Well if you don't want to spend ten in game years making pump stacks and killing your FPS then a minecart with magma is, as far as I'm informed, the cheapest and simplest way to transport magma. In a year after carving all the tracks you can quite possibly have ten or more magma forges up and running.

Generaly speaking you have as much reason to play this as any other game.

A reason to play it compared to other games would be that for one it leaves a lot to your imagination, that it sometimes crosses the boundary between a game and a job, but not in a chore kind of a way, that gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you get things to act exactly the way you wanted them to go, and that it's a pretty great sandobox to build and make stuff in.

Guild my fort in such a way that everyone wanting to enter would have to walk through a waterfall, for the purpose of hygiene. Unfortunately, all this lead to is a huge pool of the shit I wanted to keep out right inside the fort entrance. How the hell do I clean it? None of the dwarves have cleaned it manually, even after I assigned burrows and disabled all labors but cleaning and so on and so forth.

This ancient bug report describes dwarf cleaning behavior, and includes pretty detailed comments on what conditions will motivate a dwarf to clean. You should be able to figure out a solution from it.

Also you should note the information in this only-slightly-more-ancient bug report since flowing water is involved.

so... pic related just happened.

This is apparently the Lord Consort of a neighboring civilization, and she even brought an entourage with her: a swordsman and a bowman.

I'd like to accept her residency request just for the two soldiers, but I'm kinda iffy. She IS a noble, after all. If I accept her, will she make demands and mandates? Or if she doesn't, will she still have her noble room quality requirements and just go insane because of lack of accomodations?

Also, let's say she suffers a mysterious accident while in my fort, would that lead to any negative consequences with her civilization? Like how if you kill a diplomat it can lead to that civ declaring war on you?
>>
>>152729107
>>152730821
Okay, I figured out the real problem. I have a constructed temple protruding from the cliff face above the dirty spot. This makes the tile light and above ground, but inside. This means that rain can't reach it, but dwarves won't clean it. I guess http://bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=1140 isn't entirely gone.
>>
>>152732889
Looks pretty effective, but goddamn am I cringing at all that wasted meat. Stick a butcher shop down there or something.
>>
>>152733393
You mean like, degrades into nothing? Never.

The teeth bits will stick around forever, and while the main bodies and limbs will decay down into stacks of bones after 3-4 years, those bones will never decay further. Ya gotta dump em manually.
>>
>>152733896
Oh, oops, it's a man, not a woman. For some reason I always read the Consort roles backward. Like 'Lord Consort' as 'the Lord's Consort' and not 'a Consort who is also a Lord.'
>>
>>152734096
I've got 4.5k meat and 1000 prepared meals for 60 dwarves already, thinking about dumping some of it into magma
>>
>>152734017
You might still be able to get them to clean an adjacent square if one is underground. Cleaning affects a 1 tile radius around the targeted tile, so maybe you catch the offending tile that way.
>>
>>152729107

Workaround: build a bag or chest or weapon rack or any other 1x1 pathable object on the spot. Then deconstruct it.

Presto! Clean furrowed san--

Oh. It's on a bridge. Tile's fucked, mate.

>>
>>152734620
Yes, I know. There is 1 tile on the far edge of the waterfall that is underground, and each time I cancelled the station one dwarf would walk over and clean it. However, the area I need to be cleaned is 4 tiles wide and 3 tiles away from the underground tile.

>>152734679
Fuckin' rip.
I don't suppose raising then dropping the bridge would fling the contaminants to somewhere harmless? I'd do it to find out but it would be a significant investment of time to block off access, since it's the main hallway and only entrance of the fort.

I've gotten lucky enough that nothing with dangerous extract/blood has attacked (actually it's been almost 4 years and I've gotten nothing but a couple of goblin sieges and a lone giant. This is the longest any of my forts have gone with no forgotten beasts.), but if something did my dwarves would be in serious trouble.

There actually is something you can do about it, but it'll take quite a lot of effort, especially if it's a primary thoroughfare. Simply do what >>152734679 said, but first you have to deconstruct the bridge and then build a floor in that spot so you can put something there. I don't know offhand which buildings will autoclean the tiles they're built on and which won't, but workshops have worked for me in the past.

>>
>>152735232
>I don't suppose...
Nope. Contaminants aren't really items, they're more like tile attributes that can stick to creatures or objects that share a tile. Even removing the bridge and rebuilding won't help, the contaminants will just hang in the air, and stick to a new bridge if build one.
>>
>>152735972
Hm. I guess I'll try >>152735932 then. It'll certaintly be disruptive, but it's a major flaw in my fort's defense and it could potentially bring the whole fort down if I don't fix it sooner rather than later.

To elaborate, he wasn't even using his weapon. He just went around snapping people's spines with his bare hands like he was Bane or some shit. Then he'd leave them on the ground to suffocate.

Imagine if you're at a party and everybody's having a good time when suddenly an angry midget covered head to toe in steel plate and chain mail stomps up the stairs, onto the dance floor, and punches somebody in the gut so hard his spine explodes and he lays there twitching until he dies horribly, while the midget just goes back downstairs to ruin somebody else's day.

Here is my strategy

1. Find a location with no aquifer, trees, and fresh water

2. 2 carpenter/wood cutters 2 mason/miners 2 growers and 1 mechanic/building designer. Focus on putting points in plump helmets

3. Pause and mark mode a future well and design of a fortress to house the population cap of 200 dwarfs, including special marks for where you will put traps in the future

4. Get the farm and carpenter workshop going, as well as the bedrooms, then after that, focus on getting the fortress well with two flood gates going in order to allow the dwarfs to drink while in the fortress under the ground.

