Today all I've done is tracked down a bug that was created a deleted actor instantly when playing as a standalone executable. An Epic employee asked me to send him a project and in getting it ready, I found out that if you don't have a Player Start actor in your scene, it will automatically create/delete one somehow and it won't get garbage collected. So I'm assuming that's a bug, but possibly I'm just not understanding how something works.

Yesterday I added a way to view the controls and I added a slider for motion blur since everyone complains about it in my webms since it looks bad with low framerate.

He's happy to admit that he makes "eroge" games but he has a disorder where he can't agree with people or allow them to be right. So when agdg discovered his newgrounds "erotic games" his mental disorder clicked and he decided he would lie forever about having made those games because admitting that agdg found something of his is too much for him to handle. Even though he could just use it as further resume material and proof that he's an eroge dev it's too late, because that would mean admitting that agdg was right, which he considers to be as bad as losing an argument. He has issues.

Funny right?
The purple outlines alone seal the deal. Yes anime uses purple/blue outlines but cmon... he's just impersonating them as always in a way no other western person does. Googum made these games.

I've considered that he's just hoping this "mystery" will add controversy and increase his appeal but for me personally I can't respect someone who denies their own work. He's ashamed that he drew boxy panty-clad vaginas for newgrounds views back in the day. There is no mystery. His current "eroge" is probaby equally as autistic.

I think I got a handle on the timer and the game loop. It draws every 1/60th of a second, but the game logic updates by delta time. The game loop is a while loop, which honestly feels dirty, but I don't think there's another way that is platform-independant.

progress
I optimized the missiles, now I can have hundreds of them without the game becoming a slideshow. I mostly slimmed down the start function, so the instantiation is less performance heavy and then changed the explosion effect for something far more simple.

Also added a shitty score at the top of the screen, you get 10 points per second, 100 for every kill and a score multiplier that's 1/100 of your kill count

I read the discord/op sticky thing but I still have no clue where to start. I want to learn coding so I figure, why not develop a simple little game while I'm learning. Now people have told me to learn C to C# to C++, others say I can just start at any language, which is a more preferred method if any of you have experience? What engine should I use in this regard? Just going to try my hand at a simple sprite action game.

Start with Gamemaker. That's the fastest way to get a 2D game. They have lots of tutorials, and an active community. Many people here use GM so it'll be easier for you to get answers. It's not the best framework for everything, but it's beginner friendly.

Tonight I am keeping it simple and adding some ambient sounds. I've got some oinking sounds for the pigs. Mostly I'm just doing this for later when I add water sounds, fire sounds, etc. I've got an ambient sound blueprint set up which registers each sound with my sound manager, so that when an audio slider changes value, it updates all ambient sounds in the level. It already did this with music, so I just had to update it.

>there's no reason to deny it
There is if you understand gogem's disorder. He was raised without any adult telling him he's wrong or stupid. This is why he created a game glorifying school shootings to get attention and his media persona is someone who shoots snarky tweets at grieving mothers. Nobody every told him things he did were wrong or stupid, he has been pampered his entire life .

He's 30+ years old, has never had a job, has leeched off his parents his whole life, and admitting that strangers on the internet could figure him out is too much for him to comprehend. So something as simple as agdg finding past games of him is unacceptable, because that would mean people who are not himself were right about something.

This is further demonstrated by the innumerable arguments about things like random number generation, smears, gamejam games, etc. gogem has had on agdg. He cannot admit when another person has a valid point even when he contradicts himself (like he does by milking his own game jam game for 2+ years).

Every post, literally every post of googem's in agdg has been him arguing or trying to +1 random posts with a witty remark. It is unacceptable that we would ever "catch" him on something like lying about making eroge games on newgrounds. It is however in his mind acceptable to say he makes eroge games, but never show us which ones.

(You) got me
If you're serious, I believe the gist of games IP is that characters and plot and names are generally protected, but not gameplay mechanics(unless you're a huge studio). So generally you have to execute the idea well and rely on a combination of marketing and luck to get your game noticed. You WILL get cloned if your game is good. Hopefully you make some money and get some dev cred, despite the clones, and hopefully the Threes/2048 situation doesn't happen to you. (Although I read an interesting take on that, which was that 2048 was actually the better game because it's mechanics were simpler for players to pick up. Threes had 1 and 2 tiles that combined into a 3, but 2048 started right away with the doubling.)

