What are some good X-Com like games?
>>
>>153635149
Which xcom games have you played including modded versions and which ones did you enjoy or not.
>>
>>153635198

I don't like the OG X-Com game not my taste
>>
>>153635319
Well then your screwed. I feel like I already said this, so I apologize if I'm just throwing the same opinion at you again. Fact is, most xcom like games are inspired by the original and try to be like it. Modern XCOM clones are a future reality.
Probably gonna have to wait till Xenonauts 2 or Phoenix point.
>>
>>153635471

Okay then how is Xenonaughts? do I have to refit the soldiers after every single mission?
>>
>>153635471
>>153635149

There's that cowboy game, hard west or somthing like that. Dunno if it's good though.
>>
>>153635581
No you don't, though I don't have to recall doing that in x-com either.
The game has some more resemblance to modern xcoms. There is a cover system, and the starting squad at least is only 6 people. Still uses TUs. Most people say they realized part through way they could have been playing x-com instead. Don't really know how this criticism applies to someone who didn't enjoy x-com.

>>153635730
Yeah, heard kinda mixed reviews on that one.

OG x-com EU was fun back when I played it as a 12 year old, same with terror from the deep. Tried booting it up again but the gameplay is too annoying. They made good streamlining improvements in EU and Long War brought back the clusterfuck of items if you are into that. XCOM2 made most items completely useless since all the AI are so one dimensional.

But I'm over OG x-com now. X1 EU/EW captured some of the feel again with that creepy ambience, and adds fun characters like Bradford, Shen and Vahlen. X2 is a huge step down when it comes to feel of the game, and the characters are way less original, but are passable. I was unfortunately hoping for an exapnded strategy map in XCOM2, pretty disappointed with the 0.50c ipad game we got instead.
>>
>>153635149
i know that Hard West and Skyshine's bedlam are turn based tactics but besides that i have no knowledge about them

Invisible Inc is a turn based stealth tactics, its very fun and i like the corporate espionage theme

Banner Saga also a turn based tactics with a story, the story is interesting but i never finished because xcom 2 came out

hopefully you might find something out of those 4
>>
>>153636412
A completely free mobile game (fallout shelter) had more strategy than XCOM2.

I would have liked to see something of that nature in XCOM2, where invading ayys in the base were handled by staff. Could have been the original style ayys too, set up for suicide attacks.

The UFO games (Aftermath, Aftershock and Afterlight) are pretty decent. Combat's real time with pause but the strategic side is the style we all know and love.

There is no good reason for either of those weapon mods not to be in there. What's funny is that I've even recommended MP on account of it being virtually the only mod which tackles T3 successfully to several people so I thought it was already in there. Slapping 'em in now, thanks man.

The LW Perk Pack actually is in, just under gameplay features rather than class mod because I think it does enough to classify it as a minor overhaul rather than a custom class. Same with the Laser Pack. Kind of stupid now that I think about it.

As to the scarcity of class mods I actually used to ask specifically about classes and voice packs in the general a lot because that's what the list was missing, but nobody knew any they thought worth including so I just stuck to the ones I had tried out myself. Same with voice packs. No reason to keep it that way though.

What do the Rogue and Specops do? I haven't played with them, are they balanced or just a fun-run type of deal?
>>
>>153637075

You need this class in your thingy

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=659582342&searchtext=Bruiser

I haven't played with the new SpecOps class(the guy remade it when the LWPerk pack came out) but with the old one it was a stealth based class that could basically go behind enemy lines and slowly take down ayys one by one without losing concealment.
>>
>>153637351
Dope, how does the Bruiser play? Tanky close range brawler type of deal? Updating it right now so could put him in
>>

I'm on the fence about SpecOps and Paragon, SpecOps sounds blatantly broken because being allowed to re-use concealment for anything except recon is an immensely powerful tool and Paragon because it's a pretty big thing to include. I'll hold off a little bit until more people chime in on whether it's good or not, or I get a chance to try it out!

I want Bradford to actually pilot the avenger to an ayy homeworld and rek their shit like he said he would.

