So far I've got:
Window
Renderer: draws to the given window, for sprites, text and primitive shapes (for debugging)
Input: keeps the states of all input at the time, plus edge-triggered states (so: isHeld, wasPressed, wasReleased)
Assets: keeps a storage of all used assets, to avoid redundant memory useage
World: this is the most game-logic part of it, but I want some heavy lifting in C++ as opposed to Lua, so this will contain the game objects and systems which act on them (Movement, Collision, etc)
Timer: used to track game time and FPS, etc.

(I'll be leaving Audio and such for later)
What else do I need to account for or how can I split these up in a cleaner way?

If splitting something into different systems isn't obviously necessary, don't bother. Like, why do the Window and Renderer need to be separate? Why isn't "game time" part of World and why isn't FPS part of Renderer/Window? Also, having an independent asset system isn't useful. You can write generic code to be reused for asset management between the renderer and audio systems, for example, but don't try and treat all assets the same because there's zero benefit and a lot of potential drawbacks.

Working on an Open-Source Smash Bros engine with an easy-to-use character builder. Basically, a Smash MUGEN. It's still got a lot of problems, primarily a big lag issue I've got to figure out and a lack of AI or online play making it difficult to actually play it yet. Making good progress though.

I was thinking of that.

Basically make the overworld the main gameplay. The idea is you WANT to avoid combat, but then have defenses you upgrade for the combat.

Then the length of the level or the number of enemies will be based on the danger / profitability of the mining location / trade route.

But is it really compelling watching your ship move and turrets shoot for a minute or two with no real interaction? I kind of don't actually think so even though to me it looks cool as shit.

I guess I could add some kind of buffing or targetting minigame but that's lame...

1. There's basically a billion guys like you, you are an ideaguy. Nobody wants to work with you unless you have skills that contribute to the actual game, and no, "project manager" does not contribute to the actual game.

Considering you need to create the window (and do other things) differently in SDL to use OpenGL compared to the built-in renderer, I'd say that's even more reason to put them together.

Fair point. I guess it'd be just as easy to make another RenderWindow when the time comes to make the switch to OpenGL.
The other reason I'd had is that the responsibilities of the two are different. That is, the Window would control window events (resizing, etc.) as well as the title of the window. Not too much.
The Renderer, however, would deal with the actual drawing of sprites and whatever else. And I guess shaders? But I don't know much about shaders at this point.
Thanks for the input, though. Because I do see how they could be more conveniently combined.

And I put the resources in the same place for convenience really. I could make a templated resource cache and instantiate each one separately.

Consider what a window is, though: it's a box where your rendered image goes. That's it. Although it can have certain responsibilities related to input, such as providing a mouse position within the image.

It's not convenient to have all the resources in one place. It's convenient to have them where they will be used. No reason the rendering system can't own its texture cache, and no reason the audio system can't own its music streamer.

My biggest tip as far as software design goes is to pass everything around. If this becomes cumbersome, it's probably indicative of a flaw in your architecture (e.g. something depending on way too many other things, and it needs to be split up). The other effect is that you end up with much more straightforward code.

Make an automatic map, but with limited detail. Casual players won't care, and hardcore players will want to keep track of more information so they'll make their own map.

IMO, it doesn't matter. An example of a similar thing that *does* piss me off, however, is the randomized potion mechanic in Delver. There are two ways to learn what a new potion does - drink it and see the effect, or break it and identify by sound and colour. The latter is a perfect example of a power user technique, and doesn't require tracking in the game. However, the drinking technique only randomly names the potion in-game, even though it's plainly obvious what it is otherwise. If you have something for convenience, make it work all the time.

I'm usually not a huge fan of minimaps in games that emphasize exploring, but in a dungeon crawler like that I'd add one. Make it toggleable in the settings so the hardcore neckbeards can break out the graph paper.

My reasoning is games like that usually use almost entirely identical tiles for the vast majority of the maps. If you don't want to add a minimap, I'd recommend you have a ton of visually unique tiles to serve as landmarks.

I'm writing an engine with SDL2 and I have a test with it right now that calls RenderCopyEx for 400 different objects all sharing the same texture. When I have the destination size set to 100x100 everything runs fine (average 2-3ms per frame) but when I set the destination size to 300x300 the average immediately jumps at 200 objects from 2-3ms to huge lagspikes up to 25-35ms. Is that normal? I wouldn't question it since I'm testing this on a shitty laptop but the immediate jump in framerate with nothing in between is confusing me.

Alright so I'm not gonna lie I've got no experience in game-development whatsoever. All I've done is throw ideas around in my head and consider what looks good. What's a good engine to create an isometric game with 2-D sprites? And this is the other part of my progress; the buttons you see actually do things now. All beginner characters start with a weak healing move that expends energy (usable on self and others) because it seems like the moral thing to do. Defend will soak up a 1/3 of incoming damage, maybe a tank character will do 1/2 damage nullification instead.

Motivate...motivates your character, randomly buffs your defense or your attack power next turn for free, and increments your hidden motivation stat. If your character's motivation counter hits a certain threshold when you Motivate, the character will get to act three times in a row if he survives to the next turn.

Run, lets you run, random % chance and all that. It takes you to the victory screen right now though, but should be fixed tomorrow.

Is path finding the best way to determine whether or not a location is accessible?

For example, if I were to spawn a door that requires a key, I would not want to spawn that key on the other side of the door. Is there a better way? I have a minimal spanning tree implemented for all the rooms if that helps.

While we're on the subject of IK being a bitch, how do you make a rig that only bends specific body parts and doesnt deform the entire model? I have a lowpoly (as in 449 tris) and I just want to move the legs and arms and whatnot like they're on mannequin joints, not like they're actual flesh.

Shoot reference video of yourself doing the animation, a lot of takes so you really understand the motion and have good reference to work from. The real trick here is that by running through the motion yourself many times trying to perfect it you get an intuitive "feel" for how the motion should be. Then you use your reference to get the mechanics down but tweak your animation to feel the way you know it should from experience.

Also buy/download a copy of the animator's survival kit
