Start with the basics. Yes, from 00.

Take a notepad and write the shortcuts down. You need to know them unless your goal is to stay a deviantart-tier artist.

Don't just watch these tutorials but try to actually do something on your own. Did you just learn about how to put a cube in your scene? Make a house. You learned to unwrap that cube? Unwrap your house. Your house looks like shit? Start over and git gud.

Learn about different modeling techniques, from sculpting to single vertex extrusion and use the one that fits you.

The blender cloud has a pretty good rigging course (and courses about other subjects). You have to pay for it but you can easily find it in other places.
If you're serious about wanting to learn though I would encourage you to pay for it, it'll motivate you to actually do something instead of procrastinating and watching tutorials to pretend that you're making progress.

Just draw your own pictures to replace the head. You can do that for every body part. Other than that you just need good topology for deformation, which just means more quads in areas where folds happen IE an elbow folds so put more quads there compared to a forearm.

The blender foundation is always working with actual professional artists in order to improve their software. You can't compare the two.
If I felt bad about pirating Photoshop I would use Krita instead of Gimp.

Unless you specifically want to avoid hardcoding it's better just to use the room editor. You need rooms one way or another unless you're trying to make your life more difficult by doing everything in one room. Generally though, if you don't want to use the editor you use shit like room_add() and just put in some generator objects with room_instance_add().

So, I was doing Shaun tutorial but the difference is that I tried making the sprites a bit less square than he did and I came into a problem: how do I make the SPRITE sub-images get selected for the explosion?

I had to create 3 spr_deadplayer1,2 + obj_deadplayer1,2,3 etc for this and it's obviously the wrong way. I tried for 1h messing around and I only managed to crash the game or have the spr_deadplayer with all the animations playing it non-stop. Lately I've been pretty depressed and tired so I feel like I need a change of pace. I want to try some new lingos with game libraries for fast results, might even join the jam if I find something I'll enjoy working with, so I have a bunch of questions.

How is LOVE and Lua? I've read that Lua supports fully functional programming. Is this true? Is it good? What is it like compared to, let's say Haskell?

Anyone made some games in Lisp? Any good libraries for it besides SDL and OpenGL binds?

What's the state of gamedev in python? Is PyGame still around or are there new better libraries nowadays?

Any other suggestions for fun gamedev languages and libraries?

1. Interface looks like a GTK sample project, and viewport navigation is "let's do everything differently, but fuck usability!"
2. modeling tools are Maya 7 tier
3. rigging is physically painful
4. fbx is broken (not their fault though, still shit)

So a platformer? There are tons of tutorials for that, use google. It's not hard, the hardest part is probably doing gravity but even that's relatively easy.

No experience with Unity but 2d game level sizes are not a problem these days since we have a crapton of RAM. If you experience a problem anyway, my first idea would be that you could just cut your map into smaller pieces and preload the the next one in the background when player gets close.

As I see you are slowly getting enough knowledge for your dream game. With ColorFall, you basically learned how to fully explore one single mechanic. That is good, very good. You didn't let the feature creep get you, you stuck to your plan and executed it well. With Bunny, you did the same, and this time you experimented with 3D.

From that, the next logical step would be to put that 3D into motion. Find a game idea, where you have to control some 3D character in a 3D world to achieve some goal. Pushing boxes around to solve puzzles, something basic like that. Or have an endless shooter where you basically just try to survive endless waves of enemies.

It might also have something to do with the area you're applying in. What the other dude said. Aseprite is imho one of the best programs for pixel art, including animation. It's also open source so if you're not afraid of compiling from source then you can get it for free, not like it's that expensive anyways(support the dev if you like it).

From other pixel-art focused software there's Graphics Gale which I haven't tried but people say it's good. Paint.NET is like MS Paint improved a hundred fold (not sure if it supports animation).

Otherwise more or less any painting software can do pixel art as well since it's so simple. You can use photoshop but it's not worth it to buy photoshop for pixel art alone since you would be using just a tiny fraction of the tools. Krita is my awesome, free and can do animation as well. Gimp works too if you don't mind the clumsy interface and it probably has an animation plugin.

One of the most popular animation software in the animation industry is TVPaint which is paid and I haven't used it so idk. And there's also Toonz, now i think it's called Open Toonz which is the animation software they used at Studio Ghibli and now they released it for free. Those would be a bit over the top for pixel art imho.

Those are your options more or less. It's mostly about what you find comfortable since almost every program has enough tools for pixel art. Many of these are free so try and see what you like.

I almost forgot. Spine is an awesome software for quick animation, you can rig a sprite in it and it can kinda sorta twists and moves it for you using some image transformation magic. It's really fucking cool. I know there are other programs that let you do skeletal animation but this one is on a whole other level and the animations look much more natural than in any other skeletal animation software I've seen. Pic related was made in Spine.

Well I'm just a beginner when it comes to animation so I use Krita and Aseprite since the tools there are pretty basic, pretty much the same as if you were doing it with a lightbox. I like learning by doing everything by hand.

But one really cool thing I found is 2D animation with blender, there's a plugin for it called Grease Pencil. You pretty much lock into an orthogonal view and use planes that you draw over as your sprites. It let's you deform them really nicely for animatin and you can set up a whole scene by putting planes behind/in front of each other and you can also make use of all the 3D capability for example having a 2D animation inside a 3D room. There actually isn't much free software for vectors. Only thing I know is Inkscape and that doesn't do animation AFAIK. However, Krita, while it has some vector support now, it is supposed to have way better vectors especially for art in the next full release but that may be up to a year from now since 3.0 just happened.

Got "indoor" areas working. When indoors (ie in a dungeon) you can't fly or cast the jump spell, even if you cast fly outside and then enter the dungeon.

I also found and fixed a bug that wasn't preserving velocity when loading, so if you jumped and loaded, you'd just fall straight down.

Next I want to figure out a good way to link portals between levels so that you'll spawn at the appropriate location when the level loads (rather than simply at the first PlayerStart location).

Well the main reason is because that's how it works in M&M6. But the Fly spell trivializes a lot of the game since you can just fly past things instead of dealing with them, so in the event that there is a large cavernous dungeon, I'd want players to have to go through it rather than skipping it.

The demo will probably just be this 1 dungeon though, so I guess it doesn't matter. It was mainly just for learning.

are you kidding? did you use the internet? newgrounds was the safest, majority were "tributes" because newgrounds creators skewed young and were feeling all the righteous patriotism of the adults around them.