If you're asking about marketing, good job on thinking about it before you launch, but you can probably afford to wait until your game is partway finished.

is it a cool idea to have different play styles if you were to use a keyboard/mouse vs a gamepad for a PC game? for example my game is meant to be comfy, so having the option to use a gamepad is necessary for maximum snugness and shit, but my current implementation where you control a "cursor" on screen with the right analog stick feels awkward, but is quick and intuitive if you were to use a mouse and keyboard. what I could do is automatically place the "cursor" over your targeted NPC and basically auto-aim if you're using the gamepad but it would be a pretty different experience overall
>>
>>153437865
I'm pretty sure YOU are shitposting here, but if not, then it varies by country. In the US at least basically so long as you publish something original then you own any associated trademarks without needing to register anything. You can register trademarks if you really want but this is generally not necessary. Talk to a lawyer if you want anything more specific but in the meantime just like, make game.

Also unlike other hobbies, where if you finish that battle ship model in the battle you have been working on for years, nobody gives a shit, but every time you release a new game it is like a small lottery ticket for me, at any point i can hit some sweet spot in the market, word of mouth can stat going on and i will make $100k and be able to retire. nothing, i just find it funny how people here can have realistic opinions about game dev, but when it comes to the marketing and PR part of the game dev, their views are completely skewed and they thing it's simple as fuck like "Oh i will just send out couple of mails to review sites and youtubers, buy couple adds and slap my game on steam and wait for the money to roll in". But mercifully, they are spared of the cruel dose of reality where their game would make like RRPS, because they never finish and and never release it and thus don¨t have to deal with the devastating feels of nobody giving a shit.

A lot of this is because people simply don't know how to get themselves traction. Your game is not going to get famous simply because it is a good game, unless you are very lucky. You need to advertise it in some way. Twitter, tumbler, /agdg/, reddit. All of these are means to get your game out there. If you do art might as well steam it on twitch, what's the worst that could happen?

Another this is know your target audience. Appeal to them as much as your game allies. Some may call this pandering, but honestly it's just good business practice.

The next things are consistency and persistence. Your first game may not get traction, but it will build a following. People advertise your game for you through discussion FOR FREE. As long as the game was good & fun it will breed some form of loyal customer.

You can also try the break out route of contacting every fucking lets player and streamer you can. Make an impassioned plea for them to play your game, and provide them a free steam key. If you're lucky a few will play it, and thus their fans will see it as well. Try contacting folks IRL, that's something important. it's much easier to make a connection in real life.

Do give aways. Everyone loves free stuff. Free stuff gives you publicity. Publicity means the people who didn't win free stuff want the stuff that was free.

Doing all of these things is by no means a guarantee, but it helps your chances to at least cover that Greenlight fee.

It seems most game devs do not fail in the Greelight stage. They fail in development with the game never actually getting completed.

If you make it past greenlight it seems like most things sell "reasonably" well. If you advertised, build a community, etc. even more so.

Doing a dumb little shooter from a tutorial with LÖVE. I wanted to do real projects for a while but now I realize it is a better idea to just follow an easy tutorial and modify things here and there for starters. I think when I make a "real" game I will have to use an object oriented language though, Lua seems unfit for anything remotely elaborate.

I wonder, is there some chart that lists profits for indie games after greenlight?

First determine when you want the menu to pop up. When the condition is met, use instance_create() in an "Execute a piece of code" action within the step event... Maybe for your objPlayer?

Once that menu object is up, use the Draw Event to draw the texture on the screen, then draw the buttons within the Step Event.

You'll want to get more familiar working with the Game Maker Language (GML) and be less reliant on the UI/Drag-drop interface, thinking of concepts in more abstract ways... The rest is just Googling tutorials for specific pieces of what you're trying to code.

Take this with a massive grain of salt.

Steam spy says there are 5888 "indie" games, and there are 642,890,518 total copies owned. With an average price of $8.49 we have this:

(642890518/5888)*8.69*(1/3) = 316277.094736

So an average of 316k profit per game.

need help on that too.
I tried google for pop up menu, custom menu, etc.
But i can't find anything similar to it.

anyway,
what i said was correct?
there's no way to create the whole pop-up menu as one object.
i have to create a menu background obj, button obj, where background obj will create the button obj.