5. Finish off about 20 dwarf populations worth at a time and be sure to have 1 soldier for every 10 dwarfs from the start while focusing on traps for protection. Be sure to finish off making the graveyard, a dining hall, some more workshops, stockpiles, and things like that.

6. Be patient and be sure you have traps for the random events. If you must and embarked in ice, dig to the cavern level quickly. Work your way to the lava and build up from there.

A still that's worked 24/7 will easily produce plenty of drink as long as you have barrels and plants. If your brewers are fucking around somewhere else then your stocks will probably plummet but that's why you have dedicated brewers.

Keep in mind that each brew gives you 25 drinkable alcohol. It's pretty difficult to have a hundred dwarves drinking at a rate that outpaces that sort of production.

Also the fuck are those bedrooms, make some chests and cabinets for God's sake.

Just noob way to bring water on lower levels to make well, it involve doors because I only properly learned how to handle flood gates after I made this fort.

Problem is that one tunnel is between 2 stockpiles and they also take shortcuts by it. It is normally dry unless I need more water downstairs. Flood gate separate tunnel connected to surface lake while there is hole in ground what lead to lower tunnel, I lost few dwarfs and non dwarfs in it already and now decided to cover it.
I may post pictures later to show stupid design later.

Last thread an anon posted up a pet cave spider they had made, which are neat, but not the type I was after, so I took the template they had and modified it into a pet huntsman which should gallop around ridiculously fast nomming on vermin, gave it a mild necrosis to "pre-digest" prey, won't be bad on larger critters, and kept the paralysis to incapacitate food. Gave them a good deal sharper and faster bite though, since this is not a web hunter.

So... the dwarven population almost multiplied tenfold in a single hamlet in 2 years? Why?
>>
>>152796510
I am terrified of trying to get close to that hamlet, I know it is next to a town which kept getting sieged, and there were refugee tents all over the place outside said town.

Maybe the tents overlapped into the hamlet so it counted them as settling there?

I think the polar bear men happened because one of the goblin civs took over the forest retreat which had been sieging that town (and also the one I dragged a hydra through before letting it settle there and then killing it later) so they inherited the ability to have polar bear and raven man citizens?

I mean, literally any other time that would be the most ridiculous thing taking place, if not for Tunnelabbey somehow not collapsing into a black hole.

>>152797243
236 thousand of those dwarves ARE ALL IN THE SAME HAMLET, which originally had 147 living there, before 17 and then another 219 THOUSAND dwarves somehow came into existence during a span of 2 years.

I mean, fuck, the combined population of elves, goblins, and humans is now dwarved by the polar bear men living in one dark fortress with 3 thousand raven men?

I don't even know where to start on the bug report, I think I'll just link it to the campsite population explosion one?

This is a 33x33 world with a 25k histfig cap, kidnapped victims are histfigs.

Oh wait, I was mistaken, I didn't notice the name of the civ in charge at that site, which again, THIS would be the point of interest normally.

>20: Stosbbslusp, "Hatedropes", dark fortress
> Owner: The Gloss of Winter, elves
> Parent Civ: The Heather of Sweltering, elves
> administrator: Romimi Fragrantcurled, goblin
> 1732 goblins

> 30 cougar men
> 5 ostrich men
> 48 skunk men
> 61 elf visitors
> 1 goblin visitor
> 1 human visitor
> 8 goblin outcasts
> 42 elf outcasts

That'll teach them to conquer a dark fortress, hoisted by their own polar bear man petard!

Wait, strike that... it's been under elf control the whole time? I added in the original values for those races.
>>
>>152798065
That's what I thought too till I googled it. It's clearly what Toady means, but still, we've technically got mandibles.
>>
>>152799332
So basically The Gloss of Winter is an "elf" civ that is populated solely by polar bear men?
>>
>>152799332
A clue emerges!

Polar bear and raven men went up by 4x then 16x for those two groups, total of 64x the original population.

Unfortunately that doesn't explain why the others at the site didn't change, they gained 17 goblins over 2 years, and the visitors/outcasts number changed a little.

Doesn't line up with the hamlet going 115x > 13x for a total of 1605x for just dwarves, and the 2x > .75x increase in dog population though.

If I remember correctly, animal man pops join civs en masse as a historical event. Maybe some bug caused a repeated "mass immigration" of animal people? Since they're pulled from an abstract body of wild animals, there should be an infinite potential amount of them.
>>
>>152800469
When you build things in a campsite sometimes you get an explosion of wildlife pops where they just linger and keep reloading new wild pops while the old ones remain.

I'm guessing this is similar?

I unretired and walked over there, saving beforehand, dropped out of fast travel in the hamlet.

So, I was ready to kill the process when I approached Tunnelabbey again, this time I dropped out near the mead hall.

No change in ram use, it just loads up normally, I walk over, there's like ten or so dorfs in here.

The largest building in this site has 1/23 thousandth the population of the little cluster of houses at the center of the hamlet.

I struggle to decide what to think of MaxTM

On one hand, with his knowledge of the game, he's a voice of reason in the bay12 community, where most members don't know shit about how the game works. It's also pretty interesting to read his blog posts in the general, especially since he experiments a lot.

