Are there any Unity tutorials just for showing me how to set up the fucking project? I don't need to be told what a data structure is, but I would like to know how I handle gamestates, manipulate objects, et cetera. It seems like every tutorial starts off:

>SO DIS HERE IS HOW YOU MAKE A VARIABLE!

Mother fucker I know what a variable is, just tell me how to set up my project.

What is this shit? Are UE4's shaders so nomals based to the point that they wont update the shadows if part of the mesh deforms? This is a huge problem for me!

Do you wear clothes when you dev?

i'm gonna guess that you're not recalculating the normals, and the box isn't actually receiving self-shadows. the tiny color change is likely just the default screen-space gi or ao solution.

Anyone here knows how to make a private server offline in an MMORPG? the server files are downloadable because its a version that died about 2007-2008 before they went to the shitty 2.0

Just starting out here, after so many years of being too afraid to fail.

Why does Game Maker have 1,000,000 ways to do the same thing? I seems no two tutorials teach the same way to do anything, and their drag and drop functions for events are... not great.

>>
>>155090050
why are you trying to learn how to use game maker before learning how to program?
>>
>>155089245
>>155088602
Lights can also be made moveable, try both
>>
>>155090236
I know the basics of programming. I'm not very good, and I don't find it fun, but I can lay down some code.

I figured Game Maker would be best way to make something without straight learning a programming language, being that it is literally advertised as such.
>>
>>155090050
>>155090463
I'd recommend scrapping the DnD altogether and following the GML tutorials.

You can make a game with DnD, but it's not flexible in any way.
>>
>>155090463
>it is literally advertised as such.

that is a meme to get lazy people and children to think they can make a good game without programming, and you fell for it

it's true that getting a prototype running in unity or GM is obviously faster than straight up just like make game in your language of choice, but you still need to know what's up. shit isn't easy, it's just easi*er* than other stuff
>>
>>155090463
>I figured Game Maker would be best way to make something without straight learning a programming language
If you inted to do something really basic only using drag and drop functions: yes.
But as soon as you need to make something more elaborate or need to have more control over any particular function you will need to code, and therefore to learn GML.

So yeah, if you want to get into game dev you'll have to learn a programming language at some point.
>>
>>155090778
>that is a meme to get lazy people and children to think they can make a good game without programming
But you can. It just won't be very good or unique.

>>155090773
I figured as much. I'm fine with learning it, I just begin to wonder if I should just go with a "real" language instead. GM just seems to have the environment all set up for everything already.

>>155088743
You mean how ue4 recalculates the normals on import? I did do that and I even tried using both recalculating tools but it didn't make a difference.

Also it's extra annoying because the previews used out of the actual scene show the deform properly.
>>
>>155091490
I meant collision checking with a stage. Like 80 Marios all running at once.

It can handle Gradius without breaking a sweat.
>>
>>155091550
Honestly, you mentioning that RoR was made in it at least solidifies it with me as an acceptable choice. I don't know how wild I want my stuff to get, but if it can handle that, my amateur ass shouldn't have any issues.
>>
>>155091734

Good luck anon. You can do the thing
>>
>>155091734
RoR was even made in Game Maker 8, which is quite a bit weaker than where Studio is at now.
>>
>>155091676
No, you have to recalculate it once you change the shape.
>>
>>155091927
Well I know that's what I need if it's all normals based but I have no idea how to tell ue4 to update it on the fly while in animation or if that's even possible. Cause updating it just once while it's ballooned out will just give me the same problem but the other way around.

After googling, I see morphers are skeletal meshes, and those don't have lighting settings, I'd guess they all use the moveable ones

Changing lighting settings was my best try, I have no idea how to fix it. A material that checks itself what way the UVs are facing, something in that direction?
Try flipping 'Use with Morph Targets' on in the material

The issue was just how blatantly a cash grab it seems with the patreon advertisement and all. I've looked at the patreon and it looks like it was just made today.

This could be a sticky issue because I'm thinking that a lot of people here will want to post patreons and try to cash in and I'm not against that; what I'm really concerned about is the random porn dev who already has a collection of cash grab porn games dumping them into the jam. If you see something like this and everyone here agrees it's just completely egregious then let me know and I'll remove those games.

I'm not sure, but maybe the score counter should shake vertically as opposed to horizontally when you rack points? The horizontal shake makes it look sorta like a text alignment issue.

i've done the horizontal left-to-right shake, as i think it looks more natural since it's closer to page-flipping in a book or shit like that
i also think it lasts short enough not to look like text alignment issue, since there is pretty much no situation in which you could attain score every frame for extended periods of time (and even then vertical shake would have the same issue), a more specific solution would have to be developed if something like that was found
i don't think individual digit changes would look very good with that kind of font, but i could try that sometime

>you guys should just make next jams themselves last like 3 months
Join demo day instead?
In my opinion the fact that you only have 2 weeks makes for the jam makes them way more interesting.
Jams are about fun anyway not a competition. Nobody gets a prize after all.