Btw, i need someone to confirm if i'm doing this right.
I have a game logic that have to run on room created.
Currently, i created an object with no_sprite and run the code there.
It works fine, but i'm wondering if i'm doing it correctly.

5k * $10 price or 10k * $5 price is 50k, take steam's cut and taxes and you have $30k. That's ok for a year's work on a "fun" project.

>>153443904
I'm assuming you want the menu controlled by the mouse like your pic related earlier. Make a single objMenu, then make a sprite for:
- The menu background
- A button, one animation frame pressed, the next animation frame unpressed

In your step event, check the mouse position if it's inside of a particular box where you're spawning the menu (which should be spawned at a particular position, using the instance_create() function). Using the box technique and eep track of which buttons are on and which ones are off.

In your objMenu's draw event, set the image_speed of the object to 0 and draw your buttons onto the screen. Then, use the draw_sprite() function to draw the menu background and buttons onto the screen, using the on/off variables for the "subimage animation frame to use", drawing the button sprites at the same coordinates you're checking the mouse for... Also make sure that you click "Center" in each of your sprites so their origin is centered. Use sprMenuBackground for your object's collision mask and don't make it use a sprite, because all your sprites are manually drawn in the Draw Event.

... I hope that isn't too confusing.

You know what's crazy to think about? Rotatedev and Theonian could have been rich.

What happened?
>>
>>153443873
>>153443687
So here is another thing.

Do you think you can hit the top half of indie steam games? Because the middle selling number is 12800 copies.

If you sell you game for say, $12.99 you'll be looking at:
12800*12.99*(1/3) = 55.4k

If you hit the top third you're looking at 34.5k sold.

34500*12.99*(1/3) = 149.3k

If you hit the top fourth you'll get 69.9k copies:
69900*12.99*(1/3) = 302.6k

If you hit top ten percent you'll get 217.5k copies:
217500*12.99*(1/3) = 941775

And finally the top one percent will net you a massive 1.63m copies sold for:
1635900*12.99*(1/3) = 7083447

However like I said. Most games die before ever hitting the steam store. Just think of it in terms of "can I beat roughly half my competitors?". The answer is yes, but people are retards, even game devs Especially game devs.
>>
>>153444337
I get the temptation of imitating successful game concepts but I really don't understand how people can put so much work in a copy. I guess that shit sells.
>>
>>153444339
Did you mean to multiply by 1/3 there, to account for taxes in addition to steam cuts? Steam only takes 1/3, leaving you with 2/3.
>>

>>153443998

why is there so much crap in in the ue4/unity marketstores?

I mean there are some genuine good stuff there, but most of seems like epic/unity is so desperate for content they don't bother quality control any of it.

Does anyone actually use someones else simplistic modules like say a character stats management, pay 5$ for a map you can print to screen

Or 5$ for a raycast that prints distance

rpgmaker itself isn't shit, it's just that the vast majority of the users think themselves genious jrpg creators and release bland unfinished shit

If you got some experience then really any decent 2d engine will do, especially if you got programming skills as you would be able to differentiate your game

But since you are asking that question here then that doesn't apply to you, stick with rpgmaker, atleast you will get something done

I see what you're saying, but it does take place in a cellar entered from the second story. Is there a way to create the feeling of that tightness in a 2-story environment? I doodled an upper level region that could perhaps hold storage or more tables. It still desperately lacks spacial density in the upper center and righter regions though. Maybe the balcony but with the total width of the room shrunken? More structure on the second level?

A tightness factor could also be added by making the ceiling an arch. Takes away a lot of space and adds an old-timey basement style to the scene. Pic related.

Hi. I've made a pretty significant amount of progress since my last post, too much to show off in just one webm (speaking of, sorry about the compression). Here's a list of all the new features:

- Foreground/background layers to create a floor and doorways (current visuals are edited from Smash TV)
- Score & score tallying
- Several different powerups and a system that randomly drops a power up every 15-ish seconds
- Sound functionality (no sounds are in yet though)
- Enemy waves are now counted/pushed using arrays instead of my old system, which is much faster and requires a lot less background processing
- Room boundaries are now cut out from a pre-made tileset so I no longer have to assemble level wall boundaries by hand; instead it's done automatically by a local number I gave to the camera objects.

