Except Awakening was ridiculously half-assed gameplay-wise and removed a good number of mechanics like Rescuing, Canto, and objectives besides Rout and Kill Boss that a lot of people liked about the older games. It even regressed in regards to things like same-turn reinforcements, which people agreed were a poor move in FE6 and hadn't been present in the series again until Awakening.

All it added mechanically was Pairup, which was a completely broken mess in that game and took until Fates to make it less stupid (although it's still OP).

Canto was fine, it's the mounted classes themselves that have always been OP.

The theory behind it is that mounted classes have more movement but worse combat that unmounted ones, but this pretty much never applies when mounts are strong enough to fight well anyways.

Also dismounting was eh. The way RD handled it was fine, with just giving them a movement penalty indoors.

You know what Awakening took away that I missed the most about the other games? Those text scrolls explaining what the fuck was happening between missions. Helped a lot with the pacing in most of the other games, whereas Awakening just gave the middle finger to pacing altogether.

Completely discarding story would give almost nothing to care about because everyone would be completely faceless, just like in the first three games. Would you honestly care about the end of chapter 5 in FE4 if you had no story? How would you explain the sudden drop to using much weaker units without it? Lacking story only serves to bring an SRPG down.

Going from place to place without any clue as to why or how you're going there would suck and completely breaks immersion. You honestly might as well just play Advance Wars if you don't care about story. And even IT has a story to some extent. I honestly feel as if most RPGs would barely have anything to stand on without a story. Immersion would be gone, care for anything but numbers would be gone, and you'd be left with a pretty barebones experience overall.

That's basic logic, if you consider that a source.

From an efficiency standpoint, none of the kids are currently even considered for anything because of what you need to do to recruit them in the first place, and if they were they would all be bottom or close to bottom tier anyways because of these restrictions, where they'd either get sandbagged to death by redudnancy or sandbagged to death by their father being shit. If they were just recruited, they'd be tiered like normal units. Sure, you could argue that the kids have a high chance of being redundant as first-gens anyways, which is always a possibility, but at least it would give them a fighting chance unlike now.

Sure, but the cast feels so empty in Fates, though.

It's partially due to the kids and partially due to 90% of the first-gens being either a Royal or a retainer to a Royal. It just feels like a small world.

Multiple generations is just one of those things that rarely works out. You need a lot of time and focus on each generation to really flesh things out, and games tend to keep moving along to focus on the gameplay or plot. I'll play the devil's advocate here and be the reasonable one to say: If you really want to judge Fire Emblem: Awakening just play it yourself, don't be the sheep commanded by an idiotic shepherd.

Awakening is not a bad game at all, it has its own set of flaws but overall it's enjoyable if you look for an enjoyable game. Fire Emblem Awakening was supremely popular and it singlehandedly put FE on a spotlight it had never been before. Where there is smoke, there is fire, so Awakening did do a lot of things right.

Much of Awakening's hate, fueled primarily by older fans of the series, is due to the fact that IS went to some lengths to "casualise" the gameplay in order to attract a new audience, since the older audience that remained was literally not enough to support the franchise financially.

On the other hand, they went to some lengths to address this with Conquest, which was obviously designed with the older games in mind, Birthright being for fans of Awakening, and Revelations being a rather sloppy attempt at joining the two I guess.

Granted Nosferatu was always good, but previous games tried to offset how good it was by making it inaccurate and heavy as shit, as well as making it hard to obtain many of them. Since Awakening has no weight system, you can buy Nosferatu whenever you want, AND you can forge any inaccuracy issues off of them, A N D the class gets Vengeance which is the best and most reliable proc skill in the game, Dark Mage is easily the best class in the game, at least in the maingame. This makes otherwise-subpar units like Tharja and Henry COMPLETE MONSTERS for no other reason than being a fucking Dark Mage