There is really no way to avoid people "cheating" on the jam anyway. Even if you kept the jam's theme a secret until it starts, some people could already have a game in the making and just reskin it to fit.

> learning how to do multiplayer

I never knew just how big of a difference there is when you're going for a simple lan game, to an online coop to more of a battle arena type of game with multiple people online at once. Actually, it's not hard to do any of those until you try to do even the most basic forms of security.

Holy shit I can't imagine actually doing a game and having to constantly work around security holes.
>>
>>155101835
Which variety of security are we talking?

As long as you're not doing something dumb like running code sent by other players, you don't really have to worry.

If you're talking about preventing cheating... Yeah shit's near impossible. Dedicated people will find a way to fuck with your game.

>>
>>155101972
Preventing cheating, yes. Then again authoritative server architecture prevents a huge chunk of the cheating. And I guess I shouldn't worry so much about the more dedicated players, because it will be a never ending headache. I'm almost certain even the biggest companies spend a good part of their time doing nothing, just going through all the new exploits that cheaters find and fixing the holes.

There's freelance websites but that's majority webdev and java, if you know Django,Rails or some other frameworkd then you can find a job there easily. Webdev and javadev/enterprisedev is fucking atrocious work though, it's barely programming and it's absolutely mind numbing. You can find some good jobs too but not as many.

Make sure to have a portfolio to show off your skills. If you want to webdev, make a website in the framework of your choice. If you want to code games make some open source games and upload them somewhere.

Working on open source projects also looks nice in resumes so find an open source project that you like and it's something you'd want to work on professionally and do some work on it. It shows you can work in team(even though not that much), you are able to get into new source code and actually work with it, that you can comply to a coding standard..

Find IT firms in your town, check if they are hiring and email them a motivational letter, your resume and a link to your portfolio (you can have your own website if you're webdev or github and similar work in a pinch if you don't want to make a web).

Fucking don't. Php is one of the ugliest things on the face of the earth, if satan wanted to make a programming language he would make php, that being said you can learn the basics pretty fast so if you really need the money then go for it.

If they want to hire you without you having a previous job in php or php portfolio then they probably expect you to not know much about it but if you have background in C++ and C# they know you are good and can learn. That's how it usually works, it's expected you don't know much but your ability to learn on the job is why they will hire you anyways.

but money, satan's not that bad of a guy he just disagrees with the big guy, also a signing bonus

The shading is not definitive AT ALL, in fact I'm currently looking for some unity shader that will let me have that cartoon style but not too-cartoon, all the renders I've been posting here are the fastest render setups I could come up with (and a way to be able to show the progress without finishing the UV mapping of course)

About the TF2 style weapons, yeah, actually I had to change up the double barrel shotgun a bit because it was a carbon copy of the force-a-nature

Also, for >>155104709 and to keep it vidya, I found a digital drawing I did on 2013 of a concept I had of a wipeout-motorstorm-mad max style racing game. Of course it all ended on that drawing.

Background is fine. The character should contrast with it though, it's kinda hard to see the character. It takes a second to recognize it and when in the middle of action the last thing you want to do is spend any time looking for your character, it needs to stand out so you immediately see it.

Also the animations kinda suck but that's not as important.

i dont like it and try to avoid it, but I accept it as a thing that's just accepted.

as OMA, and still working on game mechanics,
my progress will be real slow.
hence why i planned to start shilling only when my game mechanics are done.

but since people are calling me nodev, might as well show some sneak peak now so people don't go "who?" when i start posting progress around.
>>
>>155107593
I don't agree with that at all

What is the difference between you posting minor changes to your walk animation a bunch of times in a single thread and someone else posting their screen shake they just implemented? I personally don't see a problem with either of them, it's a part of your game's development and it opens up a dialogue.

I'm not going to come here every 6 months to post updates

>I'm not going to come here every 6 months to post updates

you keep it up then anon, but don't be shy to share your progress with us. It's only attention whoring when you repeatedly post old webms again and again or put on a name/trip.

Sharing how your game is coming along during the early stages can help, you know.

Have you considered making the gators look suprised after bouncing them away with your umbrella shield if they lunge at you?

Consider more gators in the future, maybe a gator character unlockable, they're the cutest critter in your game so far to me

This book is amazing. Coming from web dev (not a wordpress Pajeet though) and trying to prototype my first game, and this is giving me tools to solve every problem I come across. Plus it's free to read online.