On the other hand, he, along with Rumrusher(who is also a voice of reason on bay12), has an absolutely cringe-worthy sense of humour. He also mentioned once that he had a collection of fedoras.

I guess he's a pretty cool guy in the end, who contributes a lot both to bay12 and to /dfg/.

I've been through like 100 different worlds since I began playing df in 2012 and remember to always check and compare worldgen progress since the "world activation" update, but it just seems that populations for all races usually just slowly decline downwards.

Aren't the seaside waves still known to cause significant framerate issues? Every particle of water coming in and out is calculating evaporation, causing tempurature calculations, and doing math in contrast to the water nearby it.

I usually have framerate fuckery with just waterfalls and rivers branching into two.

They aren't breeding, 147 producing 29710 in a year is absurd, but even 29710 producing 236,608 in a year is absurd.

It's a lot more than that. As long as they're both eligible for reproduction and not related it's guaranteed. Semimegas are all sentient, so they have the same sexual orientation spread as dwarves. That gives pretty good odds that any given pair will reproduce.
I'm don't know if semimegas that paired off in worldgen will reproduce if they're confined with a different potential partner afterwards.
>>

Yes but don't they all have to be within 10 years of age? And being born in a time before time does not mean you will be of the same age.

>plum brandy
You don't have to guess. By definition it's either made from plums exclusively (unlikely) or grapes and a small amount of plums for flavor. Being 40% abv isn't a remarkable thing, though. That's the industry standard for high proof liquors, and literally anything that can be made to feed yeast can (and has) been distilled to that proof.

>>152836808
Severing limbs actually relieves pain since you can't feel your broken fingers and shattered wrist if your arm gets chopped off at the elbow, and since muscles are less sensitive than bones by a factor of 10, that means that a chipped pinky bone is ten times more painful than a severed arm. You should never sever anything if you want to rack up enough pain to knock something out. Blunt attacks only.
Likewise, never ever attack the neck, head or upper body if you intend to make them succumb to pain. If you damage the nerves in the neck, they become completely immune to pain for the rest of their lives. They might also suffocate eventually if you do enough damage, and they'll be permanently crippled either way, but they will never ever succumb to pain.

He did.
Instead of passing out because a stray arrow bruised your pinky bone, you now have to fracture about 3-4 major bones or 6-8 fingers/toes.
Still, a broken pinky is and always will be ten times more painful than getting a sword lodged in your gut because bones are pretty much the only tissue that actually feels pain.

Then they're likely just local guards patrolling around their hometown.

There is a really strange bug that makes even friendly units follow the adventurer around on the map. If you just keep travelling, they'll grow tired and leave you alone.
>>
>>152846642
Those always say that they're liutenants when asked about their profession. They also only appear in the actual sites, not in the wilderness(bandits encountered in the wilderness will go into lethal combat immediately, not try to rob you).

I've seen this behavior *many* times from the bandit group sent to occupy a hamlet.

I personally attempt to leave them alone. Why? They're usually occupying the town, and although mean, they at least stand between that and something worse, like goblins killing everyone.

Often, they're hired by... necromancer encampments.
>>
>>152846825

They do not. The ones occupying the town, in big blobs like that, identify as soldiers on missions.

Bandits occupying a town normally identify themselves as "soldiers." Asked what they're doing, they say "on an important mission."

They are very likely not of the same origin as the lieutenant types, as the lieutenant types normally appear in worldgen, whereas even a necromancer group that is nothing but 100 zombies + 3 necromancers can occupy a town via 30+ quite living bandits, who identify as soldiers on a mission.

Imperfect forts aren't so bad starting out. If you do end up wanting to restart somewhere else, rather than making a whole new world, after you retire the fort you should check out legends mode and see what took place while you were playing.

Down at the bottom will be the "age of myth" or whichever your world is in, scroll up to see the newest events at the bottom, investigate them and use that to help guide where you plunk your next fort.

It may not be your cup of tea, but I'd at least try out adventure mode too, though most likely your world has bogeymen since you didn't disable them, so you'll have to deal with them (unless you make a jumping spider man) but it is another way to see what is going on around the borders of your fort. Swapping back and forth helps you appreciate where the little dudes running around digging shit and building stuff for you came from, what they go through, and so forth. You might hate it, you might really enjoy it, but the important thing is to remember that you don't have to discard the entire region folder and world when you want to restart.
>>

I think. Armor does too when being hit.
>tfw cleaving through tons of shit and my iron 2 handed sword shows no signs of wear while plebs bust their copper shit apart on my back.

I had a Catal Höyük fort once in 0.40. The dorfs became unhappy very quick from having their meeting area on the roof out in the rain.

The architecture also made the fort pretty hard to defend. If I stationed my soldiers on the roof, they'd try to climb down to get to the enemies, resulting in several of them being cut down pretty quick.

How would you add inmersion and fun realism in adventure mode /dfg/?
>>
>>152867142
>How would you add inmersion and fun realism in adventure mode /dfg/?
You mean if we were Toady?