If you end up installing the entire modlist without doing any kind of counterbalancing, you're going to end up in a weird place. If you feel like you're getting demolished there are other places to start than just raising soldier count though, I find that a lot of the time that just leads to massive steamroll. The difference between 6 and 8 soldiers to play with is staggering.
>>
>>153661965
4 soldiers is fine. If you want to make it a bit easier without going overboard, try one or a couple of these on for size:

- Buff sword damage by 1 across the board
- Buff halfcover to grant 30 defense
- Buff full-cover to grant 45 defense
- Buff Aid Protocol to grant 30 defense to reflect the halfcover buff
- Buff disorient to now apply a 30 aim malus (This also applies to Sectoid mindspin disorient, so not completely broken)
- Buff Repeaters and Hairtriggers by 5% and 10% respectively
- Buff Blademaster to +4 melee damage
- Remove Reaper paintrain damage malus
- Removed Civilians -10 defense malus on terror missions
- Allow utility slots on kevlar to alleviate low tactical flexibility early on

So, I'm trying to play piratez since my cpu decided to start cooking if I put any actual load on it.

What am I supposed to be doing on this watchtower mission? I can't enter the tower and the guard appears to be a harmless dummy.

Also, is boredom really a good reason to throw a black-powder bomb at a squadmate and turn 1/3 of my squad hostile, 5 turns in? Are they always this ADHD?

PirateZ method of keeping you moving is morale drain. Everyone's morale starts at 100, and then drops everyturn until it's below their bravery. Once it's below their bravery it starts to recover.
I know what they are going for, but it definitely feels a bit extreme at times, definitely early game where you only have 6 people and need to be careful.
Killing gives a large morale boost to the entire squad. The battleflag can be used to restore morale. If you feel it's a bit extreme you can bump it down a bit by modifying the PirateZ_Armors.rul file.
Bravery is also a trainable stat.

As for the watchtower, never done that mission. What did the mission description say?

It basically said, 'whee, watchtower in the middle of nowhere is an easy target, just that robot to deal with, but maybe we can trick it'

It's a woodland map with a little 3-storey tower and what looks like a robot stood next to it. It acts like a piece of terrain though and I either can't access the tower or I can but I'm too much of a retarded newbie to figure out how the door works. Well there was this bug in the original orginal x-com that automatically set the difficulty down to beginner after the first mission. So all the fans complained the game was to easy. So TFTD was supposed to step up the difficulty, based off of the previous difficulties that no one had actually played. At least that's my theory.
>>
>>153671374
I can't target it though, that's why I said it was like terrain. I do have one black-powder bomb left, I suppose i could try that.
>>
>>153672691
Any projectile weapon or bomb will do it. Weapons like the chainsaw and hammer also can target terrain.

Yeah clearing floors can be rough if you don't have good armor. Until I get stuff that will actually keep people alive I go for light armor that gives bonuses to TUs, stamina, and energy recovery so that I can sprint through close quarters and clear them quickly.
Though, if you didn't ally with the mutant alliance you could skip progroms if you wanted to.
>>
>>153688842
Yeah, in beta .98b you start the game alligned with them and have to do progroms right away. However you also started with a nice ship that could carry 14 people. In .99 you start the game with your measly 6 man sqaud but don't have to do progroms.
I'm still not quite certain what the benefits of being in the mutant alliance are in .99.
>>
>>153688842
>>153687965
Oh also if you aren't already, consider using smoke grenades.
>>
>>153690956
I just run smokes without any specialized gear. As long as you steadily advance and they don't have terrible stamina it isn't hard to keep people on their feet. You can use consumables that remove stun damage.

Why are LWPP rangers so god damn broken? Why are the LWPP classes in general so god damn broken? You'd have to double enemy counts for this shit to be even remotely balanced, as is they can easily crit twice per turn through fullcover for up to 16 damage. Consistently and without risk, it's crazy. Pic related is pushing on 200 kills while most of the others aren't even in the triple digits, it's like critfantry all over again

Until they're Brigadiers. Then you can light em up->OW. With the right perks you land four shots, period.
Granted it takes time and all, but still.
Two Brigadier rangers could very well solo everything everywhere forever.

On that note, has anyone ever missed a shot after taking grazing fire?
I swear either the tooltip is misleading or it doesn't work the way it says it should.
>>
>>153693128
Get all the ABA shit. The full ABA set + ghost ceilings keep LWPP balanced
>>
>>153696028
Tried ABA but can't understand the hype and I never have, I may be wrong but I stuck out an L/I campaign and most of it consists of variety for the sake of variety like "look at this wacky unit and its wacky abilities" rather than looking at what's missing in the aliens unit lineup and adding that. Some of the enemies end up being freebies while others demand you to build around them completely.

