I have a dwarf with a fey mood, but hes just sitting in the meeting hall and not moving.

I checked his skills, and hes a legendary weaver so I built a loom, but still no dice - he just stands in the meeting hall.

I'm worried he might go mad soon.

Noob question here, How do I stop a dwarf from fishing?
I disabled Fishing in his labors. But this little bitch still ran away to some water.
>>
>>154866729
Washing? Drinking?

You're not out of booze are you
>>
>>154866859
I just started the game, disabled fishing and assigned him to mining. Designated some mining areas and unpaused, yet first thing he did is run away.
>>
>>154867014
You do have a pick, yeah?

Are you sure he's equipped with one and not someone else?
>>
>>154867086
But even if he isn't equipped with one, why wouldn't he just idle instead of run away? Or are dwarfs doing whatever they want part of the game?
>>
>>154867257
No, in my experience the designated miners always take off and mine.

Well what do you expect him to do? Just stand in place and wait for you to learn how to play?
>>
>>154867014
If he already had the fishing job queued up then he'll complete it before going to do anything else (or it gets cancelled for whatever reason). If you want you can manually cancel it by highlighting him in the [u]nits screen and pressing [x] (although I just tested it on a fisherdwarf myself and it seems you can't manually cancel fishing jobs. Still, you can typically cancel a job you don't want done by doing that. It's saved countless dwarves from trying to load cage traps I forgot to forbid during sieges in my forts.)
>>
>>154861953
>never built a tanner's shop
Never had hunters before?
>>
>>154868646
Yeah, that strikes me as weird too. I always used tanner and leather shops for my civilian squad gearsets to keep a minimum top/bottom/shoes on everyone between changes of rotting clothes.
>>
>>154868646
>>154868910

Nope. I get by just fine on fishing, and I don't like my dwarfs wandering around - I like being able to build underground passages to walled-in fishing spots to make everything nice and secure.

If I have a tough seige, I can probably hold out for at least 2 years without any of my dwarfs leaving the secure areas of my fort.

It won't matter. You need to make a really light hammer and ensure that it's the only one available for your hammerer to choose if you want people to survive hammerings. A weak guy beating you with a sledge hammer is still going to kill you.
>>
Why the dwarfs don't pray to the player?
>>
>>154877518
How do I ensure it's the only hammer available?

Put him in a room with it when I assign him the role?

Forbid/sell/destroy the rest that aren't already equipped. If he can't path to both the hammer and the person he wants to whack with it then the job will either not trigger at all or will cancel if it's already started.

Cut gems have a base value of 5. The highest tiers of Diamonds and the Star Sapphire and Star Ruby has a value of 60. This results in 300 value per cut 'rare' gem.
Ammo itself has a base value of 1 PER BOLT, meaning the majority of its value comes from its quality*material values. steel masterpiece bolts are 30*12 = 360. The usual stack of ammo is 25 per metal bar.
360*25= value of 9000 for a stack of masterpiece steel bolts

Now, encrust even a few rare gems with a value of 40 or greater, and the value just goes crazy.

All my dwarves are fairly happy, there's no lack of anything in the fort, yet I keep getting infighting messages. The killer has a thought about giving out a punishment, so I imagine something along those lines. Does this just randomly happen past a certain population, like sieges? I've never had it happen before, but I've also never had a fort last this long.

>>

>Does this just randomly happen past a certain population, like sieges?
No. Tavern brawls are a thing, and they will sometimes turn deadly, but that's not what this is. If there's a thought about punishment, then the farmer broke a law (probably violated a mandate) and the soldier was applying the proper penalty.

The captain of the guard and its squad is also responsible for the dispensation of justice. Beatings are administered by them and are a step down from hammerings, but both are often fatal. You can avoid most beatings by having chains or cages dedicated to your justice system.
>>
>>154902071
I refrained from setting up a jail because I was told to make sure your dwarves don't forget to feed prisoners and have them die, you're supposed to set up small stockpiles of food and drink around them. Whenever I make a food stockpile away from my dining area, dwarves end up walking from as far as possible to eat at the new stockpile, so I don't bother with it anymore.