I'd add the ability to start playing as any hist fig in the world. Depending on the background, family status, entity and profession/position of that hist fig, you'd also get some kind of goal to fulfil. These goals might include things like
>rescue your child from the gobbos
>rescue your wife/spouse from the night troll/hag
>participate in the military operations of your civ
>get a gf
Of course, these goals should change during gameplay. For example, your adventurer might fall in love during the course of the game. It goes without saying that getting that one girl should then become one of your goals. If your child gets kidnapped during play, it should become your goal to save it, et cetera.
>>
>>152867581
I can't agree more, I think the exact same
A solid background for your adventurer is great, but you should live a dinamic life where goals, objectives and dreams are dependant on your sorroundings
>>152867142
I would also add a LOT of flavour text for many many things, telling you a little bit about your sorroundings and what's going on around you
For example:
DF right now
>Get hit by arrow
>lodges in your head
>k
>just pull it out, not like I will bleed out or anything
>the end

How it should be (You should be able to somewhat toggle it off, I know It could get really dense to pay attention to everybody):

>Friend gets hit by an arrow in the arm
>As you were 'paying attention to him' you receive non-verbal info on what's going on
>Your friend trembles and falls to the ground!
>Your friend looks terrified and hopeless!
>''You kill the enemy and go offer help to him''
>''shift+I>arrow>pull
>As you attempt to pull the arrow out, your friend's face starts losing it's colour
>You have failed to pull the arrow! Your friend looks faint
>Try harder
>You pulled the arrow, making th wound bigger!
>Your friend passes out from the horror

After that experience, he will always get scared when confronting a bowman, and his trust for you will be high, because you aided him

Bam, things actually having an impact in people and being told to you

>>152885341
understand that fire is a very strange thing, and that water may not even be able to put it out.
why? the area around the creature will be heated to the temperature of fire, which will cause the water to evaporate before it can even touch the creature long enough to drown it.
even then, there's nothing intrinsic about water actually damaging creatures "made of fire"

thankfully due to being made from a gas it should be incredibly easy to kill it -- even a single punch will end up bisecting the blob and kill it instantly. (upper body and lower body seperation is instant death... the first time)

also, since it's a web shooter, all of its silk SHOULD inherit the trait of being fire immune. if you can, trap it in an appropriate metal cage and setup a forgotten beast silk farm.

Against web spitters you can't use melee militia and expect them to win, you need crossbows or bows.

Creatures made of fire, like anything made of gas, dissolve as soon as they're hit with anything. As long as a shot connects you'll be fine. It's just a matter of knowing the enemy and what to put at it.

Demons are fuckhuge. It's honestly pretty silly that any armor would be able to pretect you from any of their attacks.

Whatever mod you're playing has headgear that doesn't provide full coverage, so some attacks won't be mitigated by the armor at all.

Large and strong enough opponents can just punch straight past armor with the right attacks, but yeah if it didn't say the bascinet was ripped apart it must be sub-100 coverage.

I assume that by "past" you mean "through". Whether or not a successful attack is mitigated by armor without full coverage is just RNG, the strength of size of the attacker doesn't matter.

So I ran into some armed zombies occupying a town, avoided them, and explored the town... ran into a group of living bandits with the same items. These are of the sort that identify as soldiers on missions and follow you around, but they didn't attack.

What an interesting glitch, that makes zombies return to life as bandit servants of a necro.

Back when i still played, people would build 2x2 rooms with steel gratings on the floor and ceilings, and they would lock an infant dwarf in there with a dog. as the dwarf and dog grew hungry, they would eventually start to fight, and as long as the dwarf won, more dogs could be added through the roof. As the years passed by, more and more dogs would be dropped in, forcing the dwarf to fight day and night, eating nothing but raw dog, and drinking nothing but blood.

What emerged was a naked dwarf, armored in scar tissue, and armed with a maxed out grappling skill.

Does that shit still work?

It never worked. In all the games that they tried that (iirc called dwarven childcare), they never managed to make it work, let alone arrive at a profit.

The new method (iirc called dwarven daycare) involves making sure they have cloth or leather protection for all locations (boots gloves cloaks and... pants I think? at a minimum) and 4/7 swimming pools and wooden training spear danger rooms.

THOSE work just fine, and lead to Legendary Everything dorf kids that are fuckhuge and able to tear anything short of a megabeast apart.

no, for the same reason no one watches DF let's plays:
0. BOTH adventure and fortress mode is impossible to see (thin font + shit stream compression = unreadable text) if it's not setup properly
1. new fortresses fucking suck shit to watch "being played" because 90% of the time is spent designating shit
2. adventure mode doesn't have enough features right now (but will next update) to warrant actual watching since it's so sparse

now, if you would setup a twitch stream of a dwarf fortress that was already well estabished, had a variety of very interesting layouts (not one more fucking BORING 3x3 staircase stack!) and basically spent 90% or more of the time simply in "Follow" mode for a dwarf, switching occasionally or possibly setup based on chat voting + stream narration, that'd be best.

Yeah. Blunt weaponry is the absolute worst of the worst. In order of best to worst it goes
Axes>Swords>Spears and Pikes>Biting>Picks and Daggers>Heavy Misc Objects like stone slabs or metal coffins>Whips>Punches and Kicks>Hammers>Maces>Not attacking at all>Ranged Weapons