For all of the comparisons to LW people make it has a fundamentally different design philosophy and it's just not what I'm looking for. Then again I need to stop going into an overhaul mod and immediately going "how does this stack up to LW" when the reality is that LW took years to make and still had its own flaws.

Anyone have any Ironman Impossible tips for Enemy Within?

I just got totally shafted on a bomb mission because of a tired mistake followed by a smoke grenade's path changing as I clicked and not going where it was needed.

Also, are there any unofficial bug fixes and patches? I'm getting very tired of enemies getting seen while shooting that weren't seen when I was moving the shooter into position, enemies ghosting in and out of rooms without having to use doors or windows when it's covered by fog of war, sometimes not getting flanking shots even after the piece of cover an enemy is behind has been completely destroyed.

Have they taken any damage? Are they standing in smoke?

No, and no. We basically walked up to the outpost, and the guards ran out past us because it was dark, so I coshed them. I only just started, so I don't know if they'd recover, so I took their weapons off them. While a couple more swabs went inside, I left them outside because I'm retarded about TU and item swaps, and one suddenly keeled over a couple of turns later. Then I coshed the last person, who had no LOS to her even if it wasn't dark, and the mission ended.

Yeah I'm not quite sure. There is a white bar that fills up in the same place that the health bar is. This is stun damage, and once it fills up to or past a person's current health they go unconscious. Next time check to see if it's filling up on someone. If it is, and you don't know why, try to post some screenshots of the persons stats and inventory and what map they are on, and I'll try to find a conclusive answer.

Because they're limited to terror missions, without mods.
Lids can also appear if a certain dark event activates and they're guaranteed on the psi gate mission.
Zerkers can pretty much only be seen in one mission per campaign, possibly two.
I've seen them in an Avenger defense but I was running the Alien Pack, which changes around some pods.

Guys, I really want the original sectoids from XCOM: LW back. There was always something so fun about killing those squishy little meatsacks... XCOM 2 got it all wrong by turning them into these fanged, man-sized monsters, and while subsequently dampening their combat abilities, no less.

Is there a mod to put the original sectoids back in the game, yet?
>>
>>153798814
We almost did but than the modder went full autist
>>
>>153798814
>while subsequently dampening their combat abilities
sectoids in X2 are stronger, the game just gimps them by making them appear alone early. A pod of 3 or 4 sectoids early would wreck squads.
>>
>>153799359
this, it was always their mind merge + psi panic combo that started the disaster chain, a lone sectoid in long war is a joke.
>>
>>153799270

What happened?

>>153799359

Well yeah, that's the point: When you're that early into the game, fighting more than one or two sectoids at a time would be tantamount to suicide because both of them are likely to succeed in their mind-control. Especially with A Better Advent and Better Pods/+ already on the table, you wouldn't want to deal with that more than once per pod. The problem is, that you essentially NEED these mods to make them even somewhat good, since otherwise they'll never do anything except waste turns reanimating corpses.
>>
>>153799846

Can mind-fray also get some love up in this bitch?

All I'm saying is that sure, the new sectoids are more durable, and have access to abilities that are "theoretically" more powerful. The new mind control ability is especially good, and they did get psi-panic again, which is great too. That said, because many of its abilities are so much less practical, and also because the AI does not consistently rely on its best abilities, I find the sectoids in 2 are basically useless most of the time. I really preferred them when they were much more simple. They were much deadlier that way. A lone sectoid in 2 is just as much of a joke as its counterpart from 1, despite having better abilities and more health, which IMO is just unacceptable.

When is the expansion. I can't even bring myself to end the game, it's just not XCOM. I don't feel like I'm fighting anymore, it's just an old fashioned turkey shoot. Even on Ironman, legend.
>>
What are you guys opinions on the new X-coms? My opinion is that the first suffer from bullshit difficulty over normal, and retard-easy on or below normal. One squadwipe and you might as well restart because there's almost no way to recoup a loss.

The second is far better, but has the same flaws to a smaller extent, I really do not like how the aliens seem to move and shoot under completely different rules than your own troops (extra movement phases, bullshit abilities that makes them do many things in a turn, and so on).

The old X-coms were tough but fair, and you could recoup your losses, and I find them to be basically the best squad-based tactical games out there.

