Sometimes it just doesn't proc. I've had it happen before.
One thing to note is that it will not proc if the moving unit is on a different elevation. Also, they have to step into the zone and then move again.
But it still does not work at all sometimes for seemingly no reason.

Does anyone feel like the maps are EW's biggest strength and weakness at the same time?

Compared to XCOM2's maps where you can pretty much bring one squad comp to cover all your bases, EW's maps are all drastically different and will fuck you up if you bought the wrong team comp, thank god for the LW's albeit vague map description but it still helps

I just got back to the game from a long hiatus to try out all the new stuff. Back when I last played, I had a homemade mod that increased the number of enemies in a pod, and the number of pods on missions. That mod is broken now, apparently, and I'm trying to make sense of the changes. What the fuck is an "encounter bucket" and why did they add it?

This is about the legal battle between the author of the witcher series Andrzej Sapkowski and the author Michael Moorcock, and not the Witcher video games. The Witcher game series is just a side issue, connected, but not the real problem.

Yeah they changed kill zone so it does not activate from concealment. RIP kill zone imo, that was it's greatest strength. You can still get use out of it, but it's still overwatch and thus unreliable imo. Starting an ambush with it was super strong and covered for it's weakness.

The month of July saw 9 deployments over a 6 day period. XCOM managed to field 8 operatives for all missions but the injuries and fatigue wounds were racking up toward the end. Should I buy the alloy SHIV? Or just take 2-3 regular SHIVs and treat 'em as expendables? This made me think. Disregarding the fact that it would probably be an insane amount of work, wouldn't it indeed be possible to implement a third faction?
I'm far from knowing the logic behind it, but ruler reaction basically trigger after every soldier movement that isn't a free action.
By giving reactions to third party allies and modifying it to trigger after the last player/alien action, it would basically create a third phase in the turn.
Having them join you after the mission if they survive doesn't seem to be too complicated either, since there's already a script in place to have sci/engis join you once they rescue you.
Would it even be possible to do all this or I'm just dreaming?

Someone always has a mod that includes exalt as another faction and you can have a three way fight. Also the three phase turn already exists in the vanilla game. Remember that in retaliation missions, the turn order is you, the ayy, and then cives. They have their own separate turn to themselves that follows the same rules as other units.

Why? It hardly actually matters if it goes through. You will lose some resources, but if you follow up the next month, the ayys should launch more missions and ufos. You might end up with a bit less resources, but theirs no risk to your roster being impacted by early losses of higher ranked soldiers. It's in no way required at all. In fact, I'd wager that on average, not going on the mission would lead to a larger percentage of successful campaign comparatively.

It happens in the Stardust crusaders adventure, at least a few times. I think in the episodes somewhere around 10-20. But I've been binge watching them, so I can't recall clearly. I'm certain its the same sounds they use in XCOM. Not always the full sound or exactly the same, but even if they cut off or are distorted my brain reacts every-time. I know I heard the run n' gun activation sound 100%.

I downloaded the mod that replaces mission timers with infinite enemy reinforcements, reinforcements acting on landing and the All Pods Activated mod, and things have gotten a lot tougher. If you don't have them yet, give them a shot.

I also downloaded the "can only keep corpses you carry out" mod, but I think that might be going a bit too far. Not having stacks of ADVENT corpses to sell off hurts my economy more than I realized.

Like the other person said, lot's of High explosive bricks are how you take care of cyberdiscs. If you aren't already, make sure you aren't leaving the skyranger on the first turn. All aliens have full TUs the first turn meaning the will reaction fire you. But the next turn they will spend at least half if not more of their TUs moving around. Instead smoke the skyranger ramp and wait a turn. Also, take advantage of smoke grenades and terrain to break los as much as possible. In a good operation for me, I never see a single alien on their turn, and that's what you want to aim for. Abuse squad based los as much as possible. Scout ahead with one person, but have everyone else doing the shooting and throwing stuff so that the scout doesn't get reaction fired if possible.

I lost 30kgs with zero exercise. And seen others in my family follow the same diet. Basically no sugar, no wheat products, no vegetables oils, and no starches. Basically rice, meat and veges. Same calorie intake but you lose weight.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Long War?
EW has simpler, but much better mechanics.
In EW you want to have as many item slots as possible, where in LW they are meaningless because most of the time you won't use them up anyway, and if you do then they will cripple you.
You have a bigger squad (8 with both squad upgrades, up to 12 on the very important missions), but there are 16 fucking classes, 8 alone without counting MECs.
Fatigue is a very lazy way of making you need more soldiers. When I complete a mission flawlessly, killing every ayy without giving it a chance to hit me then I should be rewarded, not having to wait 5 days before using them again.
It all seems much laggier as well, I know that it adds a lot of content, but EW ran perfectly at no less than 60 FPS while LW keeps stuttering. At this point I'm just nitpicking though.

100% unique alien species (not upgraded/elite variants), X1 has 12 aliens. X1 EW has 14. With straight upgrades/elite variants, X1 has 15 and EW has 17.