Axes sever limbs and bisect enemies better than anything else. They're the quickest way to kill something.
Swords have a harder time severing limbs, but if you're a necromancer who likes to bleed things to death then that's a good thing.
Polearms are great for puncturing lungs, chipping bones and severing heads, hands and feet. They're not very lethal though, they just cripple shit.
Biting is absurdly powerful for some reason and is probably the best way to bleed something to death provided your teeth can pierce its flesh. Biting the head is a great way to knock something out without killing it too.
Daggers and picks are just weaker swords and polearms respectively.
If you want to go for blunt attacks, Misc Object is your only real option. A good heavy slab or coffin will make anything it hits explode into gore. Great for crushing skulls.
Whips are the best weapon for inflicting pain, but they will NEVER kill ANYTHING unless if passes out first, and even then they have a really hard time finishing the job unless they're made of like platinum or something.
Punches and Kicks are really useful when targeting the head, upper body and lower body because a punch to the head can stun or KO your target, a punch to the upper body can bruise the lung, slowing them down and making them pass out from exertion quicker, and a punch to the guts will weaken and slow them enough that a weapon attack to the head will almost guarantee a kill.
Hammers, maces and ranged weapons are garbage. Especially ranged weapons. If you want to attack from afar, drop your bow and manually throw those arrows. They will hit harder and won't leave you sitting still for ten ticks while shit murders you.
>>
>>152941890
Different guy, I take it whips have been nerfed now? Like they can't one-shot armored units anymore where a copper whip can tear through a steal helm like butter?
Or is this only for Adventurers where Fortress mode logic is slightly skewed in comparison?

Unrelated note, is it just me or do elves always seem to get BTFO during World gen? 5 worlds in a row and the elven race is dead.
>>
Is there any way in adventure mode to shout something like "I have come here to kill you, prepare to die!", making everyone hostile? Declaring that I now own the site doesn't do it, they just state their opinion on this political development as though it were something on the other side of the world, bragging about killing their friends doesn't do it, they just call me a murderer and spit at me.

Well I'm carving my way through these bitch ass vault dwellers and one of them had a fancy ass sword, so I guess I'm going sword again since even though it is fun bashing arms into bodies with my morningstar, hacking off arms and shit is more fun.
This shit is light enough so it's all going into my quiver of weapons
>>
>>152941890
>picks two levels below spears and pikes

You kinda need to elaborate. Picks have much better performance against armor. They don't sever quite as often, that's it. They're a great weapon that can punch holes in the heads of large monsters and sever the limbs of humans and such.

Also, whips most certainly can kill. They are decent at punching holes in heads, and are great for getting through helmets. I can definitely one shot size 9000000 weremammoths in the head with them.
>>
>>152942032
Nope, whips got gutted. They'll fuck up unarmored dwarves, and they're pretty scary against anything that feels pain, but they don't kill things, just cripple and maim.

Also, elves get fucked so often because everyone hates them for being disgusting cannibals, and they hate everyone for murdering trees and telling lies(Lying is PUNISH_EXILE for elves). They are the race most likely to declare war and to have war declared on them. Also, they have the shittiest military unless they get really really lucky with animal men populations, like that one anon who had an elven civ that was almost purely polar bear men.
>>
How do I generate a fun world for adventurer mode?
>>
>>152942032
>Unrelated note, is it just me or do elves always seem to get BTFO during World gen?

Yes. I mod elves, gobbos, and humans to be somewhat more harmonious -- they still fight, to be sure, but their ethics are blurrier. I have cannibalism be shunworthy for humans, and eco-nonsense is misguided to shunworthy by elven standards, while being self defense acceptable by goblins (they barely have need for plants and animals) and acceptable if sanctioned for humans.

In general, morally I have it so humans do almost anything but cannibalism if sanctioned (kinda like in real life), elves do almost anything if they have good reason, and goblins find almost anything acceptable.

Dorfs get BTFO instead, but that's okay. I only need 1 dorf civ, and its more fun to resurrect your own.
>>
>>152938901
Ok, what you need to do is seal up the entrance, even if you trap yourself with the demons. If you don't, they'll spread over the surface and end the world.
>>
>>152942241
Picks are the only weapon I haven't used myself in adv mode, so I wasn't entirely certain about them.

Whips have been consistently useless in my experience. Everything they can do, other weapons do better and without the recoil time whips have.
>>
>>152942336
>>152942032
Whips were nerfed (on multiattacks and are slower), but they can definitely shatter skulls. Scourges are especially nice, they cause more bleeding and don't have the slowness penalty.
>>
>>152942540
How about joint damage? Are whips good for that?
>>
>>152942338
Keep worldgen history at around 100 years. Less than 60 and your world is empty of anything interesting because it hasn't genned yet.
More than 150 and your world is empty of anything interesting because it was wiped out already.
>>
>>152942489
Whips are highly overrated (back when people jerked off about them furiously, I found an iron short sword fine for stabbing through iron helmeted skulls with every attack).

But they're great support weapons for NPCs.
>>
>>152941890
I don't see why people dislike ranged weapons. Sure you're in for a bad time alone but if you have some tanky companions then you make a great support character. Also I dunno if this is a mod or not but I can dual-wield a crossbow and a dagger, which I've been doing well with.
>>
>>152942612
Yes.

Whips feel very powerful against your legendary steel clad dorf squads, but they feel very underpowered when you use it, since it takes too long to finish stuff off.
>>
>>152942690
Ranged weapons lock you in place for like a year after you fire them. It's long enough for someone in melee range to attack you ten times. Significantly more if they're vampires.
>>
>>152942942
I believe the cooldown time depends on skill level, not that it matters.

I might be a bit too enthustiastic here, but I think it will be out towards the end of the year. After that, the myths will likely be finished within a year(towards the end of 2017), as well. According to the wiki NPCs and auto attackers are 100x more likely to attack with an edged attack than a blunt attack if their weapon gives them a choice. Most auto attacks with the blunt bits are probably the nice opportunity attacks, as I see the auto-blunt attacks with my sword pulping night troll legs and such.