>>153823368
Honestly when you break it down, there's not really that much bs the new xcoms. I'm not counting LOS stuff, barbecue that's just an ongoing struggle with the game breaking at times. That extra movement just means they can't shoot at you, even when they find you on their own turn. Yes it helps them, but it's also a handicap at the same time. Also XCOM bullshit always overwhelms alien bs, so meh. The only real advantage ayys get is no panic. It's fun making all the ayys start flipping their shit in x-com after you wipe out a dozen of them and a leader in a single turn.
I do agree though that losses are very harsh, and often you can't recover which is unfortunate. Yet on the other hand, from an objective view, soldier losses in x-com are almost trivial. You can play inefficiently and have soldier drop like flies and not really get punished for it. If your judging purely by the tactical combat, yeah I'd probably give it to x-com, but there is so many parts to a game. I just don't get attached to soldiers in the old games like I do the new, and that makes a big difference. I would love to bring that level of attachment to the older games, but the game-play really doesn't support it.
Pros and cons like usual.
>>
>>153824131
im sick of inverse difficulty curve.

Even though I don't like the LW team, they did really well with Long War, but with one final balance that was needed (max squad size to 8).

XCOM2 is so shallow. It's incredibly disappointing. BUt I guess we get a foundation for something that will be fixed by an overhaul in a year or 2.
>>
>>153824131
>Barbecue
You on your phone?
>>
>>153824131
If you buff the ayys and get more losses that result in gameover, just get that xp mod. I find that quite balanced.

Then again I had plenty of losses in X2 legend, up around until endgame where I was just leveling up my A-team.
>>
>>153824131

I stopped playing when I got to the codex that could duplicate itself, move and shoot in one turn (if I remember correctly). Utter bs when a game is such a tightrope walk to not get squadwiped above normal difficulty (and normal difficulty is not even a game, it's impossible to lose).
>>
>>153824387
No. Apparently I butchered "because" so badly that the first auto-correct option was barbecue. Don't know how I managed that.

>>153824339
>XCOM2 is so shallow.
About as shallow as XCOM1 on release. It's still not even a shallow game, just shallow by comparison when your throwing it against x-com and Long War.

>>153824461
Yeah, that is true that X2 let's you absorb more losses, which I think is steps in the right direction.
>>
>>153824545
They can move and shoot, but only after they use an aoe ablity that punishes you for having the squad to bunched up. And at that point, you have plenty of tools. Flashbangs and burning effects stop them from cloning. X2 enemies still can't touch EW sectopods,.
>>
>>153795391
Oh thank fucking god, the plain music replacer I was using had a lot of overlapping since you can't edit the .wem track lengths
>>
>>153824686

There's no way to know about the effects of flashbang and burning. And I can only bring a very limited number of them.
>>
>>153824873
>There's no way to know about the effects of flashbang and burning

This is what I hate about all the xcoms and even long war, they have that old school read a manual before playing, except there is no manual, so you just make mistakes and restart when they pile up so high and you get gameover because of an arbitrary timer that could have been extended if bradford saved me earlier.
>>
>>153824873
If you want to argue that not all the mechanics in X2 are clearly presented, then sure, but then all XCOM games are guilty of that, and x-com is the biggest offender by far.
>>
>>153825167

But in the original Xcom it is perfectly fine to be obscure about mechanics, because you actually can do a trial-and-error thing, if you try that in the new ones you have to restart (and thus losing hours of playtime) or start save-scumming like a madman (and thus cheapening the whole thing because you are now immortal).
>>

>>
>>153825254
>But in the original Xcom it is perfectly fine to be obscure about mechanics
There's nothing acceptable about how obscure the mechanics are, that's just the way the game is and people accept it. It would be a big improvement if the mechanics were easily accessible, hence why I always refer people to read up on UFOpaedia.
>if you try that in the new ones you have to restart (and thus losing hours of playtime) or start save-scumming like a madman (and thus cheapening the whole thing because you are now immortal).
I'll agree there can be some bigger consequences, but I think your over-blowing it. My first X2 campaign (ironman commander) ended when I beat the game, and I don't have a problem with people being expected to know the full ins and outs of a game to beat it on the hardest difficulty.

Anyway I'm going to bed for now.

That shit should be added to the MEGA.

>>153836645
Yeah I torrented the game shortly after it came out and just recently decided to play it.

The crash caused I assume by the Leader Pack hasn't happened despite having the Leader Pack for a few days now since I can only guess I've never had anyone below Sargent in my squad since every single one of my soldiers is Colonel or Magus now because I'm autistic, literally the second I started training up a new recruit because I figured maybe needing to get someone actually promoted to Sargent instead of just having someone above Sargent was preventing me from being able to see the Leader class in the Officer School my game started crashing as soon as I finish the mission.

