When I was using the hunting horn with item duplication bug, most of the level 10 skills were Action Boost and lot of Highlander and Gunner skills.
And when I was playing the game the right way, I also had a high rate of drop for these two classes. So you'll get them eventually

They're an average sort of class, with some good debuffs and support options. Eagle Eye and Hanging are nice, Swashbuckling takes a lot of point investment but ultimately lets you build up a metric shit ton of limit with their other skills. Pincushion scales with both Str and Agi, so it's a very powerful attack lategame, but you don't get a lot of attack passives to supplement it.
The chases are really par for course, which would be fine but Shoguns exist and phbbbbbbbbbffffffff
If you're going with support skills, sub into a Princess or Wildling. If you're going for Limit Spamming, Zodiac to strengthen Hellfire. If you're already in postgame book farming phase, Gladiator.

In EO1 (DS), I found that even at rank10 base elemental spells are weak. A rank10 Fire spell is weaker than a rank5 Inferno against a single target. It sucks because the big AoE moves like Inferno cost more than three-times the amount of mana that the single-target Fire spell costs and Fire's damage against that single target is inferior. If you want to spam Inferno, the costs are ridiculous. Compare that shit to Landshark's SlashAll. Rank10 SlashAll only costs 8 mana and does more fucking damage than Inferno does.
The question. Did they ever balance this out in EO2 or are Inferno / Cocytus / Thor still his best spells for max damage?

EO2 splits them up into two different skills. You have Inferno, which is weaker than Fire but does aoe damage, and Flame, which is multitudes stronger but only affects a single target. The latter is a lot cheaper TP-wise but still more costly than Tier 1.
Either way, Alchemists still get dunked on postgame with mediocre scaling.

What is your personal favorite game in this series? Whenever I see the question "how do I get into EO?" it's always the same answers.

Looking back, I don't think I've ever seen much discussion on favorites, it's always just shitting on the entries people don't like. I've always found EO slightly weird in that it doesn't have a clear fan favorite, while most other franchises do.Personally, I prefer 2U.

5 has a bit of a problem in such a way that all classes do pretty small damage numbers, which makes them a lot less fun to play. It also makes the two classes with big damage numbers (Cestus and Masurao) feel almost mandatory.
Game also still suffers from almost requiring a defensive class, which means you'll probably take a Dragoon. A shaman may be able to fill the role, but not as well or as reliably. Warlock also has an anti-element skill, but no anti-physical skill.
Herbalist is the only healer worth a shit, so you'll want one of them too. Necro can potentially work as a (very limited) healer, but suffers from having to rely on ghosts to use skills, making it less reliable.
There are no classes built around ranged physical damage, except for Hound which uses a tertiary slot, and also uses a huge chunk of their own TP to summon a very fragile pet; then have their other skills use a lot of TP. Gunner Dragoon is severely underwhelming, with low damage and very few options in battle.
So, if you're not building a chase team, or sanzu team you'll be running:
Cestus, Masurao, Dragoon, Herbalist, (Something else)

I've had the Etrian Odyssey series on my backlog for a few years now. A few months ago I tried the first one. I made a somewhat balanced party with a tank, a healer, two support and two DPS. I went through the first floor slowly but surely. Grinded until I had a few levels and everyone had the best weapons and armor I could get from that level. Went to the second level and had my tank get 2 shot by the first trash mob I encountered before my healer could react. Reloaded and the same thing happen with a different encounter. I dismissed the game as a grinding simulator.
Now my question is this: are the other games in the series as stupid as what I saw from the first one?Please note that I don't consider this type of gameplay to be difficult. Grinding trivial enemies for hours to beat enemies that you'll have to grind on for hours to beat the next level of enemies isn't difficult, it's just shitty gameplay.

The only skills I had on my tank were the ones that increased defense and I had a level or two in the taunt skill. Tank also had some sort of crafted armor that was better than the basic store one. I also had a bard using some sort of armor/def song. And I still got two shot. By two different enemies. After breezing through the first floor.
I've been playing different flavors of RPGs for over 25 years, I have a pretty damn good grasp on what needs to be done in these types of games. Beef up the tank, keep the healer(s) safe, buff up, use CC and deal damage. Upgrade your gear, fully explore, prepare, advance. So when my tank, using the best gear I can find, who only use skills that increase his defense and taunt enemies, who is buffed with a defensive buff, gets 2 shot by a random trash mob before my cleric can land a heal on the tank, I assume that I'm either missing something crucial or that I'm supposed to grind. But like I said, this isn't my first rodeo, which leads me to believe that the problem lies with with the game's systems and not whatever I was doing. Hence my question: are the following games in the series this stupid?

Artery's good for one particular early boss, but aside from that it doesn't do all that much. Barrier is a must have skill come later stratums, you only need one point in Vampire for it to be doing good worksince Ailing Slash shits damage out the ass.
No real reason to retire, but if it really comes to that just switch on picnic and autogrind back up in whatever stratum you're on. No one's going to notice.

less emphasis on simple monster gimmicks than shiren, many monster spam AOE skills instead
fun weapon melding replaced with loot grinding for the forge. no point to even using the shop since it's not like the special stuff is that much better than what you'll pick up off the floor.
you don't need to be resourceful with items at all, skills cover everything.

That's a tough question as it's all in the quirks of the game design. Make no mistake, EMD is alright game. The town is cozy af. If you can handle its quirks, it is interesting and ambitious. And while it isn't great, and maybe not even good, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
The balancing in Shiren is INCREDIBLY tight. There's a reason it's the best. EMD... it's too broad. A dozen classes each with skill trees out the wazoo. The party/AI mechanic completely breaks Shiren's balance because the AI does not play footsies. So you have all this Shiren-style ability items lying around to slow monsters or to stun them or to displace them, but they're ALL pointless if not playing solo because the AI won't attack-move-attack-move against a slowed enemy, the AI won't prioritize non-stunned enemies, it won't move to a hallway so you can get a swarm one at a time... The spacing game is completely gone yet all the toys are still there.
Enemies aren't clever at all, especially at the post-game where entire rooms are full of room-wide attack monsters that literally resist everything. You do more damage to the post-game final boss than you do to 90% of the enemies in the last dungeon.
Managing the AI is a game of itself. You have to enable and disable their skills every so often to ensure they don't spam spells against mooks.
Reset dungeons are overlong snoozefests that, if you play solo or two man rather than a four-man team become incredibly easy and tedious.

Are you talking EO2U? Survivalist is good for ailments and the accuracy debuff.
His only real damage is Hazy Arrow, which only triggers off a dodge, which doesn't happen as often as him getting one-shot.
When I played story his main trick was accuracy debuffs, then blind so War Mage Chloe could open up a can of ailment slash.
Beyond that he's fast enough to chuck healing items if it ever comes to THAT.