Despite the fight starting with me biting off his right arm he not only managed to avoid running away, he kept dodging my attacks while whittling away at my hide with his copper boning knife, and kicking and biting me once I managed to get his other arm. I once broke a goblin's will to live. I found 2 goblins chilling on top of that building in the dark pits and wanted to use one for skill training. After smacking one's head off with a mace, I went to the other and naturally joint locked and broke all his shit. Then I just held him while he bit into my shield until he over exerted himself and fell unconscious. After removing all his teeth, I decided to start telling him the story about how I murdered his buddy over and over to speed up the process. We stayed on that roof for hours. Eventually I decided to make him even more inaccurate with his pushes, which always missed or were blocked, I would remove his eyes with my teeth. Then we spent several more hours rejoicing in the tales of my conquest of the corpse laying a few feet away. Eventually I got really thirsty and had to leave the site to melt my water supply. Since I couldn't walk down the fucking retarded ramps I just jumped off the short tower, taking no damage due to my armor. As I rounded the tower I saw my blind friend crawling through the trenches. I passed him by and went about fulfilling my thirst.

When I came back my friend was back on top of the tower and made a new buddy. A few bashes later and we were alone again.

I talked to this broken shell of a goblin and he seemed almost happy to hear my voice again, and even asked if I was going to tell another story. I grabbed him by the chest and launched into tales of the past.

He didn't lift a finger to stop me. He just sat there and let me hold him. My skills weren't quite where I wanted them to be, so I got angry and bashed him hard with my mace. It became lodged in the space where his arm once was, and he promptly pulled it out for me. He still would not fight me. I decided that our partnership has finally come to the end, and that the contract must be terminated. I kept bashing and bashing, but this little guy did nothing but pull my weapon out of him if it was stuck.

What's the most depressing thing you've seen in DF? For me, its a modded world I've generated, where 50 kingdoms of a few hundred citizens each fought each other under the shadow of three great dark towers, which held 10000 goblins, 10000 werebeasts, and 10000 nightcreatures, respectively. The towers would take whatever they wished from whoever they wished, and when two of them went to war, the dead numbered in the thousands. They would no doubt have cleansed the earth of all other life, were it not for the fact that the demons who led the towers had all been struck down by a great Lindworm, a 3-mile long serpent that stalks the world and brings ruin wherever it goes. It has more worshipers than some actual gods, from what I've seen. Basically the world is slowly being consumed by the unholy trinity and the great worm that even they cannot slay. The eradication of all life beyond them is only a matter of time.
>>

Bullshit. The only thing that's different about whips is that their attack prepare and recover is 4:4 instead of 3:3, meaning a full attack cycle takes 2 ticks longer than with other weapons. 2 ticks is negligible. Is it normal to be so ridiculously hard to kill anyone at all in adventure mode?

I always start as a demigod, but the fastest way I know of killing anyone is strangling them. I once stabbed the same dwarf in the neck in a hamlet for over twenty times, always cutting an artery but he didn't die at all

Also, why the fuck is it so absurdly difficult to find a real opponent? I see a lot of goblins and dogs and wild animals, but never a great beast or a titan or a necromancer. I go to towns, ask everyone where I can find a titan/great beast/necromancer/bonechilling horror and then they say there is one somewhere to the north. I go there and I don't find any fucking thing at all.

The closest I've ever got to finding a real opponent was once when I found a necromancer tower. But it was empty and I don't know why.

Am I stupid?

That's not really accurate. An unskilled fighter with an axe is probably more likely to disable an enemy with a successful strike than an unskilled fighter with a hammer, but not by much. Especially not after joint damage. The skills increase at the same speed. And creatures without godly strength do just fine with warhammers. In fact, combat testing in arena mode has consistently had hammer users of average stats and skills defeat similarly situated users of every other native weapon. Starting your military with a squad of silver hammers has been practically a meme for years due to their clear superiority over other weapon choices.

Hammers were better before you could hack armor to pieces, but an adventurer can target limbs you can sever with an axe, you need more strength to get the same sort of fight ending strikes consistently with a hammer.
>>
>>152986916
Recent changes may have impacted hammers' efficacy, but it would more likely be the pain nerf than armor damage. As far as I can tell, blunt weapons are at least as effective at destroying armor as edged weapons are (if not more so), and their superior ability to do damage through armor is only enhanced by armor degradation.
More to the point, though, shattering a foot will ground an enemy as effectively as removing it. And, as another anon pointed out upthread, removing limbs also removes any pain those limbs could cause. Even after the pain nerf, the pain penalties of crushed body parts and chipped bones are a significant aspect of blunt weapons' effectiveness, and they excel at those kinds of injuries compared to edged weapons. Moreover, they inflict injuries through armor much more reliably, which is a major benefit against armored enemies or those with especially hard tissue layers.

Every human/elf/dwarf/goblin has a bag of ~100 coins.
Every coin thrown increases your skills and attributes related to throwing.
A few hundred coins thrown later and you start chipping bones and breaking spines with them.

I use them to catch everyone faster than me, 1-3 copper coins and they are passed out from pain.
>>
>>152993478
Some heads. An unarmored head, normal humanoid size, both iron weapons? Sure. Put it in a steel helm, you'll cave in the skull with a hammer or mace before you get through the helm with a sword or axe. Against very large creatures it's a bit of a toss up, but you stand pretty good odds of fracturing the skull and imploding its brain with blunt attacks before getting its head off with edged attacks.