I guess I could go load my game from before I have the mod, but that's like a week ago not that it's that important since I'm at the part when I can beat the game at will since I have 9 Magus maxed out and one still in training, it'd just set me back to having like 6 magus which is still more than enough.

The leader class from LW isn't actually a class, it works like psi in EW. You put a high-ranked soldier in the second GTS slot the mod unlocks.

I actually used it a grand total of once because fuck legend timers, but nowhere says you have to unlock it from the officer training school. Which doesn't even exist, actually.
From what I remember, you simply get an upgrade button on the GTS, which unlocks the second slot for leader training.

I was actually surprised to come here a couple weeks ago and discover pretty much no one plays vanilla. I actually like most of the the stuff I see in the screenshots here.

Alright, I'll bite. I'm coming into this debate on the literal opposite end of the spectrum. I made the 200+ modlist that's in the OP and I'm pushing on 200 mods running concurrently on my run right now. And that's after cleaning out 40 or so before starting it.
Unless I'm mistaken a majority of the argument you're making seems to be that by playing vanilla you are playing as the developers intended and thus very near the optimal balance, and that's a fair point. What shakes up that idea is that the devs aren't omnipotent, and they don't know the optimal balance for everybody in their playerbase.

With any game, there are always as many "optimal" difficulty settings as there are players, and the vanilla four are going to leave a lot of people feeling like they haven't been properly challenged - or on the other side of things, being challenged too harshly. That simple fact is impossible for developers to get around - but it's only a minor issue for a modular modding scene like XCOM2's where all players can tweak a campaign into their idea of the perfect difficulty.

Then there are the pure upgrades over vanilla, namely the cosmetics. Having new armors, weapons and accessories that you can swap in and out to gíve your campaign a whole new vibe and theme tacks on a level of replayability that could only be rivalled by paid content - but we get everything 100% for free. No matter how amazing a game is, its replayability is always going to have an upper cap. Mods remove that upper cap entirely, or at least push it forward by a couple of years.

In conclusion, mods allow more players to get the experience THEY are looking for, whilst simultaenously tacking on a metric fuckton of content the player can always come back and explore - way after they've played the vanilla experience to death.

>>153837128
Putting it in the MEGA now, thanks man!
>>
>>153851850
Yes, I mostly rely on the balance created by the devs, I think it's actually the right spot for me after beating it on C/I (after some 300+ tries and lots of rage inbetween).

But don't think I'm questioning the use of mods here, I've done it myself with other games.

I looked at your pic and I'm seeing some interesting stuff: ADVENT armour, face paints, military camouflage, stuff from XCOM 1, all that makes sense to me, I can try that.
>>
>>153851850
Is there a way to reduce the amount of scrolling done with the mouse wheel when you have a ton of options in the Props customization screen?

I end up skipping over a lot of stuff because I lack the patience to slowly move the bar between arrows.
>>
>>153853670
I just painstakingly pull the little scroll wheel, but yeah. That's a great idea for a mod actually it shouldn't be too hard to fix

>>153853160
That's great for you, but a lot of us were bitching in the weeks after launch that the L/I difficulty felt really underwhelming comparing it with EU's I/I setting. That was my main gripe with the game as a whole and mods empowered me to fix that shit. There are just some really dumb stuff in vanilla, like meme beacons and rulers getting executed.

The poles are supposed to be local broadcast points for the ADVENT network. Maybe the hack let's you use the towers to gather targetting data or direct fire easier with callouts, idk. I kind of assume that ADVENT troops and alien are hooked up and sending trading information back and forth on the network.

Magic.
You're actually downloading the standardized combat pattern for the soldiers in the AO, you're "forseeing" their attempts to avoid fire, therefore slightly increasing your chance to hit.

Really, they're mostly explainable with the specialist hacking in and using TECHNOLOGY to steal info and impair ADVENT or aid the squad.
Except maybe the random MC.
Though it can still be somewhat explained. Mech shit is just hacked, ADVENT grunts get their chips scrambled and confuse fellow soldiers for XCOM and vice versa, archons/codices/andros have their mechanical parts hacked as well since they're at least half machine. No idea for completely organic enemies unless they also have been brainchipped to keep them under stricter control.
Ask Jake.

OG rules apply. Every time a character's bravery is tested and they don't panic, they get a cumulative ~10% chance to gain +10 bravery at the mission's end. Tests are done below 50 morale.

