The localisation is bad, but honestly the original's writing was so horrendous that it hardly even matters.

If anything the localisation improved the writing (not the story, that shit is unsalvageable). Before people bite my head off over saying that, you have to realize that the writing -- prose, the way characters talk, word choice, all that kind of stuff -- is absolutely abysmal in the Japanese version, even to someone with a shallow understanding of the language. It's so juvenile and embarrassingly cringeworthy to read at points that it easily ranks alongside the worst Light Novels you can think of in terms of writing; we have a medieval war simulator where characters act and talk like they're Japanese high-schoolers straight out of SAO or Asterisk or some other bottom of the barrel garbage. This is a problem even Awakening, for the most part anyways, didn't have (although Awakening still had other issues). It varied from character to character (characters like Severa or Zero or Sakura were in my opinion by far and away the worst for this, whereas ones like Marx and Kagerou were still pretty bad sometimes but not fucking unbearable to listen to or read dialogue from like those three)

The localization did improve the prose, for better or worse. Not by much mind you, but characters don't talk as absolutely stupid anymore, at least.

It comes down to how characters speak. When a game is set in medieval times, you expect for characters to not talk like they're modern teenagers.

For the most part Awakening wasn't bad with this, surprisingly. Not that there weren't offenders still (Severa was still awful, Tharja and Noire were pretty bad, Cherche was obnoxious) but characters like Frederick or Lucina (in the Japanese version anyways before they turned her into a FATE oneliner dispenser in the localization) talked like what could be perceived as normal for the time. It wasn't like Fates, where practically every line of dialogue reads like it was written by a preteen fanfiction author.

You have to keep in mind I'm not saying they just made quips and stuff. I'm talking flat out having characters going up to their commanding officers and going "HEY DUDE HOW'S IT HANGING" in rough terms.

Not that the localization isn't riddled with it still, but it's a very little bit better in regards to characters like Silas at least, who talked like the most obnoxious friend possible in the Japanese version but actually seemingly show Kamui a bit of respect in the localisation.

Ironically most of the characters people find obnoxious, like Camilla or Severa, are ones that didn't get altered much from their original incarnation.

Camlla isn't changed as much as people seem to think (outside the voice I guess). The obsession over Kamui, the lewd innuendos, the constant references to her own physique, the yandere tendencies, all of that is still present in the original.

You need to remember that localization isn't just copypasting translated dialogue. Camilla's 'ara ara' stint isn't really a thing in English as far as localisers are usually concerned, so they tend to translate the trait to being motherly and other things of that nature instead. I guess they retconned in a crush for Silas or something too but that goes basically nowhere past the few lines of the support it's contained in.
