
>>158298781
and what would be an ideal size for a 1280/720 screen

Being a second class citizen by choice, and 16x24 is the largest native tile size you can use on a 1366x768 screen, which I assume you mean unless you actually have a 1280x720. You can use 16x16 as the largest square resolution at that scale.

I'm pretty sure underwold spires took their place entirely. Unlike the former, the spires have an actual lore behind them.

What I'd like to see are underworld spires which have been long abandoned and fallen into ruin.

For example, some dwarven or human army might have defeated the gobbos hundreds of years ago, and then bulldozed the site and built their own capital on top of it. In most aspects the new capital is like other sites of that civ. However, there should be visible remains of the old site here and there, and somewhere in the central area, there should be a long forgotten entrance to the old spire.

Or perhaps, it should just be a ruin in the wilderness. We kinda already have that, but Toady needs to rework the way abandoned sites detoriate. For example, stone structures should fall into ruins just like the wooden houses. They should also gradually be swallowed up by the stratigraphy as new layers of earth accumulate on the site.

Not only did she make it, she jumped the gap instead of climbing around, and then climbed down to the roof of this building without making me build a rescue scaffold. Absolute maddwarf. Welcome to Relicwebs.

Ok so I started a new fortress, built some plots, planted some plump helmets and started "brewing from plants R"

Now I have no more seeds. The wiki said brewing from plants produced seeds, does anyone know what happened? I also saifly stored my food in barrels.

Good question. Have you looked at your stocks to see if there are any seeds? Maybe the dwarves already planted them?

Also

Typo obviously, meant safely.

They're not planted in on my plots (that's how I noticed I had no more plump helmet seeds) adn the only seeds left in my food stockpile are the other seeds I embarked with.

I'm pretty distressed, I'm still on the learning curve and this fortress started superbly but can life even be sustained without plump helmets? I'm very sad and I'd really like to solve that mystery.

Okay, so you did brew the plump helmets, not cook them, I assume. If they are without a doubt gone, there's no reason to panic.

Start hunting for food, or fishing if you have a flowing water source near your fort (if you go the fishing route, make sure you have a fish cleaner and a fisher's workshop.

For alcohol, plant pig tails, cave wheat, and sweet pods, any of them you have available and brew them. When the mountainhomes bring supplies, buy up some plump helmet seeds and such. Also, be sure you have enough pots for food and drinks.
>>
>>158331715
Also, if you don't know this, rock pots are a far better choice for food storage than wood. Craft them at a craftsdwarf's workshop.
>>
>>158331715
Are pots better than barrels? And I didn't even build a kitchen yet so I brewed them for sure (I still have the many wine barrels I made with them). I'm going to make a complete inventory of my foodstock, I'm probably just being retarded.

Thanks for the advices though, I'm going to buy some seeds next time I see the traders just to be sure.

Is fame still broken?
>>
>>158332314
Oh by the way, is there any advantage to stock food on a stone floor compaired to a soil floor? Less chance to get worms/vermins or something like that?
>>
>>158332348
No. When has it been broken?
>>
>>158332314
It's not as much of a problem as it once was, but rocks are generally more abundant than wood, and when your rockcrafter isn't making pots, you can keep him busy making valuables without fearing that you'll run out of material. Also, have your record keeper take full stock of everything you have, exact numbers.

And, no, the only difference that can be made with storing food is that, if it's kept contained behind doors, flies can't get to it.

Its alright, my hand writing is currently one of my biggest fuckups. I am still trying to restore it to what it once was.

Doors don't make any difference for flies or any other vermin.

Fetus anon here, anyone have any clue how to get started making a TWBT pack? How does it work? I must be bad at googling because I am not finding anything besides people's finished packs, and people asking questions about how to use a pack that's already made.
In other news I updated a couple tiles that were bugging me

As far as wood goes I think I'm going to be okay.

Also, an "administrator" just migrated, it's perfect I'm going to get make him a boookeeper and a manager.
>>
>>158333906
Have a pure ascii set and a graphical set, so you can combine them via twbt without having messed up text, don't mind the spamming bumps but I'm tilesetanon after all.