To counter low bravery you can wear certain armors which lower the effects of stress or add bravery.

If you want to grind bravery up, you can put your guys in outfits that increase stress and wait a bunch of turns with them somewhere safe and preferably unarmed in case they berserk.

>>
>>153881842
Yeah there is a white bar right under the health bar. That's stun damage. Once it fills up to or past current health, people go unconscious. That's why people who get hit often go unconscious. They don't die, but the damage knocks their health down low and getting hit also generates some stun damage which then easily overwhelms their current health.
Zero health is always a dead soldier.

first aid red symbols means the unit has fatal wounds. The number tells you how much health they will bleed every-turn until you heal them.
The zzz stuff just means they are unconscious and not bleeding out.
>>
>>153883051
And so what does it take to prevent bleeding when they're down? Bandages only work on the upright.

>>153880975
So when someone is downed, it means that their stun level is higher than their current health. Healing wounds restores health and stops bleeding, but since you accumulate stun over time from having less than max health, this is unlikely to return them upright.

Grog barrels, small medpacks, and a variety of drugs and alcohol items have a stimulant that will significantly reduce stun damage. If you have the nurse armor, I recommend using one, as it's built in medical supplies are strong and have large reserves. Fine Rum is also very strong if you can produce it, but it gets used up pretty fast.

Does game difficult effect the campaign map portion of the game?

Does changing it to a different difficulty only apply to the battles? Or both campaign and battles or what?
>>
>>153884510

Only "game-ruining" glitch I've had so far was that it didn't actually let me use any of my allotted reinforcements on my first UFO defense mission, but I didn't end up needing a single reinforcement to win that mission anyways. I didn't even lose a single guy on that mission, and I am also playing with every mod you're using, with exception to Advent Officers Call Reinforcements. Even if I had lost that mission because of the glitch (and I have before,) the game still would've given me the prompt to retry that mission even on Ironman mode, because it's a critical mission and you can't afford to lose it or your campaign is immediately over.

Seriously consider giving it a try sometime! If nothing else, at least play on Legendary, otherwise the game will cheat in your favor all the time and it won't be any fun.

So, for XCOM: EW, are there any mods that disable or severely nerf global panic without changing to much of the rest of the game? Call me a scrub but I don't like how the game rushes me to get to the end, I'd kind of like to just play the game.

Also, is XCOM 2 like that as well? Constantly hounding you to progress and not letting you just play?
>>
>>153905568

Not exactly, in Xcom2 the aliens have a doomsday clock and certain missions remove the aliens's progress, most story objectives also remove their progress and you can sometimes counter how fast they progress.

But even if they reach the end of the doomsday clock you are still given a chance to make them dial it back and you can just keep doing that as long as you want.
>>
>>153905568
Unknown on the first front, I don't really play either game with mods.
XCOM 2 has its own system in place which makes you have to go at a certain pace, the Avatar Project. You can reverse its project to a degree, but you can never stop it. It's not quite as overbearing as the panic system, but it still can put you in a pinch if you don't plan ahead.
>>
>>153905568
XCOM EW doesn't force you to end the game at all. Just throw a satellite over every country and don't lose missions. Done, the campaign theoretically goes on forever.
For X2 you can' completely stop progress, though naturally you could keep the game going long past when you could have already won. There are mods that change how the "Doom" ticker works, and can disable it if you want to.
>>
>>153905568
Look into editing the ini, you can make it so that the doom counter never advances IIRC, or at the very least edit the panic of every country to be low

I uh

I just lost my entire character pool.

Veterans of several campaigns, one dude who somehow managed to worm his way into the barracks every campaign since day one, lucky go-to support lady who made clutch crits and saved the squad numerous times, one sniper that, I shit you not, only missed ONE shot in all the campaigns he fought in...

All gone, man.

What do I do now?

>sectoids in X2 are stronger, the game just gimps them by making them appear alone early

They are literally the easiest piece of shit to kill in the end game with 9387468976 ayys activated.

Jake learned nothing from Long War.

NOTHING.
>>
>>153921719
They would be huge threats if they actually consistently used their best ability, mindspin - but not only do they never use it, will progression is so off the rails that no soldier will ever fall for it. They are so damn bad as is
>>
>>153921719
Being easy to kill doesn't correlate with being stronger or weaker.
If you leave a pack of sectoids alive they can actually be problematic if they all succeed their mindspins.
Especially if they MC someone and it's the designated flasher.