They can if they're members of your fort. Caged grazers will starve to death and caged citizens can both starve and dehydrate if they aren't tended to. Creatures that aren't members of your fort don't have to eat or drink whether they're caged or not.

Human caravans keep walking into my Depot, do the setting up animation for about a second before immediately departing and exiting the map.

The depot is accessible, I'm not at war with them, and it doesn't happen all of the time. Sometimes they set up and we successfully trade, other times they do what was previously stated.

Anyone know what's up with this? It's not that big a deal because the dwarven and elven caravans still work perfectly, just not the human ones. Anyone else ever experience this problem?

>>
>>154950231
I'm presuming you have no picks, and thus can't make shit out of stone?
>>
>>154950231
Well three beds should be enough to hold you out until autumn

Dig until you hit stone, then look for gems and build a craftdwarf workshop to make stone crafts.

You can then trade for an axe with these. Use stone jugs for booze and storage, they'll take forever to move but shouldn't be to bad with a small fort.

Once the caravan comes trade for cheap copper axes, they sell for barely anything so even with just a few rough gems you should be able to trade for one.

>>
>>154950859
Honestly necro sieges are pretty easy unless they bring an absolute huge amount of zombies or your fort is still young.

A novice wrestler can easily kill most necromancers, but will not be able to kill zombies without weapons.

If you have weapons it's as difficult as any other siege, just make sure to kill the necromancer first.
>>
>>154951716
If you can't get to the necro, dig a big ass hallway and either line it with traps, or dig a big pit and put a bridge over it. Open the hallway to the enemy and make 'em run the gauntlet to then face your ramshackle military, or trap all the zombies in a big hole and go beat up the necromancers.
>>
>>154951841
my fort's still in it's first year, and the zombies are almost as many as my dorfs

I've encountered a weird problem that I can't seem to find any info on.

I expanded my tower to be taller and edited the patrol route to reflect this, however the soldiers simply refuse to patrol to the top of the tower (pic related). They simply sit at the previously highest level of the tower where the route ended before editing it. I tried cancelling and re-issuing the order, I tried cancelling it and then creating a new route and issuing them that, I tried creating a route just for that top level, nothing. It's accessible from both sides, if I station them manually they'll get there no problem. I have made no changes otherwise.

This feels bugged.

I don't think I've ever had links to stairs in any route, the dwarves have always managed to path to them just fine. This is the first route that's caused any issue for me. The previous route this one is replacing spanned multiple z-levels as well with no problem. That's only 6z levels off the ground (nowhere near the top of the map).

Try disabling multilevel view and using a printmode other than TWBT.
If that doesn't work, disable dfhack functions until crashes stop or just disable dfhack entirely.
If that doesn't work then your crashes are caused by a vanilla issue.

All of .42+ releases have been very stable. TWBT is notoriously associated with crashing issues. Dfhack itself isn't, but it's the most likely candidate after that. Nothing else that LNP does has the potential to crash DF, it's just a launcher and init editing gui. There are many unresolved vanilla crashes, but most players won't be affected by them consistently.

So I had the good fortune to capture a mud man in a cage trap, and decided that it would be a cute idea to chain it in my library tower, like it was a magical golem or something.

However, as soon as the mud man was chained, it immediately attacked a visiting human scholar that walked next to it. The wiki says:

>Hostile creatures on restraints will no longer be aggressive to dwarves

So is that working as intended? The mud man will still attack any non-dwarf that comes near it? Just wanna confirm that this behavior is not a bug.
>>
>>154966453
In fortress mode, obviously it would just change the dwarves behaviors, thoughts, etc. It would probably just be a trial and error type thing if the effects/substances are randomly generated, otherwise it would be easy to tell. Adventure mode would be way more interesting IMO

gold blocks and gold bars have identical values and can be used for nearly all of the same things; however blocks can NOT be used for forging.
The only places you want gold blocks are in buildings that require them to function, such as screw pumps, so keep your bars and only build blocks when you must.

Come on guys, there are more interesting implementations.

