Having played VFD first, then the original, it doesn't seem any worse than where Untold went. There's callbacks everywhere and they did try to be consistent with Nyala and Haze. Time travel plot was bound to retcon some stuff and they've clearly wanted to focus on Tokyo since 2020.

I really like the world in the original though. So much better than VFD's maps. Shame that kind of overworld will likely never come back.

Using a Union skill requires the initiator (and only the initiator) to have a 100% gauge and sets their gauge and that of any other participants to 0%.

The basic Union skills are

I just recently beat Etrian Odyssey 1 on the DS yesterday and I'm now slowly exploring the post-game 6th sanctum.

I have a question about a map mechanic in the game (EO1 DS, can't speak for any of the other games). Alright, the first time you enter a floor and start exploring, all FOEs are invisible to you unless you have direct line of sight with them. However, once you've mapped out a floor, all future times that you explore that floor all FOEs will be revealed to you on your map.

I feel certain that the trigger for the "reveal of all FOEs" has to do with having accurately mapped out over 90% of the floor. But I don't know if there are triggers involved with having to physically walk on tiles or having to see the FOE at least. Let's say I started the game over from scratch and had the layouts of the floors committed to memory and could somehow draw up entire maps without taking a single step through a floor, would that reveal all the FOEs?

How does that work exactly? Deconstructing video game programming is a hobby of mine and I'm curious exactly what makes FOEs permanently show up on a map.

Also, Sniper's luck is kind of lame. Is your Arcanist a main or sub? Arcanist main shouldn't have TOO much trouble landing, but if it's a Medic/Arcanist for example, it'll never hit anything.

I think you're right about this and I can't get over the fact in my head that this is needlessly complicated. That there were are triggers on each tile that are being recorded telling the game that you have walked on a particular tile. That in itself doesn't sound bad, but that there are instances where players don't want to walk on every tile. Sometimes you'll walk into the middle of a big empty room and just want to draw in the "walkable" tiles without actually setting foot on them and this can screw with aspects of accurately revealing FOEs on your map.

That said, it really does have to be done that way. Otherwise players could just fill in the map randomly and make FOEs appear like a game of Battleship that you can't lose.

Would get shut down by priority speed nuking due to having abysmal defenses. WM would fare better since the skill needs to activate BEFORE the defense drop occurs, but pinpoint nuking could still fuck up a Gladiator/Shogun easily enough.

Annoying as fuck, but likely ineffective, especially if something like Barrier winds up available. Random Multi-hit moves can be lured to tanks and counterbots with any of the usual aggro redirection moves.

Usually instant kills are soft banned for this sort of thing unless they have some sort of hefty requirement like putting the foe to sleep for Scythe of Death. One shots by damage should only occur from exploiting weaknesses or using shit like Warrior Might or Berserker Vow that drops your Defense/HP to dangerous levels. I'd be more worried about stun locks and mass meat shield summoning that makes battles take an eternity.

Oh wait, you're right. I'm looking at the original typeface right now, and the Etrian version looks like a compressed variant, which doesn't actually exist. But I don't think it's hinting, like the other suggested. It looks like the characters are being constrained to the max width of the Japanese font for whatever reason, which is why any thin characters like "i"s seem okay, but the wide ones really suffer.

Like I mentioned above, with instant kills in EO there are accessories to make them(and other specific ailments/binds likely to be used) unreliable as an option. At some point everyone might end up wearing them to shut down that option for safety, a handful of people won't for increased damage or protection against certain things. If you can notice that, THEN hit them with the Zombie Powder for making it too obvious they weren't negating death effects, you can wind up with a nice lead and punish them for not following the meta against characters with potential instant kills. But that'll only work for one round, and then that option is gone, hence its limited usefulness. That's why you wouldn't use them, and why others would question you for doing so. Soft bans aren't always for doing broken shit, and sometimes you might even be praised for pulling off a normally questionable tactic in the right circumstances(especially if it's something that looks cool or does something cool).

Actually, here's a better comparison. In the original font, the "a" is only half as wide as the entire "m" character, while in the game's version, it shoots past even the "m"s middle stem.

It's weird; I'm looking at the article where Atlus reveals the font for IV, and the type has good proportions in the screenshots. Either those were mock-ups, or something screwed up for U2.

Should I kill a vampire bat, return to town to heal, kill the other, heal again, then fight the boss? Or is that really cheesy/unnecessary? I have to return to town because my party lacks damage at the moment because no ecstasy, so I need to pop all force/breaks to burst those FOEs down in a few turns.

If you're talking about the ones in the boss' lair, you should really be able to kill them quickly before fighting the boss if you're ready for it. They're weak to stab attacks and you need to use one for the conditional, though chances are you don't have a Gunner or Highlander if damage output is a problem.

so how am i meant to use nightseeker exactly, i have mine subbed arcanist with throws and ailment stuff maxed, yet it only works on bosses and foes maybe 10% of the time, and it does no damage without ailments.

nah it turns out I just underestimated my damage, once I trapped the boss a few times I was able to kill the bats easily enough.

I knocked the boss down with all four traps, attacked him, then lost with a sliver of HP left. I realized I shouldn't have force/breaked right away and I ended up spending 20 turns just attacking because I had nothing else to use. I don't know what my hexer should be doing aside from keeping up curses after I afflict with every bind and resistance starts kicking in. I ended up moving her to the front and getting her to hit him with her staff.

Assassinate gets a bonus to its success rate on things hit with ailments, you really shouldn't be trying to proc that without hitting something with one. Swift Edge is usually the better option anyhow, unless your target is inflicted with Sleep(which wears off after one hit). I found the double slice thing useful early game against enemies hit with ailments that keep them from attacking reliably, or while Shadow Cloak is up, but you're probably past that point by now. You really need to max out ailments to get the most out of them though, especially Poison Throw that gets a damage boost from putting points into it. Against bosses some things are going to whiff a few times, but when something works it'll usually give you enough time to setup or recuperate as needed with little risk so they're still a powerful option. Arcanist has a move that removes accured resistance to ailments and the Black Mist Burst Skill lets them last longer on things that have them, you'll want both of those in a team that makes heavy use of ailments or binds.