Also
>in the end game
No shit?
They're the first alien to appear, of course they'll be easy to kill.
The easiest prize actually goes to codices if you have BSOD rounds.

It's already been debated to death, sectoids are retarded because usually there's a corpse lying around and they need to resurrect that first.
Which actually seems to be a problem for casuals, given the amount of tears at launch.

For the next game, Jake really ought to do away with the whole pod activation mechanic. Replace it with damn time units something.
Pod activation is literally everthing wrong with the nuCOMs. It doesnt make any god-damn sense realistically(inb4 "realism lmao" argument), it is not a fun mechanic and it just forces alpha striking after twenty turns of tedious tile-by-tile sneaking for every pod(which isnt even possible with timed missions, which is what makes ADVENT FUCKING TRAINS such a fun experience.)

i would like it if after some of its aliens are killed and only a few are left
make them able to radio for help and attract a nearby pod to their position
if the balance of pods and aliens on missions are good
then the player wouldn't be overwhelmed by all the aliens of the mission at once, but at the same time that would allow a constant flow of enemies once you start combat
>>
>>153965025
>Start combat
>Enemies can hear combat and will start patrolling at the sound at walking speed until they get los on one of your dudes
>They do the usual pod activation
>Give players suppressors and Rangers abilities to make less noise
>Make some noise-based items like a distress beacon that draws enemies towards it because it sounds like fighting
>In exchange for enemies actively seeking out combat give players more ways to back out of a fight, like letting non-rangers use Conceal once they've gotten far enough away from enemies/after 2 turns out of enemy sight or something
>Alerted enemies will actively patrol where they saw your squad last and be on their guard so they'd have a significantly larger detection radius

My reasoning is that the Mega is outdated and I won't be able to update it for another week or so, and that the Steam-list is not only more up to date but also useful to more people. Besides, the minority of people who do need the Mega know it exists and can find it at the pastebins easily.

>Always take the high ground whenever you can, especially early.

>Learn how to use your sniper and your shinobi effectively in conjunction with each other, especially on untimed missions such as ADVENT Blacksite.

>Get your SPARK as soon as you can handle Julian, but don't bother with the Alien Rulers until you can handle them.

>Save your flashbang for whenever you have to take on more than one group, since it has the biggest radius of all grenades.

>Always put your frost grenade in your grenadier's utility slot. You need the extra radius in order to make it useable, but it will always guarantee you a dead pod if you use it on the first group you run into, by initiating with it while your team is still concealment.

>Always try to get three scientists early and rush magnetic weapons as soon as you get your third. This will make the game substantially easier.

>If you're playing with the Grimy's Loot Box mod, getting a GOOD grenade launcher should always be your top priority when you roll the option on a loot box. Ideally, you want one with a sidearm holster attachment, so that you can stick it on a grenadier with nat. 13-14 movement; any quality is fine.

>Frags are extremely important throughout a majority of the game. Don't EVER skimp out on frags (or frag-alternatives; meaning: grenades which can destroy cover & shred armor, such as plasma grenades, etc...) even when bullets, more appealing grenades, mimic beacons and the like become enticing options.

>Always spend a lot of time planning. Make sure you take everything you need, and that you have a take-down strategy for anything you could possibly run into. You are going to get Berserkers way earlier than you think.

>Unlike in LW, the black market is your friend, but make sure to save plenty of intel for communications. You are going to need them, and the supplies for multiple radio relays, way earlier than you think depending on where your starting location is.

My personal mod list has like 120 mods by itself all from steam. You're doing something wrong.

Long War will fix it after expansion.
>>
>>153981985
It didn't change anything X1, I don't know why you think a new Long War would. Unless you mean the emphasis on Alpha strikes, but people have already found ways to fix that in their own modded campaigns for X2.

arent they just going to release their pending mods and then go on to develop their own game??
>>
>>153983890
People are guessing they are going to release a strategic overall to pair with their perk and alien pack. I'm not so certain, but I guess it's a possibility.
>>
>>153983890
Their game might be close to release byt he time XCOM expansion and patching is done.

I wouldn't be surprised if they launch a Long War 2, so they can use the extra exposure for their game.
>>
>>153984432
doubt it
i am guessing that around 6 or 7 more months we will get the expansion
(thats around the same time it took for EW to come out after EU)
and their game its in pre-kickstarter development

Hey XCOM general, rookie XCOMer here, I literally just finished my first playthrough of base game XCOM EU on Xbox 360, I got it free with games with gold and I guess they removed all of the DLC and everything except EW which I heard already has EU as part of it. and holy shit what a magical experience.