Adv mode:

creatures randomly appear to be other creatures
Tiles swap for other tiles, trees appear to be speaking, rivers rushing out of nowhere
People seem to be attacking you but they actually aren't
Imagined horrific wounds - occupants of a village all have their guts hanging out or eyes removed
Imaginary requests to slay people
You have the ability to fly! Or not, as you find out after jumping off a tree

Hallucinations have interesting possibilities. Simple things like mood modification and pathing irregularities is easy.

>tfw your adventurer realises that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

it would be even cooler if the player were able to see floor constructions(like bridges) where there are only open spaces, and if they become able to walk of ledges without using the careful movement command

of course, that would be cooler once the worldgen buildings become more detailed, and we have things like balconies and open windows
>>
>>155014202
first find the central area, where dorfs are chilling in large halls. from there, you should be able to fast travel upwards and arrive at the entrance
>>

Fair enough, but those could be used at a smaller scale in DF, as there are enough people in a medium/large world for it to work
>>

When you build a construction or building using a bar it continues to appear in your stocks screen. Turning bars into blocks before using them in thise applications keeps your bars list from being inflated by "in use" items, transferring that to the blocks list instead, which going to be so inflated in 99% of forts anyway.
>>

Actual dwarves find the terms "dwarf" and "midget" offensive, and prefer their grotesque deformity to be euphemized as "little people". I would gamble that there isn't a single dwarf or midget in the world who plays DF. The name will become something of a useless point by the time the game gets advanced enough to randomly generate full world geograph and creatures based on the myths of that world.

Eventually we won't even be playing fantasy-dwarves, but a fantasy-creature that fits the world it lives in.

Nah, It's fucking great that Toady adds more tools to controle the type of world that you'll have, but playing as dwarves won't dissapear, unless these fancy procedurally generated creatures are spot on

Dwarf Fortress will be no more attacked than any other fantasy game or movie or book.
Even if, and I really mean IF, some group of tumblrinas decided to throw their most recent shitfit at Dwarf Fortress, they'd get as much done as they always do, as in, being ignored.

You're right, his works aren't politically immune. All it will take is the right special interest to whip up and organize some outrage.
There are school districts in the US teaching versions of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn without a single instance of the words nigger, negro or injun right now. Tolkien's blatantly ableist depictions of persons of small stature aren't going to be spared sanitization forever.

I've had some guy tell me that Tolkien was an incredibly racist fuck the other day, the only thing I could give as an answer was a look of pity upon the poor fool. How can you be this stupid? Hell, its only ''racist'' if you disregard the entire fucking context of the LoTR universe, the Silmarillion included like how evolution has absolutely jackshit to do with anything because pretty much everything that lives is the creation of a god that is as far as we know still living on the fucking world and thus the concept of ''races'' don't even apply, at least how we irl humans perceive it since the different folks of Arda didn't evolve themselves to be what they are but were pretty much created as is. There are definitively cultural influences in his work but cultures have absolutely jackshit to do with races so I just can't get around to understand how Tolkien a dirty racist. Dwarves are literal rocks given flesh & sentience, Elves are the living toys of that universe god, Orcs are previosly mentioned elves but corrupted by sauron sugar daddy and humans are just what they are. The only way I could see these things as a sign of racism is that whoever came up with that accusation did some pretty intense mental gymnastic and disregarded every aspect of the overall story/universe that didn't support his views to promote his own at the expense of Tolkien legacy.

The arguments that I've always heard for tolkien's racism had very little to say about dwarves. They centered around orcs and wildmen being an analogue for africans/indians/eastern asians while elves were idealized europeans. The dwarf/jew comparison was usually a sidenote.

To be honest that sound ever worse an argument than what I thought it would be.