It's quite exciting learning these new ways of thinking about structuring a program. I'm surprised by just how different the domain specific solutions are, game dev feels like a bit of a ghetto with it's own way of doing things. Some of the WebSocket things I've done have had some similarities, but mostly it's all new and really fun to learn.

Anyone else got any good resources for making the transition to game programming from other fields?

When I figure out a system that doesn't lag like crazy after awhile. Is it realistic in Game Maker to split a stage into x amount of surfaces based on the size of the stage?

If its a 2048x2048 stage, you could break that into a 4x4 of 512x512 surfaces, and when a blood splatter spawns, it finds which quadrant its in and paints some blood onto that surface.

Might be an issue at the seams between surfaces. Hmm

This argument is like the "Wikipedia is unreliable" argument. There's a grain of truth in there, Wikipedia can be wrong, and patterns can be misused. But more often than not they're both incredibly useful tools. It's just a case of knowing when to not use it, as much as it is knowing when to use it.

When I first learned the SOLID principles I inadvertently started over-engineering my code. It took years more practice and learning before I restrained myself on that front. I certainly still make plenty of bad decisions, but I feel like I'm getting better at identifying code smells much sooner and doing something about them.

>>155117421
For one: We don't care about finished games, we want to see a game grow while it's being created.

As for actual feedback:
"With a twist!" Don't say this, every game ever says this and it's really old/cheesy.
"You only use two buttons!" You need to explain how this works for players to be interested.
You just jump from clip to clip as fast as possible.

Overall your game could be fun, but with the awful trailer I doubt anyone would even give it a try.

Well then your game is not done.
>>
>>155117161
6 years, but the big jump came this year when I joined the company I currently work at. I'm currently a senior developer but I also assist our current architect whose on contract and will be leaving soon. He's been delegating responsibilities which are a mix of people management, code reviews, and technical decisions of all levels, ranging from high-level design desicions (like which software or library to use in a given case), to arbitrary stuff like what to name a method or service, etc.

That said, I live in a shitcountry where even people with less than 2 years of experience and nothing to show for it can be called seniors, so I'm not really a demographic.

As for wanting to make games, it was really a (childish?) dream from my childhood, I loved playing games and just wanted to make my own. After years of doing stuff I didn't exactly want to, I know think it's time to make something I myself want to do, be it personal projects or games.

If the industry is in bad shape in the west, trust me, it's even worse here. But now at least I have the luxury to take risks because now I've got a failsafe, I can always go back to a boring 9-to-5 job doing web stuff.

>>
>>155111269
>>155111079

its objectively better tho, for the reasons described by anon. maybe you don't see the complexity in that example, but trust me, once you have 300+ assets combined, you will beg for the sweet release of death if there's no quick way to discern which element is what.
>>
>>155114407
lol.
>>
>>155117980
I tried and there is a bit of a bounce but it's hard. I'll do what I can to make it more pronounced. I'm working on portraits for the game as well, which will hopefully solve boner induction problems.
>>
>>155118236
And Bethesda also has a massive fan base and a track record. If you buy a Bethesda game, you know it's gonna have a lot of problems, but chances are it's gonna be good. Small-time Indie devs don't have that luxury.

Trigger warnings are not fit for anonymous conversation boards. reddit's format doesn't lend itself well to progress posts
>>
>>155119687
I don't know about other places but here's how AGDG works:
-You start a game
-You post progress on your game in these threads
-You keep posting progress every week or so until people start to recognize you
-You show people you don't blatantly ignore feedback
-You tell the community when your game is finished
If you skip one of these steps AGDG will not help you tweak your finished game. That's just how it works.
Anyway, good luck with your greenlight campaign.

Web based, using ServiceWorkers to send push notifications (targeted at phones, but can be played on a computer). Idea is you play through the day by responding to notifications like "The engine is on fire" with one of the two actions "Open airlock" or "Fight fire", and by coordinating with your crew (real players) over WebSocket based instant messages to share information required to complete missions. I want to recreate the limited information effect you get in games like Mafia and SS13 where some people withhold information to their own benefit. The goal could be traitor objectives like in SS13, or mutiny to take over a ship by gaining support of other players on the crew. The Captain and loyal crew would be aiming to complete a mission at the same time.

So it's mostly text based, but I've been nicking some concept art of spaceship interiors for flavour so far. I need to remove those or replace them with legit versions before too long.

GML is like a mix between C++, Java and Javascript as far as syntax goes. However, out of the box GML has more innate game programming relevant functions than C++, where you'd have to import libraries and what not, which I believe is the point he's trying to make.