You could mod in a needle-like sword with a low as fuck contact area, and that would be possible

On a related note, can I make single finger atacks that would give different syndromes each one?
>>
>>152995618
It works, but it isn't usually more effective than blunt attacks. However if you're character isn't very strong it may be the most effective strategy. Though I've been debating his position, the point anon made above about blunt weapons' sensitivity to the user's strength is certainly relevant in this case. Really, the thicker the skull, the more important it is. In any case, stabbing will almost always be more effective than slashing when you're dealing with very large creatures. Spears, pikes, picks, and even morningstars are all better options than a sword if you're looking to poke holes in a giant beast's brain, though.

It's been a few years, I have more than 100 dwarves and my created wealth is at about 300 000, about to increase fast since I just found a lot of gold.

I've breached all the three cavern layers, but all I've found was a few crundles, troglodytes and a single troll, they were no match for my 3 3 full military squads in bronze armor.

You'd need to find a way to define multiple venoms on the same creature, and then somehow make each finger have a venomous attack that only applies one specific venom.

It depends on how close you are to necro or goblin sites and how populated they are. I'd recommend always checking nearby sites before deciding on an area to embark and then picking up a strong goblin fortress to guarantee big sieges.

>>152997553
Shallow and deep metals, no aquifers.

Depends on how you want to play. More time means more sites, more trades and less beasts. Potentially less goblins too.
I usually play at the start of the world.

>>152997553
Any biome with trees should be fine. I prefer grasslands or savannas over forests because heavily forested sites have shitloads of trees and they get annoying.
Any temperature should be fine as long as it's not scorching or freezing.
Avoid evil biomes, but don't worry about savagery or goodness. The most dangerous thing you're likely to see in a savage biome is kea men. The wiki hypes up all these dangerous animals like giant lions or giant elephants, but realistically these animals may as well not exist for how obscenely rare they are. I think the scariest thing that I've ever seen from a savage biome was a giant echidna that was killed by a necromancer siege and then became an immortal zombie. The only real effects a savage biome has is the presence of whip vine and the threat of rhino lizards eating all your food if you don't bring cats.
Sedimentary stone is by far the best, so unless you plan on embarking on a volcano for early magma access, avoid volcanic areas like the plague because they have shitall for ores.

As for history, anything under 60 years is too short and anything over 150 years is way too long. If you want a world where there are multiple civs that are balanced in power instead of a single goblin civ making up 75% of the world population, then 100 years exact is your best bet.

>>152997525
>The year is 253

Humans are probably the dominant race in your world and they most likely wiped out all your goblins. Kobolds are guaranteed to be extinct after 250 years of being at war with everyone, and if you had embarked close enough to a tower to be sieged by one you would have already been hit by an army of 50+ zombies.
The only attacks you're likely to see are forgotten beasts and possibly titans if you're super lucky.
>>
>>152999040

>>
>>152999040
You can use DFHack's prospect command to check the stone layers before embark, or you can embark in a flat area near water with deep soil far away from volcanos and then hope you don't get fucked with metamorphic rock.
Nothing is more boring than metamorphic rock layers. At least igneous layers can have gold. With metamorphic you get silver, lead and zinc and you get to be happy about it.
>>
>>152997682
That's not hard to do at all. You can define as many extracts per creature as you like and attach as many syndromes to each as you like. Dwarves themselves already have four extracts: blood, sweat, tears and saliva.

Although making ten different extracts would just be... tedious.

You can even have MORE syndrome-inducing attacks than your number of fingers, if you like. For instance, you could create 8 extracts, attach syndromes to them, and then create 8 attacks, all of which are used from the left little finger, and each of which injects with a different extract. And then you could make more 8 attacks for each finger.

Then in adv mode in your ability list you'll see all 80 separate attacks listed.

>Is this game's creature creation system deeper and more precise than, say, spore?

Hahaha! Yes. Ohhhh, yes.

For instance, in DF you can model nearly pretty much anything. Like... I dunno, something stupid, like a chicken that sweats magical goo which causes any other creatures that touch it to explode into a cloud of superheated mercury gas and leave behind diamonds.

You would first create a creature made of solid mercury which has a fixed temperature of higher than the evaporation point of mercury. Then you make this creature drop a diamond upon death with itemcorpse.

Then you define a liquid extract material, and attach an on-contact syndrome to it that transforms the afflicted target into our superheated mercury creature. In this syndrome you define chickens as being immune to it, of course.

Then you make a new creature modelled after a chicken, give it the ability to sweat, and make it sweat our syndrome-attached goo.

Or more practically, a caste of dwarf called a Houndmaster, which can cast a limited duration buff on canines near it.

You first create a custom class called canine, and attach it to all canines in the game. dogs, dingos, wolves, giant wolves, etc. Then you make a custom caste of dwarf that has an interact that afflicts the target with a syndrome which grants the NOFEAR tag and a strength increase for X number of game ticks.

It's just a matter of learning tags, which are basically a really shitty programming language, and how to game them to do what you want.

Erm, sorry, left out the most important step of our Houndmaster. This interaction, of course, would only target creatures belonging to the canine class.

>cats' retractile nails
They're not modelled in vanilla, and the tech doesn't QUITE exist to model it yet, due to the fact that the 'retracts into body part' token also automatically makes the creature immobile and unable to attack when active.