Wildmens are the descendant of the humans who decided to submit to Morgoth law but got obliterated by the early humans and now lives in the recesses of the world, the ones we see that comes back to help Sauron do so of their own will just to get their revenge on the descendant of the previously mentioned humans, they are more an exemple of how petty and shitty you become when you make vengeance the whole purpose of your nation or whatever, preferring to wallow in your own shit preparing your next raid on the dirty civilized folks, they are as far as we know of the same race than the humans of Gondors, Rohan and etc so the racism argument can be thrown out the window when it comes to them. The elves are directly inspired by the Welsh (And its well known Tolkien had a massive boner for these sheep shagger, no offense meant) but are far from being seen as an ideal race or whatnot in the story, with many problem across the entire world being caused by their arrogance and narcissism ( like the forging of the original rings which brought the war of the jewels, which in turn nearly exterminated the entire race of the elves and most of their grandest cities and affected tons of others peoples, mostly because they believed themselves to be the hottest shit and were manipulated like children) and how many of them are taking the easy way out by simply going back to the eternal land instead of helping solve the mess they created in the middle earth.

i can confirm this is more dangerous now: i had a 3x2 room with 10wooden trainingspears on each tile behind a closed door. my dwarfs trained in there colpletly geared with steel(mailshirt, breastplate, helmet, gauntles, greaves, highboots, shield, shortsword). most of them have mangled noses and ears after a while especially ears. one broke an arm. two dwarfs of the full squad went into the hospital (after 6month of training) where the doctor operated on them they died on the way into their own rooms. also maybe its just my imagination but do dwarfs train slower now? 213.142.180.79 22:43, 13 September 2015 (UTC)ME

Those parts aren't protected by any of that armor setup. That's not new at all, it's always been a thing with dangerrooms, cloaks or robes are needed to protect the facial features. Noses and ears are cartilage which don't heal in vanilla, inevitably becoming infected and in some cases bleeding perpetually, both of which will certainly kill a dwarf, and neither of which is unique to danger room injuries.
And although they were nerfed (in 2014), they weren't made any more dangerous by that nerf. It was just a reduction of skill gain per attack and a reduction in the rate of lever pulling.

Assuming that's from the wiki talk page, those guys just didn't know what they were talking about.

Morningstars do edged damage. Piercing damage isn't a thing. Adamantine morningstars are incredibly effective, like all adamantine edged weapons.
>>
>>155056491
the notion of the "danger room" is outdated and only works well in pre-43.x versions

the most recent versions have added not only armor-wear during combat, but also force-transfer between struck body parts; A hard hit to the hand can now fracture the wrist.
Also, the experience gained from doding weapon traps and other strange things has been significantly reduced.

the fastest way to train the military without sparring is to issue kill orders on wildlife.

It's a spiky ball at the end of a stick. If you're hitting with something other than the spikes you're doing it wrong.
>>
>>155066132
You can make an artificial distinction if you like, but every weapon in the game does either edge or blunt damage and every weapon in the game has an armor piercing value. The edge damage caused by a weapon with with low contact area and high pentration uses the same damage formula as one with high contact area and low penetration.
>>
>>155066191
But the ball needs to be heavy for it to be a functional weapon.

Adamantine definitely shouldn't be a good material for morningstar nor any other weapon relying on its weight to transfer energy.

Newbie question. Does it matter what clothing your militia dorf is using under armor? I have been under the impression that I needed to make all of it leather because it was better then usual cloth, but leather is annoying to get.

>>155063726
Wtf
>>
>>155066621
By that standard, adamantine swords should bounce off everything despite their edge, since they have all the weight of a nerf bat.

I think adamantine morningstars are in effect cheese graters on a stick.
>>
>>155017009
Are you sure it wasn't during the twilit hours of dawn? There's a delay between sunrise and the world being properly illuminated.
>>
>>155066531
The results of the damage when striking tissue are not the same, read up on the threads where people worked through the damage calculations.
>>
>>155066621
Then adamantine would be unsuitable for every weapon except spears, pikes and (maybe) daggers.