Any suggestions on where I go from here? Do I buy XCOM EW for PC or do I jump right into XCOM 2 I saw that's already out, but the story and lore and shit seems really interesting. Modding seems to be pretty great too, but I like playing vanilla games before I start modding. I also want to become part of the multiplayer experience.

Please help!
>>
>>153989362
play EW, Play Long War, Play XCOM2. thats about 300 hours. See you in 6 months when the expansion comes out for XCOM2. :)
>>
>>153989362
Welcome to the party friend do what >>153989554 said its great
>>
>>153989362
Same opinion as the anon above.
Probably get EW first since when its on sale you can get it for 10-15$, plus you can try out Long War, and then pick up X2.

Be warned that the multiplayer is probably really inactive, its just not what people really play xcom for, and it is not a focus for the developers either.
>>
>>153989554
>>153989686

Thanks! Two questions though, are all of those WW2 styled pics above from mods, or are they part of the new story?

Second question, should I get it for PC or Xbox? I know modding will be great, but if I just plan to play the base game until XCOM 2, I probably won't mod until then and I can just buy it for the computer at that time.

Good to know about the online community though. The base game was amazing and I can see how online would be great, but as long as the good stuff gets better I'm fine.

Enjoy your stay.

Also, I recommend Long War if you've completed at least an ironman/classic playthrough. And plenty of time, as a Youtuber-Twitch streamer named Beaglerush had a campaign that had a time ratio of 2:1. Meaning that his campaign lasted two ingame years while in real life it took an entire year.

Also, ayy lmao score of 948 netting me the location of an ayy base.
>>
>>153990126
The WWII pics are just cosmetic mods.

Depends how much time you want to put into X1. Long War is a very overhaul for people who had fun with X1 but want a longer campaign with more depth.
>>
>>153990174
>>153990295

Hmmm okay, I got it for free on Xbox and I think the Long War is a mod only for PC. Should I make the jump and buy EW on PC? I will miss sitting on my couch, also my rig is a bit of a toaster. what would be best?
>>
>>153991181
You're gonna have to make that decision yourself. X1 isn't too demanding, I play it on my pretty old work laptop. It also has controller support if you like playing it that way.
>>
>>153990126
Get XCOM complete pack on PC when its on sale for about 10-15 dollars, it is very worth it just for Long War for a heavily modded EW experience.. Until then if you wana play EW on xbox go right ahead.

I would recommend playing XCOM2 with the least amount of mods as possible on your first time. Preferably just a mod like the camera mod and that's about it. For stability sake.
>>
>>153991443

Hmm would you say getting EW for PC and then XCOM 2 for Xbox would be a shitty idea? I just like when it shows the raider with my crew I feel like I'm flying with them on my big TV. Are the controls on the PC much easier?
>>
>>153991495

When is it going on sale?
>>
>>153991598
Controls on pc are much eaier imo, but more importantly the modding content on X2 is pretty huge, you'll be missing out.
But you can't really play X2 on a toaster, especially if you want to use alot of mods.
>>
>>153991693
Every 3 to 6 months it's up for sale.
>>
You guys play any strategy management style games between XCOM?

I have a craving to play something with some depth.

Tried Rimworld but it's pissing me off terribly. The colonists are such dumbasses who cry about everything. Yet it feels as addictive as X(-)COM does, without the emotional payoff. I think I need to stop playing and find something else.

Anyone remember this woman from Beaglerush's chat? I guess she bought a name in game.

>>153992283
not quite what you may be looking for but stellaris is fun and not very hard to get into

Yeah man I refuse to ever support or even play early access anymore. I'll give it a go when they release it.

>>153992952
I might try that out actually. It's even sci fi, so have an upvote :)

>>
>>154005335
I'm not anti-timer, but a lot of the tactical layer is changed entirely by the need for battles to be doable within the limit. It just adds stress instead of tactical considerations.

...I guess I am anti-timer, now that I write it out. Not for the idea, but for how it's presented. Guerilla War has a better notion of how it should work, I think.

Honestly though I think the major problem is the stategic layer.
>>
>>154005494
Timer is fun. Not having a timer means not having to take any risks. Maybe the antifun thing is my own fear of losing soldiers and missions!

Also vipers, fuck vipers with their poison spit and dodge and free tongue action.