For EW if you include Exalt there are 18 unique enemies. Including elite variants you have 25 enemies.

If you don't include ADVENT for X2, there are 12 unique aliens. If you include ADVENT there are 18 unique enemies. If you include elite variants then there are 28 enemies.
However many of these are just health upgrades and don't have any new abilities or equipment (Like a floater gets an alien grenade when upgraded to heavy floater). So if instead we only count elite variants that change in a more significant manner, then it's 19 (I only consider the upgraded MEC a significant enough change, which even then is only an AI behavioral change).
If you throw in DLC the number grows, but then those enemies only appear on specific missions, or maybe once or twice your entire campaign.

Download maxsquadsize fix from the nexus.
I don't know if they fixed it or not, but early versions fucked up with the heavy weapon slot and you had to pixel hunt or change it from the loadout screen.
You can also run the toolbox and have a cleaner UI pre-mission launch.

The time is right, when this game came out, I did legendary mostly-vanilla then just dropped it, I bailed out.

The planets have aligned, the good quality armor and weapon mods have come out, the LW perk and class overhauls are here, all the DLC is out and finally, after all this time, Xcom 2's shit combat music has finally been replaced.

It is only now that I can truly experience the ideal XCOM experience, now can I observe true magnificence.

I even tried command and conquer red alert 3, because why not. I got to the second level in the campaign and they forced me to work with an AI commander in order to beat the level. The AI had control of the of like half the army and the hero unit and then proceeded to screw everything up. I didn't even bother exploring the game more after that.

If you haven't given C&C3 a try, I'd recommended giving it a go. Kane's Wrath is even better.
They're not as classic as RA/RA2 or Dawn/Sun, but they have solid gameplay.

I've been working on a hat for the rage suit, it's been a challenge trying to get the textures to match the rage suit, the gold metal parts and the skin in particular.

The physics on the ponytail thing was another challenge, at first i couldn't even figure out how they were done, but by looking at the advent cape for a couple of hours i managed to figure it out.

The only problem with the physics that i wasn't able to fix is that when the soldier is perfectly still they behave a bit jittery, but by chance i noticed that a soldier in the menu screen with a ponytail was also jittery when he stood still, so i figure it might just be a thing. The jitteryness isn't noticeable when the soldier is moving his head anyway and even when he is still it isn't that noticeable so whatever.

There's still a couple of things i want to change work with here and there, and i plan to make some variants before i release it.

Right now the helmet is in 3 pieces, the helmet with the neckguard, just the neckguard and the ponytail. That way you can stick the ponytail on some other helmets if you feel like it, and i figure the neckguard might let you use other helmets that don't cover the open neck the rage suit leaves.

As for the variants i'm going to make is one that is more faceless and one that doesn't have the berserker horn things on the side, and then an alternate version of those that is customizable normally so you can use it with other armor pieces if you want.

I've only beaten vanilla on normal. I played LW a bit and changed a lot. The one thing I am tempted to change is the removal of -1 movement to some of the smaller items since it feels like it's blatantly unfair at times.

Took a quick glance. A health point knocked for alot of aliens, arc thrower has vanilla stun strength, Interceptor repair time is set to 240 (vs. 600).
Looking at how the standard difficulties differ, I'm gonna guess you also get more money from countries without sats, and that countries take more panic to leave the council. Probably a slows alien research as well.

Good heavens, this EU music replacer. Not only is EU's music just BETTER, but hearing it in-game actually gives me a feeling of connection between the games that was sort of lacking before.

Everyone complains about this and I can't stop myself ending my play on a terror mission in Long War/EW or a retaliation mission in XCOM2.

I don't know why they brought them back in XCOM2, it's just a kick in the nuts for no reason.

The issue is that it really feels like luck how the terror mission goes. Keeping all your guys alive and unwounded and wiping out all the ayys still is totally in player control, but the way cives work on the missions, it just feels like your relying on rng to reduces casualties. At least that's how I feel imo.

In the og--xcom the missions are still brutal, but its different. Aliens who see you will actual switch from killing civs to fight you. If you push agressively you can actually wipe out the ayys which will stop them from killing civs. The fact that they actually have to aim and shoot civs and have to spend their time doing means that civ casualties actually can be reduced by player skill and having better soldiers and equipment.

I got considerably less stuttering and now have zero frame-drops below 50 after capping my FPS at sixty in a third-party program. I have no idea why but I tested it a couple of times and it's definitely the reason. I suspect it has to do with X2 getting GPUs in general hot as shit, and the frame-lock keeping it under low enough stress that thermal throttling never kicks in.

On a different note, I've been trying to figure out who I like as officers. Before command was added, the general consensus was that gunner's were the best overall soldiers for officers.
With command, who have you guys been using as officers? I've been using a couple different classes this run (gunner, medic, infantry) but my favorite so far is smoke engineers. With the smoke grenade perk, throwing smoke is a free action. They generally stay near your squad for smoke support and to potentially take advantage of their own smoke. And then of course they can smoke and hunker, smoke and smoke, smoke and overwatch or take a shot, or smoke and command.