Anyone here use GameMaker enough to know if it's possible to get the exporter to store the "included files" in the game archive (data.win) instead of dumping them in a folder next to the game executable ? I've got a bunch of map files from Tiled that get loaded in dynamically and I'd like to hide the files when I export my game.
>>
>>155127663
Nice. I wanted to learn C/C++, but I usually learn when I'm driven by a project, so I got into GML. I'm very happy to hear that I can switch later to C++ without having a totally foreign syntax in my head.

Why? 99% of players aren't going to look, and for those who do want to poke around, I wouldn't expect a standard Game Maker archive to present much of an obstacle.

This is not the sort of patterns that Game Programming Patterns is about.
>Patterns are "HOW-TO-X-FOR-DUMMIES".
That's an odd statement to make. I don't see how you'd consider patterns that unless by "pattern" you mean "tutorials on exactly how to do X" or maybe even "popular StackOverflow answers". Frameworks are closer to it than programming patterns.

The reason patterns are called "patterns" is that they were written time and time again in real software as the proper abstraction for its particular case. In other words, patterns were discovered and documented by expert programmers, not artificially created by them to help teh noobs.

C++ is a whole another level when compared to GML, mostly in the way how you get things done with it.

However, once you've learned one language it's not too hard to get used to the syntax of another. That's only ever going to be a problem if you jump from GML to some wholly different paradigm, like functional programming in Haskell or Lisp.

I myself learned my first bits of programming in Flash's ActionScript 2.0 back in like 2006, and what I learned from there basically helped me learn Java, Javascript, C and C++ quick.

What numbers did you hear and from who?

Bungie is hiring testers and 'gameplay designers' right now. Shit, pretty much every studio that has a game coming out late this year or early next year is hiring testers right now. The problem with a 'game/level designer' is that you need only one for every 50-100 people on the project. >inb4 the barrier to entry is lower
Nah, it really isn't.

I may be wrong, but most posters on /agdg/, of the ones who actually have a game they are working on, seem to place a lot of value on their game's art, music or story. There is the occasional dev who seems to love fiddling with game mechanics, the kind that you imagine invented a ton of boardgames as a child, but his is rare. But if you don't care much about mechanics, video games are a very limiting medium. So, why bother? I am not trying to discourage you, by the way - I'm genuinely curious because I've recently been feeling like maybe games are the wrong medium for me.

No. Video games are an amazing opportunity for learning about new technologies, how computers work etc. I'm a filthy engine dev, that's why I'm saying this. I had to realize that even though I wanted to make games as a kid, now I'm more interested in the "how" of game making. You guys are a bunch of bullies, who have no right to be telling anyone how or how they can't make their games. If you want your standard cis white male protagonist than be free to look into the mainstream triple A development studios. As for other fellow idie devs out there who care to change the community by addded, yes, "furry" casts of interesting characters and female protagonists. Keep on making your game, or just leave this toxic community like I am. It's not everyday I get the chance to do nice things for my girlfriend because of my long and busy work schedule, and I'm not going to have the one project that I do for her get shit on by a bunch of bitter and sad trolls.

May I ask what demoscene is? This word is a big question for me for more than 10 years now. Maybe I'm searching for answers in the wrong way, but all I find is visual experiments with algorithms and chiptune.

This is what the Earth looks like to the ISS. Your Earth goes from being able to see the entire planet (aka the distance to the moon, 380,000 KM) to twice as big as ISS in < 3 seconds. Is your ship really traveling 150,000 KM/S?

The scale feels really, really off -- most likely from the movement speed of the craft, if not from the actual scale.

Do you know anything about programming or art?

Do you have anyone that you can work with to accomplish your goals?

If you don't plan on landing, maybe just have the spaceships disintegrate on entry. It's this sci-fi cliche that all spaceships can for some reason enter the atmosphere and just fly like planes, even when it barely makes sense engineering wise.

I think the way Freelancer did it was perfect, with docking rings for the actual relevant planets, could even have space harbors with shuttles that take you to the planet itself if you don't want the spaceships not actually in space at all, and I think that's a nice budget way to do it without having huge empty planets (like Star Citizen will most likely have).

Good stuff anon.

100 km/s is the warp speed right now, just to show in a timeframe that fits in a webm that it's a 3d object and not some background thing

it also doesn't get that big at all, it still kinda fits in the viewport

It's a big subject where actual spaceship design might go. I think it'll go the way of specialization.

But that's not the thing, the thing is having an excuse for the player as to why he can't fly on the planet.

Not quite, I've done a little bit of pixel art before, mostly modifying and extending the free tilesets I got from OGA. And of course I went through several iterations (pic related) before I had something I thought was worth posting.