The material properties of adamantine make it impossibly good despite the loss of momentum that necessarily occurs when the weight of the weapon is all but removed from the equation. That affects every weapon made from adamantine; an axe loses all of the momentum that it's weight would have contributed to the attack just as much as a morningstar does. But the user's strength isn't reduced at all by using a near-weightless weapon. And adamantine is impossibly sharp and perfectly rigid. The momentum of the attack is entirely negligible, any force at all is sufficient. Superdwarvenly strong soldiers can put absurd amounts of force behind an adamantine weapon nonetheless.
>>
>>155058043
>Really? the wood is that important?
If you held a piece of black walnut wood in one hand, and a piece of pine in the other, you would immediately understand how important it is. Walnut and hickory make excellent beating sticks, while pine will splinter under the same conditions.
Featherwood AKA Balsa wood AKA basically styrofoam is the least lethal wood to use.
>>
>>155060042
Thats almost as bad as "the bunny was a crackhead"
>>
>>155067669
Yup, the combat calculation takes into account how fast the weapons are being swung, how sharp they are, how much the attack penetrates, and the properties of the target for resisting the attack.
>>
>>155067016
>Does it matter what clothing your militia dorf is using under armor?
It runs the same calculations for attack v material as armor does, it just also degrades much faster. Wool cloth is okay, plant cloth is fairly good, leather is certainly helpful, and silk can snare edged attacks very capably.
I'm a bit disappointed there isn't a way to make proper cloth armor, but yes,
clothing matters.
The ideal is a silk hood+cloak over steel armor, since the cloak will cover the face where the helmet does not.
>>
>>155067567
>weapons with different numerical properties do different things
I've read many threads about combat calculations over the years, but I think I could've figured that part out on my own. No one is arguing that, for example, spears and swords don't behave differently in combat. But they don't have different damage types. The both do edge damage. It's no different than if you claimed that mauls and war hammers had different damage types. Conflating the mechanical distinction between edge damage and blunt damage with the differing effects of the numerical properties of individual weapons is wrong. You might as well claim that short sword is a damage type, or that whip is a damage type because they have distinct behaviors in combat.

You can turn invasions off in d_init. That will stop sieges and beast attacks. Wildlife depends on where you embark. Read the quickstart guide on the wiki to figure out good starting conditions for new players.
>>
>>155068679
Mauls do flat slappy damage, war hammers do precise crushy damage, because a maul is like slapping someone with a cardboard box full of books, while a war hammer is a large ball peen hammer.

A spear is large enough that the narrow edge and higher penetration means it pierces deeper into a target. It isn't written out in game or set with a flag, but mechanically that's what it is.
>>
>>155069180

Start on an island devoid of civilization or that has only others dwarves and be part of the nearest/biggest faction as to lower the chance of getting nobles immigrants, when creating the world put savagery and numbers of beasts to the lowest, mineral occurrence to frequent or everywhere , start with a premade embark profile (like gorny easy peasy start) and get as much seeds as you can with the spare points. The others factors are random if I remember well, so either make some basic militia or just a basic bridge & moat to keep the occasional werebeasts out.

I suppose that pretty much how you can make it easier, also you can use a tileset if the acsii ain't to your taste

>>
>>155068679
So you mean like real life? If I hit you with a stick with a blade on the end vs a blade with a stick on the end you're still being slashed, just as if I thrust a stick with a blade on the end vs a blade with a stick on the end at you you're still getting stabbed. There's no different "damage types" in real life, the distinction is the action made by the wielder. It's the same with DF. "piercing" and "slashing" aren't two seperate damage types, but it may be more effective to stab with a weapon rather than slash and vice versa.

Anyway, what I meant when I asked if an adamantine morningstar would be effective I was simply asking whether or not the extra cutting power outweighed the non-existent blunt damage, because I was already aware that morningstars were effectively a ball-with-lots-of-daggers on a stick. I got my answer, so all is well.

No. The best training weapons are the ones made from the weakest wood by the least skilled dwarfs.
Elven shaped-wood weapons are going to be - or have they already been? - made to have a real edge.
>>
>>155070414
Describing the combat effects of weapons with different properties isn't going to make piercing a damage type. The high penetration value of a spear doesn't make the damage type of its stabs stop being edged and become piercing. It's low contact area doesn't make its damage type stop being edged. The fact that attacks with different contact areas and pentrations behave differently in combat is irrelevant to the question of their damage types. The question "what is the damage type of a spear's stab attack?" has one right answer. Edge.
>>
>>155069180