No, my point is they were never supposed to be smart

Every single X2 enemy is lobotomized when you think about. They have no awareness of the objective, and unlike X1, they have zero survival instincts.
If not overwatched, enemies will almost always blue move no matter what. They will move straight from their full cover into half cover just too move. Pectoids have a 66% chance to raise a zombie instead of mind-spinning which the clearly the stronger ability. They can't even shoot if all their abilities are down. Vipers could rain hell if all they did was sit in heavy cover, tongue pull (if they have allies) and then not bind, or fail the tongue pull and just poison everyone.
Think about it, if the enemy AI wasn't dumb, they would just take full cover positions and dig in. There special abilites are very strong adn they could wreck you, but their AI literally stops them from making tactically sound decisions. Surviving longer and some overwatch would make the current timers they have for missions nearly impossible. It's only their suicidal tendencies that tend to make every firefight so short, whether they go well or not.
This is just my conjuncture, but it makes sense to me when I look at the details.

Meant to say they can only shoot if all their abilites are down. Fortunately the kinda fixed that by letting them shoot if they have a shot on an exposed enemy. Before that I used to just charge Pectoids and ignore cover because I knew until they used both abilities they were helpless to defend themselves.

Anyway tl;dr the most enemies in X2 are weak because of AI, not stats or abilities.

I think timers and clever enemies could work just fine to be honest. I think the core idea of timers is good, and can make for some interesting gameplay, but I think in vanilla they are just too oppressive.
They only leave room for extremely aggressive play. I think timers could be kept, but just extended significantly. The point of them would be to keep the player aware they need to advance, but unless they were playing the tactical fights poorly or just couldn't stop over-watching continuously they would be punished. The reinforcement mechanic of Guerilla war also works fine, though differently. Optimally you would almost never hit the timers unless you really screwed up. This would also put the ball back in the court the players troops vs. the enemy AI deciding who goes home safe and sound or who gets wounded or killed.

XCOM is at its strongest when the player has agency to forge their own success and failures. Hence also why terror missions in the new XCOM don't feel very good, or why the air game in X1 felt so lacking, same for X2 strategy game.

What is there to explain? Everyone is going to be melted down eventually, and the population needs to be kept under control. Letting humans breed freely would be a huge waste of resources since the ethereal's are going to die from space cancer long before they grow up and are useful for anything. So there is no advantage to growing new humans. Initially it wasn't too restricted while ADVENT established full control, but once the ethereals had their timeline on when they needed a cure, they started clamping down hard and heavily enforcing population control policies.
The public accepts it for the most part due to the usual brainwashing, propaganda, and even measures taken to curb or eliminate human sexual desire through drugs introduced to all human food served in ADVENT cities (ADVENT Burger's are damn tasty, but you'd be better off staying away from them). Also the public is told that ADVENT is making sure to maintain a near perfect birth rate that barely edges out the death rate, which they accept unquestioningly as there is actual no way for anyone keep track of a single person who disappears to get melted down, let alone the entire human population in ADVENT controlled cities and areas.

For the most part only humans very far up in the ADVENT administration still have this privilege, the exception being a man and women who have very high psionic potential. This is of course explained as the individuals having exceptional genes that will benefit humanity as a whole to be passed down (The usual eugenics stuff). The couple are allowed to have a single child. What they don't know is that the aliens take advantage of their psionicaly receptive material too grow thousands of human and hybrid clones at accelerated growth rates. These are used to continue ADVENT research or bolster their supply of ADVENT troops.

There needs to be an "approval" stat which influences how well you cooperate with the resistance. Killing civvies penalizes it, doing well on retals increases it. Completing guerilla objectives but evacing without killing all the enemies gives you the mission reward but no "approval".

Coming off of the original trilogy and the UFO series, EU felt awful to play through and the ending shits the bed but the plot is interesting though not great, not that the story's the main point of X-Com. Enemy Within made it actually enjoyable to some degree and made the DLC not fucking garbage, though I liked the idea of Operation Slingshot it was horrid in its balance.

The XCOM/xcg community is kinda divided right now. We have people playing X1 EW, X2 vanilla, X2 modded campaigns (which are all different from each other), some people still playing classic x-com and pirateZ. Back when X2 just released people where all playing the same thing, same for when LW was really popular.

Well he's playing more LW. He doesn't like designing his own X2 campaign, because he always feels like if it's too hard or easy, it's the way he set things up, not player skill.
Also the modded X2 campaign he had in progress corrupted and died.

Allright. If you enjoyed xcom1 and then X2 should be worth it. There are three dlc out currently, more content to come later, and there's ton of modding content.

The multplayer in X2 is relatively tacked on, same as the X1 multiplayer. I think I played one match.

I gotta agree that this build was nice and multi-purpose but I have to say that the better results are with a sniper as the base for the MEC.

The extra aim makes the difference and rarely you ever need to tank for the team because there are no ayys left.