Next up is making a shop layout and an inventory array so the player can spend their score on passive powerups.
>>
>>153450074
Also, I'm looking for an artist because obviously I don't want the final visuals to be edited from a real thing, so if anyone knows a good place to ask around for one please let me know

If you want, you can "wane" yourself off of procrastinating by

1. Choose 1 task for the day and say "This is the most important. If I only do one thing to day, it should be this." It can be arbitrary but the less so the better.

2. Still procrastinate, but in controlled bursts. For example, for every 20 minute episode of some show you need to get one task done.

GM got labeled as a bad engine cause it gives the option to use the drag UI.

The drag and drop engine, though it is indeed user friendly, it slows your progress, and it's toxic to use it in the long run.

I control absolutely everything in code, and it is going pretty good.

I didn't try Unity nor UE4 yet, so I'm not the wisest in this subject, I just wanted to give my 2 cents.

As far as 2D gamedev goes, Game Maker is horrible with optimization, but it has a lot of easy-to-use functions and its own language (GML) that gives you enough power to make professional-level stuff.

There's much better alternatives, but I'd still recommend Game Maker for mockups and also for newbie devs just starting. The GML syntax is a decent "babby's first programming language".

He's not really wrong m8s, neither Unity nor UE4 are really made for large amounts of pathfinding units running about, nor have much out of the box features that help for a strategy game. It's just not really playing to the engine's strongpoints. It all depends on what he wants to do anyway, if he just wants to make a Starcraft formula RTS it won't be a problem, if he intends to make something in the style of Total War, then it would become harder.

That said I haven't really looked into strategy game devving on those two engines, only thing I know that is really annoying is that UE4's inbuilt terrain doesn't let you reduce the polycount of it, so it's always a lot of tris which you might not need or want when your camera is high up in the air.
>>
>>153456712
right, why would you want to actually learn something, when you can instead use game maker
even rpg maker uses a real programming language last time i checked
>>
>all those enginebabys
right, why would you want to actually learn something, when you can instead use existing engine
>>
>>153456854
Again though, some people just want to make a game, but can't program, and Game Maker has a lot of ready-to-use functions to make that happen. The problem with the other options is that some people don't want to put as much effort in learning a more sophisticated programming language just to re-invent the wheel for functions, like drawing sprites onto the screen.

RPG Maker uses Ruby, but last I checked that language grew irrelevant over time.
>>

Epic literally have their own moba.
Yes mobas are diluted RTS, but let's not pretend you're going to be making anything that will bottle-neck the engine.

I'm staying with my point that him and """You""" are both casual shitters who can't make anything if there isn't a template to do all the work for you.

>>153457045
Anything is hackable, and there's no way to stop that unfortunately. The most you can do is attempt to make your own encryption/obfuscation system, but (personally, I believe) it's not worth the effort, unless your game was online-based or something and actually needed a form of security.
>>
>>153457019

Man there was a time when all people would talk about was fucking Ruby and most of all Rails. I swear to fucking God I got tired of hearing about that shit, glad to see it's irrelevant now.
>>
>>153456846
if you want to make something akin to Total War or anything worthwhile in general you will have to tweak some stuff to your liking and needs anyways. Using the inbuilt terrain system of UE4 is a bad idea for anything since it is optimised for nothing.

I've never made an RTS but I am confident that I could create the framework in UE4 in a week and the same goes for anyone that uses Unity with some basic knowledge.

By having an empty stomach. I'm not even joking.

Don't eat anything when you wake up. Chew gum. Drink water. But don't eat anything. Not even snacks.
First small meal (500 kcal) can be at 16:00, second small meal at 20:00 (500 kcal), and one big meal at 22:00 (1000 kcal).
Now of course you shouldn't eat less, just at different times. Do not eat anything until its very late in the evening.

I've found this keeps me focused, clear headed and has the same effect as caffeine without the caffeine.
Also do cardio at least once / week. Go out running for an hour.

I'm pretty sure the reason NMS ran like it did was shitty and lazy devs. It has no right to run as shit as it does, it doesn't have crazy detailed graphics, it doesn't have any crazy complex particle effects or fucking anything. Technologically, Spore did almost the same things NMS does 10 years ago it ran better on worse hardware. Space Engine does literal simulated space (unlike nms even though it was promised) and it runs better. Freespace2 had space battles with giant freighters that could warp in (unlike nms even though it was in the trailer) and it ran better 17 fucking years ago.