>caverns
honestly not really a problem
I feel like people exaggerate the threat of the surroundings. Wildlife takes ages to do anything. They're never really a legimate threat anyway, a minor annoyance at their worst (stuff like giant keas). There are horror stories about GCS and shit but they only spawn 1 at a time and are likely to wander around forever before coming anywhere near your fort. Don't be a pussy, just have an axedwarf permatraining in the barracks and send him to deal with anything that wanders to close.
>>
>>155071413
>like real life
No, I'm just talking the game mechanics. Every attack has one of two types defined in the raws for the weapon. Sources of physical trauma in real life obviously aren't so simple as to be placed into two distinct categories.
>>
>>155071938
Weapons fron the elves do more damage than training weapons.

They will absolutely fuck your dwarves up, especially if they are untrained.
>>
>>155072554
Saying "small contact area with high penetration" is exactly as right, and calling it "piercing" gets the same information across.

The damage done by a spear, a pick, a dagger, an axe, and a sword is all edged, but the results of being hit by them is far from the same. It's common enough in a wide range of game systems that the shorthand of stabbing, slashing, hacking, cutting, crushing, piercing, slicing, smashing, etc all bring to mind certain things.

>>155072992
>aren't so simple
Yeah, the damage done by different weapons in game isn't covered by "edged" and "blunt" sufficiently.

I would much rather face off against a maul user than a pick user, I'd rather have a great big fat dwarf get hit by someone with a short sword than a spear, and I favor axes in most situations because I like lopping off body parts.

Spears do not do that like axes do, "they're both ATTACK:EDGE!" doesn't cover it nearly well enough.

And all of that is perfectly relevant if someone wants to do a comparative analysis weapon efficacy in different scenarios. If someone wants to know the damage type of an attack, to determine the suitability of adamantine for that weapon for example, the possible values are binary. Blunt and edge. Which binary classification happens to give you every bit of the information you need to know to determine what materials will be most useful for that weapon.

Though a morning star isn't good for candy.

Similarly if you made an attack with a high contact area and low penetration like a cheese grater, or even something like a morning star, there are better materials.
>>

It started because of a debate over its efficiency, and people got so buttmad over it that all you had to do was type "3x3" and people would shit themselves.
>>

That's wrong. Adamantine is the best material for morningstars, and for every other edged weapon. It doesn't make a difference to that fact, but they don't have a large contact area, the contact area of morningstar bash is 10.

Is there a way to find out what rooms a dwarf is assigned to?

As I shift jobs around, I keep getting dwarves with two bedrooms, and I'd like to free up one of them.

Also, was there a change to seeds somewhere? I remember I used to always have hundreds upon hundreds of Plump Helmet Spawn after the first year. Now I'm about five years in and I still get spammed with 'needs plump helmet spawn' messages. I'm not cooking the seeds or the plump helmets. Just brewing them.
>>
>>155110483
There are seed limits in either init or d_init.

The defaults are 200 for specific seeds and 3000 for total seeds, everything above that gets quietly deleted.
>>
How fun, the latest version makes giant cave spiders a threat even to experienced adventurers.

No longer will they only try to repeatedly bite your head through your helmet and fail. No, they've learnt to keep the head grab and simply shake you to death.
>>
>>155110483
Dont allow barrels in seed stockpile. When new seeds are generated by brewery/dorf eating plumphelmet, hauler grab the barrel with all the seeds and carry it through all fort to pickup seeds, making it unavailable for planters → spam of 'needs plump helmet spawn'.
Also use linked stockpile, one 'take from everywhere', another 'from links only', linked to first one.
>>
>>155111812
That... explains a lot, really. Thanks

Why the linked stockpile though?
>>
>>155110483
Check how many seeds you actually have. Chances are the problem is something else.

There was a change to hauling - instead of picking up a sock at the end of the map, moving back to the stockpile in the heart of the fortress, and then going all the way back to pick up the second sock, dwarves now take both socks at once.
They also take containers and carry them with them when picking up multiple things that are too big. So you'd see a dwarf take a barrel with 5 apples to pick up 7 more apples and then put the barrel back in the stockpile (with the old method, the dwarf would pick up each apple on its own).