>retract in shell of turtles
Basically it defines a body part for the creature to retract into, in this case the shell, and then flags all other body parts as untargetable in combat.

So, using the mentioned example on creature creating, in Spore you could define different leg models, size and distance to the joint(knee), they would have a precise size, height and form, that, If Ea havden't fucked up the game, would have affected atack and speed movements(something DF aims to simulate)
But as I read about the game mechanics, it seems that a creature model is nothing but a cube with lesser cubes atached to him, completely abstracting the creature's form , is that true?

Yup.

I made tougher material dragons first, right, and then I decided to use toady's new produces_local_heroes and such tags to add an adventurer only race, literally just put the dwarf shape and body plan with the dragon materials and whatnot right?

Well I also tossed in the fireproof/magmaproof stuff using the "select all materials and set no heat damage/boiling point/etc" bits at the end of the dragon raws right?

Then I made one and grabbed gear in a hamlet and then shortly after walking outside I set the grass on fire and my helmet melted off of me.

My tears were literally melting steel helmets off my face, I fixed that, but left the ultrahot spit so I can set people on fire without starting fights.

[SPECIALATTACK_INTERACTION] is what you want.

Yes, in the abstract, a creature in DF is just a cube with lesser cubes attached to it to simulate body parts. The head for instance is a cube with a cube for the nose, two cubes for the ears, etc. It's like Picasso paintings.

BUT! The game DOES take into account like limb size and weight when calculating attacks. In the BP file when defining body presets, you can also set a limb or part to be a relative % size of the total mass of the creature, so if you have two humanoid creatures of 60,000 size, and one has legs that are set to 30% of the total mass, and the other has legs that are set to 60% of the total mass, the one with the 60% legs will kick harder.

>>153006095
I wouldn't describe DF's very complicated system of nerves, bones, muscles, fat, and other tissues as "completely abstract" but yes the difference between height, width, and length is all abstracted into a collective size.

Oh well, not as dissapointing as I expected

Is it gonna change eventually? are more creature creation rehauls programmed?
>>
>>153006095
Oh, yeah there isn't data pertaining to the shapes of body parts. I'm not sure how improper I'd call that though. Does the shape really matter that much if you know what it is, how it moves, what it's attached to and what it's composed of? It's a vastly better model than Spore for every purpose except aesthetic, and since DF doesn't have 3D graphics anyway, that shit matters only to Japa.

haven't played in awhile, got the latest LNP.

Started a game, tried to open the rapist. Get an error saying DT doesn't know how to talk to this version.

What's up with that? I didn't copy over an old install or anything; fresh install straight from the LNP thread. Does DT not work anymore?
>>
>>153007741
It may. I have seen no arguments against it nor plans to change it.
>>
>>153007741
I don't think so. In order for that to change, there would need to be some kind of purpose for it. Even a very small purpose would do (this is, after all, the game where eyelids are modeled and correctly clean eyeballs) but I don't see any purpose at all. Even if you want to make 3D graphics, it would make more sense to do that as part of the 3D rendering engine than the game itself.

>>153007741
I'm not sure if it will change eventually... I... uh... I don't actually read the dev goal posts.

But you could take a look at them yourself to see if such a thing is planned. I don't know where the posts are myself, but I'm sure some other kind anon could drop you a link...? Maybe?
>>
>>153007874
You could always play without the rapist.
>>
>>153007874
Latest starter pack's rapist works for me. Maybe your download got corrupted somehow?

Try redownloading and see if that fixes it?
>>
>>153007874
What operating system?
I know the Linux kernel is really strict on programs accessing another program's memory, so if you're on there, you may have to disable the feature for The Rapist
>>
Would anyone happen to have the LNP for 0.42.02?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could share it with me, i can't seem to find it online.

Yeah, you guys are right
I can process the idea better if I imagine that every creature is 'pixelated'

More stuff
Does the game acknowledges where do limbs connect with the torso?
In a big enough body part, does the place where you place a heart inside it affect the chances of it being pierced?
>>

>Does the game acknowledges where do limbs connect with the torso?
What do you mean by "where"? It's basically a matter of "the arm bone's connected to the shoulder bone" since there hasn't been need for more detail there (and won't until Toady gets to martial arts).
>In a big enough body part, does the place where you place a heart inside it affect the chances of it being pierced?
The depth does. Other than that, it's just in "upper body" but if you mean like, having a creature that looks humanoid but the heart is on the right so people who don't know what it is will miss the heart, there's nothing like that now.

You sure have alot of questions. Okay, let's get more technical.

>Does the game acknowledges where do limbs connect with the torso?

Yes. This information is defined in body_default.txt and body_rcp.txt. This information is used in-game for things like joint-locking and manipulating during wrestling and also attack damage affecting adjacent body parts to the one that is hit.

>In a big enough body part, does the place where you place a heart inside it affect the chances of it being pierced?

No. You can define if a body part is connected to another part externally and where it is connected via joints, but the location of an internal body part within another body part cannot currently be defined as such. Basically what the game does right now is look at the overall size of the containing body part, and then the size of the contained body part, and roll a weighted dice to see if the contained body part is hit. Practically: if you have a torso of relsize 90, and a heart of relsize 10, a spear stab (assuming it penetrates, of course) to the torso will have roughly a 10/(90+10) or 10% chance to strike the heart.

Yo where are you getting those population pie charts from? Is it a utility in LV I'm missing?