You ever worry that maybe you're too lazy to make video games?
>>
Does anyone else feel like Unity's architecture is really inelegant?

All gameObjects have a transform, but not all gameObjects (even those implemented by the engine) need it. For example, a UI Canvas has a transform despite being nothing more than an intermediate object used by the camera. I realize that the reason for this is that the Transform component also contains the dependency information, but that seems to be the core issue - Unity confuses conceptual dependency with spatial dependency.

I'm making an open-source game with a couple of programmer buddies, I don't have any budget to speak of and there will be no revenue cause it's free so I can't afford to hire people, yet a couple amateur voice actors would be awesome at least for the main characters because it's a comedy game and the jokes would be so much better when voiced instead of written. I have access to a good place for recording and I can afford a decent mic. How hard is it to find people to do some free voice over? How should I go about finding and convincing them?

I don't know why they don't start targeting the market that is actually using the kinect - researchers. There's some amazing technology in that stupid thing and it's such a waste to pour it all into video games.
>>
>>153464713
I've always felt like a UI canvas should just be treated as a material. if you want an overlay UI then assign the material as a post process. If you want a world space UI then assign the material to an object in the world. This would be far more robust than just duplicating the functionality in another system.

Researchers don't need marketing to, if the Kinect was in their sphere of research then they knew about it before it was released. Besides, vision research far surpassed what the Kinect can do years ago.

>>
>>153464713
Generally it works, gameObjects should usually only be objects which need to exist in 3D/2D space. Problem is many devs get confused and create a sword gameObject, then put all the sword data into a MonoBehaviour. Now your sword data is tied to a gameObject, and you're fucked. Even some tutorials encourage it.

>>
>>153466939
Even Unity itself does it though. A lot of things that should just be components end up being gameObjects in their own API, presumably because they want to reduce the time it takes for nodevs to get something on the screen (at the cost of yesdev productivity navigating the mess of an API)

I can't afford a degree. I want to join a studio and be a part of a team making video games.

I'll join and win game dev contests. I'll make my own games and build a portfolio. I'll join indie game start-ups and work for free. I'll sacrifice the rest of my life to making games, just as I've sacrificed my entire life up until now to making/playing games as well as the related hobbies.

There has got to be a point where effort, self study, commitment, and production of work has to bypass having a piece of paper that says I studied some random subject like computer science.

>>

Since you don't have any industry experience you will be applying for internships first. If you are looking for a programming internship and do not have a CS degree, make sure you still have a good foundation on programming and know the programming language and possibly engine used for the position. List projects you worked on in your resume and be prepared to talk about them in detail. Group projects and projects that were completed are the best. Also if you can show up at a game conference or show and talk to people there. If you start by meeting them in person you will have a major advantage over all the faceless resumes.

If you want to be a game programmer you need a CS degree from a reputable university. Game programming at AAA level isn't something you can just self-teach yourself into.

If you want to do a creative role, just make things that look good. You don't really need a formal education for those jobs.

Everyone has their own "stupid yet infuriating bug that you can't fix because you're not quite sure what's causing it in the first place because there's absolutely, positively no reason for it to exist in the first place" in our daily dev lives, what's yours right now?

For me, my number drawing script works completely fine, save for the number 2 which is offset by a pixel to the left despite being handled exactly the same as the rest.

Posting one more time because I'm a huge faggot who can't make decisions on his own. Witch's Brew Dev here asking some questions. Witch's brew is a resource management rogue like game where you play as a witch who lives at the edge of a town. You help towns folk and try to not get a mob to come kill you.

I'm here to ask a few questions. I would greatly appreciate answers:

Should events be entirely random, partially scripted/partially randoms, or entirely scripted?
http://www.strawpoll.me/11116589

Should I add a raw health stat for the witch in case of bodily injury?
http://www.strawpoll.me/11116600

Cute witch girl or old crone?

>What in either prevents you from making a system to do this?
If you're going to make that system then you might as well just make the rest of the engine. The rendering engine is trivial compared to the infrastructure required to feed it, and that's what you would have to build to make a reasonably robust RTS in Unreal.

>Both's "strong points" are rendering shit to a screen on multiplatforms.
I think you're confusing Unreal with GLFW.

I fixed bullets lagging behind the player while moving quickly by adding the player's velocity to them for a short amount of time until the next bullet fires. Technically this means they move diagonally until making a short bend but it still ends up looking more correct.