With seeds this leads to the following problem:

Say you have 100 seeds in 10 barrels, and your farm needs new planting. The game generates 5 jobs for dwarves to pick up seeds and put them to the farm.

First dwarf comes, picks up the barrel and moves to the farm. Next dwarf wants to pick up the same barrel and can't find it:
"I can't do job - no plump helmet spawn found"

A solution is to make a second small seed stockpile that doesn't take containers.

>>
>>155112860
You've got it backwards on one point. The old behavior was to carry a container to the item being stored. The new(er) behavior is to carry the item to the container. This was one of the biggest changes in the jobs priorities update a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it didn't end cancellation spam issue related to containers, because when a dwarf targets a container for a store item job the container becomes inaccessible for other tasks (such as retrieving items for workshop jobs) even though the container isn't being moved.

>>
>>155138543
I can explain SS13 with Dorf Fort, but I can't really do the reverse.

>>155136935
Two questions.
Do you have imagination? Do you have an appreciation for story?
Right now Dorf is basically a world generator. It makes entire fantasy settings from scratch every time you generate a world. Not only this, it tracks an insane amount of detail within this world: the personalities and relatonships of every character onscreen, the course of wars between civilizations, the population of fruit bats in that little forest out in the boonies, how much copper is still under the Hills of Harmony, etc.
Its absolutely autistic depth is its main draw. Interacting with the worlds it develops and watching the world react.
Or interacting with one particular dwarf and seeing how he reacts.

The potential for stories is the main draw. The other main draw is figuring out how the games mechanics coalesce into the hilarity that is the games operating procedure.

Like how cats would lick themselves clean and subsequently die of alcohol poisoning. Completely unintended.

There's no hard and fast narrative that the game tracks. If you go into Legends mode, it tells you *every* event of possible signifigance that has happened in that world. There are utilities that make parsing this data dump more... feasible.

Otherwise, in fort mode, from the base menu [v] lets you inspect your dwarves, and hitting [z] from the inspection will bring up the profile page for that dwarf. There are, of course, subprofiles. Pay attention to the UI, aheh. Be patient.

I want pros and cons of a 3x3 staircase. Is it supposed to be just so it's easier to find or is there something else. The cons would be it takes longer to dig or something? Why is it such a meme, is it really just because it was argued over? How was it argued over?

Alright, I will attempt to make this as short as possible:

3x3 staircases are argued to work better with Dwarf pathfinding and also make staircases less crowded, hence making dwarves move faster.
People argued about the middle tile, the movement speed of Dwarves on the different types of stairs, the visual appeal of 2x2 vs 3x3, and all sorts of other dumb shit.

Yes, people really sperged out over something this simple that much. I believe it really spurred on a bit after the DF2014 update, which brought a huge influx of new people, many of which were dumbshits who heard about the "super seekrit 4chan /dfg/ club", got mad about old inside jokes, and generally made /dfg/ really shitty for a while by trying to force memes and deliberately causing arguments.

TL;DR, people argued about it a whole fucking lot.

Programmer with a crapload of experience regarding this sort of pointless thing.

Chances are that both of them will be more efficient in different cases.
When lots of dorfs are using the stairs, 3x3 is probably a lot more efficient.
On the other hand, 2x2 may be more efficient if you're measuring your dorf routes on a tile by tile basis and have spent a bunch of time optimizing the locations of your things to suit it.
That said, I don't know if I'll ever see a design where 2x2 would be preferable.

How long do your forts tend to last typically, anons?

I find I always start a fort intending to take it to 10+ years but I always get bored at around 4-5 years. That's usually around when all my industries are either automated or no longer relevant, my military is fully geared out, versatile and highly trained, all the rooms and such are dug out and furnished and my fps is sitting around ~15.
>>
>>155173063
When I play them I usually run them out a full 10~15 years because I like to set them up so things run on autopilot and I can just let them derp around without paying attention.
>>
>>155172658
Yup.
>>
When you play dwarf fortress what are you drinking?:

A. Pop (or soda if you're from america)
B. Nyquil (or other cough syrups/flu medications)
C. Beer (or dwarven ale)
D. Water
E. Other
>>
>>155173063
My current fort is about to start its 12th year, and expect to keep playing it at least until the first artifact release. I did a few 3-5 year forts before that. My longest 40.24 fort was 14 years. My longest 34.11 fort (and longest ever) was 41 years. Most of my forts before that were less than 20, but I had a couple go longer. .40 made the fps issue a lot worse than it was before, so old forts take either a lot of patience or very deliberately conservative design.

I like playing for making things, not killing things.

I don't disable invaders and such because it feels like cheating.

So I usually die in like year 2 or 3 when a megabeast or siege first shows up.

I've been playing since df didn't have z-levels and I still do this.
>>
>>155176341
Why not just set your pop cap to 75ish? That stops sieges, but still allows beast attacks, so you don't have to worry about a goblin gangbang and the siege cleanup minigame, but still have some threats to worry about. And 75 is plenty for every industry and a military.

What are some good ways to get your adventurer out of caves?
I fell into a pit below a dark fortress and somehow survived, but these spiders are getting scary.

I thought I could build an emergency exit staircase, but for some reason I can't properly start sites in these caves. Right now I'm heading towards dwarven sites in hopes of finding a tunnel there.
>>
>>155180426
You can appoint anyone you want to be mayor. My forts typically have a mayor-for-life just to avoid having to reassign rooms whenever an election is held.

>As a bard you're supposed to tell stories and sing songs about people who fought fearsome beasts, not actually go out and do it yourself.
What happened is I was moving across some town and got ambushed.
It was me, the female singer (gave her a shield and silver war hammer for defense, just in case), and a human pikeman who was new to the troupe.

As soon as the ambush happens, the giant alligator man jumped straight at the girl.
She did well defensively, at first.
He knocked her down and bit off her arms, despite her attempts to shield herself.
While this is happening, I'm trying to injure the manbeast's leg so I can get him away from her and escape without it catching up.

Suddenly, I get nausea from the sun, due to cave dwelling for so long (haven't yet finished my exposure sessions), giving the gator man the chance he needs to finish off the girl.

Oh, by the way, the pikeman is now nowhere to be seen, since he was running away while she was getting torn to shreds.

So the manbeast tore her to shreds while I tried in vain to break/sever one of his legs with my great axe (despite my crippling nausea).

Now his attention's turned toward me, and I know there's no way I can beat him.
So I decide to run toward the nearest home to try to seek help.
Unfortunately, this was the west side of town, which was pretty much devoid of buildings.

So yeah, my full iron armor helped a lot, but he bit off one of my arms anyway and mauled off my face.

The only downside is that if you aren't quick enough with your reassignment after the election your interim mayor might make a mandate, which isn't revoked when he loses the job. I'm not sure if they're ever revoked, I've never seen one go away. I haven't had maby opportunities to test it though. You won't be able to see the mandate on your noble screen if that happens. Other than that there are no downsides.

yes, bodies rot very quickly, just like real life. this is a serious problem in the confined space of a fortress, resulting in "miasma feels tunnels."

partial just relates to the state of decomposition, compared to a fully skeletonized body; if a "partial skeleton" is raised, you get a zombie.

Combat logs always refer to creatures by their creature and profession names. There is no clear reason. Just like with the translated names, it seems to be entirely arbitrary how the game refers to a creature in a given ituation.

Although I must say that just using the creature and profession name is a good way to keep the logs short, and it gives them a higher literary quality.

Yes the vanilla tileset is just fine. If you want to know what something is just use k, or check the wiki, which also uses vanilla. When you get a bit used to it you can start to find some colour sets if you don't like the default colours or just want something different.

Some people use graphical tilesets (as opposed to ASCII) but I find that this forces a certain view on you, instead of you developing your own view. In vanilla you see a dwarf and you can read his/her description and your mind makes an image of that dwarf, but with a graphical tileset this doesn't happen, you see a sprite which represents how the tilesets' creator looks at dwarves, so you substitute someone elses fantasy for your own.
